26:111 Ash-Shu'araa (The Poets)

قال له قومه: كيف نصدِّقك ونتبعك، والذين اتبعوك أراذل الناس وأسافلهم؟

فقالوا ردا لدعوته, ومعارضة له بما ليس يصلح للمعارضة: أَنُؤْمِنُ لَكَ وَاتَّبَعَكَ الأَرْذَلُونَ أي: كيف نتبعك ونحن لا نرى أتباعك إلا أسافل الناس, وأراذلهم, وسقطهم. بهذا يعرف تكبرهم عن الحق, وجهلهم بالحقائق, فإنهم لو كان قصدهم الحق, لقالوا - إن كان عندهم إشكال وشك في دعوته - بيّن لنا صحة ما جئت به بالطرق الموصلة إلى ذلك، ولو تأملوا حق التأمل, لعلموا أن أتباعه, هم الأعلون, خيار الخلق, أهل العقول الرزينة, والأخلاق الفاضلة, وأن الأرذل, من سلب خاصية عقله, فاستحسن عبادة الأحجار, ورضي أن يسجد لها, ويدعوها, وأبى الانقياد لدعوة الرسل الكمل. وبمجرد ما يتكلم أحد الخصمين في الكلام الباطل, يعرف فساد ما عنده بقطع النظر عن صحة دعوى خصمه، فقوم نوح, لما سمعنا عنهم, أنهم قالوا في ردهم دعوة نوح: أَنُؤْمِنُ لَكَ وَاتَّبَعَكَ الأَرْذَلُونَ فبنوا على هذا الأصل, الذي كل أحد يعرف فساده, رد دعوته - عرفنا أنهم ضالون مخطئون, ولو لم نشاهد من آيات نوح ودعوته العظيمة, ما يفيد الجزم واليقين, بصدقه وصحة ما جاء به.

يقولون لا نؤمن لك ولا نتبعك ونتأسى في ذلك بهؤلاء الأرذلين الذين اتبعوك وصدقوك وهم أراذلنا ولهذا "قالوا أنؤمن لك واتبعك الأرذلون قال وما علمي بما كانوا يعملون" أي وأي شيء يلزمني من اتباع هؤلاء لي ولو كانوا على أي شيء كانوا عليه لا يلزمني التنقيب عنهم والبحث والفحص إنما علي أن أقبل منهم تصديقهم إياي وأكل سرائرهم إلى الله عز وجل.

They said ‘Shall we believe in you in your words when it is the lowliest people who follow you?’ wa’ttaba‘aka a variant reading has wa-atbā‘uka ‘when your followers’ plural of tābi‘ ‘follower’ as a subject the riffraff such as the weavers and the shoemakers.

Nobility of a person depends on deeds and moral qualities and not on family or status

قَالُوا أَنُؤْمِنُ لَكَ وَاتَّبَعَكَ الْأَرْ‌ذَلُونَ ﴿111﴾ قَالَ وَمَا عِلْمِي بِمَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ ﴿112﴾

They said, "Shall we believe in you while you are followed by the lowest people?" [ 111] He said, "I do not know about what they do. (26:111-112)

It is related in this verse that the disbelievers rejected the invitation of Sayyidna Nuh (علیہ السلام) to accept the faith on the plea that his followers were worthless poor people. So, how could they, the elite and noble, mix up with them? On this Nuh (علیہ السلام) replied that he did not know about their acts, thereby hinting that their understanding of nobility on the basis of family background, wealth, or status was wrong, and that the nobility or meanness and honour or disgrace is dependent on one's deeds and morals. Hence, it was their ignorance to put the label of sordidness on his followers, because they did not know about their deeds and disposition. Unless one knows fully well about the morals and deeds of others, it is not right to pass any judgment about them. (Qurtubi).
