22:15 Al-Hajj (The Pilgrimage)

من كان يعتقد أن الله تعالى لن يؤيد رسوله محمدًا بالنصر في الدنيا بإظهار دينه، وفي الآخرة بإعلاء درجته، وعذابِ مَن كذَّبه، فلْيَمدُدْ حبلا إلى سقف بيته وليخنق به نفسه، ثم ليقطع ذلك الحبل، ثم لينظر: هل يُذْهِبنَّ ذلك ما يجد في نفسه من الغيظ؟ فإن الله تعالى ناصرٌ نبيه محمدًا صلى الله عليه وسلم لا محالة.

أي: من كان يظن أن الله لا ينصر رسوله، وأن دينه سيضمحل، فإن النصر من الله ينزل من السماء { فَلْيَمْدُدْ } ذلك الظان { بِسَبَبٍ } أي: حبل { إِلَى السَّمَاءِ } وليرقى إليها { ثُمَّ لِيَقْطَعْ } النصر النازل عليه من السماء { فَلْيَنْظُرْ هَلْ يُذْهِبَنَّ كَيْدُهُ } أي: ما يكيد به الرسول، ويعمله من محاربته، والحرص على إبطال دينه، ما يغيظه من ظهور دينه، وهذا استفهام بمعنى النفي [وأنه]، لا يقدر على شفاء غيظه بما يعمله من الأسباب. ومعنى هذه الآية الكريمة: يا أيها المعادي للرسول محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم، الساعي في إطفاء دينه، الذي يظن بجهله، أن سعيه سيفيده شيئا، اعلم أنك مهما فعلت من الأسباب، وسعيت في كيد الرسول، فإن ذلك لا يذهب غيظك، ولا يشفي كمدك، فليس لك قدرة في ذلك، ولكن سنشير عليك برأي، تتمكن به من شفاء غيظك، ومن قطع النصر عن الرسول -إن كان ممكنا- ائت الأمر مع بابه، وارتق إليه بأسبابه، اعمد إلى حبل من ليف أو غيره، ثم علقه في السماء، ثم اصعد به حتى تصل إلى الأبواب التي ينزل منها النصر، فسدها وأغلقها واقطعها، فبهذه الحال تشفي غيظك، فهذا هو الرأي: والمكيدة، وأما ما سوى هذه الحال فلا يخطر ببالك أنك تشفي بها غيظك، ولو ساعدك من ساعدك من الخلق. وهذه الآية الكريمة، فيها من الوعد والبشارة بنصر الله لدينه ولرسوله وعباده المؤمنين ما لا يخفى، ومن تأييس الكافرين، الذين يريدون أن يطفئوا نور الله بأفواههم، والله متم نوره، ولو كره الكافرون، أي: وسعوا مهما أمكنهم.

قال ابن عباس من كان يظن أن لن ينصرَ اللهُ محمدًا "صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم" في الدنيا والآخرة فليمدد بسبب أي بحبل " إلى السماء " أي سماء بيته " ثم ليقطع " يقول ثم ليختنق به وكذا قال مجاهد وعكرمة وعطاء وأبو الجوزاء وقتادة وغيرهم وقال عبدالرحمن بن زيد بن أسلم " فليمدد بسبب إلى السماء " أي ليتوصل إلى بلوغ السماء فإن النصر إنما يأتي محمدا من السماء " ثم ليقطع " ذلك عنه إن قدر على ذلك وقول ابن عباس وأصحابه أولى وأظهر في المعنى وأبلغ في التهكم فإن المعنى من كان يظن أن الله ليس بناصرٍ محمدا وكتابه ودينه فليذهب فليقتل نفسه إن كان ذلك غائظه فإن الله ناصره لا محاله قال الله تعالى:" إنا لننصر رسلنا والذين آمنوا في الحياة الدنيا ويوم يقوم الأشهاد " الآية ولهذا قال: " فلينظر هل يذهبن كيده ما يغيظ " قال السدي يعني من شأن محمد وقال عطاء الخراساني فلينظر هل يشفي ذلك ما يجد في صدره من الغيظ.

Whoever supposes that God will not help him namely Muhammad (s) His Prophet in this world and the Hereafter let him extend a rope to the ceiling to the roof of his house fixing it there and tying it to his neck and let him hang himself that is let him choke to death because of it by severing his soul from any existence on the earth as reported in the various Sahīh compilations. Then let him see whether his strategy against the Prophet being helped dispels that which enrages him about it. In other words let him choke to death with rage because of it for it is inevitable.

Commentary

مَن كَانَ يَظُنُّ (If someone thinks - 22:15). It means that the enemies of Islam who put hurdles in its path and desired that Allah should abandon the Holy Prophet ﷺ and his religion must clearly understand that this can happen only when, God forbid, he is deprived of the office of the prophethood and ceases to receive wahy (revelations) from Allah Ta’ ala. It is well understood that when Allah Ta’ ala bestows the prophethood on someone and also favours him with wahy (revelations), He also promises him full support in this world and in the Hereafter. Thus the only way to stop the advancement of a prophet and his mission, if someone has the power to stop it, is that he should dispossess the Holy Prophet ﷺ of his mission or that the sequence of Divine revelation should be severed. Anyone wanting to do all this will have to go up to the sky and cut off the chain of revelation, and since such a thing is not possible, no amount of fire and fury can do any harm to Islam. This interpretation is related in al-Durr al-Manthur from Ibn Zaid and, in my opinion, it is the most appropriate one.

Qurtubi also thinks that this is the best interpretation of this verse. There are some others who are of the view that the word سَمَاء (sky) occurring in this verse means the ceiling of one's house and the verse means that a person who entertains hostile feelings towards Islam and the Holy Prophet ﷺ must realize that he can do them no harm. Hence the best thing for him to do is to hang himself from the ceiling out of sheer mortification. (Mazhari and others).
