واذكروا نعمتنا عليكم -وأنتم عطاش في التِّيْه- حين دعانا موسى -بضراعة- أن نسقي قومه، فقلنا: اضرب بعصاك الحجر، فضرب، فانفجرت منه اثنتا عشرة عينًا، بعدد القبائل، مع إعلام كل قبيلة بالعين الخاصة بها حتى لا يتنازعوا. وقلنا لهم: كلوا واشربوا من رزق الله، ولا تسعوا في الأرض مفسدين.

استسقى, أي: طلب لهم ماء يشربون منه. { فَقُلْنَا اضْرِبْ بِعَصَاكَ الْحَجَرَ } إما حجر مخصوص معلوم عنده, وإما اسم جنس، { فَانْفَجَرَتْ مِنْهُ اثْنَتَا عَشْرَةَ عَيْنًا } وقبائل بني إسرائيل اثنتا عشرة قبيلة، { قَدْ عَلِمَ كُلُّ أُنَاسٍ } منهم { مَشْرَبَهُمْ } أي: محلهم الذي يشربون عليه من هذه الأعين, فلا يزاحم بعضهم بعضا, بل يشربونه متهنئين لا متكدرين, ولهذا قال: { كُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا مِنْ رِزْقِ اللَّهِ } أي: الذي آتاكم من غير سعي ولا تعب، { وَلَا تَعْثَوْا فِي الْأَرْضِ } أي: تخربوا على وجه الإفساد.

يقول تعالى واذكروا نعمتي عليكم في إجابتي لنبيكم موسى عليه السلام حين استسقاني لكم وتيسيري لكم الماء وإخراجه لكم من حجر يحمل معكم وتفجيري الماء لكم منه من ثنتي عشرة عينا كل سبط من أسباطكم عين قد عرفوها فكلو من المن والسلوى واشربوا من هذا الماء الذي أنبعته لكم بلا سعي منكم ولا كد واعبدوا الذي سخر لكم ذلك "ولا تعثوا في الأرض مفسدين" ولا تقابلوا النعم بالعصيان فتسلبوها. وقد بسطه المفسرون في كلامهم كما قال: ابن عباس رضي الله عنه وجعل بين ظهرانيهم حجر مربع وأمر موسى عليه السلام فضربه بعصاه فانفجرت منه اثنتا عشرة عينا في كل ناحية منه ثلاث عيون وأعلم كل سبط عينهم يشربون منها لا يرتحلون من منقلة إلا وجدوا ذلك معهم بالمكان الذي كان منهم بالمنزل الأول وهذا قطعة من الحديث الذي رواه النسائي وابن جرير وابن أبي حاتم وهو حديث الفتون الطويل. وقال: عطية العوفي وجعل لهم حجرا مثل رأس الثور يحمل على ثور فإذا نزلوا منزلا وضعوه فضربه موسى عليه السلام بعصاه فانفجرت منه اثنتا عشرة عينا فإذا ساروا حملوه على ثور فاستمسك الماء وقال: عثمان ابن عطاء الخراساني عن أبيه كان لبني إسرائيل حجر فكان يضعه هارون ويضربه موسى بالعصا وقال قتادة كان حجرا طوريا من الطور يحملونه معهم حتى إذا نزلوا ضربه موسى بعصاه وقال: الزمخشري وقيل كان من رخام وكان ذراعا في ذراع وقيل مثل رأس الإنسان وقيل كان من الجنة طوله عشرة أذرع على طول موسى وله شعبتان يتقدان في الظلمة وكان يحمل على حمار قال وقيل أهبطه آدم من الجنة فتوارثوه حتى وقع إلى شعيب فدفعه إليه مع العصا وقيل هو الحجر الذي وضع عليه ثوبه حين اغتسل فقال: له جبريل ارفع هذا الحجر فإن فيه قدرة ولك فيه معجزة فحمله في مخلاته قال الزمخشري محتمل أن تكون اللام للجنس لا للعهد أي اضرب الشيء الذي يقال له الحجر وعن الحسن لم يأمره أن يضرب حجرا بعينه قال وهذا أظهر في المعجزة وأبين في القدرة فكان يضرب الحجر بعصاه فينفجر ثم يضربه فييبس فقالوا إن فقد موسى هذا الحجر عطشنا فأوحى الله إليه أن يكلم الحجارة فتنفجر ولا يمسها بالعصا لعلهم يقرون والله أعلم وقال يحيى بن النضر: قلت لجويبر كيف علم كل أناس مشربهم؟ قال: كان موسى يضع الحجر ويقوم من كل سبط رجل ويضرب موسى الحجر فينفجر منه اثنتا عشرة عينا فينضح من كل عين على رجل فيدعو ذلك الرجل سبطه إلى تلك العين وقال الضحاك: قال ابن عباس لما كان بنو إسرائيل في التيه شق لهم من الحجر أنهارا وقال الثوري عن أبي سعيد عن عكرمة عن ابن عباس: قال ذلك في التيه ضرب لهم موسى الحجر فصار منه اثنتي عشرة عينا من ماء لكل سبط منهم عين يشربون منها وقال مجاهد نحو قول ابن عباس وهذه القصة شبيهة بالقصة التي في سورة الأعراف ولكن تلك مكية; فلذلك كان الإخبار عنهم بضمير الغائب لأن الله تعالى يقص على رسوله - صلى الله عليه وسلم ما فعل بهم. وأما في هذه السورة وهي البقرة فهي مدنية فلهذا كان الخطاب فيها متوجها إليهم وأخبر هناك بقوله "فانبجست منه اثنتا عشرة عينا" وهو أول الانفجار وأخبر هاهنا بما آل إليه الحال آخرا وهو الانفجار فناسب ذكر الانفجار هاهنا وذاك هناك والله أعلم. وبين السياقين تباين من عشرة أوجه لفظية ومعنوية قد سأل عنها الزمخشري في تفسيره وأجاب عنها بما عنده والأمر في ذكل قريب والله أعلم.

And mention when Moses sought water for his people for they suffered thirst in the wilderness We said ‘Strike with your staff the rock the one that ran off with his robe a light cube-like rock about the size of a man’s head made of marble and he struck it and there exploded there burst and gushed forth from it twelve fountains equal to the number of tribes each people each tribe among them came to know their drinking-place which they did not share with any of the others. And We said to them ‘Eat and drink of that which God has provided and do not be degenerate in the earth seeking corruption’ mufsidīn is a circumstantial qualifier emphasising its operator the subject of the verb lā ta‘thaw ‘do not be degenerate’ derived from ‘athiya meaning afsada ‘to corrupt’.

This incident too belongs to the story of the wanderings of the Israelites in the wilderness. Parched with thirst, they requested Sayyidna Musa (رح) ، 1t to pray to Allah for water. Allah commanded him to strike a certain rock with his staff. As he did so, twelve streams gushed forth out of the rock, one for each of the twelve tribes. Sayyidna Ya` qub (علیہ السلام) (Jacob) had twelve sons, and each had a large family of his own. So, the families were considered as tribes, each with its own administrative organisation and its own head. Hence, the number twelve ]. What they have been asked to eat is the Mann مَن and the Salwa سلوا (manna and quails), and the water is, of course, the one which had come out of the rock.

The Israelites have, in this verse, been asked not to spread disorder which in this context signifies disobedience to Allah and transgression of His Commandments.

The great Commentator al-Qadi al-Baydawi (رح) points out that it is a great error22 to deny miracles. When Allah has given a certain stone the unusual property of drawing iron to itself, it cannot be, logically and rationally speaking, impossible that He should also give another stone the property of absorbing water from the earth and of releasing it again. Even this explanation is meant for those who take a superficial view of things. Otherwise, it is in no way impossible that Allah should produce water within a stone itself. Those who call it impossible do not actually understand the technical meaning of the term "impossible."

22. Even a great error in logic.

An answer to a doubt about the Israelites

It has been asked whether it is necessary, in times of drought, to offer formal prayers in order to beseech Allah for rains. The present verse tells us that Sayyidna Musa (علیہ السلام) just prayed for water, and Allah made a miraculous provision. It shows that the essential thing in beseeching Allah for rains is just a prayer. In the Shari'ah of Sayyidna Musa (علیہ السلام) a mere prayer was considered to be sufficient for the purpose. According to Imam Abu Hanifah (رح) ، this principle holds good for the Islamic Shari` ah too. The Holy Prophet ﷺ has, in this respect, acted differently on different occasions. An authentic hadith reports that once he went outside the city to the open space where the congregational prayers were held on the day of the ` Id عید ، offered formal prayers, delivered a Khutbah خطبہ (address), and then prayed to Allah for rains. According to another hadith reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim from the blessed Companion Anas ؓ ، once the Holy Prophet ﷺ prayed for rains while delivering the Khutbah on Friday, and Allah sent down rains.

No matter what form the prayer takes, all the scholars agree that it cannot be effective unless it is accompanied by a repentance for one's sins, a confession of one's powerlessness, a sincere expression of humility and an affirmation of servitude to Allah. So long as one persists in sin and transgression, one has no right to hope that the prayer would be answered. But if Allah may, in His mercy and benevolence, grant the prayer without this condition being fulfilled, it is His will, and He is All-Powerful.
