17:21 Al-Israa (The Night Journey)

تأمل -أيها الرسول- في كيفية تفضيل الله بعض الناس على بعض في الدنيا في الرزق والعمل، ولَلآخرة أكبرُ درجات للمؤمنين وأكبر تفضيلا.

{ انْظُرْ كَيْفَ فَضَّلْنَا بَعْضَهُمْ عَلَى بَعْضٍ } في الدنيا بسعة الأرزاق وقلتها، واليسر والعسر والعلم والجهل والعقل والسفه وغير ذلك من الأمور التي فضل الله العباد بعضهم على بعض بها. { وَلَلْآخِرَةُ أَكْبَرُ دَرَجَاتٍ وَأَكْبَرُ تَفْضِيلًا } فلا نسبة لنعيم الدنيا ولذاتها إلى الآخرة بوجه من الوجوه. فكم بين من هو في الغرف العاليات واللذات المتنوعات والسرور والخيرات والأفراح ممن هو يتقلب في الجحيم ويعذب بالعذاب الأليم، وقد حل عليه سخط الرب الرحيم وكل من الدارين بين أهلها من التفاوت ما لا يمكن أحدا عده.

ثم قال تعالى "انظر كيف فضلنا بعضهم على بعض" أي في الدنيا فمنهم الغني والفقير وبين ذلك والحسن والقبيح وبين ذلك ومن يموت صغيرا ومن يعمر حتى يبقى شيخا كبيرا وبين ذلك "وللآخرة أكبر درجات وأكبر تفضيلا" أي ولتفاوتهم في الدار الآخرة أكبر من الدنيا فإن منهم من يكون في الدركات في جهنم وسلاسلها وأغلالها ومنهم من يكون في الدرجات العلى ونعيمها وسرورها ثم أهل الدركات يتفاوتون فيما هم فيه كما أن أهل الدرجات يتفاوتون فإن الجنة مائة درجة ما بين كل درجتين كما بين السماء والأرض. وفي الصحيحين "إن أهل الدرجات العلى ليرون أن عليين كما ترون الكوكب الغابر في أفق السماء" ولهذا قال تعالى "وللآخرة أكبر درجات وأكبر تفضيلا" وفي الطبراني من رواية زاذان عن سلمان مرفوعا "ما من عبد يريد أن يرتفع في الدنيا درجة فارتفع إلا وضعه الله في الآخرة أكبر منها" ثم قرأ "وللآخرة أكبر درجات وأكبر تفضيلا".

See how We have given preference to some of them over others in provision and renown. And truly the Hereafter is greater grander in degrees and greater in preferment to this world and so one ought to devote one’s attention to it the Hereafter to the exclusion of the other.

A self-opinionated deed and an act of religious innovation, no matter how appealing, is not acceptable

In this verse (19), by adding the word: سَعْيَهَا (as due), it has been made explicit that every deed and every effort is not necessarily beneficial or acceptable with Allah. Instead, the only deed or effort credible is that which is appropriate to the essential objective (of the Hereafter). And whether or not it is appropriate can only be found out from the statement of Allah Ta’ ala and His Messenger ﷺ . Therefore, even well meaning efforts made by insisting on bland personal opinion and self-invented ways - which includes common customs of Bid'ah (innovations in established religion) - no matter how good and beneficial they may appear at their face, but are not appropriate to the effort made for the Hereafter. Consequently, they are neither acceptable with Allah nor are they of any use in the Hereafter.

Explaining the word: سَعْيَهَا (as due), Tafsir Ruh al-Ma’ ani says that the 'effort' should be in accordance with 'sunnah.' Along with it, it adds that this effort or deed should also have uprightness and firmness. In other words, this deed should be beneficial in accordance with the Sunnah as well as it should be upright and constant. Doing it haphazardly or doing it in a cycle of doing and not doing is not good. It never yields the maximum benefit.
