قال نوح عليه السلام لقومه: يا قوم لا أسألكم على دعوتكم لتوحيد الله وإخلاص العبادة له مالاً تؤدونه إليَّ بعد إيمانكم، ولكن ثواب نصحي لكم على الله وحده، وليس من شأني أن أطرد المؤمنين، فإنهم ملاقو ربهم يوم القيامة، ولكني أراكم قومًا تجهلون؛ إذ تأمرونني بطرد أولياء الله وإبعادهم عني.

{ وَيَا قَوْمِ لَا أَسْأَلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ } أي: على دعوتي إياكم { مَا لَا } فستستثقلون المغرم. { إِنْ أَجْرِيَ إِلَّا عَلَى اللَّهِ } وكأنهم طلبوا منه طرد المؤمنين الضعفاء، فقال لهم: { وَمَا أَنَا بِطَارِدِ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا } أي: ما ينبغي لي، ولا يليق بي ذلك، بل أتلقاهم بالرحب والإكرام، والإعزاز والإعظام { إِنَّهُمْ مُلَاقُو رَبِّهِمْ } فمثيبهم على إيمانهم وتقواهم بجنات النعيم. { وَلَكِنِّي أَرَاكُمْ قَوْمًا تَجْهَلُونَ } حيث تأمرونني، بطرد أولياء الله, وإبعادهم عني. وحيث رددتم الحق، لأنهم أتباعه، وحيث استدللتم على بطلان الحق بقولكم إني بشر مثلكم وإنه ليس لنا عليكم من فضل.

يقول لقومه لا أسألكم على نصحي لكم ما لا أجرة آخذها منكم إنما أبتغي الأجر من الله عز وجل "وما أنا بطارد الذين آمنوا" كأنهم طلبوا منه أن يطرد المؤمنين عنه احتشاما ونفاسة منهم أن يجلسوا معهم.

And O my people I do not ask of you any wealth which you should give me for this for conveying the Message. My wage my reward falls only upon God and I will not drive away those who believe as you have commanded me; they shall surely meet their Lord at the Resurrection and He will requite them and exact vengeance for them from those who wronged them and drove them away. But I see you are a people who are ignorant of the consequence of your affair.

Then, they were told: ` As for the condition you impose that I should remove the poor from my company in order that you could believe, then let it be very clear that I cannot do that. They may be poor but they are close to the Highest of the high, the greatest honor one can have. Turning such people out is not a right thing to do.'

And: مُّلَاقُو رَ‌بِّهِمْ (They are surely to meet their Lord) could also mean: If, supposedly, I were to turn them out, when they go to their Lord on the day of Qiyamah and complain, what would I have to say? The subject continues in the fourth verse (30): If I were to turn them out, who would save me from Divine punishment? At the end, it was said: All this is nothing but your ignorance and heedlessness. To you being a man is counter to being a prophet, or you go to the other extreme and demand that poor people should be driven away from his company.
