Laylat al-Qadr — the Night of Decree — is described in Surah al-Qadr (Surah 97). Allah Almighty says that a single act of worship on this night is better than a thousand months of worship outside it.

When to seek it

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to seek it in the last ten nights of Ramadan, with particular emphasis on the odd nights — the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, and 29th. Many scholars hold that the most likely night is the 27th, while others note that the exact night may shift each year, which is why all the last ten nights are recommended.

Signs in the morning

The Prophet (peace be upon him) described the morning after Laylat al-Qadr as calm, with a sun that rises pale and without intense rays. These are not certain markers, only descriptions.

What is recommended

Standing in prayer, reciting Quran, making sincere duʼa, and giving in charity. The well-known duʼa for this night taught by the Prophet (peace be upon him) to ʻAʼisha is: "Allahumma innaka ʻafuwwun tuhibbu al-ʻafwa faʻfu ʻanni" — "O Allah, You are Most Forgiving and love forgiveness, so forgive me."
