28:79 Al-Qasas (The Stories)

{ فَخَرَجَ } ذات يوم { فِي زِينَتِهِ } أي: بحالة أرفع ما يكون من أحوال دنياه، قد كان له من الأموال ما كان، وقد استعد وتجمل بأعظم ما يمكنه، وتلك الزينة في العادة من مثله تكون هائلة، جمعت زينة الدنيا وزهرتها وبهجتها وغضارتها وفخرها، فرمقته في تلك الحالة العيون، وملأت بِزَّتُهُ القلوب، واختلبت زينته النفوس، فانقسم فيه الناظرون قسمين، كل تكلم بحسب ما عنده من الهمة والرغبة.فـ { قَالَ الَّذِينَ يُرِيدُونَ الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا } أي: الذين تعلقت إرادتهم فيها، وصارت منتهى رغبتهم، ليس لهم إرادة في سواها، { يَا لَيْتَ لَنَا مِثْلَ مَا أُوتِيَ قَارُونُ } من الدنيا ومتاعها وزهرتها { إِنَّهُ لَذُو حَظٍّ عَظِيمٍ } وصدقوا إنه لذو حظ عظيم، لو كان الأمر منتهيا إلى رغباتهم، وأنه ليس وراء الدنيا، دار أخرى، فإنه قد أعطي منها ما به غاية التنعم بنعيم الدنيا، واقتدر بذلك على جميع مطالبه، فصار هذا الحظ العظيم، بحسب همتهم، وإن همة جعلت هذا غاية مرادها ومنتهى مطلبها، لَمِنْ أدنى الهمم وأسفلها وأدناها، وليس لها أدنى صعود إلى المرادات العالية والمطالب الغالية.

يقول تعالى مخبرا عن قارون أنه خرج ذات يوم على قومه في زينة عظيمة وتجمل باهر من مراكب وملابس عليه وعلى خدمه وحشمه فلما رآه من يريد الحياة الدنيا ويميل إلى زخارفها وزينتها تمنوا أن لو كان لهم مثل الذي أعطي "قالوا يا ليت لنا مثل ما أوتي قارون إنه لذو حظ عظيم" أي ذو حظ وافر من الدنيا فلما سمع مقالتهم أهل العلم النافع.

How Qarun went forth in His Finery, and His People's Comments

Allah tells us how Qarun went forth one day before his people with his magnificent regalia; wearing his fine clothes, accompanied by his fine horses, his servants and retinue. When those whose desires and inclinations were for the world saw his adornments and splendor, they wished that they could have the same as he had been given, and said:

يلَيْتَ لَنَا مِثْلَ مَآ أُوتِىَ قَـرُونُ إِنَّهُ لَذُو حَظٍّ عَظِيمٍ

(Ah, would that we had the like of what Qarun has been given! Verily, he is the owner of a great fortune.) meaning, `he is very lucky and has a great share in this world.' When the people of beneficial knowledge heard this, they said to them:

وَيْلَكُمْ ثَوَابُ اللَّهِ خَيْرٌ لِّمَنْ ءَامَنَ وَعَمِلَ صَـلِحاً

(Woe to you! The reward of Allah is better for those who believe and do righteous deeds,) `Allah's reward to His believing, righteous servants in the Hereafter is better than what you see,' as is reported in the authentic Hadith:

«يَقُولُ اللهُ تَعَالَى: أَعْدَدْتُ لِعِبَادِي الصَّالِحِينَ مَا لَا عَيْنٌ رَأَتْ وَلَا أُذُنٌ سَمِعَتْ وَلَا خَطَرَ عَلَى قَلْبِ بَشَرٍ وَاقْرَءُوا إِنْ شِئْتُمْ:

فَلاَ تَعْلَمُ نَفْسٌ مَّآ أُخْفِىَ لَهُم مِّن قُرَّةِ أَعْيُنٍ جَزَآءً بِمَا كَانُواْ يَعْمَلُونَ

(Allah has prepared for His righteous servants what no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and the heart of a human cannot comprehend. Recite, if you wish: (No person knows what is kept hidden for them of joy as a reward for what they used to do.)) (32:17).

وَلاَ يُلَقَّاهَآ إِلاَّ الصَّـبِرُونَ

(and this none shall attain except the patient.) As-Suddi said: "None shall reach Paradise except for the patient" -- as if this were the completion of the statement made by the people of knowledge. Ibn Jarir said, "This applies only to those who patiently forsake the love of this world, seeking the Hereafter. It is as if this is part of what the people of knowledge said, but it is made part of the Words of Allah, stating this fact."

So he Korah emerged before his people in his finery with his large retinue all of them in procession dressed in gold and silk garments and mounted on adorned horses and mules. Those who desired the life of this world said ‘O yā is for drawing attention would that we had the like of what Korah has been given this world. Truly he enjoys great fortune’ abundant fortune in it.

إِنَّمَا أُوتِيتُهُ عَلَىٰ عِلْمٍ عِندِي (This is given to me because of knowledge (I have) with me- 28:78). Some commentators are of the view that "knowledge" in this sentence refers to the understanding of Torah. As reported in some narrations, Qarun remembered Torah by heart and was an authority on it. He was one of the seventy scholars whom Sayyidna Musa (علیہ السلام) had selected for Miqat (the appointed time and place for having conversation with Allah). But he became conceited on his knowledge, and regarded it as his personal achievement. The object of his above-referred utterance was to convey that whatever wealth he had possessed was the direct result of his personal skill and intelligence. Hence, he himself had the right on it, and that no one had done any favour to him.

However, it is more plausible in the context that the knowledge he was referring to as the basic cause of his being wealthy, was the understanding and skill of managing trade and industry, which brings in wealth. Thus the meaning is that whatever wealth he had collected had come to him as a result of his personal skill and efforts, and there was no favour of Allah Ta’ ala involved in it. What the foolish conceited man had ignored was that his skill, understanding, and experience were also the gift of Allah. He could not have gained them on his own.

أَوَلَمْ يَعْلَمْ أَنَّ اللَّـهَ قَدْ أَهْلَكَ مِن قَبْلِهِ (Did he not know that Allah had destroyed, from the generations before him...28:78). The real answer to Qarun's assertion that he had collected all his wealth by his personal skill and efforts is the one mentioned above; that even if it is accepted for a moment that he had acquired his wealth by his personal skill and knowledge, the point is that this knowledge and experience was also the gift of Allah Ta’ ala. But in order to bring home the more important aspect of the subject, the Qur'an has stated that the abundance of wealth is of no avail and is devoid of merit, nor does it help in distress. As a proof of that, the example of the wealthy from the earlier generations has been quoted, that when they disobeyed and rejected the truth, they were suddenly caught by the torment of Allah Ta’ ala.
