28:78 Al-Qasas (The Stories)

فـ { قَالَ } قارون -رادا لنصيحتهم، كافرا بنعمة ربه-: { إِنَّمَا أُوتِيتُهُ عَلَى عِلْمٍ عِنْدِي } أي: إنما أدركت هذه الأموال بكسبي ومعرفتي بوجوه المكاسب، وحذقي، أو على علم من اللّه بحالي، يعلم أني أهل لذلك، فلم تنصحوني على ما أعطاني للّه تعالى؟ قال تعالى مبينا أن عطاءه، ليس دليلا على حسن حالة المعطي: { أَوَلَمْ يَعْلَمْ أَنَّ اللَّهَ قَدْ أَهْلَكَ مِنْ قَبْلِهِ مِنَ الْقُرُونِ مَنْ هُوَ أَشَدُّ مِنْهُ قُوَّةً وَأَكْثَرُ جَمْعًا } فما المانع من إهلاك قارون، مع مُضِيِّ عادتنا وسنتنا بإهلاك من هو مثله وأعظم، إذ فعل ما يوجب الهلاك؟.{ وَلَا يُسْأَلُ عَنْ ذُنُوبِهِمُ الْمُجْرِمُونَ } بل يعاقبهم اللّه، ويعذبهم على ما يعلمه منهم، فهم، وإن أثبتوا لأنفسهم حالة حسنة، وشهدوا لها بالنجاة، فليس قولهم مقبولا، وليس ذلك دافعا عنهم من العذاب شيئا، لأن ذنوبهم غير خفية، فإنكارهم لا محل له، فلم يزل قارون مستمرا على عناده وبغيه، وعدم قبول نصيحة قومه، فرحا بطرا قد أعجبته نفسه، وغره ما أوتيه من الأموال.

يقول تعالى مخبرًا عن جواب قارون لقومه حين نصحوه وأرشدوه إلى الخير "قال إنما أوتيته على علم عندي" أي أنا لا أفتقر إلى ما تقولون فإن الله تعالى إنما أعطاني هذا المال لعلمه بأني أستحقه ولمحبته لي فتقديره إنما أعطيته لعلم الله في أني أهل له وهذا كقوله تعالى: "وإذا مس الإنسان ضر دعانا ثم إذا خولناه نعمة منا قال إنما أوتيته على علم" أي على علم من الله بي وكقوله تعالى "ولئن أذقناه رحمة منا من بعد ضراء مسته ليقولن هذا لي" أي هذا أستحقه: وقد روي عن بعضهم أنه أراد "إنما أوتيته على علم عندي" أي أنه كان يعاني علم الكيمياء وهذا القول ضعيف لأن علم الكيمياء في نفسه علم باطل لأن قلب الأعيان لا يقدر أحد عليها إلا الله عز وجل قال الله تعالى: "يا أيها الناس ضرب مثل فاستمعوا له إن الذين تدعون من دون الله لن يخلقوا ذبابا ولو اجتمعوا له" وفي الصحيح أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: "يقول الله ومن أظلم ممن ذهب يخلق كخلقي فليخلقوا ذرة فليخلقوا شعيرة" وهذا ورد في المصورين الذين يشبهون بخلق الله في مجرد الصورة الظاهرة أو الشكل فكيف بمن يدعي أنه يحيل ماهية هذه الذات إلى ماهية ذات أخرى هذا زور ومحال وجهل وضلال وإنما يقدرون على الصبغ في الصورة الظاهرة وهي كذب وزغل وتمويه وترويج أنه صحيح في نفس الأمر وليس كذلك قطعا لا محالة ولم يثبت بطريق شرعي أنه صح مع أحد من الناس من هذه الطريقة التي يتعاطاها هؤلاء الجهلة الفسقة الأفاكون فأما ما يجريه الله سبحانه من خرق العوائد على يدي بعض الأولياء من قلب بعض الأعيان ذهبا أو فضة أو نحو ذلك فهذا أمر لا ينكره مسلم ولا يرده مؤمن ولكن هذا ليس من قبيل الصناعات وإنما هذا عن مشيئة رب الأرض والسماوات واختياره وفعله كما روي عن حيوة بن شريح المصري رحمه الله أنه سأله سائل فلم يكن عنده ما يعطيه ورأى ضرورته فأخذ حصاة من الأرض فأجالها في كفه ثم ألقاها إلى ذلك السائل فإذا هي ذهب أحمر. والأحاديث والآثار في هذا كثيرة جدا يطول ذكرها وقال بعضهم إن قارون كان يعرف الاسم الأعظم فدعا الله به فتمول بسببه. والصحيح المعنى الأول ولهذا قال الله تعالى رادا عليه فما ادعاه من اعتناء الله به فيما أعطاه من المال "أو لم يعلم أن الله قد أهلك من قبله من القرون من هو أشد منه قوة وأكثر جمعا" أي قد كان من هو أكثر منه مالا وما كان ذلك عن محبة منا له وقد أهلكهم الله مع ذلك بكفرهم وعدم شكرهم ولهذا قال "ولا يسأل عن ذنوبهم المجرمون" أي لكثرة ذنوبهم. قال قتادة: "على علم عندي" على خير عندي وقال السدي على علم أني أهل لذلك. وقد أجاد في تفسير هذه الآية الإمام عبدالرحمن بن زيد بن أسلم فإنه قال في قوله: "قال إنما أوتيته على علم عندي "قال لولا رضا الله عني ومعرفته بفضلي ما أعطاني هذا المال وقرأ "أولم يعلم أن الله قد أهلك من قبله من القرون من هو أشد منه قوة وأكثر جمعا" الآية. وهكذا يقول من قل علمه إذا رأى من وسع الله عليه لولا أن يستحق ذلك لما أعطي.

Allah informs us how Qarun responded to the exhortations of his people when they sought to guide him

قَالَ إِنَّمَآ أُوتِيتُهُ عَلَى عِلْمٍ عِندِى

(He said: "This has been given to me only because of the knowledge I possess.") meaning, `I have no need of your advice; Allah has only given me this wealth because He knows that I deserve it and because He loves me. ' In other words: `He has given it to me because He knows that I am fit for this.' This is like the Ayat:

فَإِذَا مَسَّ الإِنسَـنَ ضُرٌّ دَعَانَا ثُمَّ إِذَا خَوَّلْنَـهُ نِعْمَةً مِّنَّا قَالَ إِنَّمَآ أُوتِيتُهُ عَلَى عِلْمٍ

(When harm touches man, he calls upon Us; then when We have changed it into a favor from Us, he says: "Only because of knowledge I obtained it.") (39:49) An alternative interpretation of this Ayah says that the meaning is: "Only because of what Allah knows about me did I obtain this favor." This is like His saying:

وَلَئِنْ أَذَقْنَـهُ رَحْمَةً مِّنَّا مِن بَعْدِ ضَرَّآءَ مَسَّتْهُ لَيَقُولَنَّ هَـذَا لِى

(And truly, if We give him a taste of mercy from Us, after some adversity has touched him, he is sure to say: "This is from me.") (41:50) meaning, "I deserved it." Imam `Abdur-Rahman bin Zayd bin Aslam explained this Ayah very well. Concerning the phrase,

قَالَ إِنَّمَآ أُوتِيتُهُ عَلَى عِلْمٍ عِندِى

(He said: "This has been given to me only because of the knowledge I possess.") He said: "Were it not for the fact that Allah is pleased with me and knows my virtue, He would not have given me this wealth." And He said:

أَوَلَمْ يَعْلَمْ أَنَّ اللَّهَ قَدْ أَهْلَكَ مِن قَبْلِهِ مِنَ الْقُرُونِ مَنْ هُوَ أَشَدُّ مِنْهُ قُوَّةً وَأَكْثَرُ جَمْعاً

(Did he not know that Allah had destroyed before him generations, men who were stronger than him in might and greater in the amount they had collected) This is what those who have little knowledge say when they see a person whom Allah has granted a lot of wealth; they say that if he did not deserve it, Allah would not have given it to him.

He said ‘In fact I have been given it that is this wealth because of knowledge I possess’ in other words in return for it — he was the most knowledgeable of the Children of Israel in the Torah after Moses and Aaron. God exalted be He says Does he not know that God had already destroyed before him generations communities of men stronger than him in might and greater in the amassing? of wealth; in other words he does know this. And God destroys them and the guilty will not be questioned about their sins because of God’s knowledge of these sins and so they will be admitted into the Fire without a reckoning.

إِنَّمَا أُوتِيتُهُ عَلَىٰ عِلْمٍ عِندِي (This is given to me because of knowledge (I have) with me- 28:78). Some commentators are of the view that "knowledge" in this sentence refers to the understanding of Torah. As reported in some narrations, Qarun remembered Torah by heart and was an authority on it. He was one of the seventy scholars whom Sayyidna Musa (علیہ السلام) had selected for Miqat (the appointed time and place for having conversation with Allah). But he became conceited on his knowledge, and regarded it as his personal achievement. The object of his above-referred utterance was to convey that whatever wealth he had possessed was the direct result of his personal skill and intelligence. Hence, he himself had the right on it, and that no one had done any favour to him.

However, it is more plausible in the context that the knowledge he was referring to as the basic cause of his being wealthy, was the understanding and skill of managing trade and industry, which brings in wealth. Thus the meaning is that whatever wealth he had collected had come to him as a result of his personal skill and efforts, and there was no favour of Allah Ta’ ala involved in it. What the foolish conceited man had ignored was that his skill, understanding, and experience were also the gift of Allah. He could not have gained them on his own.

أَوَلَمْ يَعْلَمْ أَنَّ اللَّـهَ قَدْ أَهْلَكَ مِن قَبْلِهِ (Did he not know that Allah had destroyed, from the generations before him...28:78). The real answer to Qarun's assertion that he had collected all his wealth by his personal skill and efforts is the one mentioned above; that even if it is accepted for a moment that he had acquired his wealth by his personal skill and knowledge, the point is that this knowledge and experience was also the gift of Allah Ta’ ala. But in order to bring home the more important aspect of the subject, the Qur'an has stated that the abundance of wealth is of no avail and is devoid of merit, nor does it help in distress. As a proof of that, the example of the wealthy from the earlier generations has been quoted, that when they disobeyed and rejected the truth, they were suddenly caught by the torment of Allah Ta’ ala.
