2:80 Al-Baqara (The Cow)

ذكر أفعالهم القبيحة, ثم ذكر مع هذا أنهم يزكون أنفسهم, ويشهدون لها بالنجاة من عذاب الله, والفوز بثوابه, وأنهم لن تمسهم النار إلا أياما معدودة, أي: قليلة تعد بالأصابع, فجمعوا بين الإساءة والأمن. ولما كان هذا مجرد دعوى, رد الله تعالى عليهم فقال: { قُلْ } لهم يا أيها الرسول { أَتَّخَذْتُمْ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ عَهْدًا } أي بالإيمان به وبرسله وبطاعته, فهذا الوعد الموجب لنجاة صاحبه الذي لا يتغير ولا يتبدل. { أَمْ تَقُولُونَ عَلَى اللَّهِ مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ } ؟ فأخبر تعالى أن صدق دعواهم متوقفة على أحد هذين الأمرين اللذين لا ثالث لهما: إما أن يكونوا قد اتخذوا عند الله عهدا, فتكون دعواهم صحيحة. وإما أن يكونوا متقولين عليه فتكون كاذبة, فيكون أبلغ لخزيهم وعذابهم، وقد علم من حالهم أنهم لم يتخذوا عند الله عهدا, لتكذيبهم كثيرا من الأنبياء, حتى وصلت بهم الحال إلى أن قتلوا طائفة منهم, ولنكولهم عن طاعة الله ونقضهم المواثيق، فتعين بذلك أنهم متقولون مختلقون, قائلون عليه ما لا يعلمون، والقول عليه بلا علم, من أعظم المحرمات, وأشنع القبيحات.

يقول تعالى إخبارا عن اليهود فيما نقلوه وادعوه لأنفسهم من أنهم لن تمسهم النار إلا أياما معدودة ثم ينجون منها فرد الله عليهم ذلك بقوله تعالى "قل أتخذتم عند الله عهدا" أي بذلك فإن كان قد وقع عهد فهو لا يخلف عهده ولكن هذا ما جرى ولا كان ولهذا أتى بأم التي بمعنى بل تقولون على الله ما لا تعلمون من الكذب والافتراء عليه. قال محمد بن إسحق بن سيف عن سليمان عن مجاهد عن ابن عباس أن اليهود كانوا يقولون إن هذه الدنيا سبعة آلاف سنة وإنما نعذب بكل ألف سنة يوما في النار وإنما هي سبعة أيام معدودة فأنزل الله تعالى "وقالوا لن تمسنا النار إلا أياما معدودة" إلى قوله "خالدون" ثم رواه عن محمد عن سعيد أو عكرمة عن ابن عباس بنحوه وقال العوفي عن ابن عباس "وقالوا لن تمسنا النار إلا أياما معدودة" اليهود قالوا لن تمسنا النار إلا أربعين ليلة زاد غيره وهي مدة عبادتهم العجل وحكاه القرطبي عن ابن عباس وقتادة وقال الضحاك قال ابن عباس زعمت اليهود أنهم وجدوا في التوراة مكتوبا إن ما بين طرفي جهنم مسيرة أربعين سنة إلى أن ينتهوا إلى شجرة الزقوم التي هي ثابتة في أصل الجحيم وقال أعداء الله إنما نعذب حتى ننتهي إلى شجرة الزقوم فتذهب جهنم وتهلك. فذلك قوله تعالى "وقالوا لن تمسنا النار إلا أياما معدودة" وقال: عبدالرزاق عن معمر عن قتادة "وقالوا لن تمسنا النار إلا أياما معدودة" يعني الأيام التي عبدنا فيها العجل وقال عكرمة خاصمت اليهود رسول الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم - فقالوا لن ندخل النار إلا أربعين ليلة وسيخلفنا فيها قوم آخرون يعنون محمدا - صلى الله عليه وسلم - وأصحابه رضي الله عنهم فقال رسول الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم - بيده على رءوسهم " بل أنتم خالدون مخلدون لا يخلفكم فيها أحد " فأنزل الله عز وجل "وقالوا لن تمسنا النار إلا أياما معدودة" الآية. وقال الحافظ أبو بكر بن مردويه رحمه الله حدثنا عبدالرحمن بن جعفر حدثنا محمد بن محمد بن صخر حدثنا أبو عبدالرحمن المقرئ حدثنا ليث بن سعد حدثني سعيد بن أبى سعيد عن أبي هريرة قال لما فتحت خيبر أهديت لرسول الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم - شاة فيها سم فقال رسول الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم - "اجمعوا إلي كان من اليهود ههنا" فقال لهم رسول الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم - "من أبوكم؟" قالوا فلان قال "كذبتم بل أبوكم فلان" فقالوا صدقت وبررت ثم قال لهم "هل أنتم صادقي عن شيء إن سألتكم عنه؟" قالوا نعم يا أبا القاسم وإن كذبناك عرفت كذبنا كما عرفته في أبينا فقال: لهم رسول الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم - "من أهل النار؟" فقالوا نكون فيها يسيرا ثم تخلفونا فيها فقال: لهم رسول الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم - "اخسئوا والله لا نخلفكم فيها أبدا" ثم قال لهم رسول الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم - "هل أنتم صادقي عن شيء إن سألتكم عنه؟" قالوا: نعم يا أبا القاسم قال: "هل جعلتم في هذه الشاة سما؟" فقالوا نعم قال "فما حملكم على ذلك" فقالوا: أردنا إن كنت كاذبا أن نستريح منك وإن كنت نبيا لم يضرك ورواه الإمام أحمد والبخاري والنسائي من حديث الليث بن سعد بنحوه.

The Jews hope They will only remain in the Fire for a Few Days

Allah mentioned the claim of the Jews, that the Fire will only touch them for a few days, and then they will be saved from it. Allah refuted this claim by saying,

قُلْ أَتَّخَذْتُمْ عِندَ اللَّهِ عَهْدًا

(Say (O Muhammad to them): "Have you taken a covenant from Allah'). Hence, the Ayah proclaims, `if you had a promise from Allah for that, then Allah will never break His promise. However, such promise never existed. Rather, what you say, about Allah, you have no knowledge of and you thus utter a lie about Him.' Al-`Awfi said that Ibn `Abbas said about the Ayah,

وَقَالُواْ لَن تَمَسَّنَا النَّارُ إِلاَّ أَيَّامًا مَّعْدُودَةً

(And they (Jews) say, "The Fire shall not touch us but for a few numbered days."). "The Jews said, `The Fire will only touch us for forty days."' Others added that this was the period during which the Jews worshipped the calf.

(When Khaybar was conquered, a roasted poisoned sheep was presented to the Prophet as a gift (by the Jews). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered, `Assemble before me all the Jews who were here.' The Jews were summoned and the Prophet said (to them), `Who is your father' They replied, `So-and-so.' He said, `You have lied; your father is so-and-so.' They said, `You have uttered the truth.' He said, `Will you now tell me the truth, if I ask you about something' They replied, `Yes, O Abul-Qasim; and if we should tell a lie, you will know our lie as you have about our fathers.' On that he asked, `Who are the people of the (Hell) Fire' They said, `We shall remain in the (Hell) Fire for a short period, and after that you will replace us in it.' The Prophet said, `May you be cursed and humiliated in it! By Allah, we shall never replace you in it.' Then he asked, `Will you tell me the truth if I ask you a question' They said, `Yes, O Abul-Qasim.' He asked, `Have you poisoned this sheep' They said, `Yes.' He asked, `What made you do so' They said, `We wanted to know if you were a liar, in which case we would get rid of you, and if you were a Prophet then the poison would not harm you.') Imam Ahmad, Al-Bukhari and An-Nasa'i recorded similarly.

And they say when the Prophet promised them the Fire ‘the Fire shall not touch us that is afflict us save a number of days’ only a short time of forty days the same length of time their forefathers worshipped the calf after which time it the Fire will cease. Say to them Muhammad (s) ‘Have you taken with God a covenant? a pledge from Him to this? God will not fail in His covenant in this matter or — nay — say you against God what you do not know? a’ttakhadhtum the conjunctive hamza has been omitted on account of the interrogative hamza sufficing.

The claim of the Jews that they would not be sent to Hell for their sins, or, if at all, only for a few days, has been interpreted by the Commentators in different ways. One of them is as follows:-

The principle is common to all the Shari'ahs that if a believer commits sins, he will receive a punishment in Hell for some time and in accordance with the degree and nature of his sins, but as he possesses 'Iman ایمان (faith), he will not be assigned to Hell for ever, and will be released after having served his term. Now, the argument on which the assertion of the Jews was based was that since the Shari ah of Sayyidna Musa (Moses علیہ السلام) had not, in their view, been abrogated, they were true believers (Mumins مؤمنین ), and had not turned into infidels (Kafirs) by denying the prophethood of Sayyidna ` Isa (علیہ السلام) (Jesus ( and of Sayyidna Muhammad ﷺ ; hence - so the argument ran - if they were sent to Hell in punishment of some sin, they would again' be taken out after a few days. This false assertion is, thus based on another false assertion. The Torah never declares that the Shari` ah of Sayyidna Musa (علیہ السلام) is meant to last forever. To claim perpetuity for it is an unfounded and false assertion, and hence the Jews who made such a claim and denied the prophethood of Sayyidna ` Isa (علیہ السلام) and of Sayyidna Muhammad ﷺ ، must on account of this denial be held to be infidels and disbelievers (Kafirs کفار ). And no Book of Allah holds out to the infidels the promise that they would be released from Hell after a while. The present verse refers to such a promise as the "pledge" of Allah. Since Allah has never made such a promise, it goes to show that the Jews were making a baseless claim.

(And they say: The Fire (of punishment) will not touch us save for a certain number of days�) [2:80]. Isma'il ibn Abi al-Qasim al-Sufi informed us> Abu'l-Husayn Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Hamid al-'Attar> Ahmad ibn al-Hasan ibn 'Abd al-Jabbar> Abu'l-Qasim 'Abd Allah ibn Sa'd al-Zuhri> his father and paternal uncle> their father> Ibn Ishaq> Muhammad ibn Abi Muhammad> 'Ikrima> Ibn 'Abbas who said: �Allah's Messenger, Allah bless him and give him peace, came to Medina and found the Jews saying: 'This worldly life will last seven thousand years. And for every one thousand years of the days of this worldly life people will be tormented in hell fire for one day of the days of the Afterlife. Thus, the torment will last for only seven days'. Allah, exalted is He, revealed concerning this saying: (And they say: The Fire (of punishment) will not touch us save for a certain number of days)�. Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Tamimi informed us> 'Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Hayyan> Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Rahman al-Razi> Sahl ibn 'Uthman> Marwan ibn Mu'awiyah> Juwaybir> al-Dahhak> Ibn 'Abbas said concerning the verse (And they say: The Fire (of punishment) will not touch us save for a certain number of days): �The people of the Book found out that from one end of hell fire to the other a journey of forty years was needed, and, therefore, they said: 'We shall not be tormented in hell fire except for the period of time specified in the Torah'. And so they proceeded in their torment until they reached Saqar wherein is the tree of Zaqqum until the certain number of days which they mentioned came to an end. The denizens of hell fire then said to them: 'you claimed you will not be tormented in hell fire except for a certain number of days. Well, those certain number of days has elapsed, but eternity remains' �.
