9:79 At-Tawba (The Repentance)

وهذا أيضًا من مخازي المنافقين، فكانوا ـ قبحهم اللّه ـ لا يدعون شيئا من أمور الإسلام والمسلمين يرون لهم مقالا، إلا قالوا وطعنوا بغيا وعدوانا، فلما حثَّ اللّه ورسوله على الصدقة، بادر المسلمون إلى ذلك، وبذلوا من أموالهم كل على حسب حاله، منهم المكثر، ومنهم المقل، فيلمزون المكثر منهم، بأن قصده بنفقته الرياء والسمعة، وقالوا للمقل الفقير‏:‏ إن اللّه غني عن صدقة هذا، فأنزل اللّه تعالى‏:‏ ‏{‏الَّذِينَ يَلْمِزُونَ‏}‏ أي‏:‏ يعيبون ويطعنون ‏{‏الْمُطَّوِّعِينَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِي الصَّدَقَاتِ‏}‏ فيقولون‏:‏ مراءون، قصدهم الفخر والرياء‏.‏ ‏{‏و‏}‏ يلمزون ‏{‏الَّذِينَ لَا يَجِدُونَ إِلَّا جُهْدَهُمْ‏}‏ فيخرجون ما استطاعوا ويقولون‏:‏ اللّه غني عن صدقاتهم ‏{‏فَيَسْخَرُونَ مِنْهُمْ‏}‏ ‏.‏ فقابلهم الله على صنيعهم بأن ‏{‏سَخِرَ اللَّهُ مِنْهُمْ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ‏}‏ فإنهم جمعوا في كلامهم هذا بين عدة محاذير‏.‏ منها‏:‏ تتبعهم لأحوال المؤمنين، وحرصهم على أن يجدوا مقالا يقولونه فيهم، واللّه يقول‏:‏ ‏{‏إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يُحِبُّونَ أَنْ تَشِيعَ الْفَاحِشَةُ فِي الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ‏}‏ ومنها‏:‏ طعنهم بالمؤمنين لأجل إيمانهم، كفر باللّه تعالى وبغض للدين‏.‏ ومنها‏:‏ أن اللمز محرم، بل هو من كبائر الذنوب في أمور الدنيا، وأما اللمز في أمر الطاعة، فأقبح وأقبح‏.‏ ومنها‏:‏ أن من أطاع اللّه وتطوع بخصلة من خصال الخير، فإن الذي ينبغي ‏[‏هو‏]‏ إعانته، وتنشيطه على عمله، وهؤلاء قصدوا تثبيطهم بما قالوا فيهم، وعابوهم عليه‏.‏ ومنها‏:‏ أن حكمهم على من أنفق مالا كثيرا بأنه مراء، غلط فاحش، وحكم على الغيب، ورجم بالظن، وأي شر أكبر من هذا‏؟‏‏!‏‏!‏ ومنها‏:‏ أن قولهم لصاحب الصدقة القليلة‏:‏ ‏\"‏اللّه غني عن صدقة هذا‏\"‏ كلام مقصوده باطل، فإن اللّه غني عن صدقة المتصدق بالقليل والكثير، بل وغني عن أهل السماوات والأرض، ولكنه تعالى أمر العباد بما هم مفتقرون إليه، فاللّه ـ وإن كان غنيا عنهم ـ فهم فقراء إليه ‏{‏فمن يعمل مثقال ذرة خيرا يره‏}‏ وفي هذا القول من التثبيط عن الخير ما هو ظاهر بين، ولهذا كان جزاؤهم أن سخر اللّه منهم، ولهم عذاب أليم‏.‏

وهذا أيضا من صفات المنافقين لا يسلم أحد من عيبهم ولمن هم في جميع الأحوال حتى ولا المتصدقون يسلمون منهم إن جاء أحد منهم بمال جزيل قالوا هذا مراء وإن جاء بشيء يسير قالوا إن الله لغني عن صدقة هذا. كما روى البخاري حدثنا عبيد الله بن سعيد حدثنا أبو النعمان البصري حدثنا شعبة عن سليمان عن أبي وائل عن أبي مسعود رضي الله عنه قال: لما نزلت آية الصدقة كنا نحامل على ظهورنا فجاء رجل فتصدق بشيء كثير فقالوا مرائي وجاء رجل فتصدق بصاع فقالوا إن الله لغني عن صدقة هذا. فنزلت " الذين يلمزون المطوعين " الآية. وفي رواه مسلم أيضا في صحيحه من حديث شعبة به وقال الإمام أحمد حدثنا يزيد الجريري عن أبي السليل قال: وقف علينا رجل في مجلسنا بالبقيع فقال: حدثني أبي أو عمي أنه رأى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم بالبقيع وهو يقول من يتصدق بصدقة أشهد له بها يوم القيامة " قال فحللت من عمامتي لوثا أو لوثين وأنا أريد أن أتصدق بهما فأدركني ما يدرك ابن آدم فعقدت علىَّ عمامتي. فجاء رجل لم أر بالبقيع رجلا أشد منه سوادا ولا أصغر منه ولا أذم ببعير ساقه لم أر بالبقيع ناقة أحسن منها. فقال يا رسول الله أصدقة؟ قال " نعم " قال دونك هذه الناقة قال فلمزه رجل فقال هذا يتصدق بهذه والله لهي خير منه. قال فسمعها رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فقال " كذبت بل هو خير منك ومنها " ثلاث مرات ثم قال " ويل لأصحاب المئين من الإبل " ثلاثا قالوا إلا من يا رسول الله؟ قال " إلا من قال بالمال هكذا وهكذا " وجمع بين كفيه عن يمينه وعن شماله ثم قال " قد أفلح المزهد المجهد " ثلاثا. المزهد في العيش المجهد في العبادة وقال علي بن أبي طلحة عن ابن عباس في هذه الآية قال جاء عبدالرحمن بن عوف بأربعين أوقية من ذهب إلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وجاءه رجل من الأنصار بصاع من طعام فقال بعض المنافقين والله ما جاء عبدالرحمن بما جاء به إلا رياء وقالوا إن الله ورسوله لغنيان عن هذا الصاع. وقال العوفي عن ابن عباس إن رسول الله خرج إلى الناس يوما فنادى فيهم أن اجمعوا صدقاتكم فجمع الناس صدقاتهم ثم جاء رجل من آخرهم بصاع من تمر فقال يا رسول الله هذا صاع من تمر بت ليلتي أجر بالجرير الماء حتى نلت صاعين من تمر فأمسكت أحدهما وأتيتك بالآخر فأمره رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم أن ينثره في الصدقات فسخر منه رجال وقالوا إن الله ورسوله لغنيان عن هذا وما يصنعون بصاعك من شيء ثم إن عبدالرحمن بن عوف قال لرسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم هل بقي أحد من أهل الصدقات؟ فقال له رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم" لم يبق أحد غيرك " فقال له عبدالرحمن بن عوف فإن عندي مائة أوقية من الذهب في الصدقات فقال له عمر بن الخطاب رضي الله عنه أمجنون أنت؟ قال ليس بي جنون قال أفعلت ما فعلت؟ قال نعم مالي ثمانية آلاف أما أربعة آلاف فأقرضها ربي وأما أربعة آلاف فلي فقال له رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم " بارك الله لك فيما أمسكت وفيما أعطيت" ولمزه المنافقون فقالوا والله ما أعطى عبدالرحمن عطيته إلا رياء وهم كاذبون إنما كان به متطوعا فأنزل الله عز وجل عذره وعذر صاحبه المسكين الذي جاء بالصاع من التمر فقال تعالى في كتابه" الذين يلمزون المطوعين من المؤمنين في الصدقات" الآية. وهكذا روى عن مجاهد وغير واحد وقال ابن إسحق كان من المطوعين من المؤمنين في الصدقات عبد عبدالرحمن بن عوف تصدق بأربعة آلاف درهم وعاصم بن عدي أخو بني العجلان وذلك أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم رغب في الصدقة وحض عليها فقال عبدالرحمن بن عوف فتصدق بأربعة آلاف وقام عاصم بن عدي وتصدق بمائة وسق من تمر فلمزوهما وقالوا ما هذا إلا رياء وكان الذي تصدق بجهده أبو عقيل أخو بني أنيف الأراشي حليف بن عمرو بن عوف أتى بصاع من تمر فأفرغه في الصدقة فتضاحكوا به فقالوا إن الله لغني عن صاع أبي عقيل وقال الحافظ أبو بكر البزار حدثنا طالوت بن عباد حدثنا أبو عونة عن عمرو بن أبي سلمة عن أبيه عن أبي هريرة قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم تصدقوا فإني أريد أن أبعث بعثا قال فجاء عبدالرحمن بن عوف فقال يا رسول الله عندي أربعة آلاف ألفين أقرضهما ربي وألفين لعيالي فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم بارك الله فيك فيما أعطيت وبارك لك فيما أمسكت وبات رجل من الأنصار فأصاب صاعين من تمر فقال يا رسول الله أصبت صاعين من تمر صاع أقرضه لربي وصاع لعيالي قال فلمزه المنافقون وقالوا ما أعطوا الذي أعطى ابن عوف إلا رياء وقالوا ألم يكن الله ورسوله غنيين عن صاع هذا؟ فأنزل الله" الذين يلمزون المطوعين من المؤمنين في الصدقات والذين لا يجدون إلا جهدهم فيسخرون منهم" الآية. ثم رواه عن أبي كامل عن أبي عوانة عن عمرو بن أبي سلمة عن أبيه مرسلا قال قال ولم يسنده أحد إلا طالوت وقال الإمام أبو جعفر بن جرير حدثنا ابن وكيع حدثنا زيد بن الحباب عن موسى عن عبيد حدثني خالد بن يسار عن ابن أبي عقيل عن أبيه قال بت أجر الجرير على ظهري على صاعين من تمر فانقلبت بأحدهما إلى أهلي يتبلغون به وجئت بالآخر أتقرب إلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وإله وسلم فأتيته فأخبرته فقال انثره في الصدقة قال فسخر القوم وقالوا لقد كان الله غنيا عن صدقة هذا المسكين فأنزل الله الذين يلمزون المطوعين. الآيتين. وكذا رواه الطبراني من حديث زيد بن الحباب به وقال اسم أبي عقيل حباب ويقال عبدالرحمن بن عبدالله بن ثعلبة وقوله فيسخرون منهم سخر الله منهم هذا من باب المقابلة على صنيعهم واستهزائهم بالمؤمنين لأن الجزاء من جنس العمل فعاملهم معاملة من سخر منهم انتصارا للمؤمنين في الدنيا وأعد للمنافقين في الآخرة عذابا أليما لأن الجزاء من جنس العمل.

Hypocrites defame Believers Who give the Little Charity They can afford

Among the traits of the hypocrites is that they will not leave anyone without defaming and ridiculing him in all circumstances even those who give away charity. If, for instance, someone gives away a large amount, the hypocrites say that he is showing off. If someone gives away a small amount they say that Allah stands not in need of this man's charity. Al-Bukhari recorded that `Ubaydullah bin Sa`id said that Abu An-Nu`man Al-Basri said that Shu`bah narrated that Sulayman said that Abu Wa'il said that Abu Mas`ud said, "When the verses of charity were revealed, we used to work as porters. A man came and distributed objects of charity in abundance and they (hypocrites) said, `He is showing off.' Another man came and gave a Sa` (a small measure of food grains); they said, `Allah is not in need of this small amount of charity.' Then the Ayah was revealed;

الَّذِينَ يَلْمِزُونَ الْمُطَّوِّعِينَ

(Those who defame the volunteers...)" Muslim collected this Hadith in the Sahih. Al-`Awfi narrated that Ibn `Abbas said, "One day, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out to the people and called them to bring forth their charity, and they started bringing their charity. Among the last to come forth was a man who brought a Sa` of dates, saying, `O Allah's Messenger! This is a Sa` of dates. I spent the night bringing water and earned two Sa` of dates for my work. I kept one Sa` and brought you the other Sa`. ' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered him to add it to the charity. Some men mocked that man, saying, `Allah and His Messenger are not in need of this charity. What benefit would this Sa` of yours bring' `Abdur-Rahman bin `Awf asked Allah's Messenger ﷺ, `Are there any more people who give charity' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,

«لَمْ يَبْقَ أَحَدٌ غَيْرُك»

(None besides you!) `Abdur-Rahman bin `Awf said, `I will give a hundred Uqiyah of gold as a charity.' `Umar bin Al-Khattab said to him, `Are you crazy' `Abdur-Rahman said, `I am not crazy.' `Umar said, `Have you given what you said would give' `Abdur-Rahman said, `Yes. I have eight thousand (Dirhams), four thousand I give as a loan to my Lord and four thousand I keep for myself.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,

«بَارَكَ اللهُ لَكَ فِيمَا أَمْسَكْتَ وَفِيمَا أَعْطَيْت»

(May Allah bless you for what you kept and what you gave away). However, the hypocrites defamed him, `By Allah! `Abdur-Rahman gave what he gave just to show off.' They lied, for `Abdur-Rahman willingly gave that money, and Allah revealed about his innocence and the innocence of the fellow who was poor and brought only a Sa` of dates. Allah said in His Book,

الَّذِينَ يَلْمِزُونَ الْمُطَّوِّعِينَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِي الصَّدَقَـتِ

(Those who defame such of the believers who give charity voluntarily) 9:79."' A similar story was narrated from Mujahid and several others. Ibn Ishaq said, "Among the believers who gave away charity were `Abdur-Rahman bin `Awf who gave four thousand Dirhams and `Asim bin `Adi from Bani `Ajlan. This occurred after the Messenger of Allah ﷺ encouraged and called for paying charity. `Abdur-Rahman bin `Awf stood and gave away four thousand Dirhams. `Asim bin `Adi also stood and gave a hundred Wasaq of dates, but some people defamed them, saying, `They are showing off.' As for the person who gave the little that he could afford, he was Abu `Aqil, from Bani Anif Al-Arashi, who was an ally of Bani `Amr bin `Awf. He brought a Sa` of dates and added it to the charity. They laughed at him, saying, `Allah does not need the Sa` of Abu `Aqil."' Allah said,

فَيَسْخَرُونَ مِنْهُمْ سَخِرَ اللَّهُ مِنْهُمْ

(so they mock at them (believers); Allah will throw back their mockery on them) rebuking them for their evil actions and defaming the believers. Truly, the reward, or punishment, is equitable to the action. Allah treated them the way mocked people are treated, to aid the believers in this life. Allah has prepared a painful torment in the Hereafter for the hypocrites, for the recompense is similar to the deed.

When the verse concerning ‘voluntary alms’ Q. 975 was revealed a man came and gave a large amount as voluntary alms so the hypocrites said ‘He is merely showing off!’ Another man then came and gave a moderate measure of food and so they said ‘God has no need of this man’s charity!’ The following was then revealed Those who alladhīna is the subject find fault with defame the believers who offer alms voluntarily performing supererogation and such as find nothing to offer but their endeavours nothing but what they are capable of and offer it; and deride them and the predicate of the mentioned subject is the following — God Himself derides them He has requited them for their derision and theirs will be a painful chastisement.

Commentary

Mentioned in the first verse (79) are taunts thrown at Muslims who gave away in charity on a voluntary basis (Nafli Sadaqat). It appears ؓ in the Sahih of Muslim that Sayyidna Abu Masud ؓ said: ` we had orders from Allah Ta` ala that we must give Sadaqah and, believe it, we used to do manual labor for that (that is, we had no money or thing with us. We used to take out that Sadaqah too from whatever we earned through this very manual labor). Thus, Abu 'Aqil offered Sadaqah to the measure of 0.5 Sa` (approximately 1.75 kilos). Then, someone came and gave a little more than that. The hypocrites mocked at them for having brought something so insignificant in the name of Sadaqah. Allah never needs things like that. And whoever gave a little more in Sadaqah, they accused him that he had done it to show off before people. Thereupon, this verse was revealed.

Please note that, in the sentence: سَخِرَ‌ اللَّـهُ مِنْهُمْ (mocked they are by Allah - 79), the word 'mocked' stands for 'punished for their mockery'.

In the second verse (80), there is a statement about the hypocrites. It has been addressed to the Holy Prophet ﷺ . He has been told whether or not he seeks forgiveness for them makes no difference - and no matter how many times he seeks forgiveness for them, they shall not be forgiven. A detailed explanation of this appears under the comments on verse 84: لَا تُصَلِّ عَلَىٰ أَحَدٍ مِّنْهُم (and never offer a prayer on anyone of them who dies) appearing a little later.

(Those who point at such of the believers as give the alms willingly�) [9:79]. Sa'id ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Ja'far informed us> Abu 'Ali al-Faqih> Abu 'Ali Muhammad ibn Sulayman al-Maliki> Abu Musa Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna> Abu'l-Nu'man al-Hakam ibn 'Abd Allah al-'Ijli> Shu'bah> Salman> Abu Wa'il> Abu Mas'ud who said: �When the verses of alms were revealed, we used to ask to carry people stuff in exchange for a wage so that we could earn and pay alms from what we had earned. A man came and gave a lot for alms, some people commented: 'He is just showing off'. Another man came and gave a measure (sa') for alms, and they commented: 'Allah can do without the measure of this man', and so Allah revealed (Those who point at such of the believers as give the alms willingly and such as can find naught to give but their endeavours�)�. This is narrated by Bukhari from Abu Qudamah 'Ubayd Allah ibn Sa'id>> Abu Nu'man. Qatadah and others said: �The Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, encouraged people to give alms. 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf took with him four thousand silver coins and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, all my wealth consists of eight thousand silver coins, I have kept half of it for my dependents and brought the other half for you to spend it in the way of Allah'. The Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, said: 'may Allah bless you for that which you have given and for that which you have withheld'. Allah did indeed bless the wealth of 'Abd al-Rahman to the extent that when he died he was survived by two wives who inherited one eighth of his fortune. This one eighth was estimated at 160 thousand silver coins. On the same day, 'Asim ibn 'Adiyy ibn al-'Ajlan gave to charity one hundred wasq of dates while Abu 'Aqil al-Ansari gave one sa' of dates. Abu 'Aqil said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I spent the night drawing water with a rope until I earned two measures (sa') of dates; I kept one for my family and brought the other'. The Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, commanded him to spread it among the received alms. The hypocrites defamed 'Abd al-Rahman and 'Asim, saying ''Abd al-Rahman and 'Asim gave alms only to show off. Allah and His Messenger can indeed do without the measure (sa') of Abu 'Aqil; he only wished to appear righteous'. And so Allah, exalted is He, revealed this verse�.
