9:128 At-Tawba (The Repentance)

يمتن ‏[‏تعالى‏]‏ على عباده المؤمنين بما بعث فيهم النبي الأمي الذي من أنفسهم، يعرفون حاله، ويتمكنون من الأخذ عنه، ولا يأنفون عن الانقياد له، وهو ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ في غاية النصح لهم، والسعي في مصالحهم‏.‏ ‏{‏عَزِيزٌ عَلَيْهِ مَا عَنِتُّمْ‏}‏ أي‏:‏ يشق عليه الأمر الذي يشق عليكم ويعنتكم‏.‏ ‏{‏حَرِيصٌ عَلَيْكُمْ‏}‏ فيحب لكم الخير، ويسعى جهده في إيصاله إليكم، ويحرص على هدايتكم إلى الإيمان، ويكره لكم الشر، ويسعى جهده في تنفيركم عنه‏.‏ ‏{‏بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ رَءُوفٌ رَحِيمٌ‏}‏ أي‏:‏ شديد الرأفة والرحمة بهم، أرحم بهم من والديهم‏.‏ ولهذا كان حقه مقدمًا على سائر حقوق الخلق، وواجب على الأمة الإيمان به، وتعظيمه، وتعزيره، وتوقيره

يقول تعالى ممتنا على المؤمنين بما أرسل إليهم رسولا من أنفسهم أي من جنسهم وعلى لغتهم كما قال إبراهيم عليه السلام " ربنا وابعث فيهم رسولا منهم " وقال تعالى " لقد من الله على المؤمنين إذ بعث فيهم رسولا من أنفسهم " وقال تعالى " لقد جاءكم رسول من أنفسكم " أي منكم وبلغتكم كما قال جعفر بن أبي طالب رضي الله عنه للنجاشي والمغيرة بن شعبة لرسول كسرى: إن الله بعث فينا رسولا منا نعرف نسبه وصفته ومدخله ومخرجه وصدقه وأمانته وذكر الحديث. وقال سفيان بن عيينة عن جعفر بن محمد عن أبيه في قوله تعالى " لقد جاءكم رسول من أنفسكم " قال لم يصبه شيء من ولادة الجاهلية وقال صلى الله عليه وسلم " خرجت من نكاح ولم أخرج من سفاح " وقد وصل هذا من وجه آخر كما قال الحافظ أبو محمد الحسن بن عبدالرحمن الرامهرمزي في كتابه الفاصل بين الراوي والواعي. حدثنا ابن أحمد يوسف بن هارون بن زياد حدثنا ابن أبي عمر حدثنا محمد بن جعفر بن محمد قال: أشهد على أبي لحدثني عن أبيه عن جده عن علي قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم " خرجت من نكاح ولم أخرج من سفاح من لدن آدم إلى أن ولدني أبي وأمي لم يمسني من سفاح الجاهلية شيء " وقوله تعالى " عزيز عليه ما عنتم " أي يعز عليه الشيء الذي يعنت أمته ويشق عليها ولهذا جاء في الحديث المروي من طرق عنه أنه قال " بعثت بالحنيفية السمحة " وفي الصحيح " إن الدين يسر " وشريعته كلها سهلة سمحة كاملة يسيرة على من يسرها الله تعالى عليه " حريص عليكم " أي على هدايتكم ووصول النفع الدنيوي والأخروي إليكم وقال الطبراني: حدثنا محمد بن عبدالله الحضرمي حدثنا محمد بن عبدالله بن يزيد المقري حدثنا سفيان بن عيينة عن قطن عن أبي الطفيل عن أبي ذر قال: تركنا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وما طائر يقلب جناحيه في الهواء إلا وهو يذكر لنا منه علما قال وقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم " ما بقي شيء يقرب من الجنة ويباعد من النار إلا وقد بين لكم " وقال الإمام أحمد: حدثنا قطن حدثنا المسعودي عن الحسن بن سعيد عن عبدة الهذلي عن عبدالله بن مسعود قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم " إن الله لم يحرم حرمة إلا وقد علم أنه سيطلعها منكم مطلع ألا وإني آخذ بحجزكم أن تهافتوا في النار كتهافت الفراش أو الذباب " وقال الإمام أحمد: حدثنا حسن بن موسى حدثنا حماد بن سلمة عن علي بن زيد بن جدعان عن يوسف بن مهران عن ابن عباس أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم أتاه ملكان فيما يرى النائم فقعد أحدهما عند رجليه والآخر عند رأسه. فقال الذي عند رجليه للذي عند رأسه اضرب مثل هذا ومثل أمته فقال: إن مثله ومثل أمته كمثل قوم سفر انتهوا إلى رأس مفازة ولم يكن معهم من الزاد ما يقطعون به المفازة ولا ما يرجعون به فبينما هم كذلك إذ أتاهم رجل في حلة حبرة فقال: أرأيتم إن وردت بكم رياضا معشبة وحياضا رواة تتبعوني؟ فقالوا نعم قال فانطلق بهم فأوردهم رياضا معشبة وحياضا رواء فأكلوا وشربوا وسمنوا فقال لهم: ألم ألفكم على تلك الحال فجعلتم لي إن وردت بكم رياضا معشبة وحياضا رواء أن تتبعوني؟ فقالوا بلى فقال: فإن بين أيديكم رياضا هي أعشب من هذه وحياضا هي أروى من هذه فاتبعوني فقالت طائفة بلى صدق والله لنتبعنه وقالت طائفة قد رضينا بهذا نقيم عليه. وقال البزار حدثنا سلمة بن شبيب وأحمد بن منصور قالا: حدثنا إبراهيم بن الحكم بن أبان حدثنا أبي عن عكرمة عن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه أن أعرابيا جاء إلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يستعينه في شيء قال عكرمة: أراه قال في دم فأعطاه رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم شيئا ثم قال " أحسنت إليك؟ " قال الأعرابي لا ولا أجملت فغضب بعض المسلمين وهموا أن يقوموا إليه فأشار رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم إليهم أن كفوا فلما قام رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وبلغ إلى منزله دعا الأعرابي إلى البيت فقال " إنما جئتنا تسألنا فأعطيناك فقلت ما قلت " فزاده رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم شيئا وقال " أحسنت إليك؟ " فقال الأعرابي نعم فجزاك الله من أهل وعشيرة خيرا. قال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم " إنك جئتنا فسألتنا فأعطيناك فقلت ما قلت وفي أنفس أصحابي عليك من ذلك شيء فإذا جئت فقل بين أيديهم ما قلت بين يدي حتى يذهب عن صدورهم " فقال نعم. فلما جاء الأعرابي قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم " إن صاحبكم كان جاءك فسألنا فأعطيناه فقال ما قال وإنا قد دعوناه فأعطيناه فزعم أنه قد رضي كذلك يا أعرابي؟ " فقال الأعرابي: نعم فجزاك الله من أهل وعشيرة خيرا. فقال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم " إن مثلي ومثل هذا الأعرابي كمثل رجل كانت له ناقة فشردت عليه فاتبعها الناس فلم يزيدوها إلا نفورا. فقال لهم صاحب الناقة خلوا بيني وبين ناقتي فأنا أرفق بها وأنا أعلم بها فتوجه إليها وأخذ لها من قشام الأرض ودعاها حتى جاءت واستجابت وشد عليها رحلها وإني لو أطعتكم حيث قال ما قال لدخل النار " رواه البزار ثم قال لا نعلمه يروى إلا من هذا الوجه " قلت "وهو ضعيف بحال إبراهيم بن الحكم بن أبان والله أعلم وقوله " بالمؤمنين رءوف رحيم " كقوله " واخفض جناحك لمن اتبعك من المؤمنين فإن عصوك فقل إني بريء مما تعملون وتوكل على العزيز " الرحيم ".

«بُعِثْتُ بِالْحَنِيفِيَّةِ السَّمْحَة»

(I was sent with the easy Hanifiyah monotheism way.) An authenic Hadith mentions,

«إِنَّ هَذَا الدِّينَ يُسْر»

(Verily, this religion is easy) and its Law is all easy, lenient and perfect. It is easy for those whom Allah the Exalted makes it easy.)

حَرِيصٌ عَلَيْكُمْ

(He is eager for you), that you gain guidance and acquire benefits in this life and the Hereafter. Imam Ahmad recorded that `Abdullah bin Mas`ud said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,

«إِنَّ اللهَ لَمْ يُحَرِّمْ حُرْمَةً إِلَّا وَقَدْ عَلِمَ أَنَّهُ سَيَطَّلِعُهَا مِنْكُمْ مُطَّلِعٌ، أَلَا وَإِنِّي آخِذٌ بِحُجَزِكُمْ أَنْ تَهَافَتُوا فِي النَّارِ كَتَهَافُتِ الْفَرَاشِ أَوِ الذُّبَاب»

(Verily, every matter that Allah has prohibited, He knows that some among you will breach it; but I am indeed holding you by the waist so that you do not fall in the Fire, just like butterflies and flies.) Allah's statement next,

بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ رَءُوفٌ رَّحِيمٌ

(for the believers (he is) full of pity, kind, and merciful.) 9:128, is similar to His other statement,

وَاخْفِضْ جَنَاحَكَ لِمَنِ اتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ - فَإِنْ عَصَوْكَ فَقُلْ إِنِّى بَرِىءٌ مِّمَّا تَعْمَلُونَ - وَتَوكَّلْ عَلَى الْعَزِيزِ الرَّحِيمِ

(And be kind and humble to the believers who follow you. Then if they disobey you, say: "I am innocent of what you do." And put your trust in the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful) 26:215-217. Allah the Exalted commanded His Messenger in this honorable Ayah,

فَإِن تَوَلَّوْاْ

(But if they turn away), from the glorious, pure, perfect and encompassing Law that you -- O Muhammad -- brought them,

فَقُلْ حَسْبِىَ اللَّهُ لا إِلَـهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ

(then say: "Allah is sufficient for me. There is no God but He,) Allah is sufficient for me, there is no deity worthy of worship except Him, and in Him I put my trust. Similarly, Allah said,

رَّبُّ الْمَشْرِقِ وَالْمَغْرِبِ لاَ إِلَـهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ فَاتَّخِذْهُ وَكِيلاً

((He alone is) the Lord of the east and the west; there is no God but He. So take Him alone as a guardian.) 73:9. Allah said next,

لَقَدْ جَآءَكُمْ رَسُولٌ مِّنْ أَنفُسِكُمْ

(Verily, there has come unto you a Messenger from among yourselves ...) 9:128" until the end of the Surah It is recorded in the Sahih that Zayd bin Thabit said, "I found the last Ayah in Surah Bara'ah with Khuzaymah bin Thabit." This is the end of Surah Bara'ah, all praise is due to Allah.

وَهُوَ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ

(and He is the Lord of the Mighty Throne) 9:129. He is the King and Creator of all things, and He is the Lord of the Mighty Throne (`Arsh), which is above all creation; all that is in and between the heavens and earths is under the Throne (`Arsh) and subservient to Allah's power. His knowledge encompasses all things, and His decision will certainly come to pass over all matters. He is the guardian of all things. Imam Ahmad recorded that Ibn `Abbas said that Ubayy bin Ka`b said, "The last Ayah revealed from the Qur'an was this Ayah,

لَقَدْ جَاءكُمْ رَسُولٌ مِّنْ أَنفُسِكُمْ

(Verily, there has come unto you a Messenger f rom among yourselves . . . )until the endof the Surah It is recorded in the Sahih that Zayd bin Thabit said, "I found the last Ayah in Surah Bara'ah with Khuzaymah bin Thabit . " This is the end of Surah Bara'ah, all praise is due to Allah.

Verily there has come to you a messenger from among yourselves that is one of you — Muhammad (s) — for whom it is grievous hard that you should suffer that is your suffering your experiencing hardship and encountering harm is hard on him; who is full of concern for you that you should be rightly guided; to the believers full of pity profoundly compassionate merciful desiring good for them.

Commentary

These are the last verses of Surah At-Taubah where it has been declared that the Holy Prophet ﷺ is very kind and merciful for the entire creation of Allah, particularly so for Muslims. Then, in the last verse, he has been told that he should observe patience and trust Allah even if there are people who do not come to believe despite all his efforts.

That this theme appears at the end of Surah At-Taubah happens to be very appropriate. It will be recalled that this Surah has been full of references to the declaration of withdrawal from the disbelievers, the ultimate severance of relationship with them and then fighting in Jihad against them. This is, however, the last resort of the Call to Allah subject to the condition that the initial steps of Da'wah (call) and Tabligh (communication of the Message) leave no hope of correction and betterment. But, the basic function of the prophets is to invite people to the way of Allah with love, affection, sympathy and an earnest de-sire for their well-being; if they have to face aversion from the people or have to suffer some hardships, they are supposed to leave it to Allah and place their trust in Him, for He is the Lord of the Great Throne. By saying the Rabb رَبّ or Lord of the Great ` Arsh, the purpose is to lay stress on the fact that He encompasses the entire creation.

Now there has come to you a Messenger from among yourselves; what troubles you is difficult for him; eagerly desirous is he for you, clement and ever-merciful toward the faithful. He is in contact with you through mortal nature, but he is different from you in election. " O MuḤammad, keep on saying, 'I am a mortal like you' [18:110]. I will keep on saying, 'Did He not find thee an orphan and shelter thee?' [93:6]. You are the orphan pearl, the like of whom is no other. How can a mortal reach the forefront of the Real's acceptance such that He puts up with his disdain? By thy life! [15:72]. How can a mortal be worthy for the grasp of the attributes to explain the polish of his heart's mirror by virtue of solicitude? Did We not expand for thee thy breast? [94:1]. How can a mortal be such that the auditor of the beginningless and endless register turns over the acceptance and rejection of the creatures to his threshold? Whatever the Messenger gives you, take; whatever he prohibits you, forgo [59:7]. O Muhammad! You are something dif- ferent, and your work is different! " You are a tongue other than the speech of every mouth, you are a soul other than the gentleness of anyone else. You are a thought other than in anyone's mind. How can they reach you? You are indeed another world. It has been said that in friendship are both separation and union. In the era of the Beginningless, when love was apportioned, the wail of separation's pain rose up from the house of Abū Jahl, and the glitter of union's sun shone from the chamber of MuḤammad the Arab. From that separation was created a hell in the heart of the estranged, and from this union was affirmed a paradise in the breast of the friends. After the sun of union shone on that paragon, the world's folk were bewildered in his work. The wish for his beauty and for following him rose up in the prophets. Moses the Speaking Com- panion said, " Lord God, make me one of his community! " Jesus the Spirit of God said, " Lord God, make me the door-keeper of his threshold! " [Abraham] the Bosom Friend said, " Lord God, make my mention flow on the tongue of his community! " More wonderful than all this is that the paragon himself became bewildered in the steps of his own path.
