7:22 Al-A'raaf (The Heights)

{ فَدَلَّاهُمَا } أي: نزَّلهما عن رتبتهما العالية، التي هي البعد عن الذنوب والمعاصي إلى التلوث بأوضارها، فأقدما على أكلها. { فَلَمَّا ذَاقَا الشَّجَرَةَ بَدَتْ لَهُمَا سَوْآتُهُمَا } أي: ظهرت عورة كل منهما بعد ما كانت مستورة، فصار للعري الباطن من التقوى في هذه الحال أثر في اللباس الظاهر، حتى انخلع فظهرت عوراتهما، ولما ظهرت عوراتهما خَجِلا وجَعَلا يخصفان على عوراتهما من أوراق شجر الجنة، ليستترا بذلك. { وَنَادَاهُمَا رَبُّهُمَا } وهما بتلك الحال موبخا ومعاتبا: { أَلَمْ أَنْهَكُمَا عَنْ تِلْكُمَا الشَّجَرَةِ وَأَقُلْ لَكُمَا إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ لَكُمَا عَدُوٌّ مُبِينٌ } فلم اقترفتما المنهي، وأطعتما عدوَّكُما؟

قال سعيد بن أبي عروبة عن قتادة عن الحسن عن أبي بن كعب رضي الله عنه قال: كان آدم رجلا طوالا كأنه نخلة سحوق كثير شعر الرأس فلما وقع فيما وقع فيه من الخطيئة بدت له عورته عند ذلك وكان لا يراها فانطلق هاربا في الجنة فتعلقت برأسه شجرة من شجر الجنة فقال لها أرسليني فقالت: إني غير مرسلتك فناداه ربه عز وجل يا آدم أمني تفر قال يا رب إني أستحيتك. وقد رواه ابن جرير وابن مردوية من طرق عن الحسن عن أبي بن كعب عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم مرفوعا والموقوف أصح إسنادا وقال عبد الرزاق: أنبأنا سفيان بن عيينة وابن المبارك أنبأنا الحسن بن عمارة عن المنهال بن عمرو عن سعيد بن جبير عن ابن عباس قال كانت الشجرة التي نهى الله عنها آدم وزوجته السنبلة فلما أكلا منها بدت لهما سوآتهما وكان الذي وارى عنهما من سوآتهما أظفارهما "وطفقا يخصفان عليهما من ورق الجنة" ورق التين يلزقان بعضه إلى بعض فانطلق آدم عليه السلام موليا في الجنة فعلقت برأسه شجرة من الجنة فناداه الله يا آدم أمني تفر؟ قال لا ولكني استحيتك يا رب قال: أما كان لك فيما منحتك من الجنة وأبحتك منها مندوحة عما حرمت عليك قال: بلى رب ولكن وعزتك ما حسبت أن أحدا يحلف بك كاذبا قال وهو قول الله عز وجل "وقاسمهما إني لكما لمن الناصحين". قال فبعزتي لأهبطنك إلى الأرض ثم لا تنال العيش إلا كدا قال فأهبط من الجنة وكانا يأكلان منها رغدا فأهبط إلى غير رغد من طعام وشراب فعلم صنعه الحديد وأمر بالحرث فحرث وزرع ثم سقى حتى إذا بلغ حصد ثم داسه ثم ذراه ثم طحنه ثم عجنه ثم خبزه ثم أكله فلم يبلغه حتى بلغ منه ما شاء الله أن يبلغ. وقال الثوري عن ابن أبي ليلى عن المنهال بن عمرو عن سعيد بن جبير عن ابن عباس "وطفقا يخصفان عليهما من ورق الجنة" قال ورق التين صحيح إليه وقال مجاهد جعلا يخصفان عليهما من ورق الجنة قال كهيئة الثوب وقال وهب بن منبه في قوله ينزع عنهما لباسهما قال كان لباس آدم وحواء نورا على فروجهما لا يرى هذا عورة هذه ولا هذه عورة هذا فلما أكلا من الشجرة بدت لهما سوآتهما. رواه ابن جرير بسند صحيح إليه وقال عبد الرزاق أخبرنا معمر عن قتادة قال: قال آدم أي رب أرأيت إن تبت واستغفرت قال: إذا أدخلك الجنة وأما إبليس فلم يسأله التوبة وسأله النظرة فأعطى كل واحد منهما الذي سأله وقال ابن جرير حدثنا القاسم حدثنا الحسين حدثنا عباد بن العوام عن سفيان بن حسين عن يعلى بن مسلم عن سعيد بن جبير عن ابن عباس قال لما أكل آدم من الشجرة قيل له لم أكلت من الشجرة التي نهيتك عنها قال: حواء أمرتني قال: فإني قد أعقبتها أن لا تحمل إلا كرها ولا تضع إلا كرها قال فرنت عند ذلك حواء فقيل لها الرنة عليك وعلى ولدك.

وَطَفِقَا يَخْصِفَانِ عَلَيْهِمَا مِن وَرَقِ الْجَنَّةِ

(And they began to cover themselves with the leaves of Paradise.) "Using fig leaves." This statement has an authentic chain of narration leading to Ibn `Abbas. Mujahid said that they began to cover themselves with the leaves of Paradise, "Making them as a dress (or garment)." Commenting on Allah's statement,

يَنزِعُ عَنْهُمَا لِبَاسَهُمَا

(Stripping them of their raiment) 7:27 Wahb bin Munabbih said, "The private parts of Adam and Hawwa' had a light covering them which prevented them from seeing the private parts of each other. When they ate from the tree, their private parts appeared to them." Ibn Jarir reported this statement with an authentic chain of narration. Abdur-Razzaq reported from Qatadah, "Adam said, `O Lord! What if I repented and sought forgiveness' Allah said, `Then, I will admit you into Paradise.' As for Shaytan, he did not ask for forgiveness, but for respite. Each one of them was given what he asked for." Ad-Dahhak bin Muzahim commented,

رَبَّنَا ظَلَمْنَآ أَنفُسَنَا وَإِن لَّمْ تَغْفِرْ لَنَا وَتَرْحَمْنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْخَـسِرِينَ

("Our Lord! We have wronged ourselves. If You forgive us not, and bestow not upon us Your mercy, we shall certainly be of the losers.") "These are the words that Adam received from his Lord."

Thus did he lead them on thus did he debase them in their status by delusion on his part; and when they tasted of the tree that is when they ate of it their shameful parts were manifested to them that is the front private part of each was revealed to the other as well as their behinds — each of these parts is called saw’a ‘shameful’ because its exposure ‘shames’ yasū’u that person — and they began to piece together they began to stick onto themselves some of the leaves of the Garden to cover themselves up therewith. And their Lord called them ‘Did I not prohibit you from this tree and say to you “Verily Satan is a manifest enemy to you”?’ one whose enmity is evident? the interrogative is meant as an affirmative.

And when they tasted the tree, their shameful parts were shown to them. Anyone who follows in the tracks of the soul's appetite in opposition to the Real's command will be held back from the Real and not reach the appetite. Adam the chosen had not savored more than a taste from that prohibited tree when the whip of rebuke came down on his head and his state was changed. He did not completely satisfy the appetite, nor did God's approval remain with him. When he looked again, he did not see the crown on his head, nor the robe on his body. At first he had seen himself sitting on the throne of chosenness, leaning back on the cushion of vicegerency, adorned with the robes and trinkets of paradise. After this, he saw himself held back from all that, naked and hungry, in need of one leaf of a tree. God bless the chevaliers who set out early like kings and took their ease like the indigent! * Wonder not at my abasement-I am he with whose lifeblood time sported, then abased. The command came: “O Adam! You were not able to enjoy all those blessings without suffering and toil. Now go to the house of tribulation and adversity and work, plant seeds, take pains, and be patient.” Adam said, “All of this is trifling if one day I am again given access to this Threshold.” He lamented at the pain in his heart and placed his need and incapacity on the palms of remorse. He wept and said,
