7:163 Al-A'raaf (The Heights)

وَاسْأَلْهُمْ أي: اسأل بني إسرائيل عَنِ الْقَرْيَةِ الَّتِي كَانَتْ حَاضِرَةَ الْبَحْرِ أي: على ساحله في حال تعديهم وعقاب اللّه إياهم. إِذْ يَعْدُونَ فِي السَّبْتِ وكان اللّه تعالى قد أمرهم أن يعظموه ويحترموه ولا يصيدوا فيه صيدا، فابتلاهم اللّه وامتحنهم، فكانت الحيتان تأتيهم يَوْمَ سَبْتِهِمْ شُرَّعًا أي: كثيرة طافية على وجه البحر. وَيَوْمَ لا يَسْبِتُونَ أي: إذا ذهب يوم السبت لا تَأْتِيهِمْ أي: تذهب في البحر فلا يرون منها شيئا كَذَلِكَ نَبْلُوهُمْ بِمَا كَانُوا يَفْسُقُونَ ففسقهم هو الذي أوجب أن يبتليهم اللّه، وأن تكون لهم هذه المحنة، وإلا فلو لم يفسقوا، لعافاهم اللّه، ولما عرضهم للبلاء والشر، فتحيلوا على الصيد، فكانوا يحفرون لها حفرا، وينصبون لها الشباك، فإذا جاء يوم السبت ووقعت في تلك الحفر والشباك، لم يأخذوها في ذلك اليوم، فإذا جاء يوم الأحد أخذوها، وكثر فيهم ذلك، وانقسموا ثلاث فرق

هذا السياق هو بسط لقوله تعالى "ولقد علمتم الذين اعتدوا منكم في السبت" الآية. يقول تعالى لنبيه صلوات الله وسلامه عليه "واسألهم" أي واسأل هؤلاء اليهود الذين بحضرتك عن قصة أصحابهم الذين خالفوا أمر الله ففاجأتهم نقمته على صنيعهم واعتدائهم واحتيالهم في المخالفة وحذر هؤلاء من كتمان صفتك التي يجدونها في كتبهم لئلا يحل بهم ما حل بإخوانهم وسلفهم وهذه القرية هي أيلة وهي على شاطئ بحر القلزم قال محمد بن إسحاق عن داود بن الحصين عن عكرمة عن ابن عباس في قوله تعالى "واسألهم عن القرية التي كانت حاضرة البحر" قال هي قرية يقال لها أيلة بين مدين والطور وكذا قال عكرمة ومجاهد وقتادة والسدي وقال عبدالله بن كثير القارئ سمعنا أنها أيلة وقيل هي مدين وهو رواية عن ابن عباس وقال ابن زيد هي قرية يقال لها معتا بين مدين وعينونا وقوله "إذ يعدون في السبت" أي يعتدون فيه ومخالفون أمر الله فيه لهم بالوصاة به إذ ذاك "إذ تأتيهم حيتانهم يوم سبتهم شرعا" قال الضحاك عن ابن عباس أي ظاهرة على الماء وقال العوفي عن ابن عباس ظاهرة من كل مكان قال ابن جرير وقوله "ويوم لا يسبتون لا تأتيهم كذلك نبلوهم" أي نختبرهم بإظهار السمك لهم على ظهر الماء في اليوم المحرم عليهم صيده وإخفائها عنهم في اليوم الحلال لهم صيده "كذلك نبلوهم" نختبرهم "بما كانوا يفسقون" يقول بفسقهم عن طاعة الله وخروجهم عنها وهؤلاء قوم احتالوا على انتهاك محارم الله بما تعاطوا من الأسباب الظاهرة التي معناها في الباطن تعاطي الحرام وقد قال الفقيه الإمام أبو عبدالله بن بطة رحمه الله حدثنا أحمد بن محمد بن سلم حدثنا الحسن بن محمد بن الصباح الزعفراني حدثنا يزيد بن هارون حدثنا محمد بن عمرو عن أبي سلمة عن أبي هريرة أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال "لا ترتكبوا ما ارتكبت اليهود فتستحلوا محارم الله بأدنى الحيل" وهذا إسناد جيد فإن أحمد بن محمد بن سلم هذا ذكره الخطيب في تاريخه ووثقه وباقي رجاله مشهورون ثقات ويصحح الترمذي بمثل هذا الإسناد كثيرا.

The Jews transgress the Sanctity of the Sabbath

This Ayah explains Allah's statement,

وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمُ الَّذِينَ اعْتَدَواْ مِنكُمْ فِى السَّبْتِ

(And indeed you knew those among you who transgressed in the matter of the Sabbath..) 2:65 Allah says to His Prophet here,

وَسْئَلْهُمْ

(And ask them) ask the Jews who are with you, about the story of their fellow Jews who defied Allah's command, so that His punishment overtook them all of a sudden for their evil actions, transgression and defiance by way of deceit. Also, warn the Jews (O Muhammad) against hiding your description that they find in their books, so that they do not suffer what their forefathers suffered. The village mentioned here is Aylah, on the shore of the Qulzum (Red) Sea. Muhammad bin Ishaq recorded from Dawud bin Al-Husayn from `Ikrimah that Ibn `Abbas commented on Allah's statement,

وَسْئَلْهُمْ عَنِ الْقَرْيَةِ الَّتِى كَانَتْ حَاضِرَةَ الْبَحْرِ

(And ask them about the town that was by the sea...) "A village called Aylah between Madyan and At-Tur (which is in Sinai). `Ikrimah, Mujahid, Qatadah and As-Suddi said similarly. Allah's statement,

إِذْ يَعْدُونَ فِى السَّبْتِ

(when they transgressed in the matter of the Sabbath;) means, they transgressed in the Sabbath and defied Allah's command to them to keep it sanctified,

إِذْ تَأْتِيهِمْ حِيتَانُهُمْ يَوْمَ سَبْتِهِمْ شُرَّعًا

(when their fish came to them openly on the Sabbath day,) visible on top of the water, according to Ad-Dahhak who reported it from Ibn `Abbas. Ibn Jarir said, "Allah's statement,

وَيَوْمَ لاَ يَسْبِتُونَ لاَ تَأْتِيهِمْ كَذَلِكَ نَبْلُوهُم

(and did not come to them on the day they had no Sabbath. Thus We made a trial of them,) means, this is how We tested them by making the fish swim close to the surface of the water , on the day which they were prohibited to fish. The fish would be hidden from them on the day when they were allowed to fish,

كَذَلِكَ نَبْلُوهُم

(Thus We made a trial for them,) so that We test them,

بِمَا كَانُواْ يَفْسُقُونَ

(for they used to rebel against Allah's command) by defying His obedience and rebelling against it." Therefore, these were a people who used a trick to violate Allah's prohibitions, taking an action that seemed legal on the surface. However, in reality, this action was meant to transgress the prohibition. Imam and scholar Abu `Abdullah Ibn Battah reported that Abu Hurayrah said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,

«لَا تَرْتَكِبوُا مَا ارْتَكَبَتِ الْيَهُودُ فَتَسْتَحِلُّوا مَحَارِمَ اللهِ بِأَدْنَى الْحِيَل»

(Do not repeat what the Jews committed, and violate Allah's prohibitions using deceitful tricks.) This Hadith has a reasonable chain.

And question them O Muhammad (s) in rebuke about the city that was by the sea bordering the Red Sea bahr al-qulzum and this was Eilat about what befell its inhabitants how they would transgress violate the Sabbath by fishing which they had been commanded not to do on that day; how idh is an adverbial qualifier of ya‘dūn ‘they would transgress’ their fish would come to them on the day of their Sabbath floating at the surface visible at the surface of the water; but on the day they did not observe the Sabbath when they would not consecrate the Sabbath over the other days they would not come to them as a trial from God. Thus were We trying them for their wickedness. And when they went to fish the city split into three one third joined the fishing party another prohibited them while a third abstained from both fishing and prohibiting.

The Holy Prophet ﷺ has been asked to warn the Israelites present in his time by reminding them the events related in these verses. The events referred to in these verses are clear and require no explanation.
