6:125 Al-An'aam (The Cattle)

يقول تعالى -مبينا لعباده علامة سعادة العبد وهدايته، وعلامة شقاوته وضلاله-: إن من انشرح صدره للإسلام، أي: اتسع وانفسح، فاستنار بنور الإيمان، وحيي بضوء اليقين، فاطمأنت بذلك نفسه، وأحب الخير، وطوعت له نفسه فعله، متلذذا به غير مستثقل، فإن هذا علامة على أن الله قد هداه، ومَنَّ عليه بالتوفيق، وسلوك أقوم الطريق. وأن علامة من يرد الله أن يضله، أن يجعل صدره ضيقا حرجا. أي: في غاية الضيق عن الإيمان والعلم واليقين، قد انغمس قلبه في الشبهات والشهوات، فلا يصل إليه خير، لا ينشرح قلبه لفعل الخير كأنه من ضيقه وشدته يكاد يصعد في السماء، أي: كأنه يكلف الصعود إلى السماء، الذي لا حيلة له فيه. وهذا سببه، عدم إيمانهم، هو الذي أوجب أن يجعل الله الرجس عليهم، لأنهم سدوا على أنفسهم باب الرحمة والإحسان، وهذا ميزان لا يعول، وطريق لا يتغير، فإن من أعطى واتقى، وصدق بالحسنى، يسره الله لليسرى، ومن بخل واستغنى وكذب بالحسنى، فسييسره للعسرى.

يقول تعالى: فمن يرد الله أن يهديه يشرح صدره للإسلام أي ييسره له وينشطه ويسهله لذلك فهذه علامات على الخير كقوله تعالى "أفمن شرح الله صدره للإسلام فهو على نور من ربه" الآية وقال تعالى "ولكن الله حبب إليكم الإيمان وزينه في قلوبكم وكره إليكم الكفر والفسوق والعصيان أولئك هم الراشدون" وقال ابن عباس في قوله "فمن يرد الله أن يهديه يشرح صدره للإسلام" يقول تعالى يوسع قلبه للتوحيد والإيمان به وكذا قال أبو مالك وغير واحد وهو ظاهر. وقال عبد الرزاق أخبرنا الثوري عن عمرو بن قيس عن عمرو بن مرة عن أبي جعفر قال: سئل رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم أي المؤمنين أكيس؟ قال "أكثرهم ذكرا للموت وأكثرهم لما بعده استعدادا" قال: وسئل النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم عن هذه الآية "فمن يرد الله أن يهديه يشرح صدره للإسلام" قالوا: كيف يشرح صدره يا رسول الله؟ قال نور يقذف فيه فينشرح له وينفسح قالوا: فهل لذلك من أمارة يعرف بها؟ قال الإنابة إلى دار الخلود والتجافي عن دار الغرور والاستعداد للموت قبل لقاء الموت وقال ابن جرير: حدثنا هناد حدثنا قبيصة عن سفيان يعني الثوري عن عمرو بن مرة عن رجل يكنى أبا جعفر كان يسكن المدائن قال: سئل النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم عن قول الله تعالى "فمن يرد الله أن يهديه يشرح صدره للإسلام" فذكر نحو ما تقدم. وقال ابن أبي حاتم: حدثنا أبو سعيد الأشج حدثنا ابن إدريس عن الحسن بن الفرات القزاز عن عمرو بن مرة عن أبي جعفر قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم "فمن يرد الله أن يهديه يشرح صدره للإسلام" قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم إذا دخل الإيمان القلب انفسح له القلب وانشرح قالوا: يا رسول الله هل لذلك من أمارة؟ قال نعم الإنابة إلى دار الخلود والتجافي عن دار الغرور والاستعداد للموت قبل الموت وقد رواه ابن جرير عن سوار بن عبد الله العنبري حدثنا المعتمر بن سليمان سمعت أبي يحدث عن عبد الله بن مرة عن أبي جعفر فذكره. وقال ابن أبي حاتم: حدثنا أبو سعيد الأشج حدثنا أبو خالد الأحمر عن عمرو بن قيس عن عمرو بن مرة عن عبد الله بن مسعود قال: تلا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم هذه الآية "فمن يرد الله أن يهديه يشرح صدره للإسلام" قالوا: يا رسول الله ما هذا الشرح؟ قال نور يقذف في القلب قالوا: يا رسول الله فهل لذلك من أمارة تعرف؟ قال نعم قالوا: وما هي؟ قال: الإنابة إلى دار الخلود والتجافي عن دار الغرور والاستعداد للموت قبل الموت. وقال ابن جرير أيضا: حدثني هلال بن العلاء حدثنا سعيد بن عبد الملك بن وافد حدثنا محمد بن مسلم عن أبي عبد الرحمن عن زيد بن أبي أنيسة عن عمرو بن مرة عن أبي عبيدة بن عبد الله بن مسعود قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم إذا دخل النور القلب انفسح وانشرح قالوا: فهل لذلك من علامة يعرف بها؟ قال الإنابة إلى دار الخلود والتنحي عن دار الغرور والاستعداد للموت قبل لقاء الموت وقد رواه من وجه آخر عن ابن مسعود متصلا مرفوعا فقال: حدثني ابن سنان القزاز حدثنا محبوب بن الحسن الهاشمي عن يونس عن عبد الرحمن بن عبيد بن عتبة عن عبد الله بن مسعود عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال "فمن يرد الله أن يهديه يشرح صدره للإسلام" قالوا: يا رسول الله وكيف يشرح صدره؟ قال يدخل فيه النور فينفسح قالوا: وهل لذلك علامة يا رسول الله؟ قال التجافي عن دار الغرور والإنابة إلى دار الخلود والاستعداد للموت قبل أن ينزل الموت فهذه طرق لهذا الحديث مرسلة ومتصلة يشد بعضها بعضا والله أعلم. وقوله تعالى "ومن يرد أن يضله يجعل صدره ضيقا حرجا" قرئ بفتح الضاد وتسكين الياء والأكثرون ضيقا بتشديد الياء وكسرها وهما لغتان كهين وهين وقرأ بعضهم حرجا بفتح الحاء وكسر الراء قيل بمعنى أثم قاله السدي. وقيل بمعنى القراءة الأخرى حرجا بفتح الحاء والراء وهو الذي لا يتسع لشيء من الهدى ولا يخلص إليه شيء ما ينفعه من الإيمان ولا ينفذ فيه وقد سأل عمر بن الخطاب رضي الله عنه رجلا من الأعراب من أهل البادية من مدلج عن الحرجة فقال هي الشجرة تكون بين الأشجار لا تصل إليها راعية ولا وحشية ولا شيء فقال عمر رضي الله عنه: كذلك قلب المنافق لا يصل إليه شيء من الخير. وقال العوفي عن ابن عباس يجعل الله عليه الإسلام ضيقا والإسلام واسع وذلك حين يقول "ما جعل عليكم في الدين من حرج" يقول ما جعل عليكم في الإسلام من ضيق وقال مجاهد والسدي: ضيقا حرجا شاكا. وقال عطاء الخراساني ضيقا حرجا أي ليس للخير فيه منفذ وقال ابن المبارك عن ابن جريج ضيقا حرجا بلا إله إلا الله حتى يستطيع أن تدخل قلبه كأنما يصعد في السماء من شدة ذلك عليه. وقال سعيد بن جبير يجعل صدره ضيقا حرجا قال: لا يجد فيه مسلكا إلا صعدا وقال السدي "كأنما يصعد في السماء" من ضيق صدره. وقال عطاء الخراساني "كأنما يصعد فى السماء" يقول مثله كمثل الذي لا يستطيع أن يصعد إلى السماء. وقال الحكم بن أبان عن عكرمة عن ابن عباس "كأنما يصعد في السماء" يقول فكما لا يستطيع ابن آدم أن يبلغ السماء فكذلك لا يستطيع أن يدخل التوحيد والإيمان قلبه حتى يدخله الله في قلبه وقال الأوزاعي "كأنما يصعد في السماء" كيف يستطيع من جعل الله صدره ضيقا أن يكون مسلما. وقال الإمام أبو جعفر بن جرير: وهذا مثل ضربه الله لقلب هذا الكافر في شدة ضيقه عن وصول الإيمان إليه يقول فمثله في امتناعه من قبول الإيمان وضيقه عن وصوله إليه مثل امتناعه عن الصعود إلى السماء وعجزه عنه لأنه ليس في وسعه وطاقته وقال في قوله "كذلك يجعل الله الرجس على الذين لا يؤمنون" يقول كما يجعل الله صدر من أراد إضلاله ضيقا حرجا كذلك يسلط الله الشيطان عليه وعلى أمثاله ممن أبى الإيمان بالله ورسوله فيغويه ويصده عن سبيل الله وقال ابن أبي طلحة عن ابن عباس: الرجس الشيطان وقال مجاهد: الرجس كل ما لا خير فيه وقال عبد الرحمن بن زيد بن أسلم الرجس العذاب.

فَمَن يُرِدِ اللَّهُ أَن يَهْدِيَهُ يَشْرَحْ صَدْرَهُ لِلإِسْلَـمِ

(And whomsoever Allah wills to guide, He opens his breast to Islam;) He makes Islam easy for him and strengthens his resolve to embrace it, and these are good signs. Allah said in other Ayat,

أَفَمَن شَرَحَ اللَّهُ صَدْرَهُ لِلإِسْلَـمِ فَهُوَ عَلَى نُورٍ مِّن رَّبِّهِ

(Is he whose breast Allah has opened to Islam, so that he is in light from His Lord (as he who is a non-Muslim)) 39:22 and,

وَلَـكِنَّ اللَّهَ حَبَّبَ إِلَيْكُمُ الايمَـنَ وَزَيَّنَهُ فِى قُلُوبِكُمْ وَكَرَّهَ إِلَيْكُمُ الْكُفْرَ وَالْفُسُوقَ وَالْعِصْيَانَ أُوْلَـئِكَ هُمُ الرَشِدُونَ

(But Allah has endeared the faith to you and has beautified it in your hearts, and has made disbelief, wickedness and disobedience hated by you. Such are they who are the rightly guided.) 49:7 Ibn `Abbas commented on Allah's statement,

فَمَن يُرِدِ اللَّهُ أَن يَهْدِيَهُ يَشْرَحْ صَدْرَهُ لِلإِسْلَـمِ

(And whomsoever Allah wills to guide, He opens his breast to Islam;), "Allah says that He will open his heart to Tawhid and faith in Him." This is the same as was reported from Abu Malik and several others, and it is sound. Allah's statement,

وَمَن يُرِدْ أَن يُضِلَّهُ يَجْعَلْ صَدْرَهُ ضَيِّقاً حَرَجاً

(and whomsoever He wills to send astray, He makes his breast closed and constricted,) refers to inability to accept guidance, thus being deprived of beneficial faith.

كَأَنَّمَا يَصَّعَّدُ فِى السَّمَآءِ

(. ..as if he is climbing up to the sky.) because of the heaviness of faith on him. Sa`id bin Jubayr commented that in this case, "(Islam) finds every path in his heart impassable." Al-Hakam bin Aban said that `Ikrimah narrated from Ibn `Abbas that he commented on:

كَأَنَّمَا يَصَّعَّدُ فِى السَّمَآءِ

(...as if he is climbing up to the sky), "Just as the Son of Adam cannot climb up to the sky, Tawhid and faith will not be able to enter his heart, until Allah decides to allow it into his heart." Imam Abu Ja`far bin Jarir commented: "This is a parable that Allah has given for the heart of the disbeliever, which is completely impassable and closed to faith. Allah says, the example of the disbeliever's inability to accept faith in his heart and that it is too small to accommodate it, is the example of his inability to climb up to the sky, which is beyond his capability and power." He also commented on Allah's statement,

كَذَلِكَ يَجْعَلُ اللَّهُ الرِّجْسَ عَلَى الَّذِينَ لاَ يُؤْمِنُونَ

(Thus Allah puts the Rijs (wrath) on those who believe not.) "Allah says that just as He makes the heart of whomever He decides to misguide, closed and constricted, He also appoints Shaytan for him and for his likes, those who refused to believe in Allah and His Messenger. Consequently, Shaytan lures and hinders them from the path of Allah." `Ali bin Abi Talhah reported that Ibn `Abbas said that, Rijs, refers to Shaytan, while Mujahid said that it refers to all that does not contain goodness. `Abdur-Rahman bin Zayd bin Aslam said that, Rijs, means, `torment'.

Whomever God desires to guide He expands his breast to Islam by casting into his heart a light which it the heart expands for and accepts as reported in a hadīth; and whomever He God desires to send astray He makes his breast narrow read dayqan or dayyiqan unable to accept it and constricted extremely tight read harijan ‘constricted’ as an adjective or harajan as a verbal noun by which it the heart of the misguided one is described hyperbolically as if he were engaged in ascent yassa‘‘ad is also read as yassā‘ad in both forms the original tā’ has been assimilated with the sād; a third variant reading has yas‘ad to the heaven when he is charged with the obligations of the faith because of the hardship for him therein. So like this making of the breast narrow God casts ignominy chastisement or He casts Satan that is He gives him authority over those who do not believe.

Signs of 'Sharh al-Sadr in Din

Some signs of the Divinely-guided, and the firm on error, have been given in the third verse (125). Said there was: فَمَن يُرِ‌دِ اللَّـهُ أَن يَهْدِيَهُ يَشْرَ‌حْ صَدْرَ‌هُ لِلْإِسْلَامِ (So, whom Allah wills to give guidance, He opens his heart for Islam).

Hakim in al-Mustadrak and Baihaqi in Shu'ab al-'Iman report from Sayyidna ` Abdullah ibn Masud ؓ : When this verse was revealed, the Companions of the Holy Prophet ﷺ requested him to explain the meaning of Sharh al-Sadr, the opening of the heart for Islam. He said: ` Allah Ta` ala puts a light in the heart of a believer through which his heart opens up for the perception, understanding and acceptance of truth. The Sahabah submitted: ` Is there a sign which will help recognize the person who has such Sharh al-Sadr? He said: ` Yes! The sign is that 'Akhirah and its blessings become the object of all his desires. He avoids uncalled-for desires and fleeting enjoyments and starts getting ready for death before it comes.'

After that, he said: " وَمَن يُرِ‌دْ أَن يُضِلَّهُ يَجْعَلْ صَدْرَ‌هُ ضَيِّقًا حَرَ‌جًا كَأَنَّمَا يَصَّعَّدُ فِي السَّمَاءِ " (and whom He wills to let go astray, He makes his heart narrow, much too narrow [ wherefore, for him to accept the truth and to act in accordance with it becomes as difficult ], as though he climbs up to the sky).

Kalabi has said: ` the narrowing of his heart means that no passage for the entry of truth and good remains open there.' A similar explanation has also been reported from Sayyidna Faruq al-A'zam ؓ and Sayyidna ` Abdullah ibn ` Abbas ؓ has said: ` When he hears the ذِکر Dhikr of Allah, he feels being harassed and when he listens to what is Kufr and Shirk, his heart relishes it.

The Noble Sahabah: Ever-Eager Receivers of Truth

This was the reason why the noble Sababah, may Allah be pleased with all of them, who were chosen by Allah Ta` ala to be His Prophet's companions in faith, and to be the learners and carriers of his teachings as his direct disciples. They were so convinced as his adherents that their doubts about Islamic injunctions, if any, remained negligibly low. During their whole lifetime, the number of questions presented before the Holy Prophet ﷺ by them are but a counted few. The reason was that by the grace of the company of the Holy Prophet ﷺ their hearts were almost engraved with love and reverence for Allah Ta` ala and because of which they were blessed with the high station of Sharh al-Sadr, a heart open to the acceptance of truth. In fact, their hearts had become in themselves the very standard of truth and falsehood. They would accept truth promptly and falsehood could not find entry into their hearts. After that, as the distance from the blessed period of the Holy Prophet ﷺ increased, doubts and scruples started finding room for infilteration and that was the be-ginning of dogmatic differences.

To Remove Doubts : Open Hearts, Narrow Debates

In our day, the world is a stage infested with doubts. People seek solutions through debates, arguments and counter-arguments and end up with confusion worse confounded. This is not a sound way to handle doubts as pointed out by the unique Indian poet, Akbar Ilahabadi:

فلسفی کو بحث کے اندر خدا ملتا نہیں ڈور کو سلجھا رہا ہے پرسرا ملتا نہیں

The philosopher deep in debate cannot find God

He is untangling the string but cannot find where to begin!

There is only one way out, that which was taken by the blessed Companions ؓ and by the early righteous elders: Think of the perfect power of Allah Ta` ala and imagine His blessings and feel the presence of His love and reverence, the doubts evaporate automatically. This is the reason why the Qur'an has itself prompted the Holy Prophet ﷺ to make the following Du` a (prayer):

رَبِّ اشرَح لِی صَدرِی

Rabbishralh li sadri

0 my Rabb, open my heart.

At the end of the verse it was said: كَذَٰلِكَ يَجْعَلُ اللَّـهُ الرِّ‌جْسَ عَلَى الَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ which means that this is how Allah brings damnation and disgrace upon those who do not believe. For truth, their hearts are not open while to every evil they dash.

Whomsoever God desires to guide, He expands his breast to the submission. The mark of this expansion is that at three moments He throws three lights into the heart of the servant: the light of intellect at the beginning, the light of learning in the middle, and the light of recognition at the end. Then, with the sum total of these lights, all his difficulties are solved and he begins to see something of the Unseen. MuṣṬafā said, “Be wary of the perspicacity of the man of faith, for he gazes with the light of God.” With the light of the beginning he knows his own defects, with the light of the middle he rec- ognizes his own loss, and with the light of the end he perceives his own nonbeing. With the light of the beginning he escapes from associationism, with the light of the middle he escapes from op- position, and with the light of the end he escapes from himself. Disown yourself, for what harms you is you. Don't talk about stars, for your heaven is you.
