5:87 Al-Maaida (The Table)

يقول تعالى { يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تُحَرِّمُوا طَيِّبَاتِ مَا أَحَلَّ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ } من المطاعم والمشارب، فإنها نعم أنعم الله بها عليكم، فاحمدوه إذ أحلها لكم، واشكروه ولا تردوا نعمته بكفرها أو عدم قبولها، أو اعتقاد تحريمها، فتجمعون بذلك بين القول على الله الكذب، وكفر النعمة، واعتقاد الحلال الطيب حراما خبيثا، فإن هذا من الاعتداء. والله قد نهى عن الاعتداء فقال: { وَلَا تَعْتَدُوا إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمُعْتَدِينَ } بل يبغضهم ويمقتهم ويعاقبهم على ذلك.

قال علي بن أبي طلحة عن ابن عباس نزلت هذه الآية في رهط من أصحاب النبي صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم قالوا نقطع مذاكيرنا وترك شهوات الدنيا ونسيح في الأرض كما يفعل الرهبان فبلغ ذلك النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فأرسل إليهم فذكر لهم ذلك فقالوا نعم فقال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم:" لكني أصوم وأفطر وأصلى وأنام وأنكح النساء فمن أخذ بسنتي فهو مني ومن لم يأخذ بسنتي فليس مني" رواه ابن أبي حاتم وروى ابن مردويه من طريق العوفي عن ابن عباس نحو ذلك وفي الصحيحين عن عائشة رضي الله عنها أن ناسا من أصحاب رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم سألوا أزواج النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم عن عمله في الدنيا فقال بعضهم لا آكل اللحم وقال بعضهم لا أتزوج النساء وقال بعضهم لا أنام على فراش فبلغ ذلك النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فقال:" ما بال أقوام يقول أحدهم كذا وكذا لكني أصوم وأفطر وأنام وأقوم وآكل اللحم وأتزوج النساء فمن رغب عن سنتي فليس مني" وقال ابن أبي حاتم حدثنا أحمد بن عصام الأنصاري حدثنا أبو عاصم الضحاك بن مخلد عن عثمان يعني أبا سعد أخبرني عكرمة عن ابن عباس أن رجلا أتى النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فقال: يا رسول الله إني إذا أكلت من هذا اللحم انتشرت إلى النساء وإنى حرمت علي اللحم فنزلت" يا أيها الذين آمنوا لا تحرموا طيبات ما احل الله لكم" وكذا رواه الترمذي وابن جرير جميعا عن عمرو بن علي الفلاس عن أبي عاصم النبيل به وقال حسن غريب وقد روي من وجه آخر مرسلا وروي موقوفا على ابن عباس فالله أعلم وقال سفيان الثوري ووكيع عن إسماعيل بن أبي خالد عن قيس بن أبي حازم عن عبد الله بن مسعود قال: كنا نغزو مع النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وليس معنا نساء فقلنا ألا نستخصي فنهانا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم عن ذلك لرخص لنا أن ننكح المرأة بالثوب إلى أجل ثم قرأ عبد الله" يا أيها الذين آمنوا لا تحرموا طيبات ما أحل الله لكم" الآية أخرجاه من حديث إسماعيل وهذا كان قبل تحريم نكاح المتعة والله أعلم وقال الأعمش عن إبراهيم عن همام بن الحارث عن عمرو بن شرحبيل قال جاء معقل بن مقرن إلى عبد الله بن مسعود فقال إني حرمت فراشي فتلا هذه الآية" يا أيها الذين آمنوا لا تحرموا طيبات ما أحل الله لكم" الآية وقال الثوري عن منصور عن أبي الضحى عن مسروق قال كنا عند عبد الله بن مسعود فجيء بضرع فتنحى رجل فقال له عبد الملك ادنُ فقال إني حرمت أن آكله فقال عبد الله ادنُ فاطعم وكفر عن يمينك وتلا هذه الآية" يا أيها الذين آمنوا لا تحرموا طيبات ما أحل الله لكم" الآية رواهن ابن أبي حاتم وروى الحاكم هذا الأثر الأخير في مستدركه من طريق إسحاق بن راهويه عن جرير عن منصور به ثم قال على شرط الشيخين ولم يخرجاه ثم قال ابن أبي حاتم حدثنا يونس بن عبد الأعلى حدثنا ابن وهب أخبرني هشام بن سعد أن زيد بن أسلم حدثه أن عبد الله بن رواحة أضافه ضيف من أهله وهو عند النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم ثم رجع إلى أهله فوجدهم لم يطعموا ضيفهم انتظارا له فقال لامرأته حبست ضيفي من أجلي هو علي حرام فقالت امرأته هو علي حرام وقال الضيف هو علي حرام فلما رأى ذلك وضع يده وقال كلوا بسم الله ثم ذهب إلى النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فذكر الذي كان منهم ثم أنزل الله" يا أيها الذين آمنوا لا تحرموا طيبات ما أحل الله لكم" وهذا أثر منقطع. وفي صحيح البخاري في قصة الصديق مع أضيافه شبيه بهذا وفيه وفي هذه القصة دلالة لمن ذهب من العلماء كالشافعي وغيره إلى أن من حرم مأكلاأو ملبسا أو شيئا ما عدا النساء أنه لا يحرم عليه ولا كفارة عليه أيضا ولقوله تعالى" يا أيها الذين آمنوا لا تحرموا طيبات ما أحل الله لكم" ولأن الذي حرم اللحم على نفسه كما في الحديث المتقدم لم يأمره النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم بكفارة. وذهب آخرون منهم الإمام أحمد بن حنبل إلى أن من حرم مأكلا أو مشربا أو ملبسا أو شيئا من الأشياء فإنه يجب عليه بذلك كفارة يمين كما إذا التزم تركه باليمين فكذلك يؤاخذ بمجرد تحريمه على نفسه إلزاما له بما التزمه كما أفتى بذلك ابن عباس وكما في قوله تعالى" يا أيها النبي لم تحرم ما أحل الله لك تبتغي مرضات أزواجك والله غفور رحيم" ثم قال" قد فرض الله لكم تحلة أيمانكم" الآية وكذلك هاهنا لما ذكر هذا الحكم عقبه بالآية المبينة لتكفير اليمين فدل على أن هذا منزل منزلة اليمين في اقتضاء التكفير والله أعلم وقال ابن جرير حدثنا القاسم حدثنا الحسين حدثنا حجاج عن ابن جريج عن مجاهد قال: أراد رجال منهم عثمان بن مظعون وعبد الله بن عمرو أن يتبتلوا ويخصوا أنفسهم ويلبسوا المسوح فنزلت هذه الآية إلى قوله" واتقوا الله الذي أنتم به مؤمنون" قال ابن جريج عن عكرمة أن عمان بن مظعون وعلي بن أبي طالب وابن مسعود والمقداد بن الأسود وسالما مولى أبي حذيفة في أصحابه تبتلوا فجلسوا فى البيوت واعتزلوا النساء ولبسوا المسوح وحرموا طيبات الطعام واللباس إلا ما يأكل ويلبس أهل السياحة من بني إسرائيل وهموا بالاختصاء وأجمعوا لقيام الليل وصيام النهار فنزلت هذه الآية " يا أيها الذين آمنوا لا تحرموا طيبات ما أحل الله لكم ولا تعتدوا إن الله لا يحب المعتدين" يقول لا تسيروا بغير سنة المسلمين يريد ما حرموا من النساء والطعام واللباس وما أجمعوا له من قيام الليل وصيام النهار وما هموا به من الاختصاء فلما نزلت فيهم بعث اليهم رسول الله فقال" إن لأنفسكم حقا وإن لأعينكم حقا صوموا وأفطروا وصلوا وناموا فليس منا من ترك سنتنا" فقالوا: اللهم سلمنا واتبعنا بما أنزلت. وقد ذكر هذه القصة غير واحد من التابعين مرسلة ولها شاهد في الصحيحين من رواية عائشة أم المؤمنين كما تقدم ذلك ولله الحمد والمنة وقال أسباط عن السدي في قوله" يا أيها الذين آمنوا لا تحرموا طيبات ما أحل الله لكم ولا تعتدوا إن الله لا يحب المعتدين" وذلك أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم جلس يوما فذكر الناس ثم قام ولم يزدهم على التخفيف فقال ناس من أصحاب النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم كانوا عشرة منهم: علي بن أبي طالب وعثمان بن مظعون ما حقنا إن لم نحدث عملا فإن النصارى قد حرموا على أنفسهم فنحن نحرم فحرم بعضهم أن يأكل اللحم والودك وأن يأكل بالنهار وحرم بعضهم النوم وحرم بعضهم النساء فكان عثمان بن مظعون ممن حرم النساء فكان لا يدنو من أهلة ولا يدنون منه فأتت امرأته عائشة رضي الله عنها وكان يقال لها الحولاء فقالت لها عائشة ومن عندها أزواج النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم ما بالك يا حولاء متغيرة اللون لا تمتشطين ولا تتطيبين فقالت: وكيف أمتشط وأتطيب وما وقع عليّ زوجي وما رفع عني ثوبا منذ كذا وكذا قال فجعلن يضحكن من كلامها فدخل رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وهن يضحكن فقال ما يضحككن قالت: يا رسول الله إن الحولاء سألتها عن أمرها فقالت ما رفع عني زوجي ثوبا منذ كذا وكذا فأرسل اليه فدعاه فقال: مالك يا عثمان قال إنى تركته لله لكي أتخلى للعبادات وقص عليه أمره وكان عثمان قد أراد أن يجب نفسه فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم:" أقسمت عليك ألا رجعت فواقعت أهلك" فقال يا رسول الله إنى صائم فقال: أفطر قال فأفطر وأتى أهله فرجعت الحولاء إلى عائشة وقد امتشطت واغتسلت وتطيبت فضحكت عائشة وقالت: مالك يا حولاء فقالت إنه آتاها أمس وقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم:" ما بال أقوام حرموا النساء والطعام والنوم ألا إني أنام وأقوم وأفطر وأصوم وأنكح النساء فمن رغب عني فليس مني فنزلت" يا أيها الذين آمنوا لا تحرموا طيبات ما أحل الله لكم ولا تعتدوا" يقول لعثمان لا تجب نفسك فإن هذا هو الاعتداء وأمرهم أن يكفروا عن أيمانهم فقال" لا يؤاخذكم الله باللغو في أيمانكم ولكن يؤاخذكم بما عقدتم الأيمان" رواه ابن جرير وقوله تعالى" ولا تعتدوا" يحتمل أن يكون المراد منه ولا تبالغوا في التضييق على أنفسكم بتحريم المباحات عليكم كما قاله من قاله من السلف ويحتمل أن يكون المراد كما لا تحرموا الحلال فلا تعتدوا في تناول الحلال بل خذوا منه بقدر كفايتكم وحاجتكم ولا تجاوزوا الحد فيه كما قال تعالى" وكلوا واشربوا ولا تسرفوا" الآية وقال" والذين إذا أنفقوا لم يسرفوا ولم يقتروا وكان بين ذلك قواما" فشرع الله عدل بين الغالي فيه والجافي عنه لا إفراط ولاتفريط ولهذا قال" لا تحرموا طيبات ما أحل الله لكم ولا تعتدوا إن الله لا يحب المعتدين".

There is No Monasticism in Islam

`Ali bin Abi Talhah said that Ibn `Abbas said, "This Ayah 5:87 was revealed about some of the Companions of the Prophet who said, `We should cut off our male organs, abandon the desires of this life and travel in the land, just as the Ruhban (monks) do.' When the Prophet heard of this statement, he summoned them and asked them if they made this statement and they answered `Yes.' The Prophet said,

«لكِنِّي أَصُومُ وَأُفْطِرُ، وَأُصَلِّي، وَأَنَامُ، وَأَنْكِحُ النِّسَاءَ، فَمَنْ أَخَذَ بِسُنَّتِي فَهُوَ مِنِّي، وَمَنْ لَمْ يَأْخُذْ بِسُنَّتِي فَلَيْسَ مِنِّي»

(I fast and break my fast, pray and sleep, and marry women. Whoever follows my Sunnah is of me, and whoever abandons my Sunnah is not of me.)" Ibn Abi Hatim also collected this Hadith. Ibn Marduwyah recorded that Al-`Awfi said that Ibn `Abbas narrated a similar Hadith. It is recorded in the Two Sahihs that `A'ishah said that some of the Companions asked the wives of the Prophet about the acts of worship that he performed in private. One of them said, "I will not eat meat," another said, "I will not marry women," while the third said, "I will not sleep on the bed." When the Prophet heard this statement, he said,

«مَا بَالُ أَقْوَامٍ يَقُولُ أَحَدُهُمْ كَذَا وَكَذَا، لكِنِّي أَصُومُ وَأُفْطِرُ، وَأَنَامُ وَأَقُومُ، وَآكُلُ اللَّحْمَ، وَأَتَزَوَّجُ النِّسَاءَ، فَمَنْ رَغِبَ عَنْ سُنَّتِي فَلَيْسَ مِنِّي»

(What is the matter with some people who said such and such I fast and break the fast, sleep and wake to stand to pray, eat meat, and marry women. He who is not pleased with my Sunnah is not of me.) Allah's statement,

وَلاَ تَعْتَدُواْ

(and transgress not.) means, do not exaggerate and make it hard for yourselves by prohibiting the permissible things. Do not transgress the limits by excessively indulging in the permissible matters; only use of it what satisfies your need; and do not fall into extravagance. Allah said in other Ayat,

وكُلُواْ وَاشْرَبُواْ وَلاَ تُسْرِفُواْ

(And eat and drink but waste not by extravagance.)7:31, and,

وَالَّذِينَ إِذَآ أَنفَقُواْ لَمْ يُسْرِفُواْ وَلَمْ يَقْتُرُواْ وَكَانَ بَيْنَ ذَلِكَ قَوَاماً

(And those, who, when they spend, are neither extravagant nor miserly, but hold a medium (way) between those (extremes).)25:67 So Allah legislated a medium way between those who are extreme and those who fall into shortcomings, and it does not allow excessive application, nor lack of application. This is why Allah said here,

لاَ تُحَرِّمُواْ طَيِّبَـتِ مَآ أَحَلَّ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ وَلاَ تَعْتَدُواْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لاَ يُحِبُّ الْمُعْتَدِينَ

(Make not unlawful the good things which Allah has made lawful to you, and transgress not. Verily, Allah does not like the transgressors.) then He said,

وَكُلُواْ مِمَّا رَزَقَكُمُ اللَّهُ حَلَـلاً طَيِّباً

(And eat of the things which Allah has provided for you, lawful and good,)5:88, eat of those items that are pure and lawful for you,

وَاتَّقُواْ اللَّهَ

(and have Taqwa of Allah,) in all your affairs, obey Him and seek His pleasure, all the while staying away from defiance and disobedience of Allah,

وَاتَّقُواْ اللَّهَ الَّذِى أَنتُم بِهِ مُؤْمِنُونَ

(and have Taqwa of Allah in Whom you believe.)

When a number of Companions resolved to practise fasting and night vigil continuously and to abstain from women perfume consumption of meat and sleeping on beds the following was revealed O you who believe do not forbid the good things that God has made lawful for you and do not transgress do not exceed God’s command; God does not love transgressors.

Sequence of Verses

Upto this point, the subject revolved around the people of the Book. Onwards, there is a return to subsidiary injunctions some of which were taken up early in the Sarah, and some others also in between. Also reported is a particular link as relevant to -the occasion - that monasticism has been mentioned in a complimentary sense a little earlier (82), though it is there in terms of a particular feature in it, which is the abandonment of worldly desires. But, since there was a probability that someone may take the whole concept of monasticism as praiseworthy, it was considered appropriate at this point that the making unlawful of what Allah has made lawful be forbidden. Commentary

Leaving the worldly pleasures, when permissible

The verses appearing above tell us that the renunciation of worldly life and the abstinence from appetites and passions is favourable within a certain limit, but any transgression of the Divinely-ordained limits in this matter too shall be blameworthy حَرَام and haram (unlawful, for-bidden). Details are being given below.

How Halal is turned into حَرَام haram : The Three Forms

There are three forms in which something made Halal (lawful and good) by Allah could be declared as حَرَام haram (unlawful and evil): (1) BELIEFWISE, that is, something is taken to be حَرَام haram by believing it to be so. (2) VERBALLY, that is, something is taken to be حَرَام haram for oneself by saying so - for instance, someone swears that he will not drink cold water, or would not eat such and such Halal food, or would not do something which is permissible. (3) PRACTICALLY, that is, someone who neither believes nor says anything, yet decides in practice that he or she would abandon something Halal forever.

1. Under the first situation, if that thing being Halal stands confirmed by absolute proofs, then, the person who takes it to be حَرَام haram shall become a disbeliever (kafir) because of that open contravention of the Divinely-ordained law.

2. And under the second situation, if someone has made something حَرَام haram for oneself by declaring it with words of oath, the oath will become effective. There are many words of oath details of which appear in Fiqh books - for example, someone clearly says: ` I swear by Allah, I will never eat that' or ` by Allah, I will not do that' or one might say, ` I make taking this or doing that حَرَام haram for me.' The rule which governs such actions is that taking such oaths unnecessarily is a sin. If taken, one must break the oath and make amends by paying the Kaffarah (expiation) of that oath, the detail about which will appear later.

3. The third will be a situation in which no Halal has been made حَرَام haram either by belief or word of mouth, but practically what one does is similar to what is done with something حَرَام haram, that is, takes it as obligatory to abandon it forever. The rule in this case is: If one takes the abandonment of the Halal to be an act of Thawab (merit, reward), then, it is Bid'ah (innovation in established religion) and Rahbaniyah (monasticism) - which is a grave sin as categorically laid down (Mansus) in the Qur'an and Sunnah; and acting against it is Wajib (necessary as an obligation); and adhering to such a restriction is an act of sin. Of course, if such a restriction is not there with the intention of Thawab, instead, it is there for some other reason, such as, some physical or spiritual sickness because of which one abandons something permanently, then, there will be no sin in doing so. Reports about some noble Sufis and other pious elders that they had abandoned some Halal things are all included under this third kind as they had found them to be harmful for their desiring self, or were advised by a pious elder to abstain from it as harmful in their case which they abandoned as a treatment and remedy. If so, it does not matter.

The Correct Attitude towards Halal Things

At the end of the first verse (87), it was said: وَلَا تَعْتَدُوا إِنَّ اللَّـهَ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمُعْتَدِينَ that is, ` and do not transgress the limits set by Allah because Allah does not like such transgressors.' Here, transgressing means that one abandons something Halal, without any valid excuse, as an act of Thawab. This is something an ignorant person takes to be Taqwa, fear of Allah, while, in the sight of Allah, that is transgression, which is impermissible. Therefore, it was said in the next verse (88): وَاتَّقُوا اللَّـهَ الَّذِي أَنتُم بِهِ مُؤْمِنُونَ that is, `(eat from the good and pure sustenance Allah has blessed you with) and keep fearing Allah whose believers you are.' Stated clearly in this verse is that leaving off good and pure things as a source of Thawab (reward) is no Taqwa. Rather, quite contrary to that, Taqwa lies in using them as the blessings of Allah and showing one's gratitude for them. However, if something is abandoned as a curative measure against a physical or spiritual disease, that does not count here.

(O ye who believe! Forbid not the good things which Allah hath made lawful for you�) [5:87]. Abu 'Uthman ibn 'Amr al-Mu'adhdhin informed us> Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Hamdan> al-Husayn ibn Nasr ibn Sufyan> Ishaq ibn Mansur> Abu 'Asim> 'Uthman ibn Sa'id>> 'Ikrimah> Ibn 'Abbas who related that a man went to see the Prophet, Allah bless him and give him peace, and said: �I have forbidden meat on myself because whenever I eat it I feel the urge to sleep with women�, and so the verse (O ye who believe! Forbid not the good things which Allah hath made lawful for you) and also (Eat of that which Allah hath bestowed on you as food lawful and good�) [5:88]. The commentators of the Qur'an said: �The Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, sat down one day and gave an admonition to people whereby he described the Day of Judgement to them and did not mention anything other than things which would instil fear in them. People cried as a result of the softening of their hearts. Then ten of the prophetic Companions gathered in the house of 'Uthman ibn Maz'un al-Jumahi. They included Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, 'Ali ibn Abi Talib, 'Abd Allah ibn Mas'ud, 'Abd Allah ibn 'Amr, Abu Dharr al-Ghifari, Salim, the client of Abu Hudhayfah, al-Miqdad ibn al-Aswad, Salman al-Farisi and Ma'qil ibn Muqarrin. They agreed to fast the day and stand in prayer at night, never to sleep in their beds, eat meat or fat, never to sleep with their wives or use perfume. They also agreed to wear coarse wool garments, reject the worldly life, wander through the land and become monks, and cut off their male organs. When the Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, heard of this, he gathered them and said: 'I was informed that you agreed to do such-and-such things, is this true?' They said: 'It is, but we only meant to do good'. He said to them: 'I was not commanded to do those things, and your own selves have a right over you. Fast and break fast, stand in prayer at night and sleep, for I stand in prayer at night but I also sleep; I sometimes fast and sometimes do not; I eat meat and fat.
