5:116 Al-Maaida (The Table)

{ وَإِذْ قَالَ اللَّهُ يَا عِيسَى ابْنَ مَرْيَمَ أَأَنْتَ قُلْتَ لِلنَّاسِ اتَّخِذُونِي وَأُمِّيَ إِلَهَيْنِ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ } وهذا توبيخ للنصارى الذين قالوا: إن الله ثالث ثلاثة، فيقول الله هذا الكلام لعيسى. فيتبرأ عيسى ويقول: { سُبْحَانَكَ } عن هذا الكلام القبيح، وعمّا لا يليق بك. { مَا يَكُونُ لِي أَنْ أَقُولَ مَا لَيْسَ لِي بِحَقٍّ } أي: ما ينبغي لي، ولا يليق أن أقول شيئا ليس من أوصافي ولا من حقوقي، فإنه ليس أحد من المخلوقين، لا الملائكة المقربون ولا الأنبياء المرسلون ولا غيرهم له حق ولا استحقاق لمقام الإلهية وإنما الجميع عباد، مدبرون، وخلق مسخرون، وفقراء عاجزون { إِنْ كُنْتُ قُلْتُهُ فَقَدْ عَلِمْتَهُ تَعْلَمُ مَا فِي نَفْسِي وَلَا أَعْلَمُ مَا فِي نَفْسِكَ } فأنت أعلم بما صدر مني و { إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ عَلَّامُ الْغُيُوبِ } وهذا من كمال أدب المسيح عليه الصلاة والسلام في خطابه لربه، فلم يقل عليه السلام: \"لم أقل شيئا من ذلك\" وإنما أخبر بكلام ينفي عن نفسه أن يقول كل مقالة تنافي منصبه الشريف، وأن هذا من الأمور المحالة، ونزه ربه عن ذلك أتم تنزيه، ورد العلم إلى عالم الغيب والشهادة.

هذا أيضا مما يخاطب الله به عبده ورسوله عيسى ابن مريم عليه السلام قائلا له يوم القيامة بحضرة من اتخذه وأمه إلهين من دون الله يا عيسى ابن مريم" أأنت قلت للناس اتخذوني وأمي إلهين" من دون الله وهذا تهديد للنصارى وتوبيخ وتقريع على رءوس الأشهاد هكذا قاله قتادة وغيره واستدل على ذلك بقوله تعالى" هذا يوم ينفع الصادقين صدقهم" وقال السدي: هذا الخطاب والجواب في الدنيا وقال ابن جرير: هذا هو الصواب وكان ذلك حين رفعه إلى السماء الدنيا: واحتج ابن جرير على ذلك بمعنيين "أحدهما" أن الكلام بلفظ المضي "والثاني" قوله. إن تعذبهم وإن تغفر لهم وهذان الدليلان فيهما نظر لأن كثيرا من أمور يوم القيامة ذكر بلفظ المضي ليدل على الوقوع والثبوت. ومعنى قوله" إن تعذبهم فإنهم عبادك" الآية التبري منهم ورد المشيئة فيهم إلى الله وتعليق ذلك على الشرط لا يقتضي وقوعه كما في نظائر ذلك من الآيات والذي قاله قتادة هو غيره هو الأظهر والله أعلم أن ذلك كائن يوم القيامة ليدل على تهديد النصارى وتفريعهم وتوبيخهم على رءوس الأشهاد يوم القيامة وقد روي بذلك حديث مرفوع رواه الحافظ ابن عساكر في ترجمة أبي عبدالله مولى عمر بن عبدالعزيز وكان ثقة قال: سمعت أبا بردة يحدث عمر بن عبدالعزيز عن أبيه أبي موسى الأشعري قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم "إذا كان يوم القيامة دعي بالأنبياء وأممهم ثم يدعى بعيسى فيذكره الله نعمته عليه فيقر بها فيقول يا عيسى ابن مريم" اذكر نعمتي عليك وعلى والدتك الآية ثم يقول" أأنت قلت للناس اتخذوني وأمي إلهين من دون الله فينكر أن يكون قال" ذلك فيؤتى بالنصارى فيسئلون فيقولون نعم هو أمرنا بذلك قال فيطول شعر عيسى عليه السلام فيأخذ كل ملك من الملائكة بشعرة من رأسه وجسده فيجاثيهم بين يدي الله عز وجل مقدار ألف عام حتى ترفع عليهم الحجة ويرفع لهم الصليب وينطلق بهم إلى النار" وهذا حديث غريب عزيز. وقوله سبحانك ما" يكون لي أن أقول ما ليس لي بحق" هذا توفيق للتأدب في الجواب الكامل كما قال ابن أبي حاتم: حدثنا أبي حدثنا ابن أبي عمر حدثنا سفيان عن عمرو عن طاوس عن أبي هريرة قال: يلقي عيسى حجته ولقاء الله تعالي في قوله" وإذ قال الله يا عيسى ابن مريم أأنت قلت للناس اتخذوني وأمي إلهين من دون الله" قال أبو هريرة عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فلقاه الله سبحانك" ما يكون لي أن أقول ما ليس لي بحق" إلى آخر الآية وقد رواه الثوري عن معمر عن ابن طاوس عن طاوس بنحوه وقوله" إن كنت قلته فقد علمته" أي إن كان صدر مني هذا فقد علمته يا رب فإنه لا يخفى عليك شيء فما قلته ولا أردته في نفسي ولا أضمرته ولهذا قال" تعلم ما في نفسي ولا أعلم ما في نفسك إنك أنت علام الغيوب".

`Isa Rejects Shirk and Affirms Tawhid

Allah will also speak to His servant and Messenger, `Isa son of Maryam, peace be upon him, saying to him on the Day of Resurrection in the presence of those who worshipped `Isa and his mother as gods besides Allah,

يعِيسَى ابْنَ مَرْيَمَ أَءَنتَ قُلتَ لِلنَّاسِ اتَّخِذُونِى وَأُمِّىَ إِلَـهَيْنِ مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ

(O `Isa, son of Maryam! Did you say unto men: `Worship me and my mother as two gods besides Allah') This is a threat and a warning to Christians, chastising them in public, as Qatadah and others said, and Qatadah mentioned this Ayah as evidence,

هَـذَا يَوْمُ يَنفَعُ الصَّـدِقِينَ صِدْقُهُمْ

("This is a Day on which the truthful will profit from their truth.") 5:119 Allah's statement,

سُبْحَـنَكَ مَا يَكُونُ لِى أَنْ أَقُولَ مَا لَيْسَ لِى بِحَقٍّ

(Glory be to You! It was not for me to say what I had no right (to say)...) contains Allah's direction for `Isa to utter the perfect answer. Ibn Abi Hatim recorded that Abu Hurayrah said, "`Isa will be taught his argument in reply to what Allah will ask him,

وَإِذْ قَالَ اللَّهُ يعِيسَى ابْنَ مَرْيَمَ أَءَنتَ قُلتَ لِلنَّاسِ اتَّخِذُونِى وَأُمِّىَ إِلَـهَيْنِ مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ

(And (remember) when Allah will say (on the Day of Resurrection): "O `Isa, son of Maryam! Did you say unto men: `Worship me and my mother as two gods besides Allah') 5:116." Abu Hurayrah then narrated that the Prophet said that Allah taught `Isa to say,

سُبْحَـنَكَ مَا يَكُونُ لِى أَنْ أَقُولَ مَا لَيْسَ لِى بِحَقٍّ

(Glory be to You! It was not for me to say what I had no right (to say)...) Ath-Thawri narrated this Hadith from Ma`mar from Ibn Tawus from Tawus. `Isa's statement,

إِن كُنتُ قُلْتُهُ فَقَدْ عَلِمْتَهُ

(Had I said such a thing, You would surely have known it.) means, had I said it, You, my Lord, would have known it, for nothing escapes Your knowledge. Rather, I have not said these words nor did the thought even cross my mind, this why he said,

تَعۡلَمُ مَا فِى نَفۡسِى وَلَآ أَعۡلَمُ مَا فِى نَفۡسِكَ‌ۚ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ عَلَّـٰمُ ٱلۡغُيُوبِ • مَا قُلۡتُ لَهُمۡ إِلَّا مَآ أَمَرۡتَنِى بِهِ

(You know what is in my inner self though I do not know what is in Yours, truly, You, only You, are the Knower of all that is hidden and unseen. Never did I say to them ought except what You (Allah) did command me to say...) and convey,

أَنِ اعْبُدُواْ اللَّهَ رَبِّى وَرَبَّكُمْ

(Worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord.) I only called them to what You sent me with and commanded me to convey to them,

أَنِ اعْبُدُواْ اللَّهَ رَبِّى وَرَبَّكُمْ

(Worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord) and this is what I conveyed to them,

وَكُنتُ عَلَيْهِمْ شَهِيداً مَّا دُمْتُ فِيهِمْ

(And I was a witness over them while I dwelled amongst them,) I was a witness over what they did when I was amongst them,

فَلَمَّا تَوَفَّيْتَنِى كُنتَ أَنتَ الرَّقِيبَ عَلَيْهِمْ وَأَنتَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَىْءٍ شَهِيدٌ

(but when You took me up, You were the Watcher over them, and You are a Witness to all things.) Abu Dawud At-Tayalisi recorded that Ibn `Abbas said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up once and gave us a speech in which he said,

«يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّكُمْ مَحْشُورُونَ إِلَى اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ حُفَاةً، عُرَاةً، غُرْلا»

ا (O people! You will be gathered to Allah while barefooted, naked and uncircumcised;

كَمَا بَدَأْنَآ أَوَّلَ خَلْقٍ نُّعِيدُهُ

(As We began the first creation, We shall repeat it.)

«وَإِنَّ أَوَّلَ الْخَلَائِقِ يُكْسَى يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ إِبْرَاهِيمُ، أَلَا وَإِنَّهُ يُجَاءُ بِرِجَالٍ مِنْ أُمَّتِي فَيُؤْخَذُ بِهِمْ ذَاتَ الشِّمَالِ، فَأَقُولُ: أَصْحَابِي، فَيُقَالُ:إِنَّكَ لَا تَدْرِي مَا أَحْدَثُوا بَعْدَكَ، فَأَقُولُ كَمَا قَالَ الْعَبْدُ الصَّالِح»

The first among the creation who will be covered with clothes will be Ibrahim. Some men from my Ummah will be brought and taken to the left (to the Fire) and I will yell, `They are my followers!' It will be said, `You do not know what they innvovated after you (in religion).' So I will say just as the righteous servant (`Isa) said,

مَا قُلْتُ لَهُمْ إِلاَّ مَآ أَمَرْتَنِى بِهِ أَنِ اعْبُدُواْ اللَّهَ رَبِّى وَرَبَّكُمْ وَكُنتُ عَلَيْهِمْ شَهِيداً مَّا دُمْتُ فِيهِمْ فَلَمَّا تَوَفَّيْتَنِى كُنتَ أَنتَ الرَّقِيبَ عَلَيْهِمْ وَأَنتَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَىْءٍ شَهِيدٌ - إِن تُعَذِّبْهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ عِبَادُكَ وَإِن تَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ فَإِنَّكَ أَنتَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ

(And I was a witness over them while I dwelled amongst them, but when You took me up, You were the Watcher over them, and You are a Witness to all things. If You punish them, they are Your servants, and if You forgive them, verily You, only You are the Almighty, the All-Wise.)

«فَيُقَالُ: إِنَّ هؤُلَاءِ لَمْ يَزَالُوا مُرْتَدِّينَ عَلَى أَعْقَابِهِمْ مُنْذُ فَارَقْتَهُم»

(It will further be said, `These people kept reverting back on their heels after you left them.')" Al-Bukhari also recorded this Hadith in the explanation of this Ayah. Allah said;

إِن تُعَذِّبْهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ عِبَادُكَ وَإِن تَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ فَإِنَّكَ أَنتَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ

(If You punish them, they are Your servants, and if You forgive them, verily You, only You are the Almighty, the All-Wise.) All matters refer back to Allah, for He does what He Wills and none can question Him about what He does, while He will question them. This Ayah also shows the crime of the Christians who invented a lie against Allah and His Messenger, thus making a rival, wife and son for Allah. Allah is glorified in that He is far above what they attribute to Him. So this Ayah 5:118 has tremendous value and delivers unique news.

قَالَ اللَّهُ هَـذَا يَوْمُ يَنفَعُ الصَّـدِقِينَ صِدْقُهُمْ لَهُمْ جَنَّـتٌ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهَا الاٌّنْهَـرُ خَـلِدِينَ فِيهَآ أَبَداً رَّضِىَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ وَرَضُواْ عَنْهُ ذلِكَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِيمُ - للَّهِ مُلْكُ السَّمَـوَتِ وَالاٌّرْضِ وَمَا فِيهِنَّ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَىْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

And mention when God says that is when God will say to Jesus at the Resurrection in rebuke of his followers ‘O Jesus son of Mary did you say to mankind “Take me and my mother as gods besides God”?’ He Jesus says shuddering ‘Glory be to You! exalted be You above all that does not befit You such as having a partner and so on. It is not mine it is unjustified for me to say what I have no right to bi-haqq ‘right to’ is the predicate of laysa ‘not’; lī ‘mine’ is explicative. If I indeed had said it You would have known it. You know what is hidden by me in my self but I do not know what is within Your Self that is what You keep hidden of Your knowledge You are the Knower of things unseen.

Commentary

Important Notes

1. In the first verse (116), the question asked and the answer given by Sayyidna ` Isa (علیہ السلام) establishes that Allah alone has the full knowledge of everything, therefore, He is not asking Sayyidna ` Isa (علیہ السلام) because He does not know. In fact, the purpose is to admonish his people who call them Christians that the one they are taking to be god is himself confessing to his servitude quite contrary to the belief they hold - and that he is free of all their accusations. (Ibn Kathir)

2. About the sentence: فَلَمَّا تَوَفَّيْتَنِي كُنتَ أَنتَ الرَّ‌قِيبَ عَلَيْهِمْ (And when You picked me up You were the One watching over them) in verse 117, a de-tailed discussion of the subject of the ` death' or ` having been raised to-ward Allah' has appeared in the Commentary on Surah Al-'Imran under verse 3:55: إِنِّي مُتَوَفِّيكَ وَرَ‌افِعُكَ (I am to take you in full and lift you towards Me). It may be seen there [ Ma` ariful-Qur'an, English Translation, Volume II, pages 76-81]. As for using the verse 117 : فَلَمَّا تَوَفَّيْتَنِي ` falamma tawaffaitani) to reject his ascension to heavens and to establish his natural death is not a sound inference, because the time of this conversation shall be the day of Qiyamah - and at that time, after he has descended down from the heaven, he would have had his natural and real death. Therefore, as reported by Ibn Kathir on the authority of a narration from Sayyidna Abu Musa al-Ash` ari ؓ ، the Holy Prophet ﷺ said: On the day of Qiyamah, the prophets and their communities will be summoned. Then, Sayyidna ` Isa (علیہ السلام) will be called. Then, Allah Ta` ala will remind him of His blessings and drawing him closer, He will say, ` O ` Isa son of Maryam: اذْكُرْ‌ نِعْمَتِي عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَىٰ وَالِدَتِكَ Remember My blessing upon you and upon your mother.' Then, in the end, He would say: يَا عِيسَى ابْنَ مَرْ‌يَمَ أَأَنتَ قُلْتَ لِلنَّاسِ اتَّخِذُونِي وَأُمِّيَ إِلَـٰهَيْنِ مِن دُونِ اللَّـهِ : ( O ` Isa son of Maryam, did you say to the people: Take me and my mother as gods beside Allah?). Sayyidna ` Isa (علیہ السلام) will deny it saying that he did not. Then, the question will be asked from the Christians. They will say, ` yes, this is what he had ordered us to do.' After that, they will be driven towards Hell.
