39:71 Az-Zumar (The Groups)

لما ذكر تعالى حكمه بين عباده، الذين جمعهم في خلقه ورزقه وتدبيره، واجتماعهم في الدنيا، واجتماعهم في موقف القيامة، فرقهم تعالى عند جزائهم، كما افترقوا في الدنيا بالإيمان والكفر، والتقوى والفجور، فقال: { وَسِيقَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا إِلَى جَهَنَّمَ } أي: سوقا عنيفا، يضربون بالسياط الموجعة، من الزبانية الغلاظ الشداد، إلى شر محبس وأفظع موضع، وهي جهنم التي قد جمعت كل عذاب، وحضرها كل شقاء، وزال عنها كل سرور، كما قال تعالى: { يَوْمَ يُدَعُّونَ إِلَى نَارِ جَهَنَّمَ دَعًّا } أي: يدفعون إليها دفعا، وذلك لامتناعهم من دخولها.ويساقون إليها { زُمَرًا } أي: فرقا متفرقة، كل زمرة مع الزمرة التي تناسب عملها، وتشاكل سعيها، يلعن بعضهم بعضا، ويبرأ بعضهم من بعض. { حَتَّى إِذَا جَاءُوهَا } أي: وصلوا إلى ساحتها { فُتِحَتْ } لهم أي: لأجلهم { أَبْوَابُهَا } لقدومهم وقِرًى لنزولهم.{ وَقَالَ لَهُمْ خَزَنَتُهَا } مهنئين لهم بالشقاء الأبدي، والعذاب السرمدي، وموبخين لهم على الأعمال التي أوصلتهم إلى هذا المحل الفظيع: { أَلَمْ يَأْتِكُمْ رُسُلٌ مِنْكُمْ } أي: من جنسكم تعرفونهم وتعرفون صدقهم، وتتمكنون من التلقي عنهم؟. { يَتْلُونَ عَلَيْكُمْ آيَاتِ رَبِّكُمْ } التي أرسلهم اللّه بها، الدالة على الحق اليقين بأوضح البراهين.{ وَيُنْذِرُونَكُمْ لِقَاءَ يَوْمِكُمْ هَذَا } أي: وهذا يوجب عليكم اتباعهم والحذر من عذاب هذا اليوم، باستعمال تقواه، وقد كانت حالكم بخلاف هذه الحال؟{ قَالُوا } مقرين بذنبهم، وأن حجة اللّه قامت عليهم: { بَلَى } قد جاءتنا رسل ربنا بآياته وبيناته، وبينوا لنا غاية التبيين، وحذرونا من هذا اليوم. { وَلَكِنْ حَقَّتْ كَلِمَةُ الْعَذَابِ عَلَى الْكَافِرِينَ } أي: بسبب كفرهم وجبت عليهم كلمة العذاب، التي هي لكل من كفر بآيات اللّه، وجحد ما جاءت به المرسلون، فاعترفوا بذنبهم وقيام الحجة عليهم.

يخبر تعالى عن حال الأشقياء الكفار كيف يساقون إلى النار وإنما يساقون سوقا عنيفا بزجر وتهديد ووعيد كما قال عز وجل "يوم يدعون إلى نار جهنم دعا" أي يدفعون إليها دفعا وهذا وهم عطاش ظماء كما قال جل وعلا في الآية الأخرى "يوم نحشر المتقين إلى الرحمن وفدا ونسوق المجرمين إلى جهنم وردا" وهم في تلك الحال صم وبكم وعمي منهم من يمشي على وجهه "ونحشرهم يوم القيامة على وجوههم عميا وبكما وصما مأواهم جهنم كلما خبت زدناهم سعيرا" وقوله تبارك وتعالى "حتى إذا جاءوها فتحت أبوابها" أي بمجرد وصولهم إليها فتحت لهم أبوابها سريعا لتعجل لهم العقوبة ثم يقول لهم خزنتها من الزبانية الذين هم غلاظ الأخلاق شداد القوى على وجه التقريع والتوبيخ والتنكيل "ألم يأتكم رسل منكم" أي من جنسكم تتمكنون من مخاطبتهم والأخذ عنهم "يتلون عليكم آيات ربكم" أى يقيمون عليكم الحجج والبراهين على صحة ما دعوكم إليه "وينذرونكم لقاء يومكم هذا" أي ويحذرونكم من شر هذا اليوم؟ فيقول الكفار لهم "بلى" أي قد جاءونا وأنذروا وأقاموا علينا الحجج والبراهين "ولكن حقت كلمة العذاب على الكافرين" أي ولكن كذبناهم وخالفناهم لما سبق لنا من الشقوة التي كنا نستحقها حيث عدلنا عن الحق إلى الباطل كما قال عز وجل مخبرا عنهم في الآية الأخرى "كلما ألقي فيها فوج سألهم حزنتها ألم يأتكم نذير قالوا بلى قد جاءنا نذير فكذبنا وقلنا ما نزل الله من شيء إن أنتم إلا في ضلال كبير وقالوا لو كنا نسمع أو نعقل ما كنا في أصحاب السعير" أي رجعوا على أنفسهم بالملامة والندامة "فاعترفوا بذنبهم فسحقا لأصحاب السعير" أي بعدا لهم وخسارا.

How the Disbelievers will be driven to Hell

Allah tells us how the doomed disbeliever will be driven to Hell by force, with threats and warnings. This is like the Ayah:

يَوْمَ يُدَعُّونَ إِلَى نَارِ جَهَنَّمَ دَعًّا

(The Day when they will be pushed down by force to the fire of Hell, with a horrible, forceful pushing.) (52:13) swhich means, they will be pushed and forced towards it, and they will be extremely thirsty, as Allah says:

يَوْمَ نَحْشُرُ الْمُتَّقِينَ إِلَى الرَّحْمَـنِ وَفْداً - وَنَسُوقُ الْمُجْرِمِينَ إِلَى جَهَنَّمَ وِرْداً

(The Day We shall gather those who have Taqwa unto the Most Gracious, like a delegation. And We shall drive the criminals to Hell, in a thirsty state.) (19:85-86) When they are in that state, they will be blind, dumb and deaf, and some of them will be walking on their faces:

وَنَحْشُرُهُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَـمَةِ عَلَى وُجُوهِهِمْ عُمْيًا وَبُكْمًا وَصُمًّا مَّأْوَاهُمْ جَهَنَّمُ كُلَّمَا خَبَتْ زِدْنَاهُمْ سَعِيرًا

(and We shall gather them together on the Day of Resurrection on their faces, blind, dumb and deaf; their abode will be Hell; whenever it abates, We shall increase for them the fierceness of the Fire) (17:97).

حَتَّى إِذَا جَآءُوهَا فُتِحَتْ أَبْوَبُهَا

(till when they reach it, the gates thereof will be opened.) means, as soon as they arrive, the gates will be opened quickly, in order to hasten on their punishment. Then the keepers of Hell, who are stern angels, severe and strong, will say to them by way of rebuking and reprimanding:

أَلَمْ يَأْتِكُمْ رُسُلٌ مِّنكُمْ

(Did not the Messengers come to you from yourselves,) meaning, `of your own kind, so that you could have spoken to them and learned from them,'

يَتْلُونَ عَلَيْكُمْ ءَايَـتِ رَبِّكُمْ

(reciting to you the Ayat of your Lord,) means, `establishing proof against you that what they brought to you was true,'

وَيُنذِرُونَكُمْ لِقَآءَ يَوْمِكُمْ هَـذَا

(and warning you of the meeting of this Day of yours) means, `warning you of the evil of this Day.' The disbeliever will say to them:

بَلَى

(Yes,) meaning, `they did come to us and warn us and establish proof and evidence against us,'

وَلَـكِنْ حَقَّتْ كَلِمَةُ الْعَذَابِ عَلَى الْكَـفِرِينَ

(but the Word of torment has been justified against the disbelievers!) means, `but we rejected them and went against them, because we were already doomed, as it was decreed that we would be, because we had turned away from the truth towards falsehood.' This is like the Ayat:

كُلَّمَا أُلْقِىَ فِيهَا فَوْجٌ سَأَلَهُمْ خَزَنَتُهَآ أَلَمْ يَأْتِكُمْ نَذِيرٌ

(Every time a group is cast therein, its keeper will ask: "Did no warner come to you" They will say: "Yes, indeed a warner came to us, but we denied him and said: `Allah never revealed anything; you are only in great error."' And they will say: "Had we but listened or used our intelligence, we would not have been among the dwellers of the blazing Fire!") (67:9-10) which means, they will feel regret and will blame themselves.

فَاعْتَرَفُواْ بِذَنبِهِمْ فَسُحْقًا لاًّصْحَـبِ السَّعِيرِ

(Then they will confess their sin. So, away with the dwellers of the blazing Fire!) (67:11) means, they are lost and doomed.

قِيلَ ادْخُلُواْ أَبْوَبَ جَهَنَّمَ خَـلِدِينَ فِيهَا

(It will be said (to them): "Enter you the gates of Hell, to abide therein...") means everyone who sees them and the situation they are in, will testify that they deserve the punishment. These words are not attributed to any specific person, but they are said as an indication that the entire universe will bear witness that they deserve what they are suffering, in accordance with the judgement of the Most Just, the All-Knowing. Allah says:

قِيلَ ادْخُلُواْ أَبْوَبَ جَهَنَّمَ خَـلِدِينَ فِيهَا

(It will be said (to them): "Enter you the gates of Hell, to abide therein...") meaning, `to stay there forever; you will never leave or depart.'

فَبِئْسَ مَثْوَى الْمُتَكَـبِّرِينَ

(And (indeed) what an evil abode of the arrogant!) means, `what an evil destiny and what an evil place to stay, because of your arrogance in this world and your refusal to follow the truth; this is what has led you to this, what an evil state and what an evil final destination!'

And those who disbelieve will be driven violently to Hell in troops in separate groups until when they reach it its gates are opened futihat abwābuhā is the response to idhā ‘when’ and its keepers will say to them ‘Did there not come to you any messengers from among yourselves reciting to you the signs of your Lord the Qur’ān and otherwise and warning you of the encounter of this day of yours?’ They will say ‘Yes indeed; but the word of chastisement — namely the verse Assuredly I will fill Hell … Q. 11119 — against the disbelievers has been fulfilled’.

In verse 69, it was said: وَجِيءَ بِالنَّبِيِّينَ وَالشُّهَدَاءِ (and the prophets and the witnesses will be brought,) It means that, at the time of reckoning on the plains of Resurrection, present there will be all prophets as well as all other witnesses. The prophets themselves will also be among the witnesses as said in the Qur'an: جِئْنَا مِن كُلِّ أُمَّةٍ بِشَهِيدٍ (We shall bring a witness from every community - An-Nisa', 4:41). And angels too will be among the witnesses, as in the Qur'an: مَّعَهَا سَائِقٌ وَشَهِيدٌ (with each someone [ meaning an angel ] to drive and someone [ meaning an angel ] to bear witness - Qaf, 50:21) where the identity of the driver and the witness has been clearly established as being the angels (Tafsir Ad-Durr-ul-Manthur). And among the witnesses, there will be the followers of the prophet of Islam as in the Qur'an: لِّتَكُونُوا شُهَدَاءَ عَلَى النَّاسِ (and [ so that ] you become witnesses to [ other ] people - Al-Hajj, 22:78). And, for that matter, even one's own body limbs will appear as witnesses as said in the Qur'an تُكَلِّمُنَا أَيْدِيهِمْ وَتَشْهَدُ أَرْ‌جُلُهُم (their hands will speak to Us and their feet will bear witness - Sin, 36:65).
