31:27 Luqman (Luqman)

ثم أخبر عن سعة كلامه وعظمة قوله، بشرح يبلغ من القلوب كل مبلغ، وتنبهر له العقول، وتحير فيه الأفئدة، وتسيح في معرفته أولو الألباب والبصائر، فقال: { وَلَوْ أَنَّمَا فِي الْأَرْضِ مِنْ شَجَرَةٍ أَقْلَامٌ } يكتب بها { وَالْبَحْرُ يَمُدُّهُ مِنْ بَعْدِهِ سَبْعَةُ أَبْحُرٍ } مدادا يستمد بها، لتكسرت تلك الأقلام ولفني ذلك المداد، و لم تنفد { كَلِمَاتُ اللَّهِ } تعالى، وهذا ليس مبالغة لا حقيقة له، بل لما علم تبارك وتعالى، أن العقول تتقاصر عن الإحاطة ببعض صفاته، وعلم تعالى أن معرفته لعباده، أفضل نعمة، أنعم بها عليهم، وأجل منقبة حصلوها، وهي لا تمكن على وجهها، ولكن ما لا يدرك كله، لا يترك كله، فنبههم تعالى تنبيها تستنير به قلوبهم، وتنشرح له صدورهم، ويستدلون بما وصلوا إليه إلى ما لم يصلوا إليه، ويقولون كما قال أفضلهم وأعلمهم بربه: \"لا نحصي ثناء عليك، أنت كما أثنيت على نفسك\" وإلا، فالأمر أجل من ذلك وأعظم.وهذا التمثيل من باب تقريب المعنى، الذي لا يطاق الوصول إليه إلى الأفهام والأذهان، وإلا فالأشجار، وإن تضاعفت على ما ذكر، أضعافا كثيرة، والبحور لو امتدت بأضعاف مضاعفة، فإنه يتصور نفادها وانقضاؤها، لكونها مخلوقة.وأما كلام اللّه تعالى، فلا يتصور نفاده، بل دلنا الدليل الشرعي والعقلي، على أنه لا نفاد له ولا منتهى، وكل شيء ينتهي إلا الباري وصفاته { وَأَنَّ إِلَى رَبِّكَ الْمُنْتَهَى } وإذا تصور العقل حقيقة أوليته تعالى وآخريته، وأنه كل ما فرضه الذهن من الأزمان السابقة، مهما تسلسل الفرض والتقدير، فهو تعالى قبل ذلك إلى غير نهاية، وأنه مهما فرضه الذهن والعقل، من الأزمان المتأخرة، وتسلسل الفرض والتقدير، وساعد على ذلك من ساعد، بقلبه ولسانه، فاللّه تعالى بعد ذلك إلى غير غاية ولا نهاية.واللّه في جميع الأوقات يحكم، ويتكلم، ويقول، ويفعل كيف أراد، وإذا أراد لا مانع له من شيء من أقواله وأفعاله، فإذا تصور العقل ذلك، عرف أن المثل الذي ضربه اللّه لكلامه، ليدرك العباد شيئا منه، وإلا، فالأمر أعظم وأجل.ثم ذكر جلالة عزته وكمال حكمته فقال: { إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ } أي: له العزة جميعا، الذي ما في العالم العلوي والسفلي من القوة إلا منه، أعطاها للخلق، فلا حول ولا قوة إلا به، وبعزته قهر الخلق كلهم، وتصرف فيهم، ودبرهم، وبحكمته خلق الخلق، وابتدأه بالحكمة، وجعل غايته والمقصود منه الحكمة، وكذلك الأمر والنهي وجد بالحكمة، وكانت غايته المقصودة الحكمة، فهو الحكيم في خلقه وأمره.

يقول تعالى مخبرا عن عظمته وكبريائه وجلاله وأسمائه الحسنى وصفاته العلا وكلماته التامة التي لا يحيط بها أحد ولا اطلاع لبشر على كتبها وإحصائها كما قال سيد البشر وخاتم الرسل "لا أحصي ثناء عليك أنت كما أثنيت على نفسك" فقال تعالى "ولو أن ما في الأرض من شجرة أقلام والبحر يمده من بعده سبعة أبحر ما نفدت كلمات الله" أي ولو أن جميع أشجار الأرض جعلت أقلاما وجعل البحر مدادا وأمده سبعة أبحر معه فكتبت بها كلمات الله الدالة على عظمته وصفاته وجلاله لتكسرت الأقلام ونفد ماء البحر ولو جاء أمثالها مددا وإنما ذكرت السبعة على وجه المبالغة ولم يرد الحصر ولا أن ثمّ سبعة أبحر موجودة محيطة بالعالم كما يقوله من تلقاه من الإسرائيليات التي لا تصدق ولا تكذب بل كما قال تعالى في الآية الأخرى "قل لو كان البحر مدادا لكلمات ربي لنفد البحر قبل أن تنفد كلمات ربي ولو جئنا بمثله مددا "فليس المراد بقوله "بمثله" آخر فقط بل بمثله ثم بمثله ثم بمثله ثم هلم جرا لأنه لا حصر لآيات الله وكلماته قال الحسن البصري لو جعل شجر الأرض أقلاما وجعل البحر مدادا وقال الله إن من أمري كذا ومن أمري كذا لنفد ماء البحر وتكسرت الأقلام. وقال قتادة قال المشركون إنما هذا كلام يوشك أن ينفذ فقال الله تعالى "ولو أن ما في الأرض من شجرة أقلام" أي لو كان شجر الأرض أقلاما ومع البحر سبعة أبحر ما كان لتنفد عجائب ربي وحكمته وخلقه وعلمه. وقال الربيع بن أنس إن مثل علم العباد كلهم في علم الله كقطرة من ماء البحور كلها وقد أنزل الله ذلك "ولو أن ما في الأرض من شجرة أقلام" الآية يقول لو كان البحر مدادا لكلمات الله والأشجار كلها أقلاما لانكسرت الأقلام وفني ماء البحر وبقيت كلمات الله قائمة لا يفنيها شيء لأن أحدا لا يستطيع أن يقدر قدره ولا يثني عليه كما ينبغي حتى يكون هو الذي يثني على نفسه إن ربنا كما يقول وفوق ما نقول وقد روي أن هذه الآية نزلت جوابا لليهود قال ابن إسحاق حدثني محمد بن أبي محمد عن سعيد بن جبير أو عكرمة عن ابن عباس أن أحبار يهود قالوا لرسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم بالمدينة يا محمد أرأيت قولك "وما أوتيتم من العلم إلا قليلا "إيانا تريد أم قومك؟ فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم "كلاكما" قالوا ألست تتلو فيما جاءك أنا قد أوتينا التوراة فيها تبيان لكل شيء؟ فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم "إنها في علم الله قليل وعندكم من ذلك ما يكفيكم" وأنزل الله فيما سألوه عنه من ذلك "ولو أن ما في الأرض من شجرة أقلام" الآية. وهكذا روى عكرمة وعطاء بن يسار وهذا يقتضي أن هذه الآية مدنية لا مكية والمشهور أنها مكية والله أعلم وقوله "إن الله عزيز حكيم" أي عزيز قد عز كل شيء وقهره وغلبه فلا مانع لما أراد ولا مخالف ولا معقب لحكمه حكيم في خلقه وأمره وأقواله وأفعاله وشرعه وجميع شؤونه.

The Words of Allah cannot be counted or exhausted

Allah tells us of His might, pride, majesty, beautiful Names and sublime attributes, and His perfect Words which no one can encompass. No human being knows their essence or nature, or how many they are. As the Leader of Mankind and Seal of the Messengers ﷺ said:

«لَا أُحْصِي ثَنَاءً عَلَيْكَ أَنْتَ كَمَا أَثْنَيْتَ عَلَى نَفْسِك»

(I cannot praise You enough; You are as You have praised yourself.) Allah says:

وَلَوْ أَنَّمَا فِى الاٌّرْضِ مِن شَجَرَةٍ أَقْلاَمٌ وَالْبَحْرُ يَمُدُّهُ مِن بَعْدِهِ سَبْعَةُ أَبْحُرٍ مَّا نَفِدَتْ كَلِمَـتُ اللَّهِ

(And if all the trees on the earth were pens and the sea, with seven seas behind it to add to its, yet the Words of Allah would not be exhausted.) meaning, even if all the trees on earth were made into pens and the sea was made into ink, and topped up with seven more like it, and they were used to write the Words of Allah showing His might, attributes and majesty, the pens would break and the ink would run dry, even if more were brought. The number seven is used to indicate a large amount, it is not to be taken literally or to be understood as referring to the seven oceans of the world, as was suggested by those who took this idea from Israelite stories, which we neither believe nor reject. As Allah says elsewhere:

قُل لَّوْ كَانَ الْبَحْرُ مِدَاداً لِّكَلِمَـتِ رَبِّى لَنَفِدَ الْبَحْرُ قَبْلَ أَن تَنفَدَ كَلِمَـتُ رَبِّى وَلَوْ جِئْنَا بِمِثْلِهِ مَدَداً

(Say: "If the sea were ink for the Words of my Lord, surely, the sea would be exhausted before the Words of my Lord would be finished, even if We brought like it for its aid.") (18:109). The words

بِمِثْلِهِ

(like it) do not mean merely another one, but another like it and another and another and another, etc., because there is no limit to the signs and Words of Allah.

أَنَّ اللَّهَ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ

(Verily, Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise.) means, He is All-Mighty and has subjugated all things to His will, so nothing can prevent what He wills, and none can oppose or put back His decision. He is All-Wise in His creation, commands, Words, actions, Laws and all His affairs.

مَّا خَلْقُكُمْ وَلاَ بَعْثُكُمْ إِلاَّ كَنَفْسٍ وَحِدَةٍ

(The creation of you all and the resurrection of you all are only as a single person.) means, His creation and resurrection of all of mankind on the Day of Resurrection is, in relation to His power, like the creation and resurrection of a single soul; all of this is easy for Him.

إِنَّمَآ أَمْرُهُ إِذَآ أَرَادَ شَيْئاً أَن يَقُولَ لَهُ كُن فَيَكُونُ

(Verily, His command, when He intends a thing, is only that He says to it, "Be!" -- and it is!) (36:82)

وَمَآ أَمْرُنَآ إِلاَّ وَحِدَةٌ كَلَمْحٍ بِالْبَصَرِ

(And Our commandment is but one as the twinkling of an eye. ) (54:50). This means He only has to command a thing once, and it will happen. There is no need for Him to repeat it or confirm it.

فَإِنَّمَا هِىَ زَجْرَةٌ وَحِدَةٌ - فَإِذَا هُم بِالسَّاهِرَةِ

(But it will be only a single Zajrah. When behold, they find themselves on the surface of the earth alive after their death.)(79:13)

إِنَّ اللَّهَ سَمِيعٌ بَصِيرٌ

(Verily, Allah is All-Hearer, All-Seer.) means, just as He hears all that they say, so He also sees all that they do, as if He is hearing and seeing a single soul. His power over all of them is like His power over a single soul, Allah says:

مَّا خَلْقُكُمْ وَلاَ بَعْثُكُمْ إِلاَّ كَنَفْسٍ وَحِدَةٍ

(The creation of you all and the resurrection of you all are only as a single person.)

And if all the trees on earth were pens and the sea wa’l-bahru is a supplement to mā the subject of anna replenished with seven more seas were ink the Words of God would not be spent those words expressing all the things He knows written in those pens with that amount of ink or with even more ink than that would not be spent for His knowledge exalted be He is infinite. Truly God is Mighty nothing being beyond Him Wise from Whose knowledge and wisdom nothing escapes.

This has been stated in the verse: وَلَوْ أَنَّمَا فِي الْأَرْ‌ضِ مِن شَجَرَ‌ةٍ أَقْلَامٌ (27) through a similitude. Says the similitude: 'If all trees that are on the earth were to be pens (or pens were to be made of all branches on them) and the ocean (converted into ink) is supported by seven seas following it, the words of Allah would (still) not come to an end.' The expression: کلمات اللہ (kalimatul-lah, i.e. the words of Allah) means His knowledge and wisdom (Ruh ul-Maani and Mazhari) which includes the manifestations of Divine power and Divine blessings. Then, the 'seven seas', referred to here, do not mean that there are seven seas present elsewhere. Instead of that, this is a manner of saying: Suppose if this ocean were to be replenished with seven more oceans, still then, all these words of Allah could not be committed to writing. Even the number of 'seven' appears here as a part of the example. No restriction is intended. Another verse of the Qur'an proves it. There it was said:

قُل لَّوْ كَانَ الْبَحْرُ‌ مِدَادًا لِّكَلِمَاتِ رَ‌بِّي لَنَفِدَ الْبَحْرُ‌ قَبْلَ أَن تَنفَدَ كَلِمَاتُ رَ‌بِّي وَلَوْ جِئْنَا بِمِثْلِهِ مَدَدًا

Say, 'If the ocean were to be ink for the Words of my Lord, the ocean would have been consumed before the Words of my Lord are exhausted, even though we were to bring another one, like it, in addition' - Al-Kahf, 18:109.

In this verse, by saying: بِمِثْلِهِ (bimithlihi: like it), a clear hint has been given that, no matter how many oceans are supposed, their collective writing fluid cannot circumscribe the Words of Allah. Rationally, the reason is obvious. The oceans may be added one after the other and be they seven or seven thousand, they shall still remain limited while the Words of Allah (knowledge) are unlimited. How, then, can something limited make an all-encompassing coverage of what is unlimited?

As it appears in some narratives, this verse was revealed in response to a question posed by Jewish priests. The reason which prompted them to ask this question was the verse of the Qur'an where it has been said: وَمَا أُوتِيتُم مِّنَ الْعِلْمِ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا (and you are not given but a little from the knowledge - A1-'Isra', 17:85). When the Holy Prophet ﷺ came to the blessed city of Madinah, some Jewish priests visited him and it was about this verse that they confronted him by saying, "You say that you have been given a little from the knowledge. Is this what you are saying about your people, or have you included us too therein?" The Holy Prophet ﷺ said, "I mean all," that is, 'our people and the Jews and Christians as well.' Thereupon, increasing the tempo of their opposition, they said, "To us, Allah Ta’ ala has given the Torah which stands out as: تِبْيَانًا لِّكُلِّ شَيْءٍ (an explanation of everything)." He said, "That too is but a little as compared to Divine Knowledge. Then, even the total knowledge contained in the Torah is not known to you either - what you go by is no more than a certain measure of what you need. Therefore, as compared to the Divine Knowledge, the collective knowledge of all Scriptures and Prophets is also nothing but a little." It was to support this statement that the verse: وَلَوْ أَنَّمَا فِي الْأَرْ‌ضِ مِن شَجَرَ‌ةٍ أَقْلَامٌ (And if all trees that are on the earth were to be pens... - 27) was revealed. (Ibn Kathir)

(And if all the trees in the earth were pens�) [31:27]. The commentators of the Qur�an said: �The Jews asked the Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, about the spirit, and so Allah, exalted is He, revealed (They will ask thee concerning the Spirit. Say: the Spirit is by command of my Lord, and of knowledge ye have been vouchsafed but little) [17:85]. When the Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, migrated to Medina, Jewish doctors went to see him and said: �O Muhammad, we have been informed that you said (of knowledge ye have been vouchsafed but little). Are you referring, by this, to us or to your people?� The Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, said: �The knowledge that you have is very little in comparison to the knowledge of Allah, glorified is He. Allah, exalted is He, has given you something which will benefit you if only you practise it�. They said: �O Muhammad, how can you say this when it is you who says (� and he unto whom wisdom is given, he truly hath received abundant good�) [2:269]? How can little knowledge and abundant good be combined together?� As a response, Allah, exalted is He, revealed (And if all the trees in the earth were pens�)�.
