3:61 Aal-i-Imraan (The Family of Imraan)

أي: { فمن } جادلك { وحاجك } في عيسى عليه السلام وزعم أنه فوق منزلة العبودية، بل رفعه فوق منزلته { من بعد ما جاءك من العلم } بأنه عبد الله ورسوله وبينت لمن جادلك ما عندك من الأدلة الدالة على أنه عبد أنعم الله عليه، دل على عناد من لم يتبعك في هذا العلم اليقيني، فلم يبق في مجادلته فائدة تستفيدها ولا يستفيدها هو، لأن الحق قد تبين، فجداله فيه جدال معاند مشاق لله ورسوله، قصده اتباع هواه، لا اتباع ما أنزل الله، فهذا ليس فيه حيلة، فأمر الله نبيه أن ينتقل إلى مباهلته وملاعنته، فيدعون الله ويبتهلون إليه أن يجعل لعنته وعقوبته على الكاذب من الفريقين، هو وأحب الناس إليه من الأولاد والأبناء والنساء، فدعاهم النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم إلى ذلك فتولوا وأعرضوا ونكلوا، وعلموا أنهم إن لاعنوه رجعوا إلى أهليهم وأولادهم فلم يجدوا أهلا ولا مالا وعوجلوا بالعقوبة، فرضوا بدينهم مع جزمهم ببطلانه، وهذا غاية الفساد والعناد، فلهذا قال تعالى { فإن تولوا فإن الله عليم بالمفسدين } فيعاقبهم على ذلك أشد العقوبة. وأخبر تعالى { إن هذا } الذي قصه الله على عباده هو { القصص الحق } وكل قصص يقص عليهم مما يخالفه ويناقضه فهو باطل { وما من إله إلا الله } فهو المألوه المعبود حقا الذي لا تنبغي العبادة إلا له، ولا يستحق غيره مثقال ذرة من العبادة { وإن الله لهو العزيز } الذي قهر كل شيء وخضع له كل شيء { الحكيم } الذي يضع الأشياء مواضعها، وله الحكمة التامة في ابتلاء المؤمنين بالكافرين، يقاتلونهم ويجادلونهم ويجاهدونهم بالقول والفعل

ثم قال تعالى آمرا رسوله صلى الله عليه وسلم أن يباهل من عاند الحق في أمر عيسى بعد ظهور البيان "فمن حاجك فيه من بعد ما جاءك من العلم فقل تعالوا ندع أبناءنا وأبناءكم ونساءنا ونساءكم وأنفسنا وأنفسكم" أي نحضرهم في حال المباهلة "ثم نبتهل" أي نلتعن "فنجعل لعنة الله على الكاذبين" أي منا ومنكم. وكان سبب نزول هذه المباهله وما قبلها من أول السورة إلى هنا في وفد نجران: إن النصارى لما قدموا فجعلوا يحاجون في عيسى ويزعمون فيه ما يزعمون من البنوة والإلهية فأنزل الله صدر في هذه السورة ردا عليهم كما ذكره الإمام محمد بن إسحاق بن يسار وغيره: قال ابن إسحاق في سيرته المشهورة وغيره: وقدم على رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وفد نصارى نجران ستون راكبا فيهم أربعة عشر رجلا من أشرافهم يؤول أمرهم إليهم وهم: العاقب واسمه عبدالمسيـح والسيد وهو الأيهم وأبو حارثة بن علقمة أخو بكر بن وائل وأويس بن الحارث وزيد وقيس ويزيد وابناه وخويلد وعمرو وخالد وعبدالله ومحسن وأمر هؤلاء يؤول إلى ثلاثة منهم وهم العاقب وكان أمير القوم وذا رأيهم وصاحب مشورتهم والذي لا يصدرون إلا عن رأيه والسيد وكان عالمهم وصاحب رحلهم ومجتمعهم وأبو حارثه بن علقمة وكان أسقفهم صاحب مدارستهم وكان رجلا من العرب من بني بكر بن وائل ولكنه تنصر فعظمته الروم وملوكها وشرفوه وبنوا له الكنائس وأخدموه لما يعلمونه من صلابته في دينهم وقد كان يعرف أمر رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وصفته وشأنه ما علمه من الكتب المتقدمة ولكن حمله ذلك على الاستمرار في النصرانية لما يرى من تعظيمه فيها وجاهه عند أهلها. قال ابن إسحاق: وحدثني محمد بن جعفر بن الزبير قال: قدموا على رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم المدينة فدخلوا عليه مسجده حين صلى العصر عليهم ثياب الحبرات جبب وأردية من جمال رجال بني الحارث بن كعب قال: يقول من رآهم من أصحاب النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم ما رأينا بعدهم وفدا مثلهم وقد حانت صلاتهم فقاموا في مسجد رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: "دعوهم" فصلوا الى المشرق قال: فكلم رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم منهم أبو حارثة بن علقمة والعاقب عبدالمسيح والسيد الأيهم وهم من النصرانية على دين الملك مع اختلاف أمرهم يقولون: هو الله ويقولون: هو ولد الله ويقولون: هو ثالث ثلاثة تعالى الله عن قولهم علوا كبيرا. وكذلك النصرانية فهم يحتجون في قولهم هو الله بأنه كان يحيي الموتي ويبرئ الأكمه والأبرص والأسقام ويخبر بالغيوب ويخلق من الطين كهيئة الطير فينفخ فيه فيكون طيرا وذلك كله بأمر الله وليجعله الله آية للناس ويحتجون في قولهم بأنه ابن الله يقولون: لم يكن له أب يعلم وقد تكلم في المهد بشيء لم يصنعه أحد من بني آدم قبله. ويحتجون على قولهم بأنه ثالث ثلاثة بقول الله تعالى فعلنا وأمرنا وخلقنا وقضينا فيقولون: لو كان واحدا ما قال إلا فعلت وأمرت وقضيت وخلقت ولكنه هو وعيسى ومريم - تعالى الله وتقدس وتنزه عما يقول الظالمون والجاحدون علوا كبيرا - وفي كل ذلك من قولهم قد نزل القرآن. فلما كلمه الحبران قال لهما رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم "أسلما" قالا قد أسلمنا قال "إنكما لم تسلما فأسلما" قالا: بلى قد أسلمنا قبلك قال "كذبتما يمنعكما من الإسلام ادعاؤكما لله ولدا وعبادتكما الصليب وأكلكما الخنزير" قالا: فمن أبوه يا محمد؟ فصمت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم عنهما فلم يجبهما فأنزل الله في ذلك من قولهم واختلاف أمرهم صدر سورة آل عمران إلى بضع وثمانين آية منها ثم تكلم ابن إسحاق على تفسيرها إلى أن قال: فلما أتى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم الخبر من الله والفصل من القضاء بينه وبيتهم وأمر بما أمر به من ملاعنتهم أن ردوا ذلك عليه دعاهم إلى ذلك فقالوا: يا أبا القاسم دعنا ننظر في أمرنا ثم نأتيك بما نريد أن نفعل فيما دعوتنا إليه ثم انصرفوا عنه ثم خلوا بالعاقب وكان ذا رأيهم فقالوا: يا عبدالمسيح ماذا ترى؟ فقال: والله يا معشر النصارى لقد عرفتم أن محمدا لنبي مرسل ولقد جاءكم بالفصل من خبر صاحبكم. ولقد علمتم أنه ما لاعن قوم نبيا قط فبقي كبيرهم ولا نبت صغيرهم وإنه للاستئصال منكم إن فعلتم فإن كنتم أبيتم إلا ألف دينكم والإقامة على ما أنتم عليه من القول في صاحبكم فوادعوا الرجل وانصرفوا إلى بلادكم. فأتوا النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فقالوا: يا أبا القاسم قد رأينا أن لا نلاعنك ونتركك على دينك ونرجع على ديننا ولكن ابعث معنا رجلا من أصحابك ترضاه لنا يحكـم بيننا في أشياء اختلفنا فيها في أموالنا فإنكم عندنا رضا قال محمد بن جعفر: فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: "ائتوني العشية أبعث معكم القوي الأمين" فكان عمر بن الخطاب رضي الله عنه يقول: ما أحببت الإمارة قط حبي إياها يومئذ رجاء أن أكون صاحبها فرحت إلى الظهر مهجرا فلما صلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم الظهر سلم ثم نظر عن يمينه وشماله فجعلت أتطاول له ليراني فلم يزل يلتمس ببصره حتى رأى أبا عبيدة بن الجراح فدعاه فقال "اخرج معهم فاقض بينهم بالحق فيما اختلفوا فيه" قال عمر: فذهب بها أبو عبيدة رضي الله عنه وقد روى ابن مردويه من طريق محمد بن إسحق عن عاصم بن عمر بن قتادة عن محمود بن لبيد عن رافع بن خديج: أن وفد أهل نجران قدموا على رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فذكر نحوه إلا أنه قال في الأشراف: كانوا اثني عشر وذكر بقيته بأطول من هذا السياق وزيادات أخر. وقال البخاري: حدثنا عباس بن الحسين حدثنا يحيى بن آدم عن إسرائيل عن أبي إسحق عن صلة بن زفر عن حذيفة رضي الله عنه قال: جاء العاقب والسيد صاحبا نجران إلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يريدان أن يلاعناه قال: فقال أحدهما لصاحبه: لا تفعل فوالله لئن كان نبيا فلاعناه لا نفلح نحن ولا عقبنا من بعدنا قالا: إنا نعطيك ما سألتنا وابعث معنا رجلا أمينا ولا تبعث معنا إلا أمينا فقال "لأبعثن معكم رجلا أمينا حق أمين" فاستشرف لها أصحاب رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فقال "قم يا أبا عبيدة بن الجراح" فلما قام قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم "هذا أمين هذه الأمة". رواه البخاري ومسلم والترمذي والنسائي وابن ماجه من حديث إسرائيل عن أبي إسحق عن صلة عن حذيفة بنحوه وقد رواه أحمد والنسائي وابن ماجه من حديث إسرائيل عن أبي إسحق عن صلة عن ابن مسعود بنحوه. وقال البخاري: حدثنا أبو الوليد حدثنا شعبة عن خالد عن أبي قلابة عن أنس عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال "لكل أمة أمين وأمين هذه الأمة أبو عبيدة بن الجراح". وقال الإمام أحمد: حدثنا إسماعيل بن يزيد الرقي أبو يزيد حدثنا قرة عن عبدالكريم بن مالك الجزري عن عكرمة عن ابن عباس قال: قال أبو جهل قبحه الله إن رأيت محمدا يصلي عند الكعبة لآتينه حتى أطأ على رقبته قال: فقال "لو فعل لأخذتة الملائكة عيانا ولو أن اليهود تمنوا الموت لماتوا ولرأوا مقاعدهم من النار ولو خرج الذين يباهلون رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم لرجعوا لا يجدون مالا ولا أهلا" وقد رواه البخاري والترمذي والنسائي من حديث عبدالرزاق عن معمر عن عبدالكريم به وقال الترمذي: حسن صحيح وقد روى البيهقي في دلائل النبوة قصة وفد نجران مطولة جدا ولنذكره فإن فيه فوائد كثيرة وفيه غرابة وفيه مناسبة لهذا المقام قال البيهقي: حدثنا أبو عبدالله الحافظ أبو سعيد ومحمد بن موسى بن الفضل قالا حدثنا أبو العباس محمد بن يعقوب حدثنا أحمد بن عبدالجبار حدثنا يونس بن بكير عن سلمة بن عبد يسوع عن أبيه عن جده قال يونس- وكان نصرانيا فأسلم - أن رسول الله صلي الله تعالى عليه وعلى آله وسلم كتب إلى أهل نجران قبل أن ينزل عليه طس سليمان "باسم إله إبراهيم وإسحق ويعقوب من محمد النبي رسول الله إلى أسقف نجران وأهل نجران أسلم أنتم فإني أحمد إليكم إله إبراهيم وإسحق ويعقوب أما بعد فإني أدعوكم إلى عبادة الله من عبادة العباد وأدعوكم إلى ولاية الله من ولاية العباد فإن أبيتم فالجزية فإن أبيتم فقد آذنتكم بحرب والسلام" فلما أتى الأسقف الكتاب وقرأه فظع به وذعره ذعرا شديدا وبعث إلى رجل من أهل نجران يقال له شرحبيل بن وداعة وكان من همدان ولم يكن أحد يدعى إذا نزلت معضلة قبله لا الأيهم ولا السيد ولا العاقب فدفع الأسقف كتاب رسول الله صلى إلى شرحبيل فقرأه فقال الأسقف: يا أبا مريم ما رأيك؟ فقال شرحبيل: قد علمت ما وعد الله إبراهيم في ذرية إسماعيل من النبوة فما مؤمن أن يكون هذا هو ذاك الرجل ليس لي في أمر النبوة رأي ولو كان في أمر من أمور الدنيا لأشرت عليك فيه برأيي واجتهدت لك فقال الأسقف: تنح فاجلس فتنحى شرحبيل فجلس ناحية فبعث الأسقف إلى رجل من أهل نجران يقال له عبدالله بن شرحبيل وهو من ذي أصبح من حمير فأقراه الكتاب وسأله عن الرأي فيه فقال مثل قول شرحبيل فقال له الأسقف: تنح فاجلس فتنحى عبدالله فجلس ناحية فبعث الأسقف إلى رجل من أهل نجران يقال له جبار بن فيض من بني الحارث بن كعب أحد بني الحماس فأقرأه الكتاب وسأله عن الرأي فيه؟ فقال له مثل قول شرحبيل و عبدالله فأمره الأسقف فتنحى فجلس ناحية فلما اجتمع الرأي منهم على تلك المقالة جميعا أمر الأسقف بالناقوس فضرب به ورفعت النيران والمسوح في الصوامع وكذلك كانوا يفعلون إذا فزعوا بالنهار وإذا كان فزعهم ليلا ضربوا بالناقوس ورفعت النيران في الصوامع فاجتمعوا حين ضرب بالناقوس ورفعت المسوح أهل الوادي أعلاه وأسفله وطول الوادي مسيرة يوم للراكـب السريع وفيه ثلاث وسبعون قرية وعشرون ومائة ألف مقاتل فقرأ عليهم كتاب رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وسألهم عن الرأي فيه فاجتمع رأي أهل الرأي منهم على أن يبعثوا شرحبيل بن وداعة الهمدانى و عبدالله بن شرحبيل الأصبحي وجبار بن فيض الحارثي فيأتونهم بخبر رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فانطلق الوفد حتى إذا كانوا بالمدينة وضعوا ثياب السفر عنهم ولبسوا حللا لهم يجرونها من حبرة وخواتيم الذهب ثم انطلقوا حتى أتوا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فسلموا عليه فلم يرد عليهم وتصدوا لكلامه نهارا طويلا فلم يكلمهم وعليهم تلك الحلل وخواتيم الذهب فانطلقوا يتبعون عثمان بن عفان وعبدالرحمن بن عوف وكانا معرفة لهم فوجدوهما في ناس من المهاجرين والأنصار في مجلس فقالوا يا عثمان ويا عبدالرحمن إن نبيكم كتب إلينا كتابا فأقبلنا مجيبين له فأتيناه فسلمنا عليه فلم يرد سلامنا وتصديقنا لكلامه نهارا طويلا فأعيانا أن يكلمنا فما الرأي منكما أترون أن نرجع؟ فقالا لعلي بن أبي طالب وهو في القوم: ما ترى يا أبا الحسن في هؤلاء القوم؟ فقال علي لعثمان وعبدالرحمن: أرى أن يضعوا حللهم هذه وخواتيمهم ويلبسوا ثياب سفرهم يعودون إليه ففعلوا فسلموا عليه فرد سلامهم ثم قال "والذي بعثني بالحق لقد أتوني المرة الأولى وإن إبليس لمعهم" ثم سألهم وسألوه فلم تزل به وبهم المسألة حتى قالوا له: ما تقول في عيسى فإنا نرجع إلى قومنا ونحن نصارى يسرنا إن كنت نبيا أن نسمع ما تقول فيه؟ فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم "ما عندي فيه شيء يومي هذا فأقيموا حتى أخبركم بما يقول لي ربي في عيسى" فأصبح الغد وقد أنزل الله هذه الآية "إن مثل عيسى عند الله كمثل آدم - إلى قوله - الكاذبين" فأبوا أن يقروا بذلك فلما أصبح رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم الغد بعد ما أخبرهم الخبر أقبل مشتملا على الحسن والحسين في خميل له وفاطمة تمشي عند ظهره للملاعنة وله يومئذ عدة نسوة فقال شرحبيل لصاحبيه: لقد علمتما أن الوادي إذا اجتمع أعلاه وأسفله لم يردوا ولم يصدروا إلا عن رأيي وإني والله أرى أمرا ثقيلا والله لئن كان هذا الرجل مبعوثا فكنا أول العرب طعنا في عينيه وردا عليه أمره لا يذهب لنا من صدره ولا من صدور أصحابه حتى يصيبنا بجائحة وأنا لأدنى العرب منهما جوارا ولئن كان هذا الرجل نبيا مرسلا فلاعناه لا يبقى منا على وجه الأرض شعر ولا ظفر إلا هلك فقال صاحباه: فما الرأي يا أبا مريم؟ فقال: أرى أن أحكمه فإني أرى رجلا لا يحكم شططا أبدا فقالا له: أنت وذاك قال: فتلقى شرحبيل رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فقال له: إني قد رأيت خيرا من ملاعنتك فقال "وما هو؟" فقال: حكمك اليوم إلى الليل وليلتك إلى الصباح فمهما حكمت فينا فهو جائز فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: "لعل وراءك أحدا يثرب عليك "؟ فقال شرحبيل: سل صاحبي فسألهما فقالا: ما يرد الوادي ولا يصدر إلا عن رأي شرحبيل فرجع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فلم يلاعنهم حتى إذا كان من الغد أتوه فكتب لهم هذا الكتاب بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم هذا ما كتب النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم لنجران - إن كان عليهم حكمه - في كل ثمرة وكل صفراء وبيضاء وسوداء ورقيق فاضل عليهم وترك ذلك كله لهم على ألفي حلة في كل رجب ألف حلة وفي كل صفر ألف حلة" وذكر تمام الشروط وبقية السياق والغرض أن وفودهم كان في سنة تسع لأن الزهري قال: كان أهل نجران أول من أدى الجزية إلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وآية الجزية إنما أنزلت بعد الفتح وهي قوله تعالى قاتلوا الذين لا يؤمنون بالله ولا باليوم الآخر الآية وقال أبو بكر بن مردويه: حدثنا سليمان بن أحمد حدثنا أحمد بن داود المكي حدثنا بشر بن مهران حدثنا محمد بن دينار عن داود بن أبي هند عن الشعبي عن جابر قال: قدم على النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم العاقب والطيب فدعاهما إلى الملاعنة فواعداه على أن يلاعناه الغداة قال: فغدا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فأخذ بيد علي وفاطمة والحسن والحسين ثم أرسل إليهما فأبيا أن يجيبا وأقرا له بالخراج قال: فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم "والذي بعثني بالحق لو قالا: لا لأمطر عليهم الوادي نارا" قال جابر: وفيهم نزلت "ندع أبناءك وأبناءكم ونساءك ونساءكم وأنفسنا وأنفسكم" قال جابر "أنفسنا وأنفسكم" رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وعلي بن أبي طالب "وأبناءنا" الحسن والحسين "ونساءنا" فاطمة. وهكذا رواه الحاكم في مستدركه عن علي بن عيسى عن أحمد بن محمد بن الأزهري عن علي بن حجر عن علي بن مسهر عن داود بن أبي هند به بمعناه. ثم قال: صحيح على شرط مسلم ولم يخرجاه هكذا. قالا: وقد رواه أبو داود الطيالسي عن شعبة عن المغيرة عن الشعبي مرسلا وهذا أصح وقد روى عن ابن عباس والبراء نحو ذلك.

The Similarities Between the Creation of Adam and the Creation of `Isa

Allah said,

إِنَّ مَثَلَ عِيسَى عِندَ اللَّهِ

(Verily, the likeness of `Isa before Allah) regarding Allah's ability, since He created him without a father,

كَمَثَلِ ءَادَمَ

(is the likeness of Adam), for Allah created Adam without a father or a mother. Rather,

خَلَقَهُ مِن تُرَابٍ ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهُ كُن فَيَكُونُ

(He created him from dust, then (He) said to him: "Be!" and he was.)

Therefore, He Who created Adam without a father or a mother is able to create `Isa, as well, without a father. If the claim is made that `Isa is Allah's son because he was created without a father, then the same claim befits Adam even more. However, since such a claim regarding Adam is obviously false, then making the same claim about `Isa is even more false.

Furthermore, by mentioning these facts, Allah emphasizes His ability, by creating Adam without a male or female, Hawa' from a male without a female, and `Isa from a mother without a father, compared to His creating the rest of creation from male and female. This is why Allah said in Surah Maryam,

وَلِنَجْعَلَهُ ءَايَةً لِّلْنَّاسِ

(And We made him a sign for mankind) 19: 21.

Allah said in this Ayah,

الْحَقُّ مِن رَّبِّكَ فَلاَ تَكُنْ مِّن الْمُمْتَرِينَ

((This is) the truth from your Lord, so be not of those who doubt.) meaning, this is the only true story about `Isa, and what is beyond truth save falsehood Allah next commands His Messenger to call those who defy the truth, regarding `Isa, to the Mubahalah (the curse).

The Challenge to the Mubahalah

فَمَنْ حَآجَّكَ فِيهِ مِن بَعْدِ مَا جَآءَكَ مِنَ الْعِلْمِ فَقُلْ تَعَالَوْاْ نَدْعُ أَبْنَآءَنَا وَأَبْنَآءَكُمْ وَنِسَآءَنَا وَنِسَآءَكُمْ وَأَنفُسَنَا وأَنفُسَكُمْ

(Then whoever disputes with you concerning him after the knowledge that has come to you, say: "Come, let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves") for the Mubahalah,

ثُمَّ نَبْتَهِلْ

(then we pray), supplicate,

فَنَجْعَل لَّعْنَتُ اللَّهِ عَلَى الْكَـذِبِينَ

(and we invoke Allah's curse upon the liars) among the two of us.

The reason for the call to Mubahalah and the revelation of the Ayat from the beginning of this Surah until here, is that a delegation from the Christians of Najran (in Yemen) came to Al-Madinah to argue about `Isa, claiming that he was divine and the son of Allah. Allah sent down the beginning of this Surah until here, to refute their claims, as Imam Muhammad bin Ishaq bin Yasar and other scholars stated.

Muhammad bin Ishaq bin Yasar said in his famous Sirah, "The delegation of Christians from Najran came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . The delegation consisted of sixty horsemen, including fourteen of their chiefs who make decisions. These men were Al-`Aqib, also known as `Abdul-Masih, As-Sayyid, also known as Al-Ayham, Abu Harithah bin `Alqamah, of the family of Bakr bin Wa`il and Uways bin Al-Harith. They also included, Zayd, Qays, Yazid, Nabih, Khuwaylid, `Amr, Khalid, `Abdullah and Yuhannas. Three of these men were chiefs of this delegation, Al-`Aqib, their leader and to whom they referred for advice and decision; As-Sayyid, their scholar and leader in journeys and social gatherings; and Abu Harithah bin `Alqamah, their patriarch, priest and religious leader. Abu Harithah was an Arab man from the family of Bakr bin Wa`il, but when he embraced Christianity, the Romans and their kings honored him and built churches for him (or in his honor). They also supported him financially and gave him servants, because they knew how firm his faith in their religion was." Abu Harithah knew the description of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from what he read in earlier divine Books. However, his otherwise ignorance led him to insist on remaining a Christian, because he was honored and had a high position with the Christians. Ibn Ishaq said, "Muhammad bin Ja`far bin Az-Zubayr said that, `The (Najran) delegation came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in Al-Madinah, entered his Masjid wearing robes and garments, after the Prophet had prayed the `Asr prayer. They accompanied a caravan of camels led by Bani Al-Harith bin Ka`b. The Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who saw them said that they never saw a delegation like them after that... Then Abu Harithah bin `Alqamah and Al-`Aqib `Abdul-Masih or As-Sayyid Al-Ayham spoke to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and they were Christians like the king (Roman King). However, they disagreed about `Isa; some of them said, `He is Allah,' while some said, `He is the son of Allah,' and some others said, `He is one of a trinity.' Allah is far from what they attribute to Him."

Indeed, these are the creeds of the Christians. They claim that `Isa is God, since he brought the dead back to life, healed blindness, leprosy and various illnesses, told about matters of the future, created the shape of birds and blew life into them, bringing them to life. However, all these miracles occurred by Allah's leave, so that `Isa would be a sign from Allah for people.

They also claim that `Isa is the son of Allah, since he did not have a father and he spoke when he was in the cradle, a miracle which had not occurred by any among the Children of Adam before him, so they claim. They also claim that `Isa is one of a trinity, because Allah would say, `We did, command, create and demand.' They said, `If Allah were one, he would have said, `I did, command, create and decide.' This is why they claim that `Isa and Allah are one (Trinity). Allah is far from what they attribute to Him, and we should mention that the Qur'an refuted all these false Christian claims.

Ibn Ishaq continued, "When these Ayat came to the Messenger from Allah ﷺ, thus judging between him and the People of the Book, Allah also commanded the Prophet to call them to the Mubahalah if they still refused the truth. The Prophet called them to the Mubahalah. They said, `O Abu Al-Qasim! Let us think about this matter and get back to you with our decision to what we want to do.' They left the Prophet and conferred with Al-`Aqib, to whom they referred to for advice. They said to him, `O `Abdul-Masih! What is your advice' He said, `By Allah, O Christian fellows! You know that Muhammad is a Messenger and that he brought you the final word regarding your fellow (`Isa). You also know that no Prophet conducted Mubahalah with any people, and the old persons among them remained safe and the young people grew up. Indeed, it will be the end of you if you do it. If you have already decided that you will remain in your religion and your creed regarding your fellow (`Isa), then conduct a treaty with the man (Muhammad) and go back to your land.' They came to the Prophet and said, `O Abu Al-Qasim! We decided that we cannot do Mubahalah with you and that you remain on your religion, while we remain on our religion. However, send with us a man from your Companions whom you are pleased with to judge between us regarding our monetary disputes, for you are acceptable to us in this regard."'

Al-Bukhari recorded that Hudhayfah said, "Al-`Aqib and As-Sayyid, two leaders from Najran, came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ seeking to invoke Allah for curses (against whoever is unjust among them), and one of them said to the other, `Let us not do that. By Allah, if he were truly a Prophet and we invoke Allah for curses, we and our offspring shall never succeed afterwards.' So they said, `We will give you what you asked and send a trusted man with us, just a trusted man.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said;

«لَأَبْعَثَنَّ مَعَكُمْ رَجُلًا أَمِينًا حَقَّ أَمِين»

فاستشرف لها أصحاب رسول اللهصلى الله عليه وسلّم، فقال:

«قُمْ يَا أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ بْنَ الْجَرَّاح»

فلما قام، قال رسول اللهصلى الله عليه وسلّم:

«هَذَا أَمِينُ هذِهِ الْأُمَّة»

("Verily, I will send a trusted man with you, a truly trustworthy man." The Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ all felt eager to be that man. The Messenger said, "O Abu `Ubaydah bin Al-Jarrah! Stand up." When Abu `Ubaydah stood up, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "This is the trustee of this Ummah."')

Al-Bukhari recorded that Anas said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said on another occasion,

«لِكُلِّ أُمَّةٍ أَمِينٌ، وَأَمِينُ هذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ بْنُ الْجَرَّاح»

(Every Ummah has a trustee, and the trustee of this Ummah is Abu `Ubaydah bin Al-Jarrah.)

Imam Ahmad recorded that Ibn `Abbas said, "Abu Jahl, may Allah curse him, said, `If I see Muhammad praying next to the Ka`bah, I will step on his neck.' The Prophet later said,

«لَوْ فَعَلَ لَأَخَذَتْهُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ عِيَانًا، ولو أن اليهود تمنوا الموت لماتوا، ورأوا مقاعدهم من النار، ولو خرج الذين يباهلون رسول اللهصلى الله عليه وسلّم لرجعوا لا يجدون مالًا ولا أهلًا»

(Had he tried to do it, the angels would have taken him publicly. Had the Jews wished for death, they would have perished and would have seen their seats in the Fire. Had those who sought Mubahalah with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, went ahead with it, they would not have found estates or families when they returned home)." Al-Bukhari, At-Tirmidhi and An-Nasa'i also recorded this Hadith, which At-Tirmidhi graded Hasan Sahih.

Allah then said,

إِنَّ هَـذَا لَهُوَ الْقَصَصُ الْحَقُّ

(Verily, this is the true narrative) meaning, what we narrated to you, O Muhammad, about `Isa is the plain truth that cannot be avoided,

وَمَا مِنْ إِلَـهٍ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ لَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُفَإِن تَوَلَّوْاْ

(and none has the right to be worshipped but Allah. And indeed, Allah is the All-Mighty, the All-Wise. And if they turn away,) by abandoning this truth,

فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلِيمٌ بِالْمُفْسِدِينَ

(then surely, Allah is All-Aware of those who do mischief.) for those who abandon the truth for falsehood commit mischief, and Allah has full knowledge of them and will subject them to the worst punishment. Verily, Allah is able to control everything, all praise and thanks are due to Him, and we seek refuge with Him from His revenge.

And whoever from among the Christians disputes with you concerning him after the knowledge of his affair that has come to you say to them ‘Come! Let us call our sons and your sons our wives and your wives our selves and your selves and gather them together then let us humbly pray and invoke God’s curse upon those who lie’ by saying ‘Lord curse the one that tells lies concerning the affair of Jesus’. The Prophet s had called upon the Najrān delegation to do this when they disputed with him about Jesus. They said ‘Let us think about it and we will come back to you’. The judicious one among them said ‘You know that he is a prophet and that every people that has ever challenged a prophet to a mutual imprecation has been destroyed’. They left him and departed. When they went to see the Prophet s who had set out with al-Hasan al-Husayn Fātima and ‘Alī he said to them the Najrān delegation ‘When I supplicate you say ‘Amen’; but they refrained from this mutual imprecation and made peace with the Prophet on the condition that they pay the jizya as reported by Abū Nu‘aym. According to Ibn ‘Abbās the Prophet said ‘Had they set out and performed the mutual cursing they would have gone home and found neither possessions nor family’. It is also reported that had they set out with this intention they would have been consumed by fire.

The Meaning of Mubahalah

As stated earlier, verse 61 has instructed the Holy Prophet ﷺ to invite his opponents (Christians) to Mubahalah which literally means 'mutual prayer' but in the terminology of Islamic Shari'ah it refers to a particular form of resolving religious disputes. When the argumentations from both sides fail to resolve a religious issue, the parties jointly pray Allah to cast His curse on whichever of the two parties is parties is false. Since curse means 'moving someone far away from the divine mercy', - and moving far away from mercy is being close to divine wrath--therefore, the essence of the meaning is: Wrath be on the liar. As such, whoever is the liar shall face the evil consequences whereupon the truth will become evident before the disbelievers as well. Invocation in this manner is called 'Mubahalah'.

Originally, the Mubahalah can be carried out by the disputants only; they can simply get together and pray. It is not necessary that all their family members are assembled. However, if all the family members participate in the Mubahalah, it becomes more effective. (That is why the Holy Prophet JJ was instructed to invite the family members of both sides).

'Son' includes grandson

In verse 61 the words 'our sons' does not mean 'our' sons as of the loins only. Instead, the sense is general. They may be sons or grandsons, because this is how the word is used in common usage. Therefore, the grandsons of the Holy Prophet ﷺ ، namely Sayyidna Hasan and Sayyidna Husain ؓ as well as Sayyidna ` Ali ؓ the son-in-law of the Holy Prophet ﷺ are all included in the words: 'our sons'.

Sayyidna ` Ali ؓ has another additional reason for being included in the 'sons' of the Holy Prophet ﷺ because he had grown up under the patronage of the Holy Prophet ﷺ who had treated him like his own son.

It is, therefore, evident that Sayyidna ` Ali ؓ is included in the words: 'our sons'. Some Shiites have claimed that since he was not the son of the Holy Prophet ﷺ he could not be referred to by the Holy Prophet ﷺ as 'our son'. Through this notion the Shiites conclude that Sayyidna ` Ali ؓ was included in the words 'ourselves', therefore, he was the immediate successor of the Holy Prophet ﷺ .

The fallacy of this argument is evident from what has been discussed above.

(� say (unto him): Come! We will summon our sons and your sons�) [3:61]. Abu Sa�d informed us> �Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad al-Zimjari> Ahmad ibn Ja�far ibn Malik> �Abd Allah ibn Ahmad ibn Hanbal> his father> Husayn> Hammad ibn Salamah> Yunus> al-Hasan who said: �The two monks of Najran came to see the Prophet, Allah bless him and give him peace, and he invited them to surrender to Allah. One of them said: �We have surrendered to Allah before you�. He said: �You lie! Three things prevent you from surrendering to Allah: your prostration before the cross, your claim that Allah has a son and your consumption of wine�. They said: �What do you say about Jesus?� The Prophet, Allah bless him and give him peace, did not answer. But then this verse was revealed (This (which) We recite unto thee is a revelation and a wise reminder� Lo! the likeness of Jesus with Allah is as the likeness of Adam) up to Allah�s saying (� say (unto him): Come! We will summon our sons and your sons�). Then the Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, challenged them to summon Allah�s curse upon the one who is lying amongst them (Mula�anah). The Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, went and brought al-Hasan, al-Husayn, Fatimah and all his family and children, peace be upon them. When the two Christians left, one of them said to the other: �Consent to pay the Jizyah and do not agree to summon Allah�s curse on the liar�. They went back and said: �We agree to pay the Jizyah and abstain from summoning Allah�s curse on the liar� �. �Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Hasan al-Hafiz informed us among that which he gave us permission to narrate from him> Abu Hafs �Umar ibn Ahmad al-Wa�iz> �Abd Allah ibn Sulayman ibn al-Ash�ath> Yahya ibn Hatim al-�Askari> Bishr ibn Mihran> Muhammad ibn Dinar> Dawud ibn Abi Hind> al-Sha�bi> Jabir ibn �Abd Allah who said: �The delegation of the people of Najran came to see the prophet, Allah bless him and give him peace. The deputy chief and the master spoke with the Prophet and he invited them to surrender to Allah. They said: �We have surrendered to Him before you�. He said: �You lie! And if you wish I will inform you about that which prevents you from surrendering to Allah�.
