3:37 Aal-i-Imraan (The Family of Imraan)

{ فتقبلها ربها بقبول حسن } أي: جعلها نذيرة مقبولة، وأجارها وذريتها من الشيطان { وأنبتها نباتًا حسنًا } أي: نبتت نباتا حسنا في بدنها وخلقها وأخلاقها، لأن الله تعالى قيض لها زكريا عليه السلام { وكفلها } إياه، وهذا من رفقه بها ليربيها على أكمل الأحوال، فنشأت في عبادة ربها وفاقت النساء، وانقطعت لعبادة ربها، ولزمت محرابها أي: مصلاها فكان { كلما دخل عليها زكريا المحراب وجد عندها رزقًا } أي: من غير كسب ولا تعب، بل رزق ساقه الله إليها، وكرامة أكرمها الله بها، فيقول لها زكريا { أنى لك هذا قالت هو من عند الله } فضلا وإحسانا { إن الله يرزق من يشاء بغير حساب } أي: من غير حسبان من العبد ولا كسب، قال تعالى: { ومن يتق الله يجعل له مخرجًا ويرزقه من حيث لا يحتسب } وفي هذه الآية دليل على إثبات كرامات الأولياء الخارقة للعادة كما قد تواترت الأخبار بذلك، خلافا لمن نفى ذلك، فلما رأى زكريا عليه السلام ما من الله به على مريم، وما أكرمها به من رزقه الهنيء الذي أتاها بغير سعي منها ولا كسب، طمعت نفسه بالولد

يخبر ربنا أنه تقبلها من أمها نذيرة وأنه أنبتها نباتا حسنا أي جعلها شكلا مليحا ونظرا بهيجا ويسر لها أسباب القبول وقرنها بالصالحين من عباده تتعلم منهم العلم والخير والدين فلهذا قال "وكفلها زكريا" بتشديد الفاء ونصب زكريا على المفعولية أي جعله كافلا لها قال ابن إسحق: وما ذلك إلا أنها كانت يتيمة وذكر غيره: إن بني إسرائيل أصابتهم سنة جدب فكفل زكريا مريم لذلك ولا منافاة بين القولين والله أعلم وإنما قدر الله كون زكريا كفلها لسعادتها لتقتبس منه علما جما نافعا وعملا صالحا ولأنه كان زوج خالتها على ما ذكره ابن إسحق وابن جرير وغيرهما وقيل: زوج أختها كما ورد في الصحيح "فإذا بيحيى وعيسى وهما ابنا الخالة" وقد يطلق على ما ذكره ابن إسحق ذلك أيضا توسعا فعلى هذا كانت في حضانة خالتها وقد ثبت في الصحيح: أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قضى في عمارة بنت حمزة أن تكون في حضانة خالتها امرأة جعفر بن أبي طالب وقال:"الخالة بمنزلة الأم" ثم أخبر تعالى عن سيادتها وجلادتها في محل عبادتها فقال "كلما دخل عليها زكريا المحراب وجد عندها رزقا قال مجاهد وعكرمة وسعيد بن جبير وأبو الشعثاء وإبراهيم النخعي والضحاك وقتادة والربيع بن أنس وعطية العوفي والسدي: يعني وجد عندها فاكهة الصيف في الشتاء وفاكهة الشتاء في الصيف وعن مجاهد "وجد عندها رزقا" أي علما أو قال: صحفا فيها علم رواه ابن أبي حاتم والأول أصح وفيه دلالة على كرامات الأولياء وفي السنة لهذا نظائر كثيرة فإذا رأى زكريا هذا عندها "قال يا مريم أنى لك هذا" أي يقول من أين لك هذا؟ "قالت هو من عند الله إن الله يرزق من يشاء بغير حساب" وقال الحافظ أبو يعلى: حدثنا سهل بن زنجلة حدثنا عبدالله بن صالح حدثنا عبدالله بن لهيعة عن محمد بن المنكدر عن جابر أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم أقام أياما لم يطعم طعاما حتى شق ذلك عليه فطاف في منازل أزواجه فلم يجد عند واحدة منهن شيئا فأتى فاطمة فقال "يا بنية هل عندك شيء آكله فإني جائع؟" قالت: لا والله بأبي أنت وأمي فلما خرج من عندها بعثت إليها جارة لها برغيفين وقطعة لحم فأخذته منها فوضعته في جفنة لها وقالت: والله لأوثرن بهذا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم على نفسي ومن عندي وكانوا جميعا محتاجين إلى شبعة طعام فبعثت حسنا أوحسينا إلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فرجع إليها فقالت: بأبي أنت وأمي قد أتى الله بشيء فخبأته لك قال "هلمي يا بنية" قالت فأتيته بالجفنة فكشفت عنها فإذا هي مملوءة خبزا ولحما فلما نظرت إليها بهت وعرفت أنها بركة من الله فحمدت الله وصليت على نبيه وقدمته إلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فلما رآه حمد الله وقال "من أين لك هذا يا بنية"؟ قالت: يا أبت "هو من عند الله إن الله يرزق من يشاء بغير حساب" فحمد الله وقال "الحمد لله الذي جعلك يا بنية شبيهة بسيدة نساء بني إسرائيل فإنها كانت إذا رزقها الله شيئا وسئلت عنه قالت هو من عند الله إن الله يرزق من يشاء بغير حساب" فبعث رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم إلى علي ثم أكل رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وأكل علي وفاطمة وحسن وحسين وجميع أزواج النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وأهل بيته حتى شبعوا جميعا قالت: وبقيت الجفنة كما هي قالت: فأوسعت ببقيتها على جميع الجيران وجعل الله فيها بركة وخيرا كثيرا.

Maryam Grows Up; Her Honor is with Allah

Allah states that He has accepted Maryam as a result of her mother's vow and that He,

وَأَنبَتَهَا نَبَاتًا حَسَنًا

(made her grow in a good manner) meaning, made her conduct becoming, her mannerism delightful and He made her well liked among people. He also made her accompany the righteous people, so that she learned righteousness, knowledge and religion.

وَكَفَّلَهَا زَكَرِيَّا

(And put her under the care of Zakariyya) meaning, Allah made Zakariyya her sponsor. Allah made Zakariyya Maryam's guardian for her benefit, so that she would learn from his tremendous knowledge and righteous conduct. He was the husband of her maternal aunt, as Ibn Ishaq and Ibn Jarir stated, or her brother-in-law, as mentioned in the Sahih,

«فَإِذَا بِيَحْيَى وَعِيسى، وَهُمَا ابْنَا الْخَالَة»

(I saw John and `Isa, who are maternal cousins.)

We should state that in general terms, what Ibn Ishaq said is plausible, and in this case, Maryam was under the care of her maternal aunt. The Two Sahihs recorded that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ decided that `Amarah, the daughter of Hamzah, be raised by her maternal aunt, the wife of Ja`far bin Abi Talib, saying,

«الْخَالَةُ بِمَنْزِلَةِ الْأُم»

(The maternal aunt is just like the mother.)

Allah then emphasizes Maryam's honor and virtue at the place of worship she attended,

كُلَّمَا دَخَلَ عَلَيْهَا زَكَرِيَّا الْمِحْرَابَ وَجَدَ عِندَهَا رِزْقًا

(Every time he entered the Mihrab to (visit) her, he found her supplied with sustenance.)

Mujahid, `Ikrimah, Sa`id bin Jubayr, Abu Ash-Sha`tha, Ibrahim An-Nakha`i, Ad-Dahhak, Qatadah, Ar-Rabi` bin Anas, `Atiyah Al-`Awfi and As-Suddi said, "He would find with her the fruits of the summer during winter, and the fruits of the winter during summer." When Zakariyya would see this; d

قَالَ يمَرْيَمُ أَنَّى لَكِ هَـذَا

(He said: "O Maryam! From where have you gotten this") meaning, where did you get these fruits from

قَالَتْ هُوَ مِنْ عِندِ اللَّهِ إنَّ اللَّهَ يَرْزُقُ مَن يَشَآءُ بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍ

(She said, "This is from Allah." Verily, Allah provides sustenance to whom He wills, without limit.)

Her Lord accepted the child that is He received Mary from her mother with gracious acceptance and made her grow excellently He made her grow up with excellent character. She would grow in a day by as much as a new-born grew during a year. Her mother took her to the priests the keepers of the Holy House of Jerusalem and said ‘This here before you is the dedication I offered’. They competed for guardianship of her because she was the daughter of their religious leader at which point Zachariah said ‘I am most worthy of her for her maternal aunt lives with me’. The others said ‘No not until we have cast lots’. Thus all twenty nine of them departed to the River Jordan where they cast their quills agreeing that the one whose quill remained fast and floated to the surface of the water would be most worthy of being guardian over her. Zachariah’s quill remained fast and surfaced. He took charge of her and built for her a gallery-room with a ladder in the temple and none apart from him went up to her. He used to bring her food drink and oil and would find her with summer fruits in winter and winter fruits in summer just as God says and Zachariah took charge of her he took her to him a variant reading of kafalahā ‘he took charge of her’ is kaffalahā ‘He God gave Zachariah charge of her’ with Zakariyyā’ or Zakariyyā in the accusative and ‘God’ as the subject of the verb. Whenever Zachariah went into the sanctuary that is the room the most noble seat in the temple where she was he found her with provisions. ‘O Mary’ he said ‘Whence comes this to you?’ She still very young said ‘From God He sends it to me from Paradise’ ‘Truly God provides abundant provision for whomever He will without reckoning’ without consequence.

Commentary

In order to fulfill her vow, Sayyidah Maryam's mother took her to the Mosque of بیت المقدس Baitul-Maqdis and talked to the care-takers and worshippers at the Mosque, Sayyidna Zakariyya (علیہ السلام) being one of them, and. told them that she had vowed to dedicate the child in the service of God and therefore, she could not keep the child with her. She asked them to take her and keep her.

Sayyidna ` Imran (علیہ السلام) was the Imam of this Mosque. He had died during the pregnancy of Maryam's mother, otherwise he would have been the most deserving person to have taken charge of the child, being the father and the Imam of the Mosque. Therefore, every keeper and worshipper of the Mosque wished to take her in his custody. Sayyidna Zakariyya (علیہ السلام) pleaded his bid for custody by saying that his wife was Maryam's aunt and she being next to her mother certainly deserved to keep her. But, people did not agree to prefer him over the others. Finally, everybody agreed to draw lots, which turned out to be fairly strange as it would appear later. Here too, it was Sayyidna Zakariyya (علیہ السلام) who turned out to be the winner.

So, he got custody of Maryam. According to some reports, he employed a wet-nurse to have her suckled. Other reports say that she just did not need to be suckled. She grew up able to sit and walk and Sayyidna Zakariyya (علیہ السلام) put her in a good house adjacent to the Mosque. When he went out, he locked the house and opened it on re-turn. This has been stated briefly in the present verse.
