3:21 Aal-i-Imraan (The Family of Imraan)

هؤلاء الذين أخبر الله عنهم في هذه الآية، أشد الناس جرما وأي: جرم أعظم من الكفر بآيات الله التي تدل دلالة قاطعة على الحق الذي من كفر بها فهو في غاية الكفر والعناد ويقتلون أنبياء الله الذين حقهم أوجب الحقوق على العباد بعد حق الله، الذين أوجب الله طاعتهم والإيمان بهم، وتعزيرهم، وتوقيرهم، ونصرهم وهؤلاء قابلوهم بضد ذلك، ويقتلون أيضا الذين يأمرون الناس بالقسط الذي هو العدل، وهو الأمر بالمعروف والنهي عن المنكر الذي حقيقته إحسان إلى المأمور ونصح له، فقابلوهم شر مقابلة، فاستحقوا بهذه الجنايات المنكرات أشد العقوبات، وهو العذاب المؤلم البالغ في الشدة إلى غاية لا يمكن وصفها، ولا يقدر قدرها المؤلم للأبدان والقلوب والأرواح.

هذا ذم من الله تعالى لأهل الكتاب بما ارتكبوه من المآثم والمحارم في تكذيبهم بآيات الله قديما وحديثا التي بلغتهم إياها الرسل استكبارا عليهم وعنادا لهم وتعاظما على الحق واستنكافا عن اتباعه ومع هذا قتلوا من قتلوا من النبيين حين بلغوهم عن الله شرعه بغير سبب ولا جريمة منهم إليهم إلا لكونهم دعوهم إلى الحق "ويقتلون الذين يأمرون بالقسط من الناس" وهذا هو غاية الكبر كما قال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم "الكبر بطر الحق وغمط الناس". وقال ابن أبي حاتم: حدثنا أبو الزبير الحسن بن علي بن مسلم النيسابوري نزيل مكة حدثني أبو حفص عمر بن حفص يعني ابن ثابت بن زرارة الأنصاري حدثنا محمد بن حمزة حدثنا أبو الحسن مولى لبني أسد عن مكحول عن أبي قبيصة بن ذئب الخزاعي عن أبي عبيدة بن الجراح رضي الله عنه قال: قلت يا رسول الله أي الناس أشد عذابا يوم القيامة؟ قال "رجل قتل نبيا أو من أمر بالمعروف ونهى عن المنكر" ثم قرأ رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم "إن الذين يكفرون بآيات الله ويقتلون النبيين بغير حق ويقتلون الذين يأمرون بالقسط من الناس فبشرهم بعذاب أليم" الآية ثم قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم "يا أبا عبيدة قتلت بنو إسرائيل ثلاثة وأربعين نبيا من أول النهار في ساعة واحدة فقام مائة وسبعون رجلا من بني إسرائيل فأمروا من قتلهم بالمعروف ونهوهم عن المنكر فقتلوهم جميعا من آخر النهار من ذلك اليوم فهم الذين ذكر الله عز وجل" وهكذا رواه ابن جرير عن أبي عبيد الوصابي محمد بن حفص عن ابن حمير عن أبي الحسن مولى بني أسد عن مكحول به وعن عبدالله بن مسعود رضي الله عنه قال: قتلت بنو إسرائيل ثلاثمائة نبي من أول النهار وأقاموا سوق بقلهم من آخره رواه ابن أبي حاتم ولهذا لما أنْ تكبروا عن الحق واستكبروا على الخلق قابلهم الله على ذلك بالذلة والصغار في الدنيا والعذاب المهين في الآخرة فقال تعالى "فبشرهم بعذاب أليم" أي موجع مهين.

Chastising the Jews for Their Disbelief and for Killing the Prophets and Righteous People

This Ayah chastises the People of the Book for the transgression and prohibitions they committed by their denials in the past and more recent times, of Allah's Ayat and the Messengers. They did this due to their defiance and rejection of the Messengers, denial of the truth and refusal to follow it. They also killed many Prophets when they conveyed to them what Allah legislated for them, without cause or criminal behavior committed by these Prophets, for they only called them to the truth,

وَيَقْتُلُونَ الَّذِينَ يَأْمُرُونَ بِالْقِسْطِ مِنَ النَّاسِ

(And kill those men who order just dealings) thus, demonstrating the worst type of arrogance. Indeed, the Prophet said,

«الْكِبْرُ بَطَرُ الْحَقِّ وَغَمْطُ النَّاس»

(Kibr (arrogance) is refusing the truth and degrading people)

This is why when they rejected the truth and acted arrogantly towards the creation, Allah punished them with humiliation and disgrace in this life, and humiliating torment in the Hereafter. Allah said,

فَبَشِّرْهُمْ بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ

(then announce to them a painful torment) meaning, painful and humiliating,

أُولَـئِكَ الَّذِينَ حَبِطَتْ أَعْمَـلُهُمْ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالاٌّخِرَةِ وَمَا لَهُم مِّن نَّـصِرِينَ

(They are those whose works will be lost in this world and in the Hereafter, and they will have no helpers. ).

Those who disbelieve in the signs of God and slay yaqtulūna is also read as yuqātilūna ‘they fight against’ the prophets without right and slay those who enjoin to equity to justice and these are the Jews who are reported to have killed forty–three prophets and to have been forbidden this by a hundred and seventy devout worshippers among them each of whom was killed immediately. So give them good tidings let them know of a painful chastisement. The use of ‘good tidings’ here is meant as a sarcastic ridicule of them the fā’ of fa-bashshirhum so give them good tidings is considered part of the predicate of inna because its noun that is its relative clause resembles a conditional sc. in yakfurūna ‘if they disbelieve…’ fa-bashshirhum ‘then give them good tidings…’.

In the earlier part of the Surah, the text mostly beamed at the Christians. In verse 20, 'those who have been given the Book' includes both Christians and Jews. Now, verses 21-22 here, talk about some of the unusual doings of Jews. Ruh al-Ma'ani while commenting on this verse reports a hadith from the Holy Prophet ﷺ as narrated by Ibn Abi Hatim ؓ . While explaining this verse, he said that Bani Isra'i1 slew forty three prophets at one and the same time. One hundred and seventy pious, elders stood up asking them to uphold justice. They slew them as well on the same day. (Bayan a1-Qura'n)

In verse 21, 'those who disbelieve the verses of Allah' refers to Jews who did not believe in the Injil انجیل and the Qur'an. 'Slay the Prophets (علیہم السلام) unjustly means that they know that they are doing so without justice. 'Those who bid justice' are people who teach moderation in deeds and morals.

Because of this whole set of their terrible deeds, verse 22 says that all their good deeds have gone waste both here and there, and when they are punished, they will find no one to assist them.
