3:18 Aal-i-Imraan (The Family of Imraan)

هذا تقرير من الله تعالى للتوحيد بأعظم الطرق الموجبة له، وهي شهادته تعالى وشهادة خواص الخلق وهم الملائكة وأهل العلم، أما شهادته تعالى فيما أقامه من الحجج والبراهين القاطعة على توحيده، وأنه لا إله إلا هو، فنوع الأدلة في الآفاق والأنفس على هذا الأصل العظيم، ولو لم يكن في ذلك إلا أنه ما قام أحد بتوحيده إلا ونصره على المشرك الجاحد المنكر للتوحيد، وكذلك إنعامه العظيم الذي ما بالعباد من نعمة إلا منه، ولا يدفع النقم إلا هو، والخلق كلهم عاجزون عن المنافع والمضار لأنفسهم ولغيرهم، ففي هذا برهان قاطع على وجوب التوحيد وبطلان الشرك، وأما شهادة الملائكة بذلك فنستفيدها بإخبار الله لنا بذلك وإخبار رسله، وأما شهادة أهل العلم فلأنهم هم المرجع في جميع الأمور الدينية خصوصا في أعظم الأمور وأجلها وأشرفها وهو التوحيد، فكلهم من أولهم إلى آخرهم قد اتفقوا على ذلك ودعوا إليه وبينوا للناس الطرق الموصلة إليه، فوجب على الخلق التزام هذا الأمر المشهود عليه والعمل به، وفي هذا دليل على أن أشرف الأمور علم التوحيد لأن الله شهد به بنفسه وأشهد عليه خواص خلقه، والشهادة لا تكون إلا عن علم ويقين، بمنزلة المشاهدة للبصر، ففيه دليل على أن من لم يصل في علم التوحيد إلى هذه الحالة فليس من أولي العلم. وفي هذه الآية دليل على شرف العلم من وجوه كثيرة، منها: أن الله خصهم بالشهادة على أعظم مشهود عليه دون الناس، ومنها: أن الله قرن شهادتهم بشهادته وشهادة ملائكته، وكفى بذلك فضلا، ومنها: أنه جعلهم أولي العلم، فأضافهم إلى العلم، إذ هم القائمون به المتصفون بصفته، ومنها: أنه تعالى جعلهم شهداء وحجة على الناس، وألزم الناس العمل بالأمر المشهود به، فيكونون هم السبب في ذلك، فيكون كل من عمل بذلك نالهم من أجره، وذلك فضل الله يؤتيه من يشاء، ومنها: أن إشهاده تعالى أهل العلم يتضمن ذلك تزكيتهم وتعديلهم وأنهم أمناء على ما استرعاهم عليه، ولما قرر توحيده قرر عدله، فقال: { قائمًا بالقسط } أي: لم يزل متصفا بالقسط في أفعاله وتدبيره بين عباده، فهو على صراط مستقيم في ما أمر به ونهى عنه، وفيما خلقه وقدره، ثم أعاد تقرير توحيده فقال { لا إله إلا هو العزيز الحكيم } واعلم أن هذا الأصل الذي هو توحيد الله وإفراده بالعبودية قد دلت عليه الأدلة النقلية والأدلة العقلية، حتى صار لذوي البصائر أجلى من الشمس، فأما الأدلة النقلية فكل ما في كتاب الله وسنة رسوله، من الأمر به وتقريره، ومحبة أهله وبغض من لم يقم به وعقوباتهم، وذم الشرك وأهله، فهو من الأدلة النقلية على ذلك، حتى كاد القرآن أن يكون كله أدلة عليه، وأما الأدلة العقلية التي تدرك بمجرد فكر العقل وتصوره للأمور فقد أرشد القرآن إليها ونبه على كثير منها، فمن أعظمها: الاعتراف بربوبية الله، فإن من عرف أنه هو الخالق الرازق المدبر لجميع الأمور أنتج له ذلك أنه هو المعبود الذي لا تنبغي العبادة إلا له، ولما كان هذا من أوضح الأشياء وأعظمها أكثر الله تعالى من الاستدلال به في كتابه. ومن الأدلة العقلية على أن الله هو الذي يؤله دون غيره انفراده بالنعم ودفع النقم، فإن من عرف أن النعم الظاهرة والباطنة القليلة والكثيرة كلها من الله، وأنه ما من نقمة ولا شدة ولا كربة إلا وهو الذي ينفرد بدفعها وإن أحدا من الخلق لا يملك لنفسه - فضلا عن غيره- جلب نعمة ولا دفع نقمة، تيقن أن عبودية ما سوى الله من أبطل الباطل وأن العبودية لا تنبغي إلا لمن انفرد بجلب المصالح ودفع المضار، فلهذا أكثر الله في كتابه من التنبيه على هذا الدليل جدا، ومن الأدلة العقلية أيضا على ذلك: ما أخبر به تعالى عن المعبودات التي عبدت من دونه، بأنها لا تملك نفعا ولا ضرا، ولا تنصر غيرها ولا تنصر نفسها، وسلبها الأسماع والأبصار، وأنها على فرض سماعها لا تغني شيئا، وغير ذلك من الصفات الدالة على نقصها غاية النقص، وما أخبر به عن نفسه العظيمة من الصفات الجليلة والأفعال الجميلة، والقدرة والقهر، وغير ذلك من الصفات التي تعرف بالأدلة السمعية والعقلية، فمن عرف ذلك حق المعرفة عرف أن العبادة لا تليق ولا تحسن إلا بالرب العظيم الذي له الكمال كله، والمجد كله، والحمد كله، والقدرة كلها، والكبرياء كلها، لا بالمخلوقات المدبرات الناقصات الصم البكم الذين لا يعقلون، ومن الأدلة العقلية على ذلك ما شاهده العباد بأبصارهم من قديم الزمان وحديثه، من الإكرام لأهل التوحيد، والإهانة والعقوبة لأهل الشرك، وما ذاك إلا لأن التوحيد جعله الله موصلا إلى كل خير دافعا لكل شر ديني ودنيوي، وجعل الشرك به والكفر سببا للعقوبات الدينية والدنيوية، ولهذا إذا ذكر تعالى قصص الرسل مع أمم المطيعين والعاصين، وأخبر عن عقوبات العاصين ونجاة الرسل ومن تبعهم، قال عقب كل قصة: { إن في ذلك لآية } أي: لعبرة يعتبر بها المعتبرون فيعلمون أن توحيده هو الموجب للنجاة، وتركه هو الموجب للهلاك، فهذه من الأدلة الكبار العقلية النقلية الدالة على هذا الأصل العظيم، وقد أكثر الله منها في كتابه وصرفها ونوعها ليحيى من حي عن بينة، ويهلك من هلك عن بينة فله الحمد والشكر والثناء.

شهد تعالى وكفى به شهيدا وهو أصدق الشاهدين وأعدلهم وأصدق القائلين "أنه لا إله إلا هو" أي المنفرد بالإلهية لجميع الخلائق وأن الجميع عبيده وخلقه وفقراء إليه وهو الغني عما سواه كما قال تعالى "لكن الله يشهد بما أنزل إليك" الآية ثم قرن شهادة ملائكته وأولي العلم بشهادته فقال "شهد الله أنه لا إله إلا هو والملائكة وأولوا العلم" وهذه خصوصية عظيمة للعلماء في هذا المقام "قائما بالقسط" منصوب على الحال وهو في جميع الأحوال كذلك "لا إله إلا هو" تأكيد لما سبق "العزيز الحكيم" العزيز الذي لا يرام جنابه عظمة وكبرياء الحكيم في أقواله وأفعاله وشرعه وقدره وقال الإمام أحمد حدثنا يزيد بن عبد ربه حدثنا بقية بن الوليد حدثني جبير بن عمرو القرشي حدثنا أبو سعيد الأنصاري عن أبي يحيى مولى آل الزبير بن العوام عن الزبير بن العوام قال:سمعت النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وهو بعرفة يقرأ هذه الآية "شهد الله أنه لا إله إلا هو والملائكة وأولوا العلم قائما بالقسط لا إله إلا هو العزيز الحكيم" وأنا على ذلك من الشاهدين يا رب وقد رواه ابن أبي حاتم من وجه آخر فقال:حدثنا علي بن حسين حدثنا محمد بن المتوكل العسقلاني حدثنا عمر بن حفص بن ثابت أبو سعيد الأنصاري حدثنا عبدالملك بن يحيى بن عباد بن عبدالله بن الزبير عن أبيه عن جده عن الزبير قال:سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم حين قرأ هذه الآية "شهد الله أنه لا إله إلا هو والملائكة" قال:قال "وأنا أشهد أي رب" وقال الحافظ أبو القاسم الطبراني في المعجم الكبير حدثنا عبدان بن أحمد وعلي بن سعيد الرازي قالا:حدثنا عمار بن عمر المختار حدثني أبي حدثني غالب القطان قال: أتيت الكوفة في تجارة فنزلت قريبا من الأعمش فلما كانت ليلة أردت أن أنحدر قام فتهجد من الليل فمر بهذه الآية "شهد الله أنه لا إله إلا هو والملائكة وأولوا العلم قائما بالقسط لا إله إلا هو العزيز الحكيم إن الدين عند الله الإسلام" ثم قال الأعمش: وأنا أشهد بما شهد الله به وأستودع الله هذه الشهادة وهي لي عند الله وديعة "إن الدين عند الله الإسلام" قالها مرارا قلت: لقد سمع فيها شيئا فغدوت إليه فودعته ثم قلت يا أبا محمد إني سمعتك تردد هذه الآية قال: أوما بلغك ما فيها قلت: أنا عندك منذ شهر لم تحدثني قال: والله لا أحدثك بها إلى سنة فأقمت سنة فكنت على بابه فلما مضت السنة قلت يا أبا محمد قد مضت السنة قال: حدثني أبو وائل عن عبدالله قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم "يجاء بصاحبها يوم القيامة فيقول الله عز وجل: عبدي عهد إلي وأنا أحق من وفى بالعهد أدخلوا عبدي الجنة".

The Testimony of Tawhid

Allah bears witness, and verily, Allah is sufficient as a Witness, and He is the Most Truthful and Just Witness there is; His statement is the absolute truth,

أَنَّهُ لاَ إِلَـهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ

(that La ilaha illa Huwa) meaning, He Alone is the Lord and God of all creation; everyone and everything are His servants, creation and in need of Him. Allah is the Most Rich, Free from needing anyone or anything. Allah said in another Ayah,

لَّـكِنِ اللَّهُ يَشْهَدُ بِمَآ أَنزَلَ إِلَيْكَ

(But Allah bears witness to that which He has sent down (the Qur'an) unto you (O Muhammad )) 4:166.

Allah then mentioned the testimony of His angels and those who have knowledge after he mentioned His own testimony,

شَهِدَ اللَّهُ أَنَّهُ لاَ إِلَـهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ وَالْمَلَـئِكَةُ وَأُوْلُواْ الْعِلْمِ

(Allah bears witness that none has the right to be worshipped but He), and the angels, and those having knowledge (also bear witness to this)). This Ayah emphasizes the great virtue of those who have knowledge.

قَآئِمَاً بِالْقِسْطِ

((He) maintains His creation in justice) in all that He does,

لاَ إِلَـهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ

(None has the right to be worshipped but He) thus emphasizing this fact,

العَزِيزُ الحَكِيمُ

(the Almighty, the All-Wise.) the Mighty that does not submit to weakness due to His might and greatness, the Wise in all His statements, actions, legislation and decrees.

The Religion with Allah is Islam

Allah said,

إِنَّ الدِّينَ عِندَ اللَّهِ الإِسْلَـمُ

(Truly, the religion with Allah is Islam.) Allah states that there is no religion accepted with Him from any person, except Islam. Islam includes obeying all of the Messengers until Muhammad who finalized their commission, thus closing all paths to Allah except through Muhammad . Therefore, after Allah sent Muhammad , whoever meets Allah following a path other than Muhammad's, it will not be accepted of him. In another Ayah, Allah said,

وَمَن يَبْتَغِ غَيْرَ الإِسْلَـمِ دِينًا فَلَن يُقْبَلَ مِنْهُ

(And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted of him) 3:85.

In this Ayah 3:19, Allah said, asserting that the only religion accepted with Him is Islam,

إِنَّ الدِّينَ عِندَ اللَّهِ الإِسْلَـمُ

(Truly, the religion with Allah is Islam.)

Allah then states that those who were given the Scripture beforehand divided in the religion after Allah sent the Messengers and revealed the Books to them providing them the necessary proofs to not do so. Allah said,

وَمَا اخْتَلَفَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُواْ الْكِتَـبَ إِلاَّ مِن بَعْدِ مَا جَآءَهُمُ الْعِلْمُ بَغْيًا بَيْنَهُمْ

(Those who were given the Scripture (Jews and Christians) did not differ except out of rivalry, after knowledge had come to them.) meaning, some of them wronged others. Therefore, they differed over the truth, out of envy, hatred and enmity for each other. This hatred made some of them defy those whom they hated even if they were correct. Allah then said,

وَمَن يَكْفُرْ بِآيَـتِ اللَّهِ

(And whoever disbelieves in the Ayat of Allah) meaning, whoever rejects what Allah sent down in His Book,

فَإِنَّ اللَّهِ سَرِيعُ الْحِسَابِ

(then surely, Allah is Swift in reckoning.) Allah will punish him for his rejection, reckon him for his denial, and torment him for defying His Book. Thereafter, Allah said.

فَإنْ حَآجُّوكَ

(So if they dispute with you (Muhammad )) so if they argue with you about Tawhid,

فَقُلْ أَسْلَمْتُ وَجْهِىَ للَّهِ وَمَنِ اتَّبَعَنِ

(Say: "I have submitted myself to Allah (in Islam), and (so have) those who follow me") meaning, Say, `I have made my worship sincere for Allah Alone without partners, rivals, offspring or companion,

وَمَنِ اتَّبَعَنِ

(and those who follow me) who followed my religion and embraced my creed.' In another Ayah, Allah said,

قُلْ هَـذِهِ سَبِيلِى أَدْعُو إِلَى اللَّهِ عَلَى بَصِيرَةٍ أَنَاْ وَمَنِ اتَّبَعَنِى

(Say (O Muhammad ): "This is my way; I invite unto Allah with sure knowledge, I and whosoever follows me...") 12:108.

Islam is the Religion of Mankind and the Prophet Was Sent to all Mankind

Allah commanded His servant and Messenger, Muhammad , to call the People of the Two Scriptures and the unlettered idolators to his religion, way, Law and all that Allah sent him with. Allah said,

وَقُلْ لِّلَّذِينَ أُوتُواْ الْكِتَـبَ وَالاٍّمِّيِّينَ ءَأَسْلَمْتُمْ فَإِنْ أَسْلَمُواْ فَقَدِ اهْتَدَواْ وَّإِن تَوَلَّوْاْ فَإِنَّمَا عَلَيْكَ الْبَلَـغُ

(And say to those who were given the Scripture (Jews and Christians) and to those who are illiterates (Arab pagans): "Do you (also) submit yourselves" If they do, they are rightly guided; but if they turn away, your duty is only to convey the Message.) meaning, their reckoning is with Allah and their return and final destination is to Him. It is He Who guides whom He wills and allows whom He wills to stray, and He has the perfect wisdom and the unequivocal proof for all of this. This is why Allah said,

وَاللَّهُ بَصِيرٌ بِالْعِبَادِ

(And Allah sees the servants.) for He has perfect knowledge of who deserves to be guided and who does not deserve to be guided. Verily,

لاَ يُسْأَلُ عَمَّا يَفْعَلُ وَهُمْ يُسْـَلُونَ

(He cannot be questioned for what He does, while they will be questioned.) 21:23 because of His perfect wisdom and mercy. This and similar Ayat are clear proofs that the Message of Muhammad is universal to all creation, as it is well established in the religion, according to the various texts of the Book and Sunnah. For instance, Allah said,

قُلْ يَأَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنِّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ إِلَيْكُمْ جَمِيعًا

(Say (O Muhammad ): "O mankind! Verily, I am sent to you all as the Messenger of Allah.") 7:158, and,

تَبَارَكَ الَّذِى نَزَّلَ الْفُرْقَانَ عَلَى عَبْدِهِ لِيَكُونَ لِلْعَـلَمِينَ نَذِيراً

(Blessed be He Who sent down the criterion to His servant that he may be a warner to the `Alamin (mankind and Jinn).) 25:1.

The Two Sahihs and other collections of Hadith recorded that the Prophet sent letters to the kings of the earth during his time and to different peoples, Arabs and non-Arabs, People of the Book and the unlettered, just as Allah had commanded him. `Abdur-Razzaq recorded that Ma`mar said, that Hammam said that Abu Hurayrah said that the Prophet said,

«وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ، لَا يَسْمَعُ بِي أَحَدٌ مِنْ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ: يَهُودِيٌّ وَلَا نَصْرَانِيٌّ، وَمَاتَ وَلَمْ يُؤْمِنْ بِالَّذِي أُرْسِلْتُ بِهِ، إِلَّا كَانَ مِنْ أَهْلِ النَّار»

(By He in Whose Hand is my soul! No member of this Ummah, no Jew or Christian, hears of me but dies without believing in what I was sent with, but will be among the people of the Fire.) Muslim recorded this Hadith.

The Prophet said,

«بُعِثْتُ إِلَى الْأَحْمَرِ وَالْأَسْوَد»

(I was sent to the red and black. ) and,

«كَانَ النَّبِيُّ يُبْعَثُ إِلى قَوْمِهِ خَاصَّةً، وَبُعِثْتُ إِلَى النَّاسِ عَامَّة»

(A Prophet used to be sent to his people, but I was sent to all mankind.)

God bears witness that is to say He has made it clear to His creation through proofs and signs that there is no god none that is truly worshipped in existence except Him He has borne witness to this and the angels have also borne witness to this by affirming it and those of knowledge from among the prophets and the believers through their conviction and in words; upholding constantly and uniquely maintaining His creations with justice qā’iman ‘upholding’ is in the accusative because it is a circumstantial qualifier and is governed by the import of the statement implied to be something like tafarrada ‘He alone is upholding…’; there is no god except Him He has repeated it for emphasis; the Mighty in His Kingdom the Wise in His actions.

The subject of توحید Tauhid (Oneness of Allah) which began with the opening of Surah 'Al-` Imran reappears in the first verse in a very special manner. Out of the three witnesses mentioned here, the evidence of Allah Almighty is in a figurative sense. It means that the being and the attributes of Allah and the manifestations of His power and creativity all over are open signs of His Oneness. Then there are the Messengers and Books sent by Allah, all confirming. that truth. The second testimony mentioned is that of angels who are close to Allah. They carry out His instructions and bear testimony (knowing and seeing) that Allah alone is worthy of worship.

The third witness is that of the men of knowledge. This expression, ulul` ilm, means the blessed prophets and men who have the knowledge of Islam. Imam al-Ghazali and Ibn Kathir رحمۃ اللہ علیہم find this a matter of great honour for ` Ulama for Allah has mentioned their witness along with His, and that of angels. It is also possible that the term, ulul` ilm (the men of knowledge) may, in an absolute sense, be referring to those who, by conducting an inquiry based on sound intellectual principles, or by deliberating into this universe, could acquire the knowl-edge of the unity of Allah Almighty - even if they are not ` alim or 'men of knowledge' in the traditional sense, whose knowledge is acquired under a formal discipline from Islam's own original sources. The next verse (19) clearly settles that the only faith' (دین din) acceptable to Allah is Islam. Thus, totally excluding any other faith or religion as acceptable to Allah, the verse completes the subject of Allah's Oneness, any opposition to which is doomed.

Related considerations

Merits of the verse meaning "Allah bears witness"

The verse beginning with شَهِدَ اللَّـهُ : 'shahidal-lahhu' has a special elegance. Imam al-Baghawi (رح) ، the renowned mufassir reports that two leading Jewish scholars came to Madinah from Syria. With the township of Madinah before them, they started talking to each other about the looks of the place which matched the prophecy in Torah that the last of the prophets would be living here. Later, they came to know that someone very pious lives here and whom people refer to as the prophet. They went to see the Holy Prophet ﷺ sight of him reminded them of all attributes which Torah had predicted he would have. They presented themselves before him and said: "You are Muhammad?" He said: "Yes." Again, they said: "You are Ahmad?" He said: "Yes, I am Muhammad and Ahmad." Then they said: We are going to ask you a question. If you answer it correctly, we shall embrace Islam." He ﷺ said: "Go ahead and ask." They asked: "Which is the greatest witness in the Book of Allah?" This verse of شَهِدَہ 'shahadah' (witness) was revealed as an answer to this question. He recited it for them. Both of them embraced Islam immediately.

According to a hadith in the Musnad of Ahmad, when the Holy Prophet ﷺ recited this verse in ` Arafat, he said right after that:

و انا علیٰ ذلک من الشٰھدین یا رَبِّ

And to that, 0 my Lord, I too am a witness. (Ibn Kathir)

And a narration from Imam al-A'mash (رح) says: Whoever recites this verse and then says: و انا علیٰ ذلک من الشٰھدین یا رَبِّ ; (And to that, 0 my Lord, I too am a witness), Allah Almighty will say to the angels on the Last Day: 'My servant has made a promise while I am the Foremost to keep a promise when I make it, so let my servant be admitted into Paradise.' (Ibn Kathir)

Another hadith from Sayyidna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari ؓ narrates that the Holy Prophet ﷺ said: 'Whoever recites Ayah al-Kursi (2:255) and the Ayah : شَهِدَ اللَّـهُ Shahidal-lahu (3:18) and قُلِ اللَّـهُمَّ مَالِكَ الْمُلْكِ : Qulil-lahumma malik al-mulki upto بِغَيْرِ‌ حِسَابٍ bighairi hisab (3:26, 27), Allah Almighty will forgive all his sins, admit him to Paradise and take care of seventy (i.e. plenty) of his needs, the simplest of these being his forgiveness.' (Ruh a1-Ma` ani with reference to Dailami)

God bears witness that there is no god but He-and the angels, and the possessors of knowledge-upholding justice; there is no god but He, the Exalted, the Wise. The Real bears witness to the Real that He is the Real. He Himself praised Himself and He Him- self gave witness to Himself concerning His attributes as is worthy of Himself. In His speech He reported of His existence, His self-sufficiency, His self-standingness, and His self-lastingness. He bore witness to the majesty of His measure and the perfection of His exaltedness while there was no refusal, no ignorance, no recognition by any created thing, no intellect, no conformity, no hy- pocrisy, no new arrival, no heaven, no space, no shadows, no brightness. There was no universe and no Adam, no air and no space, no land and no sea, no light and no darkness, no understanding and no virtue, no conformity and no hypocrisy when the Lord of the Worlds spoke in the majesty of His measure and the perfection of His exaltedness, giving witness to His oneness and peerlessness and reporting of His attributes and Essence. Today He is exactly what He was and will be forever. It has never been that He was not, and it will never be that He will not be. He is the First and the Last, the Outward and the Inward. He is the First who always is and who knows the beings and nonbeings. He is the Last who always will be, and He will know what He knew. He is the Outward through His enactorship, dominating over everyone through His all-compellingness and above everything through His greatness. He is too inward for the percep- tion of how, outside the reasoning of imaginations, and pure of supposition, fancy, and being thus. In Your subtle Essence thoughts are bewildered, in Your eternal knowledge hidden things appear. And the angels, and the possessors of knowledge. Great is the eminence of the angels, the prophets, and the knowers, and magnificent the result of their work, that God should join their bearing witness to His bearing witness! This is not because His bearing witness to His unity needs to be joined with bearing witness by created things. No, no, for it is His exaltedness that recognizes Him and His exaltedness that knows His unity.
