3:13 Aal-i-Imraan (The Family of Imraan)

{ قد كان لكم آية } أي: عبرة عظيمة { في فئتين التقتا } وهذا يوم بدر { فئة تقاتل في سبيل الله } وهم الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم وأصحابه { وأخرى كافرة } أي: كفار قريش الذين خرجوا من ديارهم بطرا وفخرا ورئاء الناس، ويصدون عن سبيل الله، فجمع الله بين الطائفتين في بدر، وكان المشركون أضعاف المؤمنين، فلهذا قال { يرونهم مثليهم رأي العين } أي: يرى المؤمنون الكافرين يزيدون عليها زيادة كثيرة، تبلغ المضاعفة وتزيد عليها، وأكد هذا بقوله { رأي العين } فنصر الله المؤمنين وأيدهم بنصره فهزموهم، وقتلوا صناديدهم، وأسروا كثيرا منهم، وما ذاك إلا لأن الله ناصر من نصره، وخاذل من كفر به، ففي هذا عبرة لأولي الأبصار، أي: أصحاب البصائر النافذة والعقول الكاملة، على أن الطائفة المنصورة معها الحق، والأخرى مبطلة، وإلا فلو نظر الناظر إلى مجرد الأسباب الظاهرة والعدد والعدد لجزم بأن غلبة هذه الفئة القليلة لتلك الفئة الكثيرة من أنواع المحالات، ولكن وراء هذا السبب المشاهد بالأبصار سبب أعظم منه لا يدركه إلا أهل البصائر والإيمان بالله والتوكل على الله والثقة بكفايته، وهو نصره وإعزازه لعباده المؤمنين على أعدائه الكافرين.

"قد كان لكم آية" أي قد كان لكم أيها اليهود القائلون ماقلتم آية أي دلالة على أن الله معز دينه وناصر رسوله ومظهر كلمته ومعل أمره" في فئتين" أي طائفتين " التقتا" أي للقتال "فئة تقاتل في سبيل الله وأخرى كافرة" وهم مشركو قريش يوم بدر وقوله "يرونهم مثليهم رأى العين" قال بعض العلماء فيما حكاه ابن جرير يرى المشركون يوم بدر المسلمين مثليهم في العدد رأي أعينهم أي جعل الله ذلك فيما رأوه سببا لنصرة الإسلام عليهم وهذا لا إشكال عليه إلا من جهة واحدة وهي أن المشركين بعثوا عمر بن سعد يومئذ قبل القتال يحزر لهم المسلمين فأخبرهم بأنهم ثلثمائة يزيدون قليلا أو ينقصون قليلا وهكذا كان الأمر. كانوا ثلثمائة وبضعة عشر رجلا ثم لما وقع القتال أمدهم الله بألف من خواص الملائكة وساداتهم. "والقول الثاني" أن المعنى في قوله تعالى "يرونهم مثليهم رأي العين" أي يرى الفئة المسلمة الفئة الكافرة مثليهم أي ضعفيهم في العدد ومع هذا نصرهم الله عليهم وهذا لا إشكال فيه على ما رواه العوفي عن ابن عباس:أن المؤمنين كانوا يوم بدر ثلثمائة وثلاثة عشر رجلا والمشركين كانوا ستمائة وستة وعشرين وكأن هذا القول مأخوذ من ظاهر هذه الآية ولكنه خلاف المشهور عند أهل التواريخ والسير وأيام الناس وخلاف المعروف عند الجمهور أن المشركين كانوا بين تسعمائة إلى ألف كما رواه محمد بن إسحق عن يزيد بن رومان عن عروة بن الزبير أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم لما سأل ذلك العبد الأسود لبني الحجاج عن عدة قريش قال:كثير. قال "كم ينحرون كل يوم"؟ قال:يوما تسعا ويوما عشرا قال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم "القوم ما بين تسعمائة إلى ألف". وروى أبو إسحق السبيعي عن جارية عن علي رضي الله عنه قال:كانوا ألفا وكذا قال ابن مسعود. والمشهور أنهم كانوا ما بين التسعمائة إلى الألف وعلى كل تقدير فقد كانوا ثلاثة أمثال المسلمين وعلى هذا فيشكل هذا القول والله أعلم لكن وجه ابن جرير هذا وجعله صحيحا كما تقول عندي ألف وأنا محتاج إلى مثليها وتكون محتاجا إلى ثلاثة آلاف وكذا قال وعلى هذا فلا إشكال لكن بقي سؤال آخر وهو وارد على القولين وهو أن يقال ما الجمع بين هذه الآية وبين قوله تعالى في قصة بدر "وإذ يريكموهم إذ التقيتم في أعينكم قليلا ويقللكم في أعينهم ليقضي الله أمرا كان مفعولا" فالجواب أن هذا كان في حالة والآخر كان في حالة أخرى كما قال السدي عن الطيب عن ابن مسعود في قوله تعالى "قد كان لكم آية في فئتين التقتا" الآية قال:هذا يوم بدر. قال عبدالله بن مسعود:وقد نظرنا إلى المشركين فرأيناهم يضعفون علينا ثم نظرنا إليهم فما رأيناهم يزيدون علينا رجلا واحدا وذلك قوله تعالى "وإذ يريكموهم إذ التقيتم في أعينكم قليلا ويقللكم في أعينهم" الآية وقال أبو إسحق عن أبي عبدة عن عبدالله بن مسعود قال:لقد قللوا في أعيننا حتى قلت لرجل إلى جانبي:تراهم سبعين قال:أراهم مائة. قال:فأسرنا رجلا منهم فقلنا كم كنتم؟ قال:ألفا فعندما عاين كل من الفريقين الآخر رأى المسلمون المشركين مثليهم أي أكثر منهم بالضعف ليتوكلوا ويتوجهوا ويطلبوا الإعانة من ربهم عز وجل ورأى المشركون المؤمنين كذلك ليحصل لهم الرعب والخوف والجزع والهلع ثم لما حصل التصاف والتقى الفريقان قلل الله هؤلاء في أعين هؤلاء وهؤلاء في أعين هؤلاء ليقدم كل منهما على الآخر "ليقضي الله أمرا كان مفعولا" أي ليفرق بين الحق والباطل فيظهر كلمة الإيمان على الكفر والطغيان ويعز المؤمنين ويذل الكافرين كما قال تعالى "ولقد نصركم الله ببدر وأنتم أذلة" وقال ههنا "والله يؤيد بنصره من يشاء إن في ذلك لعبرة لأولي الأبصار" أي إن في ذلك لعبرة لمن له بصيرة وفهم ليهتدي به إلى حكم الله وأفعاله وقدره الجاري بنصر عباده المؤمنين في هذه الحياة الدنيا ويوم يقوم الأشهاد.

Threatening the Jews With Defeat and Encouraging Them to Learn a Lesson From the Battle of Badr

Allah commanded the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to proclaim to the disbelievers,

سَتُغْلَبُونَ

(You will be defeated) in this life,

وَتُحْشَرُونَ

(And gathered together) on the Day of Resurrection,

إِلَى جَهَنَّمَ وَبِئْسَ الْمِهَادُ

(to Hell, and worst indeed is that place of rest)

Muhammad bin Ishaq bin Yasar recorded that `Asim bin `Umar bin Qatadah said that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gained victory in the battle of Badr and went back to Al-Madinah, he gathered the Jews in the marketplace of Bani Qaynuqa`.

Therefore, Allah said,

قَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ ءَايَةٌ

(There has already been a sign for you) meaning, O Jews, who said what you said! You have an Ayah, meaning proof, that Allah will make His religion prevail, award victory to His Messenger, make His Word apparent and His religion the highest.

فِي فِئَتَيْنِ

(In the two armies) meaning, two camps,

الْتَقَتَا

(that met) in combat (in Badr),

فِئَةٌ تُقَـتِلُ فِى سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ

(One was fighting in the Cause of Allah) the Muslims,

وَأُخْرَى كَافِرَةٌ

(And as for the other, in disbelief) meaning, the idolators of Quraysh at Badr. Allah's statement,

يَرَوْنَهُمْ مِّثْلَيْهِمْ رَأْىَ الْعَيْنِ

(They saw them with their own eyes twice their number) means, the idolators thought that the Muslims were twice as many as they were, for Allah made this illusion a factor in the victory that Islam had over them.

It was said that the meaning of Allah's statement,

يَرَوْنَهُمْ مِّثْلَيْهِمْ رَأْىَ الْعَيْنِ

(They saw them with their own eyes twice their number) is that the Muslims saw twice as many idolators as they were, yet Allah gave them victory over the disbelievers. `Abdullah bin Mas`ud said, "When we looked at the disbelievers' forces, we found that they were twice as many as we were. When we looked at them again, we thought they did not have one man more than we had. So Allah's statement,

وَإِذْ يُرِيكُمُوهُمْ إِذِ الْتَقَيْتُمْ فِى أَعْيُنِكُمْ قَلِيلاً وَيُقَلِّلُكُمْ فِى أَعْيُنِهِمْ

(And (remember) when you met, He showed them to you as few in your eyes and He made you appear as few in their eyes.) 8:44".

When the two camps saw each other, the Muslims thought that the idolators were twice as many as they were, so that they would trust in Allah and seek His help. The idolators thought that the believers were twice as many as they were, so that they would feel fear, horror, fright and despair. When the two camps stood in lines and met in battle, Allah made each camp look smaller in the eyes of the other camp, so that they would be encouraged to fight each other,

لِّيَقْضِيَ اللَّهُ أَمْراً كَانَ مَفْعُولاً

(so that Allah might accomplish a matter already ordained.) 8:42 meaning, so that the truth and falsehood are distinguishable, and thus the word of faith prevails over disbelief and deviation, so that the believers prevail and the disbelievers are humiliated. In a similar statement, Allah said;

وَلَقَدْ نَصَرَكُمُ اللَّهُ بِبَدْرٍ وَأَنتُمْ أَذِلَّةٌ

(And Allah has already made you victorious at Badr, when you were a weak little force) 3:123. In this Ayah 3:13 Allah said,

وَاللَّهُ يُؤَيِّدُ بِنَصْرِهِ مَن يَشَآءُ إِنَّ فِى ذَلِكَ لَعِبْرَةً لاوْلِى الاٌّبْصَـرِ

(And Allah supports with His victory whom He wills. Verily, in this is a lesson for those who understand.) meaning, this should be an example for those who have intelligence and sound comprehension. They should contemplate about Allah's wisdom, decisions and decree, that He gives victory to His believing servants in this life and on the Day the witnesses stand up to testify.

There has already been a sign an example the verb qad kāna ‘there has been’ is used to separate the statement to follow from the previous one for you in two hosts two parties that met one another in battle on the day of Badr; one company fighting in the way of God in obedience to Him namely the Prophet and his Companions who numbered three hundred and thirteen men most of them on foot with two horses six plates of armour and eight swords; and another unbelieving; they the disbelievers numbering almost a thousand saw them the Muslims twice the like of them that is more numerous than themselves as the eye sees in manifest vision witnessing; and God granted them victory despite their fewer number; for God confirms He strengthens with His help whom He will granting him victory. Surely in that which is mentioned is a lesson for people of vision those who are discerning so will you not be warned by this and become believers?

Sequence

In the previous verses, the disbelievers were informed that they will be overcome. Now, cited in this verse is an example of how the prophecy has been fulfilled.

Commentary

This verse refers to the Battle of Badr in which the disbelievers had about 1000 men, 700 camels and 100 horses, while the Muslim mujahidin were just over 300, having a total of 70 camels, 2 horses, 6 armours and 8 swords. The encounter was certainly strange as each combating group saw the opponent being twice its own numbers. The sighting of so many Muslims inspired awe in the hearts of the disbelievers, while Muslims who saw the disbelievers as twice of them turned to Allah more fervently. They had hopes of Allah's help, and ultimate victory, because they had placed their total trust in Allah, were steadfast and sincerely believed in the promise of Allah revealed to them in the following words:

إِن يَكُن مِّنكُمْ أَلْفٌ يَغْلِبُوا أَلْفَيْنِ بِإِذْنِ اللَّـهِ

If there be among you a hundred patient one, they shall over-come two hundred. (8:66)

If the actual number of disbelievers which was three times more than their own were to be realized by Muslims, they may have been overawed. This state of sighting the numbers of the other group as twice its own was at a particular time. At another time each of the two combating groups felt the other one as low in numbers, as it would appear later in Surah al-Anfal.

To sum up, it can be safely said that making a small group of people with very little to fight against a much stronger group and score a victory, as prophesied in Makkah, is an unusual event full of lessons for the observant and the discerning.
