29:45 Al-Ankaboot (The Spider)

يأمر تعالى بتلاوة وحيه وتنزيله، وهو هذا الكتاب العظيم، ومعنى تلاوته اتباعه، بامتثال ما يأمر به، واجتناب ما ينهى عنه، والاهتداء بهداه، وتصديق أخباره، وتدبر معانيه، وتلاوة ألفاظه، فصار تلاوة لفظه جزء المعنى وبعضه، وإذا كان هذا معنى تلاوة الكتاب، علم أن إقامة الدين كله، داخلة في تلاوة الكتاب. فيكون قوله: { وَأَقِمِ الصَّلَاةَ } من باب عطف الخاص على العام، لفضل الصلاة وشرفها، وآثارها الجميلة، وهي { إِنَّ الصَّلَاةَ تَنْهَى عَنِ الْفَحْشَاءِ وَالْمُنْكَرِ } والفحشاء: كل ما استعظم واستفحش من المعاصي التي تشتهيها النفوس.والمنكر: كل معصية تنكرها العقول والفطر.ووجه كون الصلاة تنهى عن الفحشاء والمنكر، أن العبد المقيم لها، المتمم لأركانها وشروطها وخشوعها، يستنير قلبه، ويتطهر فؤاده، ويزداد إيمانه، وتقوى رغبته في الخير، وتقل أو تعدم رغبته في الشر، فبالضرورة، مداومتها والمحافظة عليها على هذا الوجه، تنهى عن الفحشاء والمنكر، فهذا من أعظم مقاصدها وثمراتها. وثَمَّ في الصلاة مقصود أعظم من هذا وأكبر، وهو ما اشتملت عليه من ذكر اللّه، بالقلب واللسان والبدن. فإن اللّه تعالى، إنما خلق الخلق لعبادته، وأفضل عبادة تقع منهم الصلاة، وفيها من عبوديات الجوارح كلها، ما ليس في غيرها، ولهذا قال: { وَلَذِكْرُ اللَّهِ أَكْبَرُ } ويحتمل أنه لما أمر بالصلاة ومدحها، أخبر أن ذكره تعالى خارج الصلاة أكبر من الصلاة، كما هو قول جمهور المفسرين، لكن الأول أولى، لأن الصلاة أفضل من الذكر خارجها، ولأنها -كما تقدم- بنفسها من أكبر الذكر.{ وَاللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ مَا تَصْنَعُونَ } من خير وشر، فيجازيكم على ذلك أكمل الجزاء وأوفاه.

ثم قال تعالى آمرا رسوله والمؤمنين بتلاوة القرآن وهو قراءته وإبلاغه للناس "وأقم الصلاة إن الصلاة تنهى عن الفحشاء والمنكر ولذكر الله أكبر" يعني أن الصلاة تشتمل على شيئين على ترك الفواحش والمنكرات أي مواظبتها تحمل على ترك ذلك وقد جاء في الحديث من رواية عمران وابن عباس مرفوعا "من لم تنهه صلاته عن الفحشاء والمنكر لم تزده من الله إلا بعدا". "ذكر الآثار الواردة في ذلك" قال ابن أبي حاتم حدثنا محمد بن هارون المخرمي الفلاس حدثنا عبدالرحمن بن نافع أبو زياد حدثنا عمر بن أبي عثمان حدثنا الحسن عن عمران بن حصين قال سئل النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم عن قول الله "إن الصلاة تنهي عن الفحشاء والمنكر" قال "من لم تنهه صلاته عن الفحشاء والمنكر فلا صلاة له" وحدثنا علي بن الحسين حدثنا يحيى ابن أبي طلحة اليربوعي حدثنا أبو معاوية عن ليث عن طاوس عن ابن عباس قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم "من لم تنهه صلاته عن الفحشاء والمنكر لم يزدد بها من الله إلا بعدا" رواه الطبراني من حديث أبي معاوية. وقال ابن جرير حدثنا القاسم حدثنا الحسين حدثنا خالد بن عبدالله عن العلاء بن المسيب عمن ذكره عن ابن عباس في قوله "إن الصلاة تنهى عن الفحشاء والمنكر" قال فمن لم تأمره صلاته بالمعروف وتنهاه عن المنكر لم يزدد بصلاته من الله إلا بعدا. فهذا موقوف. قال ابن جرير وحدثنا القاسم حدثنا الحسين حدثنا علي بن هاشم بن البريد عن جويبر عن الضحاك عن ابن مسعود عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم أنه قال "لا صلاة لمن لم يطع الصلاة" وطاعة الصلاة أن تنهاه عن الفحشاء والمنكر. قال: قال سفيان "قالوا يا شعيب أصلاتك تأمرك" قال فقال سفيان إي والله تأمره وتنهاه. وقال ابن أبي حاتم حدثنا أبو سعيد الأشج حدثنا أبو خالد عن جويبر عن الضحاك عن عبدالله قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وقال أبو خالد مرة عن عبدالله "لا صلاة لمن لم يطع الصلاة وطاعة الصلاة تنهاه عن الفحشاء والمنكر" والموقوف أصح كما رواه الأعمش عن مالك بن الحارث عن عبدالرحمن بن يزيد قال قيل لعبدالله إن فلانا يطيل الصلاة قال إن الصلاة لا تنفع إلا من أطاعها: وقال ابن جرير حدثنا علي حدثنا إسماعيل بن مسلم عن الحسن قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم "من صلى صلاة لم تنهه عن الفحشاء والمنكر لم يزدد بها من الله إلا بعدا" والأصح في هذا كله الموقوفات عن ابن مسعود وابن عباس والحسن وقتادة والأعمش وغيرهم والله أعلم. وقال الحافظ أبو بكر البزار حدثنا يوسف بن موسى أنبأنا جرير- يعني ابن عبدالحميد - عن الأعمش عن أبي صالح قال أراه عن جابر شك الأعمش قال: قال رجل للنبي صلى الله عليه وسلم إن فلانا يصلي بالليل فإذا أصبح سرق قال "سينهاه ما تقول" وحدثنا محمد بن موسى الجرشي أخبرنا زياد بن عبدالله عن الأعمش عن أبي صالح عن جابر عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم بنحوه ولم يشك ثم قال: وهذا الحديث قد رواه عن الأعمش غير واحد واختلفوا في إسناده فرواه غير واحد عن الأعمش عن أبي صالح عن أبي هريرة أو غيره وقال قيس عن الأعمش عن أبي سفيان عن جابر قال جرير وزياد عن عبدالله عن الأعمش عن أبي صالح عن جابر وقال الإمام أحمد حدثنا وكيع أخبرنا الأعمش قال أرى أبا صالح عن أبي هريرة قال جاء رجل إلى النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فقال إن فلانا يصلي بالليل فإذا أصبح سرق فقال إنه سينهاه ما تقول". وتشتمل الصلاة أيضا على ذكر الله تعالى وهو المطلوب الأكبر ولهذا قال تعالى "ولذكر الله أكبر" أي أعظم من الأول "والله يعلم ما تصنعون" أي يعلم جميع أعمالكم وأقوالكم. وقال أبو العالية في قوله تعالى "إن الصلاة تنهى عن الفحشاء والمنكر" قال إن الصلاة فيها ثلاث خصال فكل صلاة لا يكـون فيها شيء من هذه الخلال فليست بصلاة. الإخلاص والخشية وذكر الله فالإخلاص يأمره بالمعروف والخشية تنهاه عن المنكر وذكر الله القرآن يأمره وينهاه وقال ابن عون الأنصاري إذا كنت في صلاة فأنت في معروف وقد حجزتك عن الفحشاء والمنكر والذي أنت فيه من ذكر الله أكبر وقال حماد بن أبي سليمان "إن الصلاة تنهي عن الفحشاء والمنكر" يعني ما دمت فيها وقال علي بن أبي طلحة عن ابن عباس في قوله تعالى "ولذكر الله أكبر" يقول ولذكر الله لعباده أكبر إذا ذكروه من ذكرهم إياه وكذا روى غير واحد عن ابن عباس وبه قال مجاهد وغيره: وقال ابن أبي حاتم حدثنا أبو سعيد الأشج حدثنا أبو خالد الأحمر عن داود بن أبي هند عن رجل عن ابن عباس "ولذكر الله أكبر" قال ذكر الله عند طعامك وعند منامك قلت فإن صاحبا لي في المنزل يقول غير الذي تقول قال وأي شيء يقول؟ قلت قال يقول الله تعالى "فاذكروني أذكركم" فلذكر الله إيانا أكبر من ذكرنا إياه قال: صدق: قال وحدثنا أبي حدثنا النفيلى حدثنا إسماعيل عن خالد عن عكرمة عن ابن عباس في قوله تعالى "ولذكر الله أكبر" قال لها وجهان قال ذكر الله عند ما حرمه قال وذكر الله إياكم أعظم من ذكركم إياه وقال ابن جرير حدثني يعقوب بن إبراهيم أخبرنا هشيم أخبرنا عطاء بن السائب عن عبدالله بن ربيعة قال: قال لي ابن عباس هل تدري ما قوله تعالى "ولذكر الله أكبر"؟ قال قلت نعم قال فما هو؟ قلت التسبيح والتحميد والتكبير في الصلاة وقراءة القرآن ونحو ذلك قال لقد قلت قولا عجيبا وما هو كذلك ولكنه إنما يقول ذكر الله إياكم عندما أمر به أو نهى عنه إذا ذكرتموه أكبر من ذكركم إياه وقد روي هذا من غير وجه عن ابن عباس وروي أيضا عن ابن مسعود وأبي الدرداء وسليمان الفارسي وغيرهم واختاره ابن جرير.

لِتُجْزَى كُلُّ نَفْسٍ بِمَا تَسْعَى

(that every person may be rewarded for that which he strives) (20:15).

لِيَجْزِىَ الَّذِينَ أَسَاءُواْ بِمَا عَمِلُواْ وَيِجْزِى الَّذِينَ أَحْسَنُواْ بِالْحُسْنَى

(that He may requite those who do evil with that which they have done, and reward those who do good, with what is best) (53:31).

إِنَّ فِى ذَلِكَ لآيَةً لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

(Verily, therein is surely a sign for those who believe. ) meaning, there is clear evidence that Allah is alone in creating, controlling, and in His divinity.

The Command to convey the Message, to recite the Qur'an and to pray

Then Allah commands His Messenger and the believers to recite the Qur'an, which means both reciting it and conveying it to people.

وَأَقِمِ الصَّلَوةَ إِنَّ الصَّلَوةَ تَنْهَى عَنِ الْفَحْشَآءِ وَالْمُنْكَرِ وَلَذِكْرُ اللَّهِ أَكْبَرُ

(and perform the Salah. Verily, the Salah prevents from Al-Fahsha' and Al-Munkar and the remembrance of Allah is greater indeed.) Prayer includes two things: the first of which is giving up immoral behavior and evil deeds, i.e., praying regularly enables a person to give up these things. Imam Ahmad recorded that Abu Hurayrah said: "A man came to the Prophet and said, `So-and-so prays at night, but when morning comes, he steals.' The Prophet said:

«إِنَّهُ سَيَنْهَاهُ مَا تَقُول»

(What you are saying (i.e., the Salah) will stop him from doing that.)" Prayer also includes the remembering of Allah, which is the higher objective, Allah says:

وَلَذِكْرُ اللَّهِ أَكْبَرُ

(and the remembrance of Allah is greater indeed.) more important than the former.

وَاللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ مَا تَصْنَعُونَ

(And Allah knows what you do.) means, He knows all that you do and say. Abu Al-`Aliyah commented on the Ayah:

إِنَّ الصَّلَوةَ تَنْهَى عَنِ الْفَحْشَآءِ وَالْمُنْكَرِ

(Verily, the Salah prevents from immoral sins and evil wicked deeds) "Prayer has three attributes, and any prayer that contains none of these attributes is not truly prayer: Being done purely and sincerely for Allah alone (Ikhlas), fear of Allah, and remembrance of Allah. Ikhlas makes a person do good deeds, fear prevents him from doing evil deeds, and the remembrance of Allah is the Qur'an which contains commands and prohibitions." Ibn `Awn Al-Ansari said: "When you are praying, you are doing good, it is keeping you away from immoral sins and evil wicked deeds and what you are doing is part of the remembrance of Allah which is greater."

Recite what has been revealed to you of the Book the Qur’ān and maintain prayer; truly prayer prohibits lewd acts and indecency defined as such according to the Law. In other words that is its purpose provided that the person adheres to observance of it. And the remembrance of God is surely greater than other acts of obedience and God knows what you do and He will requite you for them.

Commentary

اتْلُ مَا أُوحِيَ إِلَيْكَ (And recite (0 Muhammad) what is revealed to you - 29:45). In the previous verses some incidents of a few prophets and their people were related, in which some rebellious infidels were also mentioned, who faced various divine punishments. There were also some words of solace for the Holy Prophet ﷺ ، and consolation for the believers, in that how the earlier prophets had endured various types of hardships. There was also persuasion for continuing the work of teaching and preaching, and not to lose heart under any circumstances.

A brief but comprehensive formula for the reform of people

In the above verses the Holy Prophet ﷺ is advised a brief but comprehensive formula for inviting people towards Allah. If acted upon, this formula opens the avenues leading to practicing religion with all its precept, and the natural hurdles that come in the way in practicing it are removed easily. This elixir formula is made up of two parts; one is the recitation of the Holy Qur'an, and the other, establishment of prayers. Although the real object here was to make all people adhere to the two basics, but for the sake of persuasion and emphasis, the Holy Prophet ﷺ was directed first to practice them, because it was much easy for the followers to act upon the teachings of Islam when they saw the Holy Prophet ﷺ practicing it.

Out of the two components of the formula, recitation of Qur'an is the spirit behind and foundation of everything. The next in order is the establishment of prayers, which has been selected for mentioning here to the exclusion of all other acts and obligations. The wisdom behind placing prayer above all other worships has also been explained that it keeps one away from shameless and obscene acts. The prayer is supreme among all the worships and obligations in its own right, and is a pillar to the religion. Fahsha' are all those shameless and obscene acts and utterances that are regarded bad and vile in all societies, no matter Islamic or non-Islamic, for instance, adultery, murder, abduction, robbery, lying, etc. Munkar (translated above as 'evil' ) is that act or utterance on which there is unanimity of opinion of all religious jurists as being impermissible or Haram. Therefore, if there is a difference of opinion by the religious jurists, no one of the two views can be regarded as munkar. The two words, fahasha' and munkar, encompass in them all the crimes, and sins - both open and concealed - which are mischievous by themselves and a great hurdle in the way of righteous deeds.

How does prayer stop from all sins?

According to innumerous authentic ahadith, this verse means that there is a peculiar effect of the establishment of salah (prayer) that whoever performs it stops committing sins, provided it is not offered just for the sake of offering. One should offer prayers strictly in accordance with the wordings of Qur'an, that is for its iqamah (establishment). The meaning of iqamah of Salah is to perform it both inwardly and outwardly with the manners and mores the Holy Prophet ﷺ used to perform. All along his life, he stressed that the body, clothes and the place of offering prayer should be clean. Offering prayer in congregation, and to perform all actions in line with Sunnah are outward mores of the prayer. As for inward mores, one should stand in prayer with fear of Allah and humility in a manner that he is begging from Him. The one who establishes prayer, Allah Ta’ ala graces him with Divine help to tread the righteous path, and to keep away from all types of sins. If someone does not get rid of sins despite offering prayers, then there is some flaw in his prayers. It is mentioned in a hadith reported by Sayyidna ` Imran Ibn Husain ؓ that the Holy Prophet ﷺ was asked about the sense of the verse by إِنَّ الصَّلَاةَ تَنْهَىٰ عَنِ الْفَحْشَاءِ وَالْمُنكَرِ‌ (Surely, Salah restrains from shamelessness and evil - 29:45). The Holy Prophet ﷺ replied, مَن لَّم َتنھَہ عَنِ الفَحشآءِ وَالمُنکَرِ فَلَا صَلوٰۃَ لَہُ (رواہ ابن ابی حاتم بسندہ عن عمران بن حُصَین والطبرابی من حدیث ابی معاویۃ) That is ` if anyone's prayer did not stop him from his sins then his prayer is nothing'.

Sayyidna Ibn Masud ؓ has reported that the Holy Prophet ﷺ once said لَا صلوٰۃ لِمَن لَّم یُطِعِ الصَّلوٰۃ (Ibn Jarir), that is ` one who does not obey his prayer his prayer is nothing'. The obedience of prayer is that one should keep away from sins (fahsha' and munkar).

While interpreting this verse Sayyidna Ibn ` Abbas ؓ has said that if someone's prayer does not make him do the righteous deeds and prevent from sins, then such a prayer would draw him even farther from Allah Ta’ ala.

Ibn Kathir has reproduced all the three narrations in one place and has concluded that these ahadith are not marfu` which means that these words are not the words spoken by the Holy Prophet ﷺ but are the expositions put forward in explaining this verse by the three scholars namely, ` Imran Ibn Husain, ` Abdullah Ibn Masud, Ibn ` Abbas and Sayyidna Abu Hurairah ؓ has reported in a narration that someone came to the Holy Prophet ﷺ and said ` a person offers tahajjud (night

prayer) at night, and steals after the day break'. The Holy Prophet ﷺ replied, ` The prayer will soon desist him from stealing'. (Ibn Kathir) Some other narrations have also related that after this remark from him he stopped stealing.

Answer to a doubt

Some persons express their doubt that many a people offer prayers regularly and yet indulge in grave sins, which apparently looks in conflict with this verse. Some have replied to this doubt by explaining that Salah forbids those offering prayers from sins, but it is not necessary that all take up the advice in right earnest, and stop committing sins. After all Qur'an and hadith also desist everyone from committing sins, yet many do not pay any attention to the advice, and do not refrain from sinning.

But most commentators have explained that the verse is not in the form of a command, but it is the effect of prayer, which desists those who offer their prayers regularly from committing sins, by Divine help. But if one is not graced with the Divine help to get rid of sins, it means that there is some flaw in his prayers, and he has not been able to fulfill the requirements of iqamah of Salah. Above referred ahadith also endorse this view.

وَلَذِكْرُ‌ اللَّـهِ أَكْبَرُ‌ وَاللَّـهُ يَعْلَمُ مَا تَصْنَعُونَ (And indeed remembrance of Allah is the greatest (thing). And Allah knows what you do. - 29:45). Here remembrance of Allah could mean the remembrance carried out in the prayer or otherwise is supreme. The other meaning of the word could be that when His servants remember Him, it is His promise that He too remembers them before angels فَاذْكُرُ‌ونِي أَذْكُرْ‌كُمْ (Remember Me, and I will remember you - 2:152). For the servants who worship Allah it is the biggest blessing. Many a companions and the generation that followed them have endorsed this interpretation. Ibn Jarir and Ibn Kathir رحمۃ اللہ علیہما have also preferred this view. There is also an allusion under this view that the real reason of getting rid of sins through prayers is that Allah Ta’ ala also remembers the servant at that time before the angels. Thus its auspiciousness relieves him from his sins.
