27:62 An-Naml (The Ant)

أي: هل يجيب المضطرب الذي أقلقته الكروب وتعسر عليه المطلوب واضطر للخلاص مما هو فيه إلا الله وحده؟ ومن يكشف السوء أي: البلاء والشر والنقمة إلا الله وحده؟ ومن يجعلكم خلفاء الأرض يمكنكم منها ويمد لكم بالرزق ويوصل إليكم نعمه وتكونون خلفاء من قبلكم كما أنه سيميتكم ويأتي بقوم بعدكم أإله مع الله يفعل هذه الأفعال؟ لا أحد يفعل مع الله شيئا من ذلك حتى بإقراركم أيها المشركون، ولهذا كانوا إذا مسهم الضر دعوا الله مخلصين له الدين لعلمهم أنه وحده المقتدر على دفعه وإزالته، { قَلِيلًا مَا تَذَكَّرُونَ ْ} أي: قليل تذكركم وتدبركم للأمور التي إذا تذكرتموها ادَّكرتم ورجعتم إلى الهدى، ولكن الغفلة والإعراض شامل لكم فلذلك ما أرعويتم ولا اهتديتم.

ينبه تعالى أنه هو المدعو عند الشدائد المرجو عند النوازل كما قال تعالى: "وإذا مسكم الضر في البحر ضل من تدعون إلا إياه" وقال تعالى: "ثم إذا مسكم الضر فإليه تجأرون" وهكذا قال ههنا "أمن يجيب المضطر إذا دعاه" أي من هو الذي لا يلجأ المضطر إلا إليه والذي لا يكشف ضر المضرورين سواه قال الإمام أحمد أنبأنا عفان أنبأنا وهيب أنبأنا خالد الحذاء عن أبي تميمة الهجيمي عن رجل من بلهجيم قال قلت يا رسول الله إلام تدعو؟ قال "أدعو إلى الله وحده الذي إن مسك ضر فدعوته كشف عنك والذي إن أضللت بأرض قفر فدعوته رد عليك والذي إن أصابتك سنة فدعوته أنبت لك" قال قلت أوصني قال "لا تسبن أحدا ولا تزهدن في المعروف ولو أن تلقى أخاك وأنت منبسط إليه وجهك ولو أن تفرغ من دلوك في إناء المستقي واتزر إلى نصف الساق فإن أبيت فإلى الكعبين وإياك وإسبال الإزار فإن إسبال الإزار من المخيلة وإن الله لا يحب المخيلة" وقد رواه الإمام أحمد من وجه آخر فذكر اسم الصحابي فقال: حدثنا عفان حدثنا حماد بن سلمة حدثنا يونس هو ابن عبيد حدثنا عبيدة الهجيمي عن أبيه عن أبي تميمة الهجيمي عن جابر بن سليم الهجيمي قال: أتيت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وهو محتب بشملة وقد وقع هدبها على قدميه فقلت أيكم محمد رسول الله؟ فأومأ بيده إلى نفسه فقلت يا رسول الله أنا من أهل البادية وفي جفاؤهم فأوصني قال "لا تحقرن من المعروف شيئا ولو أن تلقى أخاك ووجهك منبسط ولو أن تفرغ من دلوك في إناء المستقي وإن امرؤ شتمك بما يعلم فيك فلا تشتمه بما تعلم فيه فإنه يكون لك أجره وعليه وزره وإياك وإسبال الإزار فإن إسبال الإزار من المخيلة وإن الله لا يحب المخيلة ولا تسبن أحدا" قال فما سببت بعده أحدا ولا شاة ولا بعيرا وقد روى أبو داود والنسائي لهذا الحديث طرقا وعندهما طرف صالح منه وقال ابن أبي حاتم حدثنا أبي حدثنا علي بن هشام حدثنا عبدة بن نوح عن عمر بن الحجاج عن عبيد الله بن أبي صالح قال: دخل علي طاوس يعودني فقلت له ادع الله لي يا أبا عبد الرحمن فقال ادع لنفسك فإنه يجيب المضطر إذا دعاه وقال وهب بن منبه قرأت في الكتاب الأول إن الله تعالى يقول: بعزتي إنه من اعتصم بي فإن كادته السموات بمن فيهن والأرض بمن فيهن فإني أجعل له من بين ذلك مخرجا ومن لم يعتصم بي فإني أخسف به من تحت قدميه الأرض فأجعله في الهواء فأكله إلى نفسه وذكر الحافظ ابن عساكر في ترجمة رجل حكى عنه أبو بكر محمد بن داود الدينوري المعروف بالدقي الصوفي قال هذا الرجل كنت أكاري على بغل لي من دمشق إلى بلد الزبداني فركب معي ذات مرة رجل فمررنا على بعض الطريق عن طريق غير مسلوكة فقال لي خذ في هذه فإنها أقرب فقلت لا خيرة لي فيها فقال بل هى أقرب فسلكناها فانتهينا إلى مكان وعر وواد عميق وفيه قتلى كثيرة فقال لي امسك رأس البغل حتى أنزل فنزل وتشمر وجمع عليه ثيابه وسل سكينا معه وقصدني ففررت من بين يديه وتبعني فناشدته الله وقلت خذ البغل بما عليه فقال هو لي وإنما أريد قتلك فخوفته الله والعقوبة فلم يقبل فاستسلمت بين يديه وقلت إن رأيت أن تتركني حتى أصلي ركعتين فقال عجل فقمت أصلي فأرتج علي القرآن فلم يحضرني منه حرف واحد فبقيت واقفا متحيرا وهو يقول هيه افرغ فأجرى الله على لساني قوله تعالى: "أمن يجيب المضطر إذا دعاه ويكشف السوء" فإذا أنا بفارس قد أقبل من فم الوادي وبيده حربة فرمى بها الرجل فما أخطأت فؤاده فخر صريعا فتعلقت بالفارس وقلت بالله من أنت؟ فقال أنا رسول الذي يجيب المضطر إذا دعاه ويكشف السوء قال فأخذت البغل والحمل ورجعت سالما وذكر في ترجمة فاطمة بنت الحسن أم أحمد العجيلة قالت هزم الكفار يوما المسلمين في غزاة فوقف جواد جيد بصاحبه وكان من ذوي اليسار ومن الصلحاء فقال للجواد مالك ويلك إنما كنت أعدك لمثل هذا اليوم فقال له الجواد ومالي لا أقصر وأنت تكل العلوفة إلى السواس فيظلمونني ولا يطعمونني إلا القليل؟ فقال لك علي عهد الله أني لا أعلفك بعد هذا اليوم إلا في حجري فجرى الجواد عند ذلك ونجى صاحبه وكان لا يعلفه بعد ذلك إلا في حجره واشتهر أمره بين الناس وجعلوا يقصدونه ليسمعوا منه ذلك وبلغ ملك الروم أمره فقال ما تضام بلدة يكون هذا الرجل فيها واحتال ليحصله في بلده فبعث إليه رجلا من المرتدين عنده فلما انتهى إليه أظهر له أنه قد حسنت نيته في الإسلام وقومه حتى استوثق ثم خرجا يوما يمشيان على جنب الساحل وقد واعد شخصا آخر من جهة ملك الروم ليتساعدا على أسره فلما اكتنفاه ليأخذاه رفع طرفه إلى السماء وقال اللهم إنه إنما خدعني بك فاكفنيهما بما شئت قال فخرج سبعان فأخذاهما ورجع الرجل سالما وقوله تعالى: "ويجعلكم خلفاء الأرض" أي يخلف قرنا لقرن قبلهم وخلفا لسلف كما قال تعالى: "إن يشأ يذهبكم ويستخلف من بعدكم ما يشاء كما أنشأكم من ذرية قوم آخرين" وقال تعالى "وهو الذي جعلكم خلائف الأرض ورفع بعضكم فوق بعض درجات" وقال تعالى: "وإذ قال ربك للملائكة إني جاعل فى الأرض خليفة" أي قوما يخلف بعضهم بعضا كما قدمنا تقريره وهكذا هذه الآية "ويجعلكم خلفاء الأرض" أي أمة بعد أمة وجيلا بعد جيل وقوما بعد قوم ولو شاء لأوجدهم كلهم في وقت واحد ولم يجعل بعضهم من ذرية بعض بل لو شاء لخلقهم كلهم أجمعين كما خلق آدم من تراب ولو شاء أن يجعلهم بعضهم من ذرية بعض ولكن لا يميت أحدا حتى تكون وفاة الجميع في وقت واحد لكانت تضيق عنهم الأرض وتضيق عليهم معايشهم وأكسابهم ويتضرر بعضهم ببعض ولكن اقتضت حكمته وقدرته أن يخلقهم من نفس واحدة ثم يكثرهم غاية الكثرة ويذرأهم في الأرض ويجعلهم قرون بعد قرون وأمما بعد أمم حتى ينقضي الأجل وتفرغ البرية كما قدر ذلك تبارك وتعالى وكما أحصاهم وعدهم عدا ثم يقيم القيامة ويوفي كل عامل عمله إذا بلغ الكتاب أجله ولهذا قال تعالى: "أمن يجيب المضطر إذا دعاه ويكشف السوء ويجعلكم خلفاء الأرض أإله مع الله" أي يقدر على ذلك أو أإله مع الله يعبد؟ وقد علم أن الله هو المتفرد بفعل ذلك وحده لا شريك له؟ " قليلا ما تذكرون" أي ما أقل تذكرهم فيما يرشدهم إلى الحق ويهديهم إلى الصراط المستقيم.

وَإِذَا مَسَّكُمُ الْضُّرُّ فِى الْبَحْرِ ضَلَّ مَن تَدْعُونَ إِلاَ إِيَّاهُ

(And when harm touches you upon the sea, those that you call upon vanish from you except Him) (17:67),

ثُمَّ إِذَا مَسَّكُمُ الضُّرُّ فَإِلَيْهِ تَجْـَرُونَ

(Then, when harm touches you, unto Him you cry aloud for help) (16:53). Similarly, Allah says here:

أَمَّن يُجِيبُ الْمُضْطَرَّ إِذَا دَعَاهُ

(Is not He Who responds to the distressed one, when he calls on Him,) meaning, Who is the only One to Whom the person in desperate need turns, and the only One Who can relieve those who are stricken by harm Imam Ahmad reported that a man of Balhajim said: "O Messenger of Allah, what are you calling for" He said:

«أَدْعُو إِلَى اللهِ وَحْدَهُ الَّذِي إِنْ مَسَّكَ ضُرٌّ فَدَعَوْتَهُ كَشَفَ عَنْكَ، وَالَّذِي إِنْ أَضْلَلْتَ بِأَرْضٍ قَفْرٍ فَدَعَوْتَهُ رَدَّ عَلَيْكَ، وَالَّذِي إِنْ أَصَابَتْكَ سَنَةٌ فَدَعَوْتَهُ أَنْبَتَ لَك»

(I am calling people to Allah Alone, the One Who, if you call on Him when harm befalls you, will relieve you; and when you are lost in the wilderness, you call on Him and He brings you back: and when drought (famine) strikes, you call on Him and He makes your crops grow.) He said: "Advise me." He said:

«لَا تَسُبَّنَّ أَحَدًا وَلَا تَزْهَدَنَّ فِي الْمَعْرُوفِ، وَلَوْ أَنْ تَلْقَى أَخَاكَ وَأَنْتَ مُنْبَسِطٌ إِلَيْهِ وَجْهُكَ، وَلَوْ أَنْ تُفْرغَ مِنْ دَلْوِكَ فِي إِنَاءِ الْمُسْتَقِي، وَاتَّزِرْ إِلَى نِصْفِ السَّاقِ فَإِنْ أَبَيْتَ فَإِلَى الْكَعْبَيْنِ، وَإِيَّاكَ وَإِسْبَالَ الْإِزَارِ فَإِنَّ إِسْبَالَ الْإِزَارِ مِنَ الْمَخِيلَةِ وَإِنَّ اللهَ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمَخِيلَة»

(Do not slander anyone and do not think of any good deed as insignificant, even if it is only meeting your brother with a cheerful face or emptying your vessel into the vessel of one who is asking for water. Wear your lower garment at mid-calf length, or -- if you insist -- let it reach your ankles, and beware of lowering the garment below the ankles along the ground, for it is a form of showing-off, and Allah does not like showing-off.)

The Story of a Mujahid who fought for the sake of Allah

In his biography of Fatimah bint Al-Hasan Umm Ahmad Al-`Ajaliyyah, Al-Hafiz bin `Asakir reported that she said: "One day the disbelievers defeated the Muslims in a battle. There was a good horse which belonged to a rich man who was also righteous. The horse just stood there, so its owner said, `What is the matter with you Woe to you! I was only preparing you for a day such as this.' The horse said to him: `How can you expect me not to perform badly, when you delegated my feeding to the grooms, and they mistreated me and only fed me a little' The man said, `I make you a promise before Allah that from this day on, only I will feed you from my own lap.' So the horse began to run, and his owner was saved, and after that he only ever fed the horse from his own lap. This story became well known among the people, and they started to come to him to hear the story from his own lips. News of this reached the king of Byzantium, and he said: `A city where this man is, will be kept safe from harm.' He wanted to bring the man to his own city, so he sent an apostate (a man who had left Islam) who was living in his city to go to him, and when he reached him, he pretended that his intentions towards Islam and its followers were good, so the Mujahid trusted him. One day they went out walking along the shore, but the apostate made a pact with another person, a follower of the Byzantine king, to come and help him take the Mujahid prisoner. When they made their move, he lifted his gaze to the sky and said, `O Allah! He has deceived me by swearing in Your Name, so protect me in whatever way You will.' Then two wild animals came out and seized them, and the Mujahid came back safe and sound. " The Inheritance of the Earth

وَيَجْعَلُكُمْ حُلَفَآءَ الاٌّرْضِ

(and makes you inheritors of the earth,) means, each generation inherits from the generation that came before them, one after the other, as Allah says:

إِن يَشَأْ يُذْهِبْكُمْ وَيَسْتَخْلِفْ مِن بَعْدِكُم مَّا يَشَآءُ كَمَآ أَنشَأَكُمْ مِّن ذُرِّيَّةِ قَوْمٍ ءَاخَرِينَ

(if He wills, He can destroy you, and in your place make whom He wills as your successors, as He raised you from the seed of other people) (6:133),

وَهُوَ الَّذِى جَعَلَكُمْ خَلَـئِفَ الاٌّرْضِ وَرَفَعَ بَعْضَكُمْ فَوْقَ بَعْضٍ دَرَجَـتٍ

(And it is He Who has made you generations coming after generations, replacing each other on the earth. And He has raised you in ranks, some above others) (6:165),

وَإِذْ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلْمَلَـئِكَةِ إِنِّي جَاعِلٌ فِى الأَرْضِ خَلِيفَةً

(And (remember) when your Lord said to the angels: "Verily, I am going to place generations after generations on earth.") (2:30) meaning, people who will come after one another, as we have already stated. Allah's saying:

وَيَجْعَلُكُمْ حُلَفَآءَ الاٌّرْضِ

(and makes you inheritors of the earth,) means, nation after nation, generation after generation, people after people. If He had willed, He could have created them all at one time, and not made some of them the offspring of others. If He had willed, He could have created them all together, as He created Adam from dust. If He had willed, He could have made some of them the offspring of others, but not caused any of them to die until they all died at one time; in this case the earth would have become constricted for them and it would be too difficult for them to live and earn a living, and they would have caused inconvenience and harm to one another. But His wisdom and decree ruled that they should be created from one soul, then their numbers should be greatly increased, so He created them on the earth and made them generation after generation, nation after nation, until their time will come to an end and there will be no one left on earth, as Allah has decreed and as He has completely counted out their numbers. Then the Resurrection will come to pass, and each person will be rewarded or punished according to his deeds. Allah says:

أَمَّن يُجِيبُ الْمُضْطَرَّ إِذَا دَعَاهُ وَيَكْشِفُ السُّوءَ وَيَجْعَلُكُمْ حُلَفَآءَ الاٌّرْضِ أَءِلَـهٌ مَّعَ اللَّهِ

(Is not He Who responds to the distressed one, when he calls on Him, and Who removes the evil, and makes you inheritors of the earth, generations after generations Is there any god with Allah) meaning, is there anyone else able to do that, or a god with Allah worth worshipping -- while you know that He is the only one who can do that, having no partners

قَلِيلاً مَّا تَذَكَّرُونَ

(Little is that you remember!) meaning, how little they think about that which would guide them to the truth and show them the straight path.

Or He Who answers the desperate one the anguished person suffering harm when he calls to Him and Who removes his distress from him and from others and makes you successors in the earth the annexation khulafā’a l-ardi ‘successors of the earth’ has the same meaning as fī ‘in’ khulafā’a fī’l-ardi ‘successors in the earth’ in other words each generation succeeding the one before it. Is there a god with God? Little do you remember little are you admonished read mā tadhakkarūna ‘do you remember’; or read yadhdhakkarūna ‘do they remember’ where in both cases the tā’ has been assimilated with the dhāl; the mā is extra used to make less what is already ‘little’.

Commentary

أَمَّن يُجِيبُ الْمُضْطَرَّ‌ إِذَا دَعَاهُ وَيَكْشِفُ السُّوءَ

(Or the One who responds to a helpless when he prays to Him and removes distress - 27:62)

Word الْمُضْطَرَّ‌ (Mudtar) is derived from اِضطِرَار (Idtirar), which means to be helpless and restless under some necessity, and that happens when someone does not have any support and friends. Hence, مُضْطَرَّ‌Mudtar is that person who has lost all hopes from everyone and has turned to Allah as the sole redresser of his woes. This explanation of Mudtar is adopted by Suddi, Dhun-nun Al-Misri, Sahl ibn ` Abdullah etc. (Qurtubi). The Holy Prophet ﷺ has advised that such a person should supplicate in the following manner.

اللَّھُمَّ رحمَتَکَ اَرجُوا، فلا تَکِلنِی اِلٰی نَفسِی طَرفَۃَ عَین، وَاَصلِح لِی شَأنِی کُلَّہُ ، لَآ اِلٰہَ اِلَّا اَنتَ

` O Allah, I am an aspirant of your grace. So, please do not leave me at the mercy of myself for a moment, and set right all my matters on Your own. There is no god except You'. (Qurtubi)

Supplication of a Mudtar is surely accepted because of its sincerity

Imam Qurtubi (رح) has said that Allah Ta` ala has taken upon Himself to accept the supplication of a Mudtar. He has made declaration to this effect in this verse. The main reason for it is that by divorcing all mundane supports and connections, beseeching from Allah, while regarding Him as the sole redresser is the sincerity at its best. Sincerity has a special position before Allah Taala. Whoever evinces sincerity, no matter if he is a believer or an infidel, a pious or a sinner, because of the auspiciousness of sincerity the divine favour gets attentive towards him. Allah Ta` ala Himself elaborates this point while describing the traits of the infidels. He has said that when they are in water and the boat is caught in storm, and they are sure of their death, they call out to Allah with all sincerity, saying that they would be thankful to Him forever if He would save their lives. But when Allah Ta` ala rescues them and brings them to land by accepting their supplication, they again indulge in associating Him with gods دَعَوُا اللَّـهَ مُخْلِصِينَ لَهُ الدِّينَ فَلَمَّا نَجَّاهُمْ إِلَى الْبَرِّ‌ إِذَا هُمْ يُشْرِ‌كُونَ.

A Sahih hadith of the Holy Prophet ﷺ says that ` Three supplications are surely accepted, in which there is no room for doubt. One, from an oppressed person, two, by a traveler, and three, from a father against his children'. After citing this hadith, Qurtubi has commented that in all these three cases the situation is the same as the supplication of a Mudtar, because when an oppressed person calls Allah after having been frustrated from mundane support and help, his condition is no different than that of a MOW. Similarly, a traveler is away from his dear ones, hence helpless, while in journey. Likewise, a father cannot plead for something against his children because of his paternal love and affection for them, unless he is totally dejected and heart-broken, and calls Allah to save himself from the misery of sufferings. ` Ajurri, a scholar of hadith, has quoted on the authority of Sayyidna Abu Dharr4 that the Holy Prophet ﷺ said ` Allah Ta` ala has pronounced that He shall never reject an appeal from an oppressed person, even if it is made by an infidel'. (Qurtubi) If a Mudtar or an oppressed person or a traveler has a feeling that his appeal to Allah has not been accepted, he should not be dejected and be skeptical, because sometimes the request is accepted but its manifestation is delayed due to some expediency and divine wisdom. As an alternative, such a person should search his soul to find out if there was any deficiency in his sincerity or concentration while praying to Allah Ta` ala.
