23:24 Al-Muminoon (The Believers)

{ فَقَالَ الْمَلَأُ } من قومه الأشراف والسادة المتبوعون -على وجه المعارضة لنبيهم نوح، والتحذير من اتباعه -: { مَا هَذَا إِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِثْلُكُمْ يُرِيدُ أَنْ يَتَفَضَّلَ عَلَيْكُمْ } أي: ما هذا إلا بشر مثلكم، قصده حين ادعى النبوة أن يزيد عليكم فضيلة، ليكون متبوعا، وإلا فما الذي يفضله عليكم، وهو من جنسكم؟ وهذه المعارضة لا زالت موجودة في مكذبي الرسل، وقد أجاب الله عنها بجواب شاف، على ألسنة رسله كما في قوله: { قالوا } أي: لرسلهم { إِنْ أَنْتُمْ إِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِثْلُنَا تُرِيدُونَ أَنْ تَصُدُّونَا عَمَّا كَانَ يَعْبُدُ آبَاؤُنَا فَأْتُونَا بِسُلْطَانٍ مُبِينٍ* قَالَتْ لَهُمْ رُسُلُهُمْ إِنْ نَحْنُ إِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِثْلُكُمْ وَلَكِنَّ اللَّهَ يَمُنُّ عَلَى مَنْ يَشَاءُ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ } فأخبروا أن هذا فضل الله ومنته، فليس لكم أن تحجروا على الله، وتمنعوه من إيصال فضله علينا. وقالوا هنا: { ولو شاء الله لأنزل ملائكة } وهذه أيضا معارضة بالمشيئة باطلة، فإنه وإن كان لو شاء لأنزل ملائكة، فإنه حكيم رحيم، حكمته ورحمته تقتضي أن يكون الرسول من جنس الآدميين، لأن الملك لا قدرة لهم على مخاطبته، ولا يمكن أن يكون إلا بصورة رجل، ثم يعود اللبس عليهم كما كان. وقولهم: { مَا سَمِعْنَا بِهَذَا } أي بإرسال الرسول { فِي آبَائِنَا الْأَوَّلِينَ } وأي حجة في عدم سماعهم إرسال رسول في آبائهم الأولين؟ لأنهم لم يحيطوا علما بما تقدم، فلا يجعلوا جهلهم حجة لهم، وعلى تقدير أنه لم يرسل فيهم رسولا، فإما أن يكونوا على الهدى، فلا حاجة لإرسال الرسول إذ ذاك، وإما أن يكونوا على غيره، فليحمدوا ربهم ويشكروه أن خصهم بنعمة لم تأت آباءهم، ولا شعروا بها، ولا يجعلوا عدم الإحسان على غيرهم سببا لكفرهم للإحسان إليهم.

فقال الملأ وهم السادة والأكابر منهم " ما هذا إلا بشر مثلكم يريد أن يتفضل عليكم " يعنون يترفع عليكم ويتعاظم بدعوى النبوة وهو بشر مثلكم فكيف أوحي إليه دونكم " ولو شاء الله لأنزل ملائكة " أي لو أراد أن يبعث نبيا لبعث ملكا من عنده ولم يكن بشرا ما سمعنا بهذا أي ببعثة البشر في آبائنا الأولين يعنون بهذا أسلافهم وأجدادهم في الدهور الماضية.

The Story of Nuh, Peace be upon Him; and his people

Allah tells us about Nuh, peace be upon him, whom He sent him to his people to warn them of the severe punishment of Allah and His severe vengeance on those who associated partners with Him, defied His commands and disbelieved His Messengers:

فَقَالَ يَقَوْمِ اعْبُدُواْ اللَّهَ مَا لَكُمْ مِّنْ إِلَـهٍ غَيْرُهُ أَفَلاَ تَتَّقُونَ

(and he said: "O my people! Worship Allah! You have no other God but Him. Will you not then have Taqwa") Meaning, "Do you not fear Allah when you associate others in worship with Him" The chiefs or leaders of his people said:

مَا هَـذَا إِلاَّ بَشَرٌ مِّثْلُكُمْ يُرِيدُ أَن يَتَفَضَّلَ عَلَيْكُمْ

(He is no more than a human being like you, he seeks to make himself superior to you.) meaning, `he is putting himself above you and trying to make himself great by claiming to be a Prophet, but he is a human being like you, so how can he receive revelation when you do not'

وَلَوْ شَآءَ اللَّهُ لاّنزَلَ مَلَـئِكَةً

(Had Allah willed, He surely could have sent down angels.) meaning, `if Allah had wanted to send a Prophet, He would have sent an angel from Him, not a human being. We have never heard of such a thing -- i.e., sending a man to our forefathers' -- their predecessors in times past.

إِنْ هُوَ إِلاَّ رَجُلٌ بِهِ جِنَّةٌ

(He is only a man in whom is madness,) means, `he is crazy in his claim that Allah has sent him and chosen him from among you to receive revelation.'

فَتَرَبَّصُواْ بِهِ حَتَّى حِينٍ

(so wait for him a while.) means, `wait until he dies, put up with him until you are rid of him.'

But the council of his people who disbelieved said to their followers ‘This is just a human being like you who desires to gain superiority to have the honour over you by acquiring followers you being his followers. And had God willed that none other than Him be worshipped He would have sent down angels with that Message and not assigned a human being for it. We never heard of such an affirmation of God’s Oneness as that which Noah summons us among our forefathers among past communities.

In the last benefit, ships and boats are also included, because they are also used in transportation وَعَلَيْهَا وَعَلَى الْفُلْكِ تُحْمَلُونَ (And on them and on the boats you are transported - 23:22). All types of mounts which are run with wheels may also be added to fulk (boats) because they render the same service.
