22:5 Al-Hajj (The Pilgrimage)

يقول تعالى: { يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ فِي رَيْبٍ مِنَ الْبَعْثِ } أي: شك واشتباه، وعدم علم بوقوعه، مع أن الواجب عليكم أن تصدقوا ربكم، وتصدقوا رسله في ذلك، ولكن إذا أبيتم إلا الريب، فهاكم دليلين عقليين تشاهدونهما، كل واحد منهما، يدل دلالة قطعية على ما شككتم فيه، ويزيل عن قلوبكم الريب. أحدهما: الاستدلال بابتداء خلق الإنسان، وأن الذي ابتدأه سيعيده، فقال فيه: { فَإِنَّا خَلَقْنَاكُمْ مِنْ تُرَابٍ } وذلك بخلق أبي البشر آدم عليه السلام، { ثُمَّ مِنْ نُطْفَةٍ } أي: مني، وهذا ابتداء أول التخليق، { ثُمَّ مِنْ عَلَقَةٍ } أي: تنقلب تلك النطفة، بإذن الله دما أحمر، { ثُمَّ مِنْ مُضْغَةٍ } أي: ينتقل الدم مضغة، أي: قطعة لحم، بقدر ما يمضغ، وتلك المضغة تارة تكون { مُخَلَّقَةٍ } أي: مصور منها خلق الآدمي، { وَغَيْرِ مُخَلَّقَةٍ } تارة، بأن تقذفها الأرحام قبل تخليقها، { لِنُبَيِّنَ لَكُمْ } أصل نشأتكم، مع قدرته تعالى، على تكميل خلقه في لحظة واحدة، ولكن ليبين لنا كمال حكمته، وعظيم قدرته، وسعة رحمته. { وَنُقِرُّ فِي الْأَرْحَامِ مَا نَشَاءُ إِلَى أَجَلٍ مُسَمًّى } أي : ونقر، أي: نبقي في الأرحام من الحمل، الذي لم تقذفه الأرحام، ما نشاء إبقاءه إلى أجل مسمى، وهو مدة الحمل. { ثُمَّ نُخْرِجُكُمْ } من بطون أمهاتكم { طِفْلًا } لا تعلمون شيئا، وليس لكم قدرة، وسخرنا لكم الأمهات، وأجرينا لكم في ثديها الرزق، ثم تنتقلون طورا بعد طور، حتى تبلغوا أشدكم، وهو كمال القوة والعقل. { وَمِنْكُمْ مَنْ يُتَوَفَّى } من قبل أن يبلغ سن الأشد، ومنكم من يتجاوزه فيرد إلى أرذل العمر، أي: أخسه وأرذله، وهو سن الهرم والتخريف، الذي به يزول العقل، ويضمحل، كما زالت باقي القوة، وضعفت. { لِكَيْلَا يَعْلَمَ مِنْ بَعْدِ عِلْمٍ شَيْئًا } أي: لأجل أن لا يعلم هذا المعمر شيئا مما كان يعلمه قبل ذلك، وذلك لضعف عقله، فقوة الآدمي محفوفة بضعفين، ضعف الطفولية ونقصها، وضعف الهرم ونقصه، كما قال تعالى: { اللَّهُ الَّذِي خَلَقَكُمْ مِنْ ضَعْفٍ ثُمَّ جَعَلَ مِنْ بَعْدِ ضَعْفٍ قُوَّةً ثُمَّ جَعَلَ مِنْ بَعْدِ قُوَّةٍ ضَعْفًا وَشَيْبَةً يَخْلُقُ مَا يَشَاءُ وَهُوَ الْعَلِيمُ الْقَدِيرُ } والدليل الثاني، إحياء الأرض بعد موتها، فقال الله فيه: { وَتَرَى الْأَرْضَ هَامِدَةً } أي: خاشعة مغبرة لا نبات فيها، ولا خضر، { فَإِذَا أَنْزَلْنَا عَلَيْهَا الْمَاءَ اهْتَزَّتْ } أي: تحركت بالنبات { وَرَبَتْ } أي: ارتفعت بعد خشوعها وذلك لزيادة نباتها، { وَأَنْبَتَتْ مِنْ كُلِّ زَوْجٍ } أي: صنف من أصناف النبات { بَهِيجٍ } أي: يبهج الناظرين، ويسر المتأملين، فهذان الدليلان القاطعان، يدلان على هذه المطالب الخمسة، وهي هذه.

لما ذكر تعالى المخالف للبعث المنكر للمعاد ذكر تعالى الدليل على قدرته تعالى على المعاد بما يشاهد من بدئه للخلق فقال " يا أيها الناس إن كنتم في ريب " أي في شك " من البعث " وهو المعاد وقيام الأرواح والأجساد يوم القيامة " فإنا خلقناكم من تراب " أي أصل برئه لكم من تراب وهو الذي خلق منه آدم عليه السلام " ثم من نطفة " أي ثم جعل نسله من سلالة من ماء مهين " ثم من علقة ثم من مضغة " وذلك أنه إذا استقرت النطفة في رحم المرأة مكثت أربعين يوما كذلك يضاف إليه ما يجتمع إليها ثم تنقلب علقة حمراء بإذن الله فتمكث كذلك أربعين يوما ثم تستحيل فتصير مضغة قطعة من لحم لا شكل فيما ولا تخطيط ثم يشرع في التشكيل والتخطيط فيصور منها رأس ويدان وصدر وبطن وفخذان ورجلان وسائر الأعضاء فتارة تسقطها المرأة قبل التشكيل والتخطيط وتارة تلقيها وقد صارت ذات شكل وتخطيط ولهذا قال تعالى " ثم من مضغة مخلقة وغير مخلقة " أي كما تشاهدونها " لنبين لكم ونقر في الأرحام ما نشاء إلى أجل مسمى " أي وتارة تستقر في الرحم لا تلقيها المرأة ولا تسقطها كما قال مجاهد في قوله تعالى " مخلقة وغير مخلقة " قال هو السقط مخلوق وغير مخلوق فإذا مضى عليها أربعون يوما وثم مضغة أرسل الله تعالى إليها ملكا فنفخ فيها الروح وسواها كما يشاء الله عز وجل من حسن وقبح وذكر وأنثى وكتب رزقها وأجلها وشقي أو سعيد كما ثبت في الصحيحين من حديث الأعمش عن زيد بن وهب عن ابن مسعود قال حدثنا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وهو الصادق المصدوق " إن خلق أحدكم يجمع في بطن أمه أربعين ليلة ثم يكون علقة مثل ذلك ثم يكون مضغة مثل ذلك ثم يبعث الله إليه الملك فيؤمر بأربع كلمات فيكتب رزقه وعمله وأجله وشقي أو سعيد ثم ينفخ فيه الروح " وروى ابن أبي حاتم وابن جرير من حديث داود بن أبي هند عن الشعبي عن علقمة عن عبدالله قال: النطفة إذا استقرت في الرحم جاءها ملك بكفه فقال يا رب مخلقة أو غير مخلقة فإن قيل غير مخلقة لم تكن نسمة وقذفتها الأرحام دما وإن قيل مخلقة قال أي رب ذكرا أو أنثى شقي أو سعيد ما الأجل وما الأثر وبأي أرض يموت. قال فيقال للنطفة من ربك ؟ فتقول الله فيقال من رازقك ؟ فتقول الله فيقال له اذهب إلى الكتاب فإنك ستجد فيه فصة هذه النطفة قال فتخلق فتعيش في أجلها وتأكل رزفها وتطأ أثرها حتى إذا جاء أجلها ماتت فدفنت في ذلك ثم تلا عامر الشعبي " يا أيها الناس إن كنتم في ريب من البعث فإنا خلقناكم من تراب ثم من نطفة ثم من علقة ثم من مضغة مخلقة وغير مخلقة " فإذا بلغت مضغة نكست في الخلق الرابع فكانت نسمة وإن كانت غير مخلقة قذفتها الأرحام دما وإن كانت مخلقة نكست نسمة. وقال ابن أبي حاتم حدثنا محمد بن عبدالله بن يزيد المقري حدثنا سفيان عن عمرو بن دينار عن أبي الطفيل عن حذيفة بن أسيد يبلغ به النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال " يدخل الملك على النطفة بعد ما تستقر في الرحم بأربعين يوما أو خمس وأربعين فيقول أي رب أشقي أم سعيد فيقول الله ويكتبان فيقول أذكر أم أنثى فيقول الله ويكتبان ويكتب عمله وأثره ورزقه وأجله ثم تطوى الصحف فلا يزاد على ما فيها ولا ينتقص " ورواه مسلم من حديث سفيان بن عيينة ومن طريق آخر عن أبي الطفيل بنحو معناه وقوله " ثم نخرجكم طفلا " أي ضعيفا في بدنه وسمعه وبصره وحواسه وبطشه وعقله ثم يعطيه الله القوة شيئا فشيئا ويلطف به ويحنن عليه والديه في آناء الليل وأطراف النهار ولهذا قال " ثم لتبلغوا أشدكم " أي يتكامل القوي ويتزايد ويصل إلى عنفوان الشباب وحسن المنظر " ومنكم من يتوفى " أي في حال شبابه وقواه " ومنكم من يرد إلى أرذل العمر " وهو الشيخوخة والهرم وضعف القوة والعقل والفهم وتناقص الأحوال من الخوف وضعف الفكر ولهذا قال " لكي لا يعلم من بعد علم شيئا " كما قال تعالى " الله الذي خلقكم من ضعف ثم جعل من بعد ضعف قوة ثم جعل من بعد قوة ضعفا وشيبة يخلق ما يشاء وهو العليم القدير " وقد قال الحافظ أبو يعلى أحمد بن علي بن المثنى الموصلي في مسنده حدثنا منصور بن أبي مزاحم حدثنا خالد الزيات حدثني داود أبو سليمان عن عبدالله بن عبدالرحمن بن معمر بن حزم الأنصاري عن أنس بن مالك رفع الحديث قال " المولود حتى يبلغ الحنث ما عمل من حسنة كتبت لوالده أو لوالديه وما عمل من سيئة لم تكتب عليه ولا على والديه فإذا بلغ الحنث أجرى الله عليه القلم أمر الملكان اللذان كانا معه أن يحفظا وأن يشددا فإذا بلغ أربعين سنة في الإسلام أمنه الله من البلايا الثلاث: الجنون والجذام والبرص فإذا بلغ الخمسين خفف الله عنه حسابه فإذا بلغ ستين رزقه الله الإنابة إليه بما أحب فإذا بلغ السبعين أحبه أهل السماء فإذا بلغ الثمانين كتب الله حسناته وتجاوز عن سيئاته فإذا بلغ التسعين غفر الله له ما تقدم من ذنبه وما تأخر وشفعه في أهل بيته وكتب أمين الله وكان أسير الله في أرضه فإذا بلغ أرذل العمر لكي لا يعلم من بعد علم شيئا كتب الله له مثل ما كان يعمل في صحته من الخير فإذا عمل سيئة لم تكتب عليه " هذا حديث غريب جدا وفيه نكارة شديدة ومع هذا قد رواه الإمام أحمد بن حنبل في مسنده موقوقا ومرفوعا فقال: حدثنا أبو النضر حدثنا الفرج حدثنا محمد بن عامر عن محمد بن عبدالله العاملي عن عمرو بن جعفر عن أنس قال " إذا بلغ الرجل المسلم أربعين سنة أمنه الله من أنواع البلايا من الجنون والبرص والجذام فإذا بلغ الخمسين لين الله حسابه وإذا بلغ الستين رزقه الله إنابة يحبه الله عليها وإذا بلغ السبعين أحبه الله وأحبه أهل السماء وإذا بلغ الثمانين تقبل الله حسناته ومحا عنه سيئاته وإذا بلغ التسعين غفر الله له ما تقدم من ذنبه وما تأخر وسمي أسير الله في أرضه وشفع في أهله " ثم قال حدثنا هشام حدثنا الفرج حدثني محمد بن عبدالله العامري عن محمد بن عبدالله بن عمرو بن عثمان عن عبدالله بن عمر بن الخطاب عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم مثله ورواه الإمام أحمد أيضا حدثنا أنس بن عياض حدثني يوسف بن أبي بردة الأنصاري عن جعفر بن عمرو بن أمية الضمري عن أنس بن مالك أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال " ما من معمر يعمر في الإسلام أربعين سنة إلا صرف الله عنه ثلاثة أنواع من البلاء: الجنون والبرص والجذام " وذكر تمام الحديث كما تقدم سواء ورواه الحافظ أبو بكر البزار عن عبدالله بن شبيب عن أبي شيبة عن عبدالله بن عبدالملك عن أبي قتادة العدوي عن ابن أخي الزهري عن عمه عن أنس بن مالك قال: قال رسول الله " ما من عبد يعمر في الإسلام أربعين سنة إلا صرف الله عنه أنواع من البلاء الجنون والجذام والبرص فإذا بلغ خمسين سنة لين الله الحساب فإذا بلغ ستين سنة رزقه الله الإنابة إليه بما يحب فإذا بلغ سبعين سنة غفر الله له ما تقدم من ذنبه وما تأخر وسمي أسير الله وأحبه أهل السماء فإذا بلغ الثمانين تقبل الله منه حسناته وتجاوز عن سيئاته فإذا بلغ التسعين غفر الله له ما تقدم من ذنبه وما تأخر وسمي أسير الله في أرضه وقوله " وترى الأرض هامدة " هذا دليل آخر على قدرته تعالى على إحياء الموتى كما يحي الأرض الميتة الهامدة وهي المقحلة التي لا ينبت فيها شيء وقال قتادة غبراء متهشمة. وقال السدي ميتة " فإذا أنزلنا عليها الماء اهتزت وربت وأنبتت من كل زوج بهيج " أي فإذا أنزل الله عليها المطر اهتزت أي تحركت بالنبات وحيت بعد موتها وربت أي ارتفعت لما سكن فيها الثرى ثم أنبتت ما فيها من الألوان والفنون من ثمار وزروع وأشتات في اختلاف ألوانها وطعومها وروائحها وأشكالها ومنافعها ولهذا قال تعالى " وأنبتت من كل زوج بهيج " أي حسن المنظر طيب الريح.

Evidence of the Resurrection in the creation of Man and of Plants

When Allah speaks of disbelief in the Resurrection, He also mentions the evidence of His power and ability to resurrect that is evident from the way He initiates creation. Allah says:

يَأَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِن كُنتُمْ فِى رَيْبٍ مِّنَ الْبَعْثِ

(O mankind! If you are in doubt about the Resurrection,) which means the time when souls and bodies will be raised up on the Day of Resurrection,

فَإِنَّا خَلَقْنَـكُمْ مِّن تُرَابٍ

(then verily, We have created you from dust,) meaning, `you were originally created from dust', which is what Adam, peace be upon him, was created from.

ثُمَّ مِن نُّطْفَةٍ

(then from a Nutfah,) 32:8 meaning, then He made his offspring from semen of despised water.

The Development of the Nutfah and Embryo in the Womb

ثُمَّ مِنْ عَلَقَةٍ ثُمَّ مِن مُّضْغَةٍ

(then from a clot then from a little lump of flesh) if the Nutfah establishes itself in the woman's womb, it stays like that for forty days, then more material is added to it and it changes into a red clot, by the leave of Allah, and it remains like that for forty days. Then it changes and becomes a lump of flesh, like a piece of meat with no form or shape. Then it starts to take on a form and shape, developing a head, arms, chest, stomach, thighs, legs, feet and all its members. Sometimes a woman miscarries before the fetus is formed and sometimes she miscarries after it has formed. As Allah says:

ثُمَّ مِن مُّضْغَةٍ مُّخَلَّقَةٍ وَغَيْرِ مُخَلَّقَةٍ

(then from a little lump of flesh -- some formed and some unformed) meaning, as you see.

لِّنُبَيِّنَ لَكُمْ وَنُقِرُّ فِى الاٌّرْحَامِ مَا نَشَآءُ إِلَى أَجَلٍ مُّسَمًّى

(that We may make (it) clear to you. And We cause whom We will to remain in the wombs for an appointed term,) meaning that sometimes the fetus remains in the womb and is not miscarried.

مُّخَلَّقَةٍ وَغَيْرِ مُخَلَّقَةٍ

(some formed and some unformed, ) Mujahid said, "This means the miscarried fetus, formed or unformed. When forty days have passed of it being a lump of flesh, then Allah sends an angel to it who breathes the soul into it and forms it as Allah wills, handsome or ugly, male or female. He then writes its provision, its allotted length of life and whether it is to be one of the blessed or the wretched." It was recorded in the Two Sahihs that Ibn Mas`ud said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who is the true and truly inspired one, told us:

«إِنَّ خَلْقَ أَحَدِكُمْ يُجْمَعُ فِي بَطْنِ أُمِّهِ أَرْبَعِينَ لَيْلَةً، ثُمَّ يَكُونُ عَلَقَةً مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ، ثُمَّ يَكُونُ مُضْغَةً مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ، ثُمَّ يَبْعَثُ اللهُ إِلَيْهِ الْمَلَكَ فَيُؤْمَرُ بِأَرْبَعِ كَلِمَاتٍ: بِكَتْبِ رِزْقِهِ وَعَمَلِهِ وَأَجَلِهِ، وَشَقِيٌّ أَوْ سَعِيدٌ، ثُمَّ يُنْفَخُ فِيهِ الرُّوح»

(Every one of you is collected in the womb of his mother for the first forty days, and then he becomes a clot for another forty days, and then a lump of flesh for another forty days. Then Allah sends an angel to write four words: He writes his provision, his deeds, his life span, and whether he will be blessed or wretched. Then he blows the soul into him.)"

Man's Development from Infancy to Old Age His saying;

ثُمَّ نُخْرِجُكُمْ طِفْلاً

(then We bring you out as infants,) means, weak in his body, hearing, sight, senses, stamina and mind. Then Allah gives him strength, gradually and causes his parents to treat him with tender kindness night and day. Allah says:

ثُمَّ لِتَـبْلُغُواْ أَشُدَّكُـمْ

(then (give you growth) that you may reach your age of full strength.) meaning, his strength increases until he reaches the vitality and handsomeness of youth.

وَمِنكُمْ مَّن يُتَوَفَّى

(And among you there is he who dies,) means, when he is young and strong.

وَمِنكُم مَّن يُرَدُّ إِلَى أَرْذَلِ الْعُمُرِ

(and among you there is he who is brought back to the miserable old age,) meaning advanced old age with its weakness in mind and body, in steady decline in comprehension, and disability to grasp. As Allah says:

لِكَيْلاَ يَعْلَمَ مِن بَعْدِ عِلْمٍ شَيْئاً

(so that he knows nothing after having known.)

اللَّهُ الَّذِى خَلَقَكُمْ مِّن ضَعْفٍ ثُمَّ جَعَلَ مِن بَعْدِ ضَعْفٍ قُوَّةٍ ثُمَّ جَعَلَ مِن بَعْدِ قُوَّةٍ ضَعْفاً وَشَيْبَةً يَخْلُقُ مَا يَشَآءُ وَهُوَ الْعَلِيمُ الْقَدِيرُ

(Allah is He Who created you in (a state of) weakness, then gave you strength after weakness, then after strength gave (you) weakness and grey hair. He creates what He wills. And it is He Who is the All-Knowing, the All-Powerful.) 30:54

Another Parable of the Resurrection from Plants

وَتَرَى الاٌّرْضَ هَامِدَةً

(And you see the earth Hamidatan,) This is another sign of the power of Allah to bring the dead back to life, just as He brings the dead, barren earth back to life, the lifeless earth in which nothing grows. Qatadah said, "(This means) the eroded, dusty earth." As-Suddi said, "Dead."

فَإِذَآ أَنزَلْنَا عَلَيْهَا الْمَآءَ اهْتَزَّتْ وَرَبَتْ وَأَنبَتَتْ مِن كُلِّ زَوْجٍ بَهِيجٍ

(but when We send down water on it, it is stirred (to life), and it swells and puts forth every lovely kind (of growth).) When Allah sends the rain upon it, it is stirred to life, that is, vegetation begins to grow and it comes alive after it was dead. Then it rises after the soil had settled, then it puts forth its different kinds of fruit and crops with all their varied colours, tastes, fragrances, shapes and benefits. Allah says:

وَأَنبَتَتْ مِن كُلِّ زَوْجٍ بَهِيجٍ

(and puts forth every lovely kind (of growth).) meaning, beautiful in appearance and with delightful fragrances.

ذلِكَ بِأَنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ الْحَقُّ

(That is because Allah: He is the Truth,) means, the Creator, the Controller, the One Who does as He wills.

وَأَنَّهُ يُحْىِ الْمَوْتَى

(and it is He Who gives life to the dead,) means, just as He gives life to the dead earth and brings forth from it all these kinds of vegetation.

إِنَّ الَّذِى أَحْيَـهَا لَمُحْىِ الْمَوْتَى إِنَّهُ عَلَى كُلِّ شَىْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

(Verily, He Who gives it life, surely is able to give life to the dead. Indeed He is able to do all things.) 41:39

إِنَّمَآ أَمْرُهُ إِذَآ أَرَادَ شَيْئاً أَن يَقُولَ لَهُ كُن فَيَكُونُ

(Verily, His command, when He intends a thing, is only that He says to it, "Be!" -- and it is!) 36:82.

وَأَنَّ السَّاعَةَ ءَاتِيَةٌ لاَّ رَيْبَ فِيهَا

(And surely, the Hour is coming, there is no doubt about it;) meaning, it will inevitably come to pass.

وَأَنَّ اللَّهَ يَبْعَثُ مَن فِى الْقُبُورِ

(and certainly, Allah will resurrect those who are in the graves.) means, He will bring them back to life after they have become dust; He will create them anew after they have become nothing.

وَضَرَبَ لَنَا مَثَلاً وَنَسِىَ خَلْقَهُ قَالَ مَن يُحىِ الْعِظَـمَ وَهِىَ رَمِيمٌ

قُلْ يُحْيِيهَا الَّذِى أَنشَأَهَآ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ وَهُوَ بِكُلِّ خَلْقٍ عَلِيمٌ - الَّذِى جَعَلَ لَكُم مِّنَ الشَّجَرِ الاٌّخْضَرِ نَاراً فَإِذَآ أَنتُم مِّنْه تُوقِدُونَ

(And he puts forth for Us a parable, and forgets his own creation. He says: "Who will give life to these bones after they are rotten and have become dust" Say: "He will give life to them Who created them for the first time! And He is the All-Knower of every creation!" He Who produces for you fire out of the green tree, when behold you kindle there- with.) 36:78-80. And there are many similar Ayat.

ومِنَ النَّاسِ مَن يُجَـدِلُ فِى اللَّهِ بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ وَلاَ هُدًى وَلاَ كِتَـبٍ مُّنِيرٍ

O mankind in other words O people of Mecca if you are in doubt about the Resurrection then lo! consider that We have created you that is We have created your origin — Adam — from dust then We created his progeny from a drop a sperm-drop then from a clot congealed blood then from a little lump of flesh mudgha a piece of flesh the size of what one would be able to chew mā yumdagh partly formed shaped complete in form and partly unformed that is uncomplete in form that We may make clear to you the perfect nature of Our power that you might then infer from this initial act of creation the reality of its future restoration. And We establish nuqirru marks a new grammatically independent sentence in the wombs whatever We will for a specified time that is until the time for it to come out then We bring you forth from the bellies of your mothers as infants and then We extend your life that you may come of age ashuddakum that is to say your prime and strength which is that age between thirty and forty years. And there are some of you who are taken away by death before coming of age and there are some of you who are relegated to the most abject time of life its most despicable state of decrepitude and senility so that after having had some knowledge he no longer knows anything — ‘Ikrima said ‘Whoever recites the Qur’ān such a state will not befall him’. And you see the earth torpid barren yet when We send down water upon it it stirs it moves and swells it rises and grows and grows plants of anbatat min min is extra every delightful fair kind species.

Different stages in the development of foetus in mother's womb

فَإِنَّا خَلَقْنَاكُم مِّن تُرَ‌ابٍ (We created you from dust - 22:5.) This verse deals with the different stages through which the foetus passes in its mother's womb before taking a human form. There is a detailed hadith on this subject, which is reproduced in Sahih of Bukhari on the authority of Sayyidna Ibn Masud ؓ to the effect that the Holy Prophet ﷺ said, "Human matter retains its original form in the woman's womb for forty days after which it becomes a clot of blood. After a further period of forty days it becomes a lump of flesh. Thereafter an angel is sent by Allah Ta’ ala who breaths a soul into it and records four things about it, namely how long it will live, how much sustenance it will receive, what acts he will do, and finally whether its end will be wretched or fortunate. There is another narration which has been related by Ibn Abi Hatim and Ibn Jarir, also on the authority of ` Abdullah Ibn Masud ؓ ، that when the seed becomes a lump of flesh after passing through different stages, the angel responsible to watch the progressive development of each individual then seeks guidance from Allah Ta’ ala saying: یَارَبّ مُخَلَّقَۃ او غیر مُخَلَّقۃ . That is, whether it is His will that the lump of flesh should be allowed to grow and become a living human being. If Allah says it is: غَیر مُخَلَّقۃ then the womb aborts the foetus and it does not reach the higher stages leading to a live birth. On the other hand, if Allah says that it is: مُخَلَّقۃ then the angel asks Him whether it is to be a boy or a girl, wretched or fortunate, how long it will live, how it will spend its life and when it will die. The angel is given information on all these matters then and there. (Ibn Kathir) Sayyidna Ibn ` Abbas رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہما has also interpreted the words (مُخَلَّقَۃ او غیر مُخَلَّقۃ) in a similar manner. (Qurtubi)

مُّخَلَّقَةٍ وَغَيْرِ‌ مُخَلَّقَةٍ (shaped or unshaped - 22:5). It is evident from the hadith referred to above that the human seed which completes its full term in the womb and is destined to be born as a normal human being is meant by (shaped), whereas a seed which is destined to be aborted is (unshaped). However, there are other commentators who have explained these two words differently. According to them a foetus which completes all the stages of growth and development and whose limbs and other organs of the body are healthy, normal and proportionate ism (shaped). On the other hand, a foetus whose limbs are deformed or disproportionate is غَيْرِ‌ مُخَلَّقَةٍ (unshaped). The latter interpretation is close to the translation adopted above. Allah knows best.

ثُمَّ نُخْرِ‌جُكُمْ طِفْلًا Then We bring you out as babies - 22:5) Then Allah brings forth the baby from its mother's womb as a totally helpless thing. Its body is weak and so are its other faculties, such as hearing, vision, senses, brain function, and overall physical movements including its grasp. All theses faculties grow strong as time passes until they reach their full capability. This is the meaning of the words ثُمَّ لِتَبْلُغُوا أَشُدَّكُمْ. (Then [ We nourish you ] so that you reach your maturity - 22:5). The word Ashudd اَشُد is the plural of shiddah شِدَّہ ، just as An` um اَنعَم is the plural of Ni'mah نِعمَۃ . The meanings of these words are that the process of gradual development continues until all the faculties reach their peak and this happens when a person is in the prime of his youth.

أَرْ‌ذَلِ الْعُمُرِ‌ (The worst part of the age - 22:5). It means the stage of life when human faculties and senses begin to degenerate. The Holy Prophet ﷺ had sought Allah's protection from such life. Nasa'i has quoted Sayyidna Sa'd ؓ as saying that the Holy Prophet ﷺ used to repeat the following prayer very frequently. (Qurtubi):

اللَّھُمَّ اِنِّی اَعُوذُ بِکَ مِنَ البُخَلِ واَعُوذُ بِکَ مِنَ الجُبنِ وَ اَعُوذُ بِکَ مِنَ اَن اُرَدَّ اِلٰی اَرذَلِ العُمرِ وَ اَعُوذُ بِکَ مِنَ فِتنَۃِ الدُّنیَا وَ عَذَابِ القَبرِ

(0 Allah! I seek Your protection from miserliness, and I seek Your protection from cowardice, and I seek Your protection from that I am carried to the age of helplessness, and I seek Your protection from the seductions of this world and the chastisement of the grave.)

An account of the different stages of human life after birth

Musnad of Ahmad and Musnad of Abu Ya` la quote Sayyidna 'Anas Ibn Malik ؓ that the Holy Prophet ﷺ once said "The good deeds of a minor child are recorded in the account of his father or both his parents, but his evil deeds are not recorded, neither in his parents' account nor in his own. After he has attained majority, an account is opened in his own name and the two angels who are attached to him are commanded to afford him protection and provide him strength. When he reaches the age of forty years and is still a Muslim, then Allah Ta’ ala grants him immunity from three diseases: insanity, leprosy and leucoderma. When he reaches the age of fifty years, Allah eases and abates his record. At the age of sixty, Allah Ta’ ala creates in him an urge to turn his thoughts towards Him. At seventy, all the inhabitants of the sky begin to love him. When he is eighty, Allah Ta’ ala records his good deeds but ignores his lapses. At ninety, Allah writes off all his sins, and grants him permission to intercede on behalf of his relatives and also accepts his intercession. He is then given the titles of اَمِین اللہ (Allah's trustee) and اَسِیرَ اللہ فی الارض (that is the prisoner of Allah on earth, because at that age all his strength is gone, he loses interest in his surroundings and spends his life like a prisoner). And when he reaches the worst of age, then all the good deeds which he used to perform when he was strong and healthy continue to be recorded in his account while his sinful acts remain unrecorded."

Having reproduced this tradition from Musnad Abu Ya` la, Hafiz Ibn Kathir says:

ھٰذاحَدِیث غَرِیب جِدَّاً و فِیہ نکارۃ شدیدہ

This hadith is gharb (i.e. reported by one narrator only), and is extremely munkar (i.e. reported by a weak narrator against the authentic traditions).

He then adds:

و مع ھذا قد رواہ الامام احمد بن حنبل فی مسندہٖ موقوفاً و مرفوعاً

(And in spite of all this Imam Ahmad Ibn Hanbal (رح) has related it in his Musnad both as a saying of the Holy Prophet ﷺ and as a saying of a Sahabi, that is traced.

O people, if you are in doubt about the Uprising, surely We created you of dust, then of a sperm drop, then of a blood clot, then of a lump of flesh, fully created and not fully created, that We might make clear to you. The composition of the Adamic body in the first creation is a clear argument against the deniers of the Uprising. He is saying, “I am the Lord who created a body and figure with such comeliness, a stature and form with such beauty, from that feeble sperm drop in that firm settledness. He says, “Did We not create you of feeble water, then put it in a firm settledness?” [77:20-21]. If you ponder this body, you will find an exemplar of all the created and newly arrived things in the celestial and terrestrial worlds. Just as He arranged the seven spheres in heaven, so also He composed seven parts in this body-water and dust, and then flesh, skin, veins, sinews, and bones. Just as He divided the spheres into twelve constellations, so also He made twelve holes in this structure in the likeness of the twelve constellations: two eyes, two ears, two nostrils, two breasts, the two well-known roads, the mouth, and the navel. Just as the angels travel in the layers of the heavens, so also the faculties of the soul travel in this Adamic composition. Just as some of the constellations in heaven are southern and some northern, some of these holes in the body are toward the right and some toward the left. Just as there are seven stars in the spheres of heaven called planets and, in the view of some, misfortune and felicity are tied to their forelocks, so also in your body there are seven faculties to which the wholesomeness of the body is tied: the faculty of eyesight, the faculty of hearing, and the faculties of taste, smell, touch, speech, and intellect. The root of these branches is in the heart, and to this the Prophet alluded with his words, “Surely in the body of Adam's child there is a lump of flesh. When it is wholesome, the rest of the body is also wholesome, and surely it is the heart.” This then is taking into account the celestial world.
