2:83 Al-Baqara (The Cow)

وهذه الشرائع من أصول الدين, التي أمر الله بها في كل شريعة, لاشتمالها على المصالح العامة, في كل زمان ومكان, فلا يدخلها نسخ, كأصل الدين، ولهذا أمرنا بها في قوله: { وَاعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ وَلَا تُشْرِكُوا بِهِ شَيْئًا } إلى آخر الآية. فقوله: { وَإِذْ أَخَذْنَا مِيثَاقَ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ } هذا من قسوتهم أن كل أمر أمروا به, استعصوا؛ فلا يقبلونه إلا بالأيمان الغليظة, والعهود الموثقة { لَا تَعْبُدُونَ إِلَّا اللَّهَ } هذا أمر بعبادة الله وحده, ونهى عن الشرك به، وهذا أصل الدين, فلا تقبل الأعمال كلها إن لم يكن هذا أساسها, فهذا حق الله تعالى على عباده, ثم قال: { وَبِالْوَالِدَيْنِ إِحْسَانًا } أي: أحسنوا بالوالدين إحسانا، وهذا يعم كل إحسان قولي وفعلي مما هو إحسان إليهم، وفيه النهي عن الإساءة إلى الوالدين, أو عدم الإحسان والإساءة، لأن الواجب الإحسان, والأمر بالشيء نهي عن ضده. وللإحسان ضدان: الإساءة, وهي أعظم جرما، وترك الإحسان بدون إساءة, وهذا محرم, لكن لا يجب أن يلحق بالأول، وكذا يقال في صلة الأقارب واليتامى, والمساكين، وتفاصيل الإحسان لا تنحصر بالعد, بل تكون بالحد, كما تقدم. ثم أمر بالإحسان إلى الناس عموما فقال: { وَقُولُوا لِلنَّاسِ حُسْنًا } ومن القول الحسن أمرهم بالمعروف, ونهيهم عن المنكر, وتعليمهم العلم, وبذل السلام, والبشاشة وغير ذلك من كل كلام طيب. ولما كان الإنسان لا يسع الناس بماله, أمر بأمر يقدر به على الإحسان إلى كل مخلوق, وهو الإحسان بالقول, فيكون في ضمن ذلك النهي عن الكلام القبيح للناس حتى للكفار, ولهذا قال تعالى: { وَلَا تُجَادِلُوا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ إِلَّا بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ } ومن أدب الإنسان الذي أدب الله به عباده, أن يكون الإنسان نزيها في أقواله وأفعاله, غير فاحش ولا بذيء, ولا شاتم, ولا مخاصم، بل يكون حسن الخلق, واسع الحلم, مجاملا لكل أحد, صبورا على ما يناله من أذى الخلق, امتثالا لأمر الله, ورجاء لثوابه. ثم أمرهم بإقامة الصلاة, وإيتاء الزكاة, لما تقدم أن الصلاة متضمنة للإخلاص للمعبود, والزكاة متضمنة للإحسان إلى العبيد. { ثُمَّ } بعد هذا الأمر لكم بهذه الأوامر الحسنة التي إذا نظر إليها البصير العاقل, عرف أن من إحسان الله على عباده أن أمرهم بها,, وتفضل بها عليهم وأخذ المواثيق عليكم { تَوَلَّيْتُمْ } على وجه الإعراض، لأن المتولي قد يتولى, وله نية رجوع إلى ما تولى عنه، وهؤلاء ليس لهم رغبة ولا رجوع في هذه الأوامر، فنعوذ بالله من الخذلان. وقوله: { إِلَّا قَلِيلًا مِنْكُمْ } هذا استثناء, لئلا يوهم أنهم تولوا كلهم، فأخبر أن قليلا منهم, عصمهم الله وثبتهم.

يذكر تبارك وتعالى بني إسرائيل بما أمرهم به من الأوامر وأخده ميثاقهم على ذلك وأنهم تولوا عن ذلك كله وأعرضوا قصدا وعمدا وهم يعرفونه ويذكرونه فأمرهم تعالى أن يعبدوه ولا يشركوا به شيئا وبهذا أمر جميع خلقه ولذلك خلقهم كما قال تعالى "وما أرسلنا من قبلك من رسول إلا نوحي إليه أنه لا إله إلا أنا فاعبدون" وقال تعالى "ولقد بعثنا في كل أمة رسولا أن اعبدوا الله واجتنبوا الطاغوت" وهذا هو أعلى الحقوق وأعظمها وهو حق الله تبارك وتعالى أن يعبد وحده لا شريك له ثم بعده حق المخلوقين وآكدهم وأولاهم بذلك حق الوالدين ولهذا يقرن تبارك وتعالى بين حقه وحق الوالدين كما قال تعالى "أن أشكر لي ولوالديك إلي المصير" وقال تبارك وتعالى "وقضى ربك أن لا تعبدوا إلا إياه وبالوالدين إحسانا" إلى أن قال "وآت ذا القربى حقه والمسكين وابن السبيل" وفي الصحيحين عن ابن مسعود قلت يا رسول الله أي العمل أفضل؟ قال "الصلاة على وقتها" قلت ثم أي؟ قال "بر الوالدين" قلت ثم أي؟ قال "الجهاد في سبيل الله" ولهذا جاء في الحديث الصحيح أن رجلا قال يا رسول الله من أبر؟ قال "أمك" قال ثم من؟ قال "أمك" قال ثم من؟ قال "أباك؟ ثم أدناك ثم أدناك" وقوله تعالى "لا تعبدون إلا الله" قال الزمخشري خبر بمعنى الطلب وهو آكد وقيل كان أصله "أن لا تعبدوا إلا الله" كما قرأها من قرأها من السلف فحذفت أن فارتفع وحكي عن أبي وابن مسعود أنهما قرآها "لا تعبدوا إلا الله" ونقل هذا التوجيه القرطبي في تفسيره عن سيبويه. قال واختاره الكسائي والفراء قال "واليتامى" وهم الصغار الذين لا كاسب لهم من الآباء والمساكين الذين لا يجدون ما ينفقون على أنفسهم وأهليهم وسيأتي الكلام على هذه الأصناف عند آية النساء التي أمرنا الله تعالى بها صريحا في قوله "واعبدوا الله ولا تشركوا به شيئا وبالوالدين إحسانا" الآية. وقوله تعالى "وقولوا للناس حسنا" أي كلموهم طيبا ولينوا لهم جانبا ويدخل في ذلك الأمر بالمعروف والنهي عن المنكر بالمعروف كما قال الحسن البصري في قوله تعالى "وقولوا للناس حسنا" فالحسن من القول يأمر بالمعروف وينهى عن المنكر ويحلم ويعفو ويصفح ويقول للناس حسنا كما قال الله وهو كل خلق حسن رضيه الله. وقال الإمام أحمد: حدثنا روح حدثنا أبو عامر الخراز عن أبي عمران الجوني عن عبدالله بن الصامت عن أبي ذر - رضي الله عنه - عن النبي - صلى الله عليه وسلم - أنه قال "لا تحقرن من المعروف شيئا وإن لم تجد فالق أخاك بوجه منطلق" وأخرجه مسلم في صحيحه والترمذي وصححه من حديث أبي عامر الخراز واسمه صالح بن رستم به وناسب أن يأمرهم بأن يقولوا للناس حسنا بعد ما أمرهم بالإحسان إليهم بالفعل فجمع بين طرفي الإحسان الفعلي والقولي ثم أكد الأمر بعبادته والإحسان إلى الناس بالمتعين من ذلك وهو الصلاة والزكاة فقال: "وأقيموا الصلاة وآتوا الزكاة" وأخبر أنهم تولوا عن ذلك كله أي تركوه وراء ظهورهم وأعرضوا عنه على عمد بعد العلم به إلا القليل منهم. وقد أمر الله هذه الأمة بنظير ذلك في سورة النساء بقوله "واعبدوا الله ولا تشركوا به شيئا وبالوالدين إحسانا وبذي القربى واليتامى والمساكين والجار ذي القربى والجار الجنب والصاحب بالجنب وابن السبيل وما ملكت أيمانكم إن الله لا يحب من كان مختالا فخورا" فقامت هذه الأمة من ذلك بما لم تقم به أمة من الأمم قبلها ولله الحمد والمنة. ومن النقول الغريبة ههنا ما ذكره ابن أبي حاتم في تفسيره حدثنا أبي حدثنا محمد بن خلف العسقلاني حدثنا عبدالله بن يوسف يعني التنيسي حدثنا خالد بن صبيح عن حميد بن عقبة عن أسد بن وداعة أنه كان يخرج من منزله فلا يلقى يهوديا ولا نصرانيا إلا سلم عليه فقيل له: ما شأنك تسلم على اليهودي والنصراني؟ فقال: إن الله تعالى "يقول وقولوا للناس حسنا" وهو السلام قال: وروي عن عطاء الخراساني نحوه "قلت" وقد ثبت في السنة أنهم لا يبدءون بالسلام والله أعلم.

The Covenant that Allah took from the Children of Israel

Allah reminded the Children of Israel of the commandments that He gave them, and the covenants that He took from them to abide by those commands, and how they intentionally and knowingly turned away from all of that. Allah commanded them to worship Him and to associate none with Him in worship, just as He has commanded all of His creatures, for this is why Allah created them. Allah said,

وَمَآ أَرْسَلْنَا مِن قَبْلِكَ مِن رَّسُولٍ إِلاَّ نُوحِى إِلَيْهِ أَنَّهُ لا إِلَـهَ إِلاَّ أَنَاْ فَاعْبُدُونِ

(And We did not send any Messenger before you (O Muhammad ) but We revealed to him (saying): La ilaha illa Ana none has the right to be worshipped but I (Allah), so worship Me (alone and none else)) (21:25), and,

وَلَقَدْ بَعَثْنَا فِى كُلِّ أُمَّةٍ رَّسُولاً أَنِ اعْبُدُواْ اللَّهَ وَاجْتَنِبُواْ الْطَّـغُوتَ

(And verily, We have sent among every Ummah (community, nation) a Messenger (proclaiming): "Worship Allah (alone), and avoid the Taghut (all false deities,)) (16:36).

This is the highest and most important right, that is, Allah's right that He be worshipped alone without partners.

After that comes the right of the creatures, foremost, the right of the parents. Allah usually mentions the rights of the parents along with His rights. For instance, Allah said,

أَنِ اشْكُرْ لِى وَلِوَلِدَيْكَ إِلَىَّ الْمَصِيرُ

(Give thanks to Me and to your parents. Unto Me is the final destination) (31:14). Also, Allah said,

وَقَضَى رَبُّكَ أَلاَّ تَعْبُدُواْ إِلاَّ إِيَّـهُ وَبِالْوَلِدَيْنِ إِحْسَـناً

(And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And that you be dutiful to your parents) (17:23), until,

وَءَاتِ ذَا الْقُرْبَى حَقَّهُ وَالْمِسْكِينَ وَابْنَ السَّبِيلِ

(And give to the kinsman his due and to the Miskin (poor) and to the wayfarer) (17:26). The Two Sahihs record that Ibn Mas`ud said,

قُلْتُ:

«يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أيُّ الْعَمَل أَفْضَلُ؟ قَالَ:

«الصَّلَاةُ عَلى وَقْتِهَا»

قُلْتُ: ثُمَّ أَيٌّ؟ قَالَ:

«بِرُّ الْوَالِدَيْن»

قُلْتُ: ثُمَّ أَيٌّ؟ قَالَ:

«الْجِهَادُ فِي سَبِيلِ الله»

(I said, `O Messenger of Allah! What is the best deed' He said, `Performing the prayer on time.' I said, 'Then what' He said, `Being kind to one's parents.' I said, `Then what' He said, `Jihad in the cause of Allah.')

Allah then said,

وَالْيَتَـمَى

(and to orphans) meaning, the young who have no fathers to fend for them.

وَالْمَسَـكِينُ

(and Al-Masakin (the poor)), plural for Miskin, the one who does not find what he needs to spend on himself and his family. We will discuss these categories when we explain the Ayah of Surat An-Nisa` where Allah said,

وَاعْبُدُواْ اللَّهَ وَلاَ تُشْرِكُواْ بِهِ شَيْئاً وَبِالْوَلِدَيْنِ إِحْسَـناً

(Worship Allah and join none with Him (in worship); and do good to parents) (4:36).

Allah's statement,

وَقُولُواْ لِلنَّاسِ حُسْنًا

(and speak good to people) meaning, say good words to them and be lenient with them, this includes commanding good and forbidding evil. Al-Hasan Al-Basri commented on Allah's statement,

وَقُولُواْ لِلنَّاسِ حُسْنًا

(and speak good to people), ".`The good saying' means commanding good and forbidding evil, and being patient and forgiving. The `good words to people', as Allah commanded, also includes every good type of behavior that Allah is pleased with." Imam Ahmad narrated that Abu Dharr said that the Prophet said,

«لَا تَحْقِرَنَّ مِنَ الْمَعْرُوفِ شَيْئًا وَإِنْ لَمْ تَجِدْ فَالْقَ أَخَاكَ بِوَجْهٍ مُنْطَلِق»

(Do not belittle any form of righteousness, and even if you did not find any good deed except meeting your brother with a smiling face, then do so.)

This Hadith was also collected by Muslim in his Sahih and At-Tirmidhi, who graded it Sahih.

Allah commands the servants to say good words to people, after He commanded them to be kind to them, thereby mentioning two categories of manners: good speech and good actions. He then emphasized the command to worship Him and the command to do good, ordaining the prayer and the Zakah,

وَأَقِيمُواْ الصَّلوةَ وَآتُواْ الزَّكَوةَ

(and perform As-Salah and give Zakah). Allah informed us that the People of the Book, except for a few among them, ignored these orders, that is, they knowingly and intentionally abandoned them. Allah ordered this Ummah similarly in Surat An-Nisa' when He said,

وَاعْبُدُواْ اللَّهَ وَلاَ تُشْرِكُواْ بِهِ شَيْئاً وَبِالْوَلِدَيْنِ إِحْسَـناً وَبِذِى الْقُرْبَى وَالْيَتَـمَى وَالْمَسَـكِينِ وَالْجَارِ ذِى الْقُرْبَى وَالْجَارِ الْجُنُبِ وَالصَّـحِبِ بِالجَنْبِ وَابْنِ السَّبِيلِ وَمَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَـنُكُمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لاَ يُحِبُّ مَن كَانَ مُخْتَالاً فَخُوراً

(Worship Allah and join none with Him (in worship); and do good to parents, kinsfolk, orphans, Al-Masakin (the poor), the neighbor who is near of kin, the neighbor who is a stranger, the companion by your side, the wayfarer (you meet), and those (servants) whom your right hands possess. Verily, Allah does not like such as are proud and boastful) (4:36).

Of these orders, this Ummah has practiced what no other nation before it has, and all praise is due to Allah.

And mention when We made a covenant with the Children of Israel in the Torah where We said ‘You shall not worship a variant reading for lā ta‘budūna has third person plural lā ya‘budūn ‘they shall not worship’ any other than God lā ta‘budūna illā Llāha is a predicate denoting a prohibition; one may also read lā ta‘budū Worship you not; and to be good and righteous to parents and the near of kin here kinship is adjoined to parents; and to orphans and to the needy; and speak well good words to men commanding good and forbidding evil being truthful with regard to the status of Muhammad (s) and being kind to them sc. orphans and the needy a variant reading for hasanan has husnan the verbal noun used as a hyperbolic description; and observe prayer and pay the alms’ which you actually accepted but then you turned away refusing to fulfil these obligations here the second person address is used but their forefathers are still meant; all but a few of you rejecting it like your forefathers.

This verse speaks of the pledge which Allah had made the Israelites take, and the few people it refers to as having been true to the pledge were those who acted upon the Shari'ah of Sayyidna Musa (علیہ السلام) (Moses) as long as it was in force, and when it was abrogated, followed the Shari` ah of Sayyidna Muhammad ﷺ .

Injunctions and related considerations

(1) This verse brings out the basic elements common to Islam and all the earlier Shari` ah: Tauhid توحید (the doctrine of Unity or Oneness); service to one's parents, relations, orphans and the needy; being gentle in speaking to all human beings; Salah نماز and Zakah زکاۃ .

(2) The verse asks us to adopt a gentle tone and an open-hearted manner in speaking to others, whether they are good or evil, pious or impious, orthodox or aberrant, followers of Sunnah or adherents to partitive innovations in it. In religious matter, however, one should not try to hide the truth for the sake of pleasing people or of winning their approval. The Holy Qur'an tells us that when Allah sent Sayyidna Musa and Sayyidna Harun (Moses and Aaron) (علیہم السلام) to the Pharaoh فرعون ، He instructed them to use gentle and soft words (20:42). None of us who addresses another today can be superior to Sayyidna Musa (علیہ السلام) ، nor can the man addressed be viler than the Pharaoh فرعون .

Talha ibn ` Umar recounts that once he said to the great master of the Sciences of Exegesis and Hadith, 'At-a' عطاء ، "One can see around you people who are not quite orthodox in their beliefs. As for me, I am rather short-tempered. If such people come to me, I deal with them harshly." ` Ata' replied, "Do not behave like this," and, reciting the present verse, he added, Allah has commanded us to speak to people politely. When Jews and Christians all are to be treated like this, would this commandment not apply to a Muslim, no matter what kind of a man he is?" (Qurtubi)
