2:74 Al-Baqara (The Cow)

{ ثُمَّ قَسَتْ قُلُوبُكُمْ } أي: اشتدت وغلظت, فلم تؤثر فيها الموعظة، { مِنْ بَعْدِ ذَلِكَ } أي: من بعد ما أنعم عليكم بالنعم العظيمة وأراكم الآيات، ولم يكن ينبغي أن تقسو قلوبكم, لأن ما شاهدتم, مما يوجب رقة القلب وانقياده، ثم وصف قسوتها بأنها { كَالْحِجَارَةِ } التي هي أشد قسوة من الحديد، لأن الحديد والرصاص إذا أذيب في النار, ذاب بخلاف الأحجار. وقوله: { أَوْ أَشَدُّ قَسْوَةً } أي: إنها لا تقصر عن قساوة الأحجار، وليست \" أو \" بمعنى \" بل \" ثم ذكر فضيلة الأحجار على قلوبهم، فقال: { وَإِنَّ مِنَ الْحِجَارَةِ لَمَا يَتَفَجَّرُ مِنْهُ الْأَنْهَارُ وَإِنَّ مِنْهَا لَمَا يَشَّقَّقُ فَيَخْرُجُ مِنْهُ الْمَاءُ وَإِنَّ مِنْهَا لَمَا يَهْبِطُ مِنْ خَشْيَةِ اللَّهِ } فبهذه الأمور فضلت قلوبكم. ثم توعدهم تعالى أشد الوعيد فقال: { وَمَا اللَّهُ بِغَافِلٍ عَمَّا تَعْمَلُونَ } بل هو عالم بها حافظ لصغيرها وكبيرها, وسيجازيكم على ذلك أتم الجزاء وأوفاه. واعلم أن كثيرا من المفسرين رحمهم الله, قد أكثروا في حشو تفاسيرهم من قصص بني إسرائيل, ونزلوا عليها الآيات القرآنية, وجعلوها تفسيرا لكتاب الله, محتجين بقوله صلى الله عليه وسلم: \" حدثوا عن بني إسرائيل ولا حرج \" والذي أرى أنه وإن جاز نقل أحاديثهم على وجه تكون مفردة غير مقرونة, ولا منزلة على كتاب الله, فإنه لا يجوز جعلها تفسيرا لكتاب الله قطعا إذا لم تصح عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، وذلك أن مرتبتها كما قال صلى الله عليه وسلم: \" لا تصدقوا أهل الكتاب ولا تكذبوهم \" فإذا كانت مرتبتها أن تكون مشكوكا فيها, وكان من المعلوم بالضرورة من دين الإسلام أن القرآن يجب الإيمان به والقطع بألفاظه ومعانيه، فلا يجوز أن تجعل تلك القصص المنقولة بالروايات المجهولة, التي يغلب على الظن كذبها أو كذب أكثرها, معاني لكتاب الله, مقطوعا بها ولا يستريب بهذا أحد، ولكن بسبب الغفلة عن هذا حصل ما حصل، والله الموفق.

يقول تعالى توبيخا لبني إسرائيل وتقريعا لهم على ما شاهدوه من آيات الله تعالى الله وإحيائه الموتى "ثم قست قلوبكم من بعد ذلك" كله فهي كالحجارة التي تلين أبدا ولهذا نهى الله المؤمنين عن مثل حالهم فقال "ألم يأن للذين آمنوا أن تخشع قلوبهم لذكر الله وما نزل من الحق ولا يكونوا كالذين أوتوا الكتاب من قبل فطال عليهم الأمد فقست قلوبهم وكثير منهم فاسقون" قال العوفي في تفسيره عن ابن عباس لما ضرب المقتول ببعض البقرة جلس أحيا ما كان قط فقيل له من قتلك قال بنو أخي قتلوني ثم قبض فقال بنو أخيه حين قبضه الله والله ما قتلناه فكذبوا بالحق بعد أن رأوه فقال الله "ثم قست قلوبكم من بعد ذلك" يعني أبناء أخي الشيخ فهي كالحجارة أو أشد قسوة فصارت قلوب بني إسرائيل مع طول الأمد قاسية بعيدة عن الموعظة بعد ما شاهدوه من الآيات والمعجزات فهي في قسوتها كالحجارة التي لا علاج للينها أو أشد قسوة من الحجارة فإن من الحجارة ما يتفجر منها العيون بالأنهار الجارية ومنها ما يشقق فيخرج منه الماء وإن لم يبن جاريا ومنها ما يهبط من رأس الجبل من خشية الله وفيه إدراك لذلك بحسبه كما قال "تسبح له السموات والأرض ومن فيهن وإن من شيء إلا يسبح بحمده ولكن لا تفقهون تسبيحهم إنه كان حليما غفورا" وقال ابن أبي نجيح عن مجاهد أنه كان يقول كل حجر يتفجر منه الماء أو يتشقق عن ماء أو يتردى من رأس جبل لمن خشية الله نزل بذلك القرآن وقال محمد بن إسحق حدثني محمد بن أبي محمد عن عكرمة أو سعيد بن جبير عن ابن عباس "وإن من الحجارة لما يتفجر منه الأنهار وإن منها لما يشقق فيخرج منه الماء وإن منها لما يهبط من خشية الله" أي وإن من الحجارة لألين من قلوبكم عما تدعون إليه من الحق "وما الله بغافل عما تعملون" وقال أبو علي الجياني في تفسيره "وإن منها لما يهبط من خشية الله" هو سقوط البرد من السحاب قال القاضي الباقلاني وهذا تأويل بعيد وتبعه في استبعاده الرازي وهو كما قال فإن هذا خروج عن اللفظ بلا دليل والله أعلم وقال: ابن أبي حاتم حدثنا أبي حدثنا هشام بن عمار حدثنا الحكم بن هشام الثقفي حدثني يحيى ابن أبي طالب يعني ويحيى بن يعقوب في قوله تعالى "وإن من الحجارة لما يتفجر منه الأنهار" قال كثرة البكاء "وإن منها لما يشقق فيخرج منه الماء" قال قليل البكاء "وإن منها لما يهبط من خشية الله" قال بكاء القلب غير دموع العين وقد زعم بعضهم أن هذا من باب المجاز وهو إسناد الخشوع إلى الحجارة ما أسندت الإرادة إلى الجدار في قوله "يريد أن ينقض" قال الرازي والقرطبي وغيرهما من الأئمة ولا حاجة إلى هذا فإن الله تعالى يخلق فيها هذه الصفة كما في قوله تعالى "إنا عرضنا الأمانة على السموات والأرض والجبال فأبين أن يحملنها وأشفقن منها" وقال "تسبح له السموات السبع والأرض ومن فيهن" الآية وقال "والنجم والشجر يسجدان" "أو لم يروا إلى ما خلق الله من شيء يتفيأ ظلاله" الآية "قالتا أتينا طائعين" "لو أنزلنا هذا القرآن على جبل" الآية "وقالوا لجلودهم لم شهدتم علينا قالوا أنطقنا الله" الآية وفي الصحيح "هذا جبل يحبنا ونحبه" وكحنين الجذع المتواتر خبره وفي صحيح مسلم "إني لأعرف حجرا بمكة كان يسلم علي قبل أن أبعث إني لأعرفه الآن" وفى صفة الحجر الأسود إنه يشهد لمن استلم بحق يوم القيامة وغير ذلك مما فى معناه وحكى القرطبي قولا إنها للتخيير أي مثلا لهذا وهذا وهذا مثل: جالس الحسن أو ابن سيرين. وكذا حكاه الرازي فى تفسيره وزاد قولا آخر أنها للإبهام بالنسبة إلى المخاطب كقول القائل أكلت خبزا أو تمرا وهو يعلم أيهما أكل وقال آخر إنها بمعنى قول القائل كل حلوا أو حامضا أي لا يخرج عن واحد منهما. أي وقلوبكم صارت كالحجارة أو أشد قسوة منها لا تخرج عن واحد من هذين الشيئين والله أعلم. " تنبيه" اختلف علماء العربية في معنى قوله تعالى "فهي كالحجارة أو أشد قسوة" بعد الإجماع على استحالة كونها للشك فقال بعضهم أو ههنا بمعنى الواو تقديره: فهي كالحجارة وأشد قسوة كقوله تعالى "ولا تطع منهم آثما أو كفورا" "عذرا أو نذرا" وكما قال النابغة الذبياني: قالت ألا ليتما هذا الحمام لنا إلى حمامتنا أو نصفه فقد تريد ونصفه قاله ابن جرير: وقال جرير بن عطية: نال الخلافة أو كانت له قدرا كما أتى ربه موسى على قدر قال ابن جرير يعني نال الخلافة وكانت له قدرا وقال آخرون أو ههنا بمعنى بل فتقديره: فهي كالحجارة بل أشد قسوة وكقوله "إذا فريق منهم يخشون الناس كخشية الله أو أشد خشية" وأرسلناه إلى مائة ألف أو يزيدون" "فكان قاب قوسين أو أدنى" وقال آخرون معنى ذلك "فهي كالحجارة أو أشد قسوة" عندكم حكاه ابن جرير: وقال آخرون المراد بذلك الإبهام على المخاطب كما قال أبو الأسود: أحب محمدا حبا شديدا وعباسا وحمزة والوصيا فإن يك حبهم رشدا أصبه وليس بمخطئ إن كان غيا قال ابن جرير قالوا ولا شك أن أبا الأسود لم يكن شاكا في أن حب من سمى رشد ولكنه أبهم على من خاطبه قال وقد ذكر عن أبي الأسود أنه لما قال هذه الأبيات قيل له شككت فقال كلا والله ثم انتزع يقول الله تعالى "وإنا أو إياكم لعلى هدى أو في ضلال مبين" فقال أوكان شاكا من أخبر بهذا من الهادي منهم ومن الضال؟ وقال بعضهم معنى ذلك فقلوبكم لا تخرج عن أحد هذين المثلين إما أن تكون مثل الحجارة في القسوة وإما أن تكون أشد منها فى القسوة. قال: ابن جرير ومعنى ذلك على هذا التأويل فبعضها كالحجارة قسوة وبعضها أشد قسوة من الحجارة وقد رجحه ابن جرير مع توجيه غيره "قلت" وهذا القول الأخير يبقى شبيها بقوله تعالى "مثلهم كمثل الذي استوقد نارا" مع قوله "أو كصيب من السماء" وكقوله "والذين كفروا أعمالهم كسراب بقيعة" مع قوله "أو كظلمات في بحر لجي" الآية أي إن منهم من هو هكذا ومنهم من هو كهذا والله أعلم. وقال الحافظ أبو بكر بن مردويه حدثنا محمد بن أحمد بن إبراهيم حدثنا محمد بن أيوب حدثنا محمد بن عبدالله بن أبي الثلج حدثنا علي بن حفص حدثنا إبراهيم بن عبدالله بن حاطب عن عبدالله بن دينار عن ابن عمر أن رسول الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم - قال: "لا تكثروا الكلام بغير ذكر الله فإن كثرة الكلام بغير ذكر الله قسوة القلب وإن أبعد الناس من الله القلب القاسي". رواه الترمذي في كتابه الزهد من جامعه عن محمد بن عبدالله بن أبي الثلج صاحب الإمام أحمد به ومن وجه آخر عن إبراهيم بن عبدالله بن الحارث بن حاطب به وقال غريب لا نعرفه إلا من حديث إبراهيم. وروى البزار عن أنس مرفوعا "أربع من الشقاء جمود العين وقساوة القلب وطول الأمل والحرص على الدنيا".

The Harshness of the Jews

Allah criticized the Children of Israel because they witnessed the tremendous signs and the Ayat of Allah, including bringing the dead back to life, yet,

ثُمَّ قَسَتْ قُلُوبُكُمْ مِّن بَعْدِ ذلِكَ

(Then after that your hearts were hardened).

So their hearts were like stones that never become soft. This is why Allah forbade the believers from imitating the Jews when He said,

أَلَمْ يَأْنِ لِلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ أَن تَخْشَعَ قُلُوبُهُمْ لِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ وَمَا نَزَلَ مِنَ الْحَقِّ وَلاَ يَكُونُواْ كَالَّذِينَ أُوتُواْ الْكِتَـبَ مِن قَبْلُ فَطَالَ عَلَيْهِمُ الاٌّمَدُ فَقَسَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ وَكَثِيرٌ مِّنْهُمْ فَـسِقُونَ

(Has not the time come for the hearts of those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah ـ Islamic Monotheism) to be affected by Allah's Reminder (this Qur'an), and that which has been revealed of the truth, lest they become as those who received the Scripture (the Tawrah) and the Injil (Gospel)) before (i.e. Jews and Christians), and the term was prolonged for them and so their hearts were hardened And many of them were Fasiqun (the rebellious, the disobedient to Allah)) (57:16). v In his Tafsir, Al-`Awfi said that Ibn `Abbas said, "When the dead man was struck with a part of the cow, he stood up and became more alive than he ever was. He was asked, `Who killed you' He said, `My nephews killed me.' He then died again. His nephews said, after Allah took his life away, `By Allah! We did not kill him' and denied the truth while they knew it. Allah said,

فَهِىَ كَالْحِجَارَةِ أَوْ أَشَدُّ قَسْوَةً

(And became as stones or even worse in hardness). "

And by the passage of time, the hearts of the Children of Israel were unlikely to accept any admonishment, even after the miracles and signs they withnessed. Their hearts became harder than stones, with no hope of ever softening. Sometimes, springs and rivers burst out of stones, some stones split and water comes out of them, even if there are no springs or rivers around them, sometimes stones fall down from mountaintops out of their fear of Allah. Muhammad bin Ishaq narrated that Ibn `Abbas said that,

وَإِنَّ مِنَ الْحِجَارَةِ لَمَا يَتَفَجَّرُ مِنْهُ الأَنْهَـرُ وَإِنَّ مِنْهَا لَمَا يَشَّقَّقُ فَيَخْرُجُ مِنْهُ الْمَآءُ وَإِنَّ مِنْهَا لَمَا يَهْبِطُ مِنْ خَشْيَةِ اللَّهِ

(And indeed, there are stones out of which rivers gush forth, and indeed, there are of them (stones) which split asunder so that water flows from them, and indeed, there are of them (stones) which fall down for fear of Allah), means, "Some stones are softer than your hearts, they acknowledge the truth that you are being called to,

وَمَا اللَّهُ بِغَـفِلٍ عَمَّا تَعْمَلُونَ

(And Allah is not unaware of what you do)."

Solid Inanimate Objects possess a certain Degree of Awareness

Some claimed that the Ayat mentioned the stones being humble as a metaphor. However, Ar-Razi, Al-Qurtubi and other Imams said that there is no need for this explanation, because Allah creates this characteristic - humbleness - in stones. For instance, Allah said,

إِنَّا عَرَضْنَا الاٌّمَانَةَ عَلَى السَّمَـوَتِ وَالاٌّرْضِ وَالْجِبَالِ فَأبَيْنَ أَن يَحْمِلْنَهَا وَأَشْفَقْنَ مِنْهَا

(Truly, We did offer Al-Amanah (the trust) to the heavens and the earth, and the mountains, but they declined to bear it and were afraid of it (i.e. afraid of Allah's torment)) (33:72),

تُسَبِّحُ لَهُ السَّمَـوَتُ السَّبْعُ وَالاٌّرْضُ وَمَن فِيهِنَّ

(The seven heavens and the earth and all that is therein, glorify Him) (17:44),

وَالنَّجْمُ وَالشَّجَرُ يَسْجُدَانِ

(And the stars and the trees both prostrate themselves (to Allah)) (55:6),

أَوَ لَمْيَرَوْاْ إِلَىخَلَقَ اللَّهُ مِن شَىْءٍ يَتَفَيَّأُ

(Have they not observed things that Allah has created: (how) their shadows incline) (16:48),

قَالَتَآ أَتَيْنَا طَآئِعِينَ

(They both said: "We come willingly.") (41:11),

لَوْ أَنزَلْنَا هَـذَا الْقُرْءَانَ عَلَى جَبَلٍ

(Had We sent down this Qur'an on a mountain) (59:21), and,

وَقَالُواْ لِجُلُودِهِمْ لِمَ شَهِدتُّمْ عَلَيْنَا قَالُواْ أَنطَقَنَا اللَّهُ

(And they will say to their skins, "Why do you testify against us" They will say: "Allah has caused us to speak.") (41:21).

It is recorded in the Sahih that the Prophet said,

«هذَا جَبَلٌ يُحِبُّنَا وَنُحِبُّه»

(This (Mount Uhud) is a mount that loves us and that we love.)

Similarly, the compassion of the stump of the palm tree for the Prophet as confirmed in authentic narrations. In Sahih Muslim it is recorded that the Prophet said,

«إِنِّي لَأَعْرِفُ حَجَرًا بِمَكَّةَ كَانَ يُسَلِّمُ عَلَيَّ قَبْلَ أَنْ أُبْعَثَ إِنِّي لَأَعْرِفُهُ الْآن»

(I know a stone in Makkah that used to greet me with the Salam before I was sent. I recognize this stone now.)

He said about the Black Stone that,

«إِنَّهُ يَشْهَدُ لِمَنِ اسْتَلَمَ بِحَقَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَة»

(On the Day of Resurrection it will testifiy for those who kiss it.)

There are several other texts with this meaning. The scholars of the Arabic language disagreed over the meaning of Allah's statement,

فَهِىَ كَالْحِجَارَةِ أَوْ أَشَدُّ قَسْوَةً

(And became as stones or even worse in hardness) after agreeing that `or' here is not being used to reflect doubt. Some scholars said that `or' here means, `and'. So the meaning becomes, "As hard as stones, and harder." For instance, Allah said,

وَلاَ تُطِعْ مِنْهُمْ ءَاثِماً أَوْ كَفُوراً

(And obey not a sinner or a disbeliever among them) (76:24), and,

عُذْراً أَوْ نُذْراً

(To cut off all excuses or to warn) (77:6).

Some other scholars said that `or' here means, `rather'. Hence, the meaning becomes, `As hard as stones. Rather, harder.' For instance, Allah said,

إِذَا فَرِيقٌ مِّنْهُمْ يَخْشَوْنَ النَّاسَ كَخَشْيَةِ اللَّهِ أَوْ أَشَدَّ خَشْيَةً

(A section of them fear men as they fear Allah or even more) (4:77),

وَأَرْسَلْنَـهُ إِلَى مِاْئَةِ أَلْفٍ أَوْ يَزِيدُونَ

(And We sent him to a hundred thousand (people) or even more) (37:147), and,

فَكَانَ قَابَ قَوْسَيْنِ أَوْ أَدْنَى

(And was at a distance of two bows' length or (even) nearer) (53:9).

Some other scholars said that this Ayah means their hearts are only of two types, as hard as stone or harder than stone. Further, Ibn Jarir commented that this Tafsir means that some of their hearts are as hard as stone and some hearts are harder than stone. Ibn Jarir said that he favored this last Tafsir, although the others are plausible. I - Ibn Kathir - say that the last Tafsir is similar to Allah's statement,

مَثَلُهُمْ كَمَثَلِ الَّذِى اسْتَوْقَدَ نَاراً

(Their likeness is as the likeness of one who kindled a fire) (2:17), and then His statement,

أَوْ كَصَيِّبٍ مِّنَ السَّمَآءِ

(Or like a rainstorm from the sky) (2:19).

It is also similar to Allah's statement,

وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ أَعْمَـلُهُمْ كَسَرَابٍ بِقِيعَةٍ

(As for those who disbelieved, their deeds are like a mirage in a desert) (24:39), and then His statement,

أَوْ كَظُلُمَـتٍ فِى بَحْرٍ لُّجِّىٍّ

(Or (the state of a disbeliever) is like the darkness in a vast deep sea) (24:40).

This then means that some of them are like the first example, and some others are like the second example. Allah knows best.

Then your hearts became hardened O you Jews they your hearts became stiffened against acceptance of the truth thereafter that is after what is mentioned of the bringing back to life of the slain man and the other signs before this; and they are like stones in their hardness or even yet harder than these; for there are stones from which rivers come gushing and others split yashshaqqaq the initial tā’ of the root-form yatashaqqaq has been assimilated with the shīn so that water issues from them; and others come down from on high in fear of God while your hearts are unmoved unstirred and not humbled; And God is not heedless of what you do but instead He gives you respite until your time comes ta‘malūna ‘you do’ a variant reading has ya‘malūna ‘they do’ indicating a shift to the third person address.

The Surah has been relating a number of incidents which show that the Israelites were always prone to disobedience and rebellion and had to undergo punishment again and again. Such an experience should have taught them humility and obedience. On the contrary, their hearts became all the more hardened against divine guidance. This insensibility led them into further misdeeds and transgressions. The present verse describes their degeneracy, and warns them that Allah knows everything they have been doing, and will punish them for their evil deeds.

In contrasting the hearts of the Israelites with stones, the verse refers to three states of the latter: (1) Some stones give forth a great amount of water. (2) Others give forth only a small quantity. (3) Still others do not give forth water, but fall down from their place for fear of Allah.

The first two of these states are a matter of everyday observation, but the third may be subject to doubt, for the ability to feel fear requires reason and sensibility, and the stones, as one supposes, do not possess these faculties. But reason is not always a necessary requisite for the ability to feel fear - after all, animals do feel fear, even though they do not possess reason. Sensibility is, of course, necessary. But there is no rational argument which should deny sensibility to minerals. For sensibility depends on life, and the minerals may possibly possess a kind of subtle life which man may not be aware of. In fact, scientists have recently discovered the signs of life and sensibility in minerals too. Anyhow, an explicit statement in the Holy Qur'an carries a validity and an authority which no physical science or rational argument can dispute.

Then, we do not claim that fear of Allah is always the only cause which makes a stone fall down. For, the Holy Qur'an itself says that this cause operates only in the case of some stones. So, there may be different causes which make stones fall down; some of these causes may be purely physical, while one of them may be the fear of Allah.

The order in which the three kinds of stones have been mentioned is very subtle, and, in view of the meaning and purpose intended, extremely expressive and significant. The verse places in the highest degree those stones whose affectivity is so strong that rivers gush forth from them, and provide sustenance to beasts and men. In contrast to them, it has been suggested, the hearts of the Jews are so hard that they are incapable of feeling any sympathy for their fellow-men even in suffering and pain, and hence incapable of wishing to do them good. In the second degree come the stones which do serve the creatures of Allah, but to a lesser extent. But the hearts of Jews are harder than even these. To the lowest degree of affectivity belong those stones which do not benefit anyone, but can at least 'feel' the fear of Allah. But the Jews are devoid of even this minimum degree of sensitivity.

Then your hearts became hardened after that, so they were like stones or even harder. And there are stones from which rivers come gushing, and among them are those that split and water comes forth from them, and among them are those that fall down in fear of God. In the case of the ignorant, the hardening of the heart is unkindness, lack of mercy, and distance from the path of the Real. In the case of the recognizers, the purifiers, and the limpid, hardening is the strength of the heart, the state of stability, the perfection of knowledge, and the state of limpid- ness. Abū Bakr used to show it from himself. Whenever he saw that someone was weeping and twisting in himself because of listening to the Qur'an, he would say, “I was like that until the hearts became hardened.” This hardening is an allusion to the perfection of the state of the recognizers and the majesty of the level of the sincerely truthful. At the beginning of the work and the outset of desire the beginners shout, wail, cry, and weep, for passion has not yet fully established its rulership. When the work reaches perfection, the limpidness of recognition becomes strong and the ruling power of passion fully establishes its rulership. Then that shouting and wailing are put aside, and joy and revelry arrive. With the tongue of their state they say, “At first when passion for that beauty was new my neighbors did not sleep at night because of my weeping. Now I weep less because my passion has increased- When fire takes over, there's little smoke.” There are stones from which rivers come gushing, and among them are those that split and water comes forth from them, and among them are those that fall down in fear of God. He made hard stones more excellent than cruel hearts and superior to them. He is saying, “Water comes from stone, and it becomes soft, and in fear of God it falls into the desert. But a cruel heart in the makeup of an estranged man does not moan in fear of God or weep in remorse, nor do mercy and tenderness enter into it.” The stories say that one of God's prophets was passing through a desert and saw a small stone from which was flowing a great deal of water, much greater than the measure of the stone. The prophet stood there and wondered at its state. “What is the state of this stone? What is this water flowing from it?” The Exalted Lord brought that stone into speech for him. It said, “O prophet of the Real! This water you see is my weeping. From the day it reached me that the Exalted Lord says, 'Its fuel is men and stones' [66:6], I have wept in remorse and fear.” The prophet said, “Lord God, give it security from the Fire!” Revelation came to him, “I have given it security from the Fire.” The prophet went away and came back another day. He saw that the stone was weeping just like before-the water was flowing. He remained in wonder at that. The Exalted Lord made the stone speak again. It said, “O prophet of God! Why do you wonder at my weeping? God has given me security from the Fire. My first weeping was from remorse and sorrow, but this weeping is from happiness and gratitude.” The Pir of the Tariqah said, “O God, I have a long weeping in my head. I do not know if I weep from remorse or from joy. Weeping from remorse is the portion of an orphan, weeping from joy the portion of a candle. What is it to weep from joy? That story is long.”
