2:271 Al-Baqara (The Cow)

أي: { إن تبدوا الصدقات } فتظهروها وتكون علانية حيث كان القصد بها وجه الله { فنعما هي } أي: فنعم الشيء { هي } لحصول المقصود بها { وإن تخفوها } أي: تسروها { وتؤتوها الفقراء فهو خير لكم } ففي هذا أن صدقة السر على الفقير أفضل من صدقة العلانية، وأما إذا لم تؤت الصدقات الفقراء فمفهوم الآية أن السر ليس خيرا من العلانية، فيرجع في ذلك إلى المصلحة، فإن كان في إظهارها إظهار شعائر الدين وحصول الاقتداء ونحوه، فهو أفضل من الإسرار، ودل قوله: { وتؤتوها الفقراء } على أنه ينبغي للمتصدق أن يتحرى بصدقته المحتاجين، ولا يعطي محتاجا وغيره أحوج منه، ولما ذكر تعالى أن الصدقة خير للمتصدق ويتضمن ذلك حصول الثواب قال: { ويكفر عنكم من سيئاتكم } ففيه دفع العقاب { والله بما تعملون خبير } من خير وشر، قليل وكثير والمقصود من ذلك المجازاة.

وقوله "إن تبدوا الصدقات فنعما هي" أي إن أظهرتموها فنعم شيء هي. وقوله "وإن تخفوها وتؤتوها الفقراء فهو خير لكم" فيه دلالة على أن إسرار الصدقة أفضل من إظهارها لأنه أبعد عن الرياء إلا أن يترتب على الإظهار مصلحة راجحة من اقتداء الناس به فيكون أفضل من هذه الحيثية وقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم الجاهر بالقرآن كالجاهر بالصدقة والمسر بالقرآن كالمسر بالصدقة والأصل أن الإسرار أفضل لهذه الآية ولما ثبت في الصحيحين عن أبي هريرة قال: قال رسول الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم - سبعة يظلهم الله في ظله يوم لا ظل إلا ظله: إمام عادل وشاب نشأ في عبادة الله ورجلان تحابا في الله اجتمعا عليه وتفرقا عليه ورجل قلبه معلق بالمسجد إذا خرج منه حتى يرجع إليه ورجل ذكر الله خاليا ففاضت عيناه ورجل دعته امرأة ذات منصب وجمال فقال إني أخاف الله رب العالمين ورجل تصدق بصدقة فأخفاها حتى لا تعلم شماله ما تنفق يمينه وقال الإمام أحمد: حدثنا يزيد بن هارون أخبرنا العوام بن حوشب عن سليمان بن أبي سليمان عن أنس بن مالك عن النبي - صلى الله تعالى عليه وعلى آله وسلم - قال لما خلق الله الأرض جعلت تميد فخلق الجبال فألقاها عليها فاستقرت فتعجبت الملائكة من خلق الجبال فقالت: يا رب هل في خلقك شيء أشد من الجبال؟ قال نعم الحديد قالت: يا رب فهل من خلقك شيء أشد من الحديد قال: نعم النار قالت: يا رب فهل من خلقك شيء أشد من النار؟ قال: نعم الماء قالت: يا رب فهل من خلقك شيء أشد من الماء؟ قال: نعم الريح قالت: يا رب فهل من خلقك شيء أشد من الريح؟ قال: نعم ابن آدم يتصدق بيمنه فيخفيها من شماله وقد ذكرنا في فضل آية الكرسي عن أبي ذر قال: قلت يا رسول الله أي الصدقة أفضل؟ قال سر إلى فقير أو جهد من مقل ورواه أحمد ورواه ابن أبي حاتم من طريق علي بن يزيد عن القاسم عن أبي أمامة عن أبي ذر فذكره وزاد ثم شرع في هذه الآية "إن تبدوا الصدقات فنعما هي وإن تخفوها وتؤتوها الفقراء فهو خير لكم" الآية وفي الحديث المروي صدقة السر تطفئ غضب الرب عز وجل وقال ابن أبي حاتم: حدثنا أبي حدثنا الحسين بن زياد المحاربي مؤدب محارب أنا موسى بن عمير عن عامر الشعبي في قوله "إن تبدوا الصدقات فنعما هي وإن تخفوها وتؤتوها الفقراء فهو خير لكم" قال: أنزلت في أبي بكر وعمر رضي الله عنهما أما عمر فجاء بنصف ماله حتى دفعه إلى النبي - صلى الله عليه وسلم - فقال له النبي - صلى الله عليه وسلم - ما خلفت وراءك لأهلك يا عمر قال: خلفت لهم نصف مالي وأما أبو بكر فجاء بماله كله يكاد أن يخفيه من نفسه حتى دفعه إلى النبي - صلى الله عليه وسلم - فقال له النبي - صلى الله عليه وسلم - ما خلفت وراءك لأهلك يا أبا بكر؟ فقال عدة الله وعدة رسوله فبكى عمر رضي الله عنه وقال بأبي أنت وأمي يا أبا بكر والله ما استبقنا إلى باب خير قط إلا كنت سابقا وهذا الحديث روي من وجه آخر عن عمر - رضي الله عنه - وإنما أوردناه ههنا لقول الشعبي إن الآية نزلت في ذلك ثم إن الآية عامة في أن إخفاء الصدقة أفضل سواء كانت مفروضة أو مندوبة لكن روى ابن جرير من طريق علي بن أبي طلحة عن ابن عباس في تفسير هذه الآية قال: جعل الله صدقة السر في التطوع تفضل علانيتها يقال بسبعين ضعفا وجعل صدقة الفريضة علانيتها أفضل من سرها يقال بخمسة وعشرين ضعفا. وقوله "ويكفر عنكم من سيئاتكم" أي بدل الصدقات ولا سيما إذا كانت سرا يحصل لكم الخير في رفع الدرجات ويكفر عنكم السيئات وقد قرئ ويكفر بالجزم عطفا على محل جواب الشرط وهو قوله "فنعما هي" كقوله فأصدق وأكون وأكن وقوله "والله بما تعملون خبير" أي لا يخفى عليه من ذلك شيء وسيجزيكم عليه.

Allah states that He has perfect knowledge of the good deeds performed by all of His creation, such as charity and various vows, and He rewards tremendously for these deeds, provided they are performed seeking His Face and His promise. Allah also warns those who do not work in his obedience, but instead disobey His command, reject His revelation and worship others besides Him:

وَمَا لِلظَّـلِمِينَ مِنْ أَنصَارٍ

(And for the wrongdoers there are no helpers.) meaning, who will save them from Allah's anger and torment on the Day of Resurrection.

The Virtue of Disclosing or Concealing Charity

Allah said,

إِن تُبْدُواْ الصَّدَقَـتِ فَنِعِمَّا هِىَ

(If you disclose your Sadaqat, it is well) meaning, "It is well if you make known the charity that you give away."

Allah's statement,

وَإِن تُخْفُوهَا وَتُؤْتُوهَا الْفُقَرَآءَ فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ

(But if you conceal them and give them to the poor, that is better for you.) this indicates that concealing charity is better than disclosing it, because it protects one from showing off and boasting. However, if there is an apparent wisdom behind disclosing the charity, such as the people imitating this righteous act, then disclosing it becomes better than concealing it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,

«الْجَاهِرُ بِالْقُرْآنِ كَالْجَاهِرِ بِالصَّدَقَةِ، وَالْمُسِرُّ بِالْقُرآنِ كَالْمُسِرِّ بِالصَّدَقَة»

(He who utters aloud Qur'anic recitation is just like he who discloses charity acts. He who conceals Qur'anic recitation is just like he who conceals charity acts.)

The Ayah indicates that it is better that acts of charity be concealed, as reiterated by the Hadith that the Two Sahihs recorded from Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,

«سَبْعَةٌ يُظِلُّهُمُ اللهُ فِي ظِلِّهِ يَوْمَ لَا ظِلَّ إلَّا ظِلُّهُ: إِمَامٌ عَادِلٌ، وَشَابٌّ نَشَأَ فِي عِبَادَةِ اللهِ، وَرَجُلَانِ تَحَابَّا فِي اللهِ،اجْتَمَعَا عَلَيْهِ وَتَفَرَّقَا عَلَيْهِ، وَرَجُلٌ قَلْبُهُ مُعَلَّقٌ بِالْمَسْجِدِ، إِذَا خَرَجَ مِنْهُ حَتَّى يَرْجِعَ إِلَيْهِ، وَرَجُلٌ ذَكَرَ اللهَ خَالِيًا فَفَاضَتْ عَيْنَاهُ، وَرَجُلٌ دَعَتْهُ امْرَأَةٌ ذَاتُ مَنْصِبٍ وَجَمَالٍ، فَقَالَ: إِنِّي أَخَافُ اللهَ رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ، وَرَجُلٌ تَصَدَّقَ بِصَدَقَةٍ فَأَخْفَاهَا، حَتَّى لَا تَعْلَمَ شِمَالُهُ مَا تُنْفِقُ يَمِينُه»

(Allah will give shade to seven on the Day when there will be no shade but His. (They are:) a just ruler, a youth who has been brought up in the worship of Allah, two persons who love each other only for Allah's sake who meet and part in Allah's cause only, a man whose heart is attached to the Masjids from the time he departs the Masjid until he returns to it, a person who remembers Allah in seclusion and his eyes are then flooded with tears, a man who refuses the call of a charming woman of noble birth for illicit intercourse with her and says, `I fear Allah, Lord of the worlds', and a man who gives charitable gifts so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand has given.)

Allah's statement,

وَيُكَفِّرُ عَنكُم مِّن سَيِّئَاتِكُمْ

((Allah) will expiate you some of your sins) means, in return for giving away charity, especially if it was concealed. Therefore, you will gain goodness by your rank being raised, and your sins being forgiven.

Allah's statement,

وَاللَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ خَبِيرٌ

(And Allah is Well-Acquainted with what you do) means, "No good deed that you perform escapes His knowledge, and He shall reward for it."

If you proclaim make manifest your voluntary almsgivings that is your supererogatory deeds it is a fine thing to show them; but if you conceal them and give them to the poor that is even better for you than making them manifest or giving it to the rich. As regards the obligatory almsgiving it is better to make it manifest so that it serves as an example and so that one is not accused falsely of not giving; as regards giving it to the poor this is obligatory; and it will absolve you of some of your evil deeds read yukaffir ‘it will absolve’ or nukaffir ‘We will absolve’ either in apocopated form with no final vowel yukaffir nukaffir being a supplement to the locus of fa-huwa ‘that is’ or with nominative inflection yukaffiru nukaffiru indicating the beginning of a new sentence. God is aware of what you do knowing its inner and outer aspects nothing of it being hidden from Him.

(5) Verse 271: إِن تُبْدُوا الصَّدَقَاتِ فَنِعِمَّا هِيَ (الی قولہ) وَاللَّـهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ خَبِير : "If you give the alms openly, it is good enough, ... and Allah is All-Aware of what you do"

Obviously, this verse covers all types of charity, whether obligatory or supererogatory, and it is more preferable to perform all of them as secretly as possible. To observe secrecy in a charitable act has religious merits, because it is far from the possibility of riya' ریاء (show off), and more graceful for the receiver who can feel shy about receiving charity in public. It is also beneficial from an earthly point of view, because it does not disclose the amount of wealth one owns.

It should, however, be kept in mind that the preferability of observing secrecy is a matter of principle. There may be situations where it becomes more preferable to perform an act of charity openly for some external reasons, such as removing some accusation (of not paying زکاۃ Zakah, for instance) or to persuade others to follow the example. Such exceptional cases do not negate the basic principle in any way.

Immediately after the instruction of concealing the 'Sadaqat صداقات ', the holy verse says, وَيُكَفِّرُ‌ عَنكُم مِّن سَيِّئَاتِكُمْ (This will write off part of your sins). It does not mean that the expiation of evil-deeds is confined to the charity made in secret only. In fact, a charity made in public also carries the same benefit. But the reference to expiation here is in the context that even if someone feels a secret charity as useless in this world, he should not feel depressed, because Allah will forgive his sins, and that is a great gain for him.

(If ye publish your almsgiving�) [2:271]. Said al-Kalbi: �When the saying of Allah, exalted is He, (And whatsoever good thing ye spend�) [2:272], the Companions asked: �O Messenger of Allah! Is giving alms in secret better or giving it in the open?� In response Allah revealed this verse�.
