2:256 Al-Baqara (The Cow)

يخبر تعالى أنه لا إكراه في الدين لعدم الحاجة إلى الإكراه عليه، لأن الإكراه لا يكون إلا على أمر خفية أعلامه، غامضة أثاره، أو أمر في غاية الكراهة للنفوس، وأما هذا الدين القويم والصراط المستقيم فقد تبينت أعلامه للعقول، وظهرت طرقه، وتبين أمره، وعرف الرشد من الغي، فالموفق إذا نظر أدنى نظر إليه آثره واختاره، وأما من كان سيئ القصد فاسد الإرادة، خبيث النفس يرى الحق فيختار عليه الباطل، ويبصر الحسن فيميل إلى القبيح، فهذا ليس لله حاجة في إكراهه على الدين، لعدم النتيجة والفائدة فيه، والمكره ليس إيمانه صحيحا، ولا تدل الآية الكريمة على ترك قتال الكفار المحاربين، وإنما فيها أن حقيقة الدين من حيث هو موجب لقبوله لكل منصف قصده اتباع الحق، وأما القتال وعدمه فلم تتعرض له، وإنما يؤخذ فرض القتال من نصوص أخر، ولكن يستدل في الآية الكريمة على قبول الجزية من غير أهل الكتاب، كما هو قول كثير من العلماء، فمن يكفر بالطاغوت فيترك عبادة ما سوى الله وطاعة الشيطان، ويؤمن بالله إيمانا تاما أوجب له عبادة ربه وطاعته { فقد استمسك بالعروة الوثقى } أي: بالدين القويم الذي ثبتت قواعده ورسخت أركانه، وكان المتمسك به على ثقة من أمره، لكونه استمسك بالعروة الوثقى التي { لا انفصام لها } وأما من عكس القضية فكفر بالله وآمن بالطاغوت، فقد أطلق هذه العروة الوثقى التي بها العصمة والنجاة، واستمسك بكل باطل مآله إلى الجحيم { والله سميع عليم } فيجازي كلا منهما بحسب ما علمه منهم من الخير والشر، وهذا هو الغاية لمن استمسك بالعروة الوثقى ولمن لم يستمسك بها.

يقول تعالى "لا إكراه في الدين" أي لا تكرهوا أحدا على الدخول في دين الإسلام فإنه بين واضح جلي دلائله وبراهينه لا يحتاج إلى أن يكره أحد على الدخول فيه بل من هداه الله للإسلام وشرح صدره ونور بصيرته دخل فيه على بينه ومن أعمى الله قلبه وختم على سمعه وبصره فإنه لا يفيده الدخول في الدين مكرها مقسورا وقد ذكروا أن سبب نزول هذه الآية في قوم من الأنصار وإن كان حكمها عاما وقال ابن جرير: حدثنا ابن يسار حدثنا ابن أبي عدي عن شعبة عن أبي بشر عن سعيد بن جبير عن ابن عباس قال: كانت المرأة تكون مقلاة فتجعل على نفسها إن عاش لها ولد أن تهوده فلما أجليت بنو النضير كان فيهم من أبناء الأنصار فقالوا: لا ندع أبناءنا فأنزل الله عز وجل "لا إكراه في الدين قد تبين الرشد من الغي" وقد رواه أبو داود والنسائي جميعا عن بندار به ومن وجوه أخر عن شعبة به نحوه وقد رواه ابن أبي حاتم وابن حبان في صحيحه من حديث شعبة به وهكذا ذكر مجاهد وسعيد بن جبير والشعبي والحسن البصري وغيرهم أنها نزلت في ذلك وقال محمد بن إسحق عن محمد بن أبي محمد الجرشي عن زيد بن ثابت عن عكرمة أو عن سعيد عن ابن عباس قوله "لا إكراه في الدين" قال: نزلت في رجل من الأنصار من بني سالم بن عوف يقال له الحصيني كان له ابنان نصرانيان وكان هو رجلا مسلما فقال للنبي - صلى الله عليه وسلم - ألا أستكرههما فإنهما قد أبيا إلا النصرانية فأنزل الله فيه ذلك رواه ابن جرير وروى السدي نحو ذلك وزاد وكانا قد تنصرا على أيدي تجار قدموا من الشام يحملون زبيبا فلما عزما على الذهاب معهم أراد أبوهما أن يستكرههما وطلب من رسول الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم - أن يبعث في آثارهما فنزلت هذه الآية وقال ابن أبي حاتم: حدثنا أبي حدثنا عمرو بن عوف أخبرنا شريك عن أبي هلال عن أسبق قال: كنت في دينهم مملوكا نصرانيا لعمر بن الخطاب فكان يعرض علي الإسلام فآبى فيقول "لا إكراه في الدين" ويقول يا أسبق لو أسلمت لاستعنا بك على بعض أمور المسلمين وقد ذهب طائفة كثيرة من العلماء أن هذه محمولة على أهل الكتاب ومن دخل في دينهم قبل النسخ والتبديل إذا بذلوا الجزية وقال آخرون: بل هي منسوخة بآية القتال وأنه يجب أن يدعى جميع الأمم إلى الدخول في الدين الحنيف دين الإسلام فإن أبى أحد منهم الدخول ولم ينقد له أو يبذل الجزية قوتل حتى يقتل وهذا معنى لا إكراه قال الله تعالى "ستدعون إلى قوم أولي بأس شديد تقاتلونهم أو يسلمون" وقال تعالى "يا أيها النبي جاهد الكفار والمنافقين واغلظ عليهم" وقال تعالى "يا أيها الذين آمنوا قاتلوا الذين يلونكم من الكفار وليجدوا فيكم غلظة واعلموا أن الله مع المتقين" وفي الصحيح عجب ربك من قوم يقادون إلى الجنة في السلاسل يعني الأسارى الذين يقدم بهم بلاد الإسلام في الوثائق والأغلال والقيود والأكبال ثم بعد ذلك يسلمون وتصلح أعمالهم وسرائرهم فيكونوا من أهل الجنة فأما الحديث الذي رواه الإمام أحمد حدثنا يحيى عن حميد عن أنس أن رسول الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم - قال لرجل أسلم قال إنى أجدني كارها قال وإن كنت كارها فإنه ثلاثي صحيح ولكن ليس من هذا القبيل فإنه لم يكرهه النبي - صلى الله عليه وسلم - على الإسلام بل دعاه إليه فأخبره أن نفسه ليست قابلة له بل هي كارهة فقال له أسلم وإن كنت كارها فإن الله سيرزقك حسن النية والإخلاص. وقوله "فمن يكفر بالطاغوت ويؤمن بالله فقد استمسك بالعروة الوثقى لا انفصام لها والله سميع عليم" أي من خلع الأنداد والأوثان وما يدعو إليه الشيطان من عبادة كل ما يعبد من دون الله ووحد الله فعبده وحده وشهد أن لا إله إلا هو "فقد استمسك بالعروة الوثقى" أي فقد ثبت في أمره واستقام على الطريقة المثلى والصراط المستقيم قال أبو القاسم البغوي: حدثنا أبو روح البلدي حدثنا أبو الأحوص سلام بن سليم عن أبي إسحق عن حسان هو ابن قائد العبسي قال: قال عمر - رضي الله عنه - إن الجبت السحر والطاغوت الشيطان وإن الشجاعة والجبن غرائز تكون في الرجال يقاتل الشجاع عمن لا يعرف ويفر الجبان من أمه وإن كرم الرجل دينه وحسبه خلقه وإن كان فارسيا أو نبطيا وهكذا رواه ابن جرير وابن أبي حاتم من حديث الثوري عن أبي إسحق عن حسان بن قائد العبسي عن عمر فذكره ومعنى قوله في الطاغوت إنه الشيطان قوي جدا فإنه يشمل كل شر كان عليه أهل الجاهلية من عبادة الأوثان والتحاكم إليها والاستنصار بها. وقوله "فقد استمسك بالعروة الوثقى لا انفصام لها" أي فقد استمسك من الدين بأقوى سبب وشبه ذلك بالعروة الوثقى التي لا تنفصم هي في نفسها محكمة مبرمة قوية وربطها قوي شديد ولهذا قال "فقد استمسك بالعروة الوثقى لا انفصام لها" الآية قال مجاهد: العروة الوثقى يعني الإيمان وقال السدي: هو الإسلام وقال سعيد بن جبير والضحاك: يعني لا إله إلا الله وعن أنس بن مالك العروة الوثقى القرآن وعن سالم بن أبي الجعد قال هو الحب في الله والبغض في الله وكل هذه الأقوال صحيحة ولا تنافي بينها وقال معاذ بن جبل في قوله "لا انفصام لها" دون دخول الجنة وقال مجاهد وسعيد بن جبير "فقد استمسك بالعروة الوثقى لا انفصام لها" ثم قرأ "إن الله لا يغير ما بقوم حتى يغيروا ما بأنفسهم" وقال الإمام أحمد: أنبأنا إسحق بن يوسف حدثنا ابن عوف عن محمد بن قيس بن عبادة قال: كنت في المسجد فجاء رجل في وجهه أثر من خشوع فصلى ركعتين أوجز فيهما فقال القوم هذا رجل من أهل الجنة فلما خرج اتبعته حتى دخل منزله فدخلت معه فحدثته فلما استأنس قلت له إن القوم لما دخلت المسجد قالوا كذا وكذا قال سبحان الله ما ينبغي لأحد أن يقول ما لا يعلم وسأحدثك لم: إنى رأيت رؤيا على عهد رسول الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم - فقصصتها عليه رأيت كأني في روضة خضراء - قال ابن عون فذكر من خضرتها وسعتها - وفي وسطها عمود حديد أسفله في الأرض وأعلاه في السماء في أعلاه عروة فقيل لي اصعد عليه فقلت لا أستطيع فجاءني منصف - قال ابن عون هو الوصيف - فرفع ثيابي من خلفي فقال اصعد فصعدت حتى أخذت بالعروة فقال استمسك بالعروة فاستيقظت وإنها لفي يدي فأتيت رسول الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم - فقصصتها عليه فقال أما الروضة فروضة الإسلام وأما العمود فعمود الإسلام وأما العروة فهي العروة الوثقى أنت على الإسلام حتى تموت قال وهو عبدالله بن سلام أخرجاه في الصحيحين من حديث عبدالله بن عون فقمت إليه وأخرجه البخاري من وجه آخر عن محمد بن سيرين به. "طريق أخرى وسياق آخر" قال الإمام أحمد: أنبأنا حسن بن موسى وعثمان قالا: أنبأنا حماد بن سلمة عن عاصم بن بهدلة عن المسيب بن رافع عن خرشة بن الحر قال: قدمت المدينة فجلست إلى مشيخة في مسجد النبي - صلى الله عليه وسلم - فجاء شيخ يتوكأ على عصا له فقال القوم: من سره أن ينظر إلى رجل من أهل الجنة فلينظر إلى هذا فقام خلف سارية فصلى ركعتين فقلت له: قال بعض القوم كذا وكذا فقال: الجنة لله يدخلها من يشاء وإني رأيت على عهد رسول الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم - رؤيا كأن رجلا أتاني فقال انطلق فذهبت معه فسلك بي منهجا عظيما فعرضت لي طريق عن يساري فأردت أن أسلكها فقال: إنك لست من أهلها ثم عرضت لي طريق عن يميني فسلكتها حتى انتهت إلى جبل زلق فأخذ بيدي فدحا بي فإذا أنا على ذروته فلم أتقار ولم أتماسك فإذا عمود حديد في ذروته حلقة من ذهب فأخذ بيدي فدحا بي حتى أخذت بالعروة فقال: استمسك فقلت نعم فضرب العمود برجله فاستمسك بالعروة فقصصتها على رسول الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم - فقال رأيت خيرا أما المنهج العظيم فالمحشر وأما الطريق التي عرضت عن يسارك فطريق أهل النار ولست من أهلها وأما الطريق التي عرضت عن يمينك فطريق أهل الجنة وأما الجبل الزلق فمنزل الشهداء وأما العروة التي استمسكت بها فعروة الإسلام فاستمسك بها حتى تموت قال فإنما أرجو أن أكون من أهل الجنة. قال: وإذا هو عبدالله بن سلام وهكذا رواه النسائي عن أحمد بن سليمان عن عفان وابن ماجه عن أبي بكر بن أبي شيبة عن الحسن بن موسى الأشيب كلاهما عن حماد بن سلمة به نحوه وأخرجه مسلم في صحيحه من حديث الأعمش عن سليمان بن مسهر عن خرشة بن الحر الفزاري به.

No Compulsion in Religion

Allah said,

لاَ إِكْرَاهَ فِى الدِّينِ

(There is no compulsion in religion), meaning, "Do not force anyone to become Muslim, for Islam is plain and clear, and its proofs and evidence are plain and clear. Therefore, there is no need to force anyone to embrace Islam. Rather, whoever Allah directs to Islam, opens his heart for it and enlightens his mind, will embrace Islam with certainty. Whoever Allah blinds his heart and seals his hearing and sight, then he will not benefit from being forced to embrace Islam."

It was reported that the Ansar were the reason behind revealing this Ayah, although its indication is general in meaning. Ibn Jarir recorded that Ibn `Abbas said that before Islam, "When (an Ansar) woman would not bear children who would live, she would vow that if she gives birth to a child who remains alive, she would raise him as a Jew. When Banu An-Nadir (the Jewish tribe) were evacuated from Al-Madinah, some of the children of the Ansar were being raised among them, and the Ansar said, `We will not abandon our children.' Allah revealed,

لاَ إِكْرَاهَ فِى الدِّينِ قَد تَّبَيَّنَ الرُّشْدُ مِنَ الْغَيِّ

(There is no compulsion in religion. Verily, the right path has become distinct from the wrong path.)"

Abu Dawud and An-Nasa'i also recorded this Hadith. As for the Hadith that Imam Ahmad recorded, in which Anas said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to a man,

«أَسْلِم»

قَالَ: إِنِّي أَجِدُنِي كَارِهًا قَالَ:

«وَإِنْ كُنْتَ كَارِهًا»

("Embrace Islam." The man said, "I dislike it." The Prophet said, "Even if you dislike it.")

First, this is an authentic Hadith, with only three narrators between Imam Ahmad and the Prophet . However, it is not relevant to the subject under discussion, for the Prophet did not force that man to become Muslim. The Prophet merely invited this man to become Muslim, and he replied that he does not find himself eager to become Muslim. The Prophet said to the man that even though he dislikes embracing Islam, he should still embrace it, `for Allah will grant you sincerity and true intent.'

Tawhid is the Most Trustworthy Handhold

Allah's statement,

فَمَنْ يَكْفُرْ بِالطَّـغُوتِ وَيُؤْمِن بِاللَّهِ فَقَدِ اسْتَمْسَكَ بِالْعُرْوَةِ الْوُثْقَى لاَ انفِصَامَ لَهَا وَاللَّهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ

(Whoever disbelieves in Taghut and believes in Allah, then he has grasped the most trustworthy handhold that will never break. And Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower) is in reference to, "Whoever shuns the rivals of Allah, the idols, and those that Shaytan calls to be worshipped besides Allah, whoever believes in Allah's Oneness, worships Him alone and testifies that there is no deity worthy of worship except Him, then

فَقَدِ اسْتَمْسَكَ بِالْعُرْوَةِ الْوُثْقَى

(then he has grasped the most trustworthy handhold.)

Therefore, this person will have acquired firmness in the religion and proceeded on the correct way and the straight path. Abu Al-Qasim Al-Baghawi recorded that `Umar said, "Jibt means magic, and Taghut means Shaytan. Verily, courage and cowardice are two instincts that appear in men, the courageous fights for those whom he does not know and the coward runs away from defending his own mother. Man's honor resides with his religion and his status is based upon his character, even if he was Persian or Nabatian." `Umar's statement that Taghut is Shaytan is very sound, for this meaning includes every type of evil that the ignorant people of Jahiliyyah (pre Islamic era of ignorace) fell into, such as worshipping idols, referring to them for judgement, and invoking them for victory.

Allah's statement,

فَقَدِ اسْتَمْسَكَ بِالْعُرْوَةِ الْوُثْقَى لاَ انفِصَامَ لَهَا

(then he has grasped the most trustworthy handhold that will never break) means, "He will have hold of the true religion with the strongest grasp." Allah equated this adherence to the firm handhold that never breaks because it is built solid and because its handle is firmly connected. This is why Allah said here,

فَقَدِ اسْتَمْسَكَ بِالْعُرْوَةِ الْوُثْقَى لاَ انفِصَامَ لَهَا

(then he has grasped the most trustworthy handhold that will never break.)

Mujahid said, "The most trustworthy handhold is Iman (faith)." As-Suddi said that it refers to Islam. Imam Ahmad recorded that Qays bin `Abbad said, "I was in the Masjid when a man whose face showed signs of humbleness came and prayed two Rak`ahs that were modest in length. The people said, `This is a man from among the people of Paradise.' When he left, I followed him until he entered his house, and I entered it after him and spoke with him. When he felt at ease, I said to him, `When you entered the Masjid, the people said such and such things.' He said, `All praise is due to Allah! No one should say what he has no knowledge of. I will tell you why they said that. I saw a vision during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I narrated it to him. I saw that I was in a green garden, ' and he described the garden's plants and spaciousness, `and there was an iron pole in the middle of the garden affixed in the earth and its tip reached the sky. On its tip, there was a handle, and I was told to ascend the pole. I said, `I cannot.' Then a helper came and raised my robe from behind and said to me, `Ascend.' I ascended until I grasped the handle and he said to me, `Hold on to the handle.' I awoke from that dream with the handle in my hand. I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him about the vision and he said,

«أَمَّا الرَّوْضَةُ فَرَوْضَةُ الْإِسْلَامِ، وَأَمَّا الْعَمُودُ فَعَمُودُ الْإِسْلَامِ، وَأَمَّا الْعُرْوَةُ فَهِيَ الْعُرْوَةُ الْوُثْقَى، أَنْتَ عَلَى الْإِسْلَامِ حَتَّى تَمُوت»

(As for the garden, it represents Islam; as for the pole, it represents the pillar of Islam; and the handle represents the most trustworthy handhold. You shall remain Muslim until you die.)

This Companion was `Abdullah bin Salam."

This Hadith was also collected in the Two Sahihs; and Al-Bukhari also recorded it with another chain of narration.

There is no compulsion in entering into religion. Rectitude has become clear from error that is say through clear proofs it has become manifest that faith is rectitude and disbelief is error this was revealed concerning the Ansār of Medina who tried to compel their sons to enter into Islam; so whoever disbelieves in the false deity namely Satan or idols tāghūt ‘false deity’ is used in a singular and plural sense and believes in God has laid hold of the most firm handle the tight knot unbreaking that cannot be severed; God is Hearing of what is said Knowing of what is done.

Commentary

One who holds on to Islam firmly stays protected against destruction and deprivation. It was for this reason that such a person was likened to one who holds on firmly to the 'ring', the looped support of a strong rope, and thus manages to avoid falling down. As there is no danger of such a rope breaking apart and causing a fall, so there is no danger of destruction or loss in Islam -- should somebody just abandon the rope, that would be an entirely different matter. And should somebody abandon Islam itself, that would be an entirely different matter too. (Maulana Thanavi (رح) : Bayin al-Qur'an).

Keeping this verse in view, some people raise objections. They say this verse tells us that there is no compulsion in faith, although the teaching of jihad جھاد and qital قتال (fighting) in Islam appears contrary to this principle.

Looking at this a little carefully, we can find out that the objection is not valid, since the teaching of jihad and qital in Islam is not to coerce people into accepting Faith. Had it been so, why would there be Islamic injunctions of jizyah جزیہ to provide an umbrella of security for kuffar (disbelievers) which protects their life, property and honour? In fact, this is to remove disorder, strife or fasad فساد ، for Allah Almighty dislikes fasad فساد ، which is what the kuffar are after. Therefore, Allah Almighty says:

وَيَسْعَوْنَ فِي الْأَرْ‌ضِ فَسَادًا ۚ وَاللَّـهُ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمُفْسِدِينَ

And they go about the earth spreading disorder and Allah does not like those who spread disorder. (5:64)

It is for this reason that Allah Almighty has ordained that the fasad فساد created by these people should be removed by جھاد and qital قتال . So, killing such people is like the killing of serpents, scorpions and their harmful likes.

Islam has firmly banned the killing of women, children, the aged and the crippled etc., even in the heat of jihad on the battlefield, since they are incapable of creating disorder. Similarly, it has stopped the killing of those who become law-abiding citizens by promising to pay jizyah جزیہ (compensatory dues paid by free non-Muslims under Muslim rule against guarantee of the security of their life, property and honour).

This approach of Islam makes it clear that it does not force people to accept and enter Faith, rather far from it, by using it as a method of stopping oppression in the world, it hopes to establish justice and

equity and peace and security. When Sayyidna ` Umar ؓ invited an old Christian woman to accept Islam, she said in reply: انا عجوز کبیرۃ واموت الی قریب : 'I am an old woman nearing death.' Hearing this, Sayyidna ` Umar ؓ did not force her to come into the fold of Islam. In fact, he recited this very verse: لَا إِكْرَ‌اهَ فِي الدِّينِ that is, 'there is no compulsion in Faith.'

Really and truly, coercion and compulsion to make one accept a faith are not possible at all because faith is not related to outward physical response; it relates to the heart. Coercion and compulsion affect nothing but the outsides of physique and this is all that is affected by jihad and qital قتال (fighting in the way of Allah). Consequently, it is just not possible that people can be forced to accept faith through these measures. This proves that the verses of jihad and qital قتال are not contradictory to the verse: لَا إِكْرَ‌اهَ فِي الدِّينِ (There is no compulsion in

Faith). (Mazhari, Qurtubi)

(There is no compulsion in religion�) [2:256]. Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Ja'far al-Muzakki informed us> Zahir ibn Ahmad> al-Husayn ibn Muhammad ibn Mus'ab> Yahya ibn Hakim> Ibn Abi 'Adiyy> Shu'bah> Abu Bishr> Sa'id ibn Jubayr> Ibn 'Abbas who said: �The women of the Helpers whose boys always died in infancy used to vow to bring up their boys as Jews if they were to live. When the Banu'l-Nadir were driven out, they had among them children of the Helpers. The Helpers said: 'We will not leave our children!' Upon which Allah, exalted is He, revealed (There is no compulsion in religion. The right direction is henceforth distinct from error �)�. Muhammad ibn Musa ibn al-Fadl informed us> Muhammad ibn Ya'qub> Ibrahim ibn Marzuq> Wahb ibn Jarir> Shu'bah> Abu Bishr> Sa'id ibn Jubayr> Ibn 'Abbas who said regarding the saying of Allah, exalted is He, (There is no compulsion in religion�): �The woman of the Helpers whose boys never survived used to vow that if a boy of hers survived, she would raise him as a Jew. When the Banu'l-Nadir were driven out of Medina they had among them children of the Helpers. The Helpers said: 'O Messenger of Allah! Our Children!' Allah, exalted is He, therefore revealed (There is no compulsion in religion�)�. Sa'id ibn Jubayr said: �Those who wished to leave with the Jews did leave, and those who wished to embrace Islam embraced Islam�. Said Mujahid: �This verse was revealed about a man of the Helpers who had a black boy called Subayh whom he used to coerce to become Muslim�. Al-Suddi said: �This verse was revealed about a man from the Helpers called Abu'l-Husayn. This man had two sons. It happened that some traders from Syria came to Medina to sell oil. When the traders were about to leave Medina, the two sons of Abu'l-Husayn called them to embrace Christianity. These traders converted to Christianity and then left Medina. Abu'l-Husayn informed the Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, of what had happened. He asked him to summon his two sons. But then Allah, exalted is He, revealed (There is no compulsion in religion�). The Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, said: 'May Allah banish both of them. They are the first to disbelieve'.
