2:25 Al-Baqara (The Cow)

لما ذكر جزاء الكافرين, ذكر جزاء المؤمنين, أهل الأعمال الصالحات, على طريقته تعالى في القرآن يجمع بين الترغيب والترهيب, ليكون العبد راغبا راهبا, خائفا راجيا فقال: { وَبَشِّرِ } أي: [يا أيها الرسول ومن قام مقامه] { الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا } بقلوبهم { وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ } بجوارحهم, فصدقوا إيمانهم بأعمالهم الصالحة. ووصفت أعمال الخير بالصالحات, لأن بها تصلح أحوال العبد, وأمور دينه ودنياه, وحياته الدنيوية والأخروية, ويزول بها عنه فساد الأحوال, فيكون بذلك من الصالحين, الذين يصلحون لمجاورة الرحمن في جنته. فبشرهم { أَنَّ لَهُمْ جَنَّاتٍ } أي: بساتين جامعة من الأشجار العجيبة, والثمار الأنيقة, والظل المديد, [والأغصان والأفنان وبذلك] صارت جنة يجتن بها داخلها, وينعم فيها ساكنها. { تَجْرِي مِنْ تَحْتِهَا الْأَنْهَارُ } أي: أنهار الماء, واللبن, والعسل, والخمر، يفجرونها كيف شاءوا, ويصرفونها أين أرادوا, وتشرب منها تلك الأشجار فتنبت أصناف الثمار. { كُلَّمَا رُزِقُوا مِنْهَا مِنْ ثَمَرَةٍ رِزْقًا قَالُوا هَذَا الَّذِي رُزِقْنَا مِنْ قَبْلُ } أي: هذا من جنسه, وعلى وصفه, كلها متشابهة في الحسن واللذة، ليس فيها ثمرة خاصة, وليس لهم وقت خال من اللذة, فهم دائما متلذذون بأكلها. وقوله: { وَأُتُوا بِهِ مُتَشَابِهًا } قيل: متشابها في الاسم, مختلف الطعوم وقيل: متشابها في اللون, مختلفا في الاسم، وقيل: يشبه بعضه بعضا, في الحسن, واللذة, والفكاهة, ولعل هذا الصحيح ثم لما ذكر مسكنهم, وأقواتهم من الطعام والشراب وفواكههم, ذكر أزواجهم, فوصفهن بأكمل وصف وأوجزه, وأوضحه فقال: { وَلَهُمْ فِيهَا أَزْوَاجٌ مُطَهَّرَةٌ } فلم يقل \" مطهرة من العيب الفلاني \" ليشمل جميع أنواع التطهير، فهن مطهرات الأخلاق, مطهرات الخلق, مطهرات اللسان, مطهرات الأبصار، فأخلاقهن, أنهن عرب متحببات إلى أزواجهن بالخلق الحسن, وحسن التبعل, والأدب القولي والفعلي, ومطهر خلقهن من الحيض والنفاس والمني, والبول والغائط, والمخاط والبصاق, والرائحة الكريهة، ومطهرات الخلق أيضا, بكمال الجمال, فليس فيهن عيب, ولا دمامة خلق, بل هن خيرات حسان, مطهرات اللسان والطرف، قاصرات طرفهن على أزواجهن, وقاصرات ألسنتهن عن كل كلام قبيح. ففي هذه الآية الكريمة, ذكر المبشِّر والمبشَّر, والمبشَّرُ به, والسبب الموصل لهذه البشارة، فالمبشِّر: هو الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم ومن قام مقامه من أمته، والمبشَّر: هم المؤمنون العاملون الصالحات، والمبشَّر به: هي الجنات الموصوفات بتلك الصفات، والسبب الموصل لذلك, هو الإيمان والعمل الصالح، فلا سبيل إلى الوصول إلى هذه البشارة, إلا بهما، وهذا أعظم بشارة حاصلة, على يد أفضل الخلق, بأفضل الأسباب. وفيه استحباب بشارة المؤمنين, وتنشيطهم على الأعمال بذكر جزائها [وثمراتها], فإنها بذلك تخف وتسهل، وأعظم بشرى حاصلة للإنسان, توفيقه للإيمان والعمل الصالح، فذلك أول البشارة وأصلها، ومن بعده البشرى عند الموت، ومن بعده الوصول إلى هذا النعيم المقيم، نسأل الله أن يجعلنا منهم

لما ذكر تعالى ما أعده لأعدائه من الأشقياء الكافرين به وبرسله من العذاب والنكال عطف بذكر حال أوليائه من السعداء المؤمنين به وبرسله الذين صدقوا إيمانهم بأعمالهم الصالحة وهذا معنى تسمية القرآن مثاني على أصح أقوال العلماء كما سنبسطه في موضعه وهو أن يذكر الإيمان ويتبع بذكر الكفر أو عكسه أو حال السعداء ثم الأشقياء أو عكسه وحاصله ذكر الشيء ومقابله. وأما ذكر الشيء ونظيره فذاك التشابه كما سنوضحه إن شاء الله فلهذا قال تعالى وبشر الذين آمنوا وعملوا الصالحات أن لهم جنات تجري من تحتها الأنهار فوصفها بأنها تجري من تحتها الأنهار أي من تحت أشجارها وغرفها وقد جاء في الحديث أن أنهارها تجري في غير أخدود وجاء في الكوثر أن حافتيه قباب اللؤلؤ المجوف ولا منافاة بينهما فطينها المسك الأذفر وحصباؤها اللؤلؤ والجوهر نسأل الله من فضله إنه هو البر الرحيم. وقال ابن أبي حاتم: قرأ علي الربيع بن سليمان حدثنا أسد بن موسى حدثنا أبو ثوبان عن عطاء بن قرة عن عبدالله بن ضمرة عن أبي هريرة قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم "أنهار الجنة تفجر من تحت تلال - أو من تحت جبال - المسك" وقال أيضا حدثنا أبو سعيد حدثنا وكيع عن الأعمش عن عبدالله بن مرة عن مسروق قال: قال عبدالله أنهار الجنة تفجر من جبل مسك. وقوله تعالى "كلما رزقوا منها من ثمرة رزقا قالوا هذا الذي رزقنا من قبل" قال السدي في تفسيره عن أبي مالك وعن أبي صالح عن ابن عباس وعن مرة عن ابن مسعود وعن ناس من الصحابة قالوا هذا الذي رزقنا من قبل. قال: إنهم أتوا بالثمرة في الجنة فلما نظروا إليها قالوا هذا الذي رزقنا من قبل في الدنيا وهكذا قال قتادة وعبدالرحمن بن زيد بن أسلم ونصره ابن جرير وقال عكرمة "قالوا هذا الذي رزقنا من قبل" قال معناه مثل الذي كان بالأمس وكذا قال الربيع بن أنس. وقال مجاهد يقولون ما أشبهه به قال ابن جرير وقال آخرون بل تأويل ذلك هذا الذي رزقنا من قبل ثمار الجنة من قبل هذا لشدة مشابهة بعضه بعض لقوله تعالى "وأتوا به متشابها" قال سنيد بن داود حدثنا شيخ من أهل المصيصة عن الأوزاعي عن يحيى بن أبي كثير قال: يؤتى أحدهم بالصحفة من الشيء فيأكل منها ثم يؤتى بأخرى فيقول هذا الذي أوتينا به من قبل فتقول الملائكة كلا فاللون واحد والطعم مختلف. وقال ابن أبي حاتم: حدثنا أبي حدثنا سعيد بن سليمان حدثنا عامر بن يساف عن يحيى بن أبي كثير قال: عشب الجنة الزعفران وكثبانها المسك ويطوف عليهم الولدان بالفواكه فيأكلونها ثم يؤتون بمثلها فيقول لهم أهل الجنة هذا الذي أتيتمونا آنفا به فتقول لهم الولدان كلوا فاللون واحد والطعم مختلف وهو قول الله تعالى "وأتوا به متشابها" وقال أبو جعفر الرازي عن الربيع بن أنس عن أبي العالية "وأتوا به متشابها" قال يشبه بعضه بعضا ويختلف في الطعم قال ابن أبي حاتم ورُوي عن مجاهد والربيع بن أنس والسدي نحو ذلك وقال ابن جرير بإسناده عن السدي في تفسيره عن أبي مالك وعن أبي صالح عن ابن عباس وعن مرة عن ابن مسعود وعن ناس من الصحابة في قوله تعالى "وأتوا به متشابها" يعني في اللون والمرأى وليس يشتبه في الطعم وهذا اختيار ابن جرير. وقال عكرمة "وأتوا به متشابها" قال: يشبه ثمر الدنيا غير أن ثمر الجنة أطيب. وقال سفيان الثوري عن الأعمش عن أبي ظبيان عن ابن عباس لا يشبه شيء مما في الجنة ما في الدنيا إلا في الأسماء وفي رواية ليس في الدنيا مما في الجنة إلا الأسماء ورواه ابن جرير من رواية الثوري وابن أبي حاتم من حديث أبي معاوية كلاهما عن الأعمش به. وقال عبدالرحمن بن زيد بن أسلم في قوله تعالى "وأتوا به متشابها" قال يعرفون أسماءه كما كانوا في الدنيا التفاح بالتفاح والرمان بالرمان قالوا في الجنة هذا الذي رزقنا من قبل في الدنيا وأتوا به متشابها يعرفونه وليس هو مثله في الطعم. وقوله تعالى "ولهم فيها أزواج مطهرة" قال ابن أبي طلحة عن ابن عباس مطهرة من القذر والأذى. وقال مجاهد من الحيض والغائط والبول والنخام والبزاق والمني والولد وقال قتادة مطهرة من الأذى والمأثم. وفي رواية عنه لا حيض ولا كلف. وروى عن عطاء والحسن والضحاك وأبي صالح وعطية والسدي نحو ذلك. وقال ابن جرير حدثني يونس بن عبدالأعلى أنبأنا ابن وهب عن عبدالرحمن بن زيد بن أسلم قال المطهرة التي لا تحيض قال: وكذلك خلقت حواء عليها السلام فلما عصت قال الله تعالى إني خلقتك مطهرة وسأدميك كما أدميت هذه الشجرة - وهذا غريب - وقال الحافظ أبو بكر بن مردويه حدثنا إبراهيم بن محمد حدثني جعفر بن محمد بن حرب وأحمد بن محمد الخواري قالا: حدثنا محمد بن عبيد الكندي حدثنا عبدالرزاق بن عمر البزيعي حدثنا عبدالله بن المبارك عن شعبة عن قتادة عن أبي نضرة عن أبي سعيد عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم في قوله تعالى "ولهم فيها أزواج مطهرة" قال من الحيض والغائط والنخامة والبزاق". هذا حديث غريب - وقد رواه الحاكم في مستدركه عن محمد بن يعقوب عن الحسن بن علي بن عفان عن محمد بن عبيد به. وقال صحيح على شرط الشيخين وهذا الذي ادعاه فيه نظر فإن عبدالرزاق بن عمر البزيعي هذا قال فيه أبو حاتم بن حبان العبسي لا يجوز الاحتجاج به "قلت" والأظهر أن هذا من كلام قتادة كما تقدم والله أعلم. وقوله تعالى "وهم فيها خالدون" هذا هو تمام السعادة فإنهم مع هذا النعيم في مقام أمين من الموت والانقطاع فلا آخر له ولا انقضاء بل في نعيم سرمدي أبدي على الدوام والله المسئول أن يحشرنا في زمرتهم إنه جواد كريم بر رحيم.

Rewards of Righteous Believers

After mentioning the torment that Allah has prepared for His miserable enemies who disbelieve in Him and in His Messengers, He mentions the condition of His happy, loyal friends who believe in Him and in His Messengers, adhere to the faith and perform the good deeds. This is the reason why the Qur'an was called Mathani, based on the correct opinion of the scholars. We will elaborate upon this subject later. Mathani means to mention faith and then disbelief, or vice versa. Or, Allah mentions the miserable and then the happy, or vice versa. As for mentioning similar things, it is called Tashabbuh, as we will come to know, Allah willing. Allah said,

وَبَشِّرِ الَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ الصَّـلِحَاتِ أَنَّ لَهُمْ جَنَّـتٍ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهَا الأَنْهَـرُ

(And give glad tidings to those who believe and do righteous good deeds, that for them will be Gardens under which rivers flow (Paradise)). Consequently, Allah stated that Paradise has rivers that run beneath it, meaning, underneath its trees and rooms. From Hadiths it is learned that the rivers of Paradise do not run in valleys, and that the banks of Al-Kawthar (the Prophet's lake in Paradise) are made of domes of hollow pearls, the sand of Paradise is made of scented musk while its stones are made from pearls and jewels. We ask Allah to grant Paradise to us, for verily, He is the Most Beneficent, Most Gracious.

Ibn Abi Hatim reported that Abu Hurayrah said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,

«أَنْهَارُ الْجَنَّةِ تَفَجَّرُ تَحْتَ تِلَالٍ أَوْ مِنْ تَحْتِ جِبَالِ الْمِسْك»

(The rivers of Paradise spring from beneath hills, or mountains of musk.)

He also reported from Masruq that `Abdullah said, "The rivers of Paradise spring from beneath mountains of musk."

The similarity between the Fruits of Paradise

Allah said next,

كُلَّمَا رُزِقُواْ مِنْهَا مِن ثَمَرَةٍ رِّزْقاً قَالُواْ هَـذَا الَّذِى رُزِقْنَا مِن قَبْلُ

(Every time they will be provided with a fruit therefrom, they will say: "This is what we were provided with before").

Ibn Abi Hatim reported that Yahya bin Abi Kathir said, "The grass of Paradise is made of saffron, its hills from musk and the boys of everlasting youth will serve the believers with fruits which they will eat. They will then be brought similar fruits, and the people of Paradise will comment, `This is the same as what you have just brought us.' The boys will say to them, `Eat, for the color is the same, but the taste is different. Hence Allah's statement,

وَأُتُواْ بِهِ مُتَشَـبِهاً

(and they will be given things in resemblance). Abu Ja`far Ar-Razi narrated that Ar-Rabi` bin Anas said that Abu Al-`Aliyah said that,

وَأُتُواْ بِهِ مُتَشَـبِهاً

(and they will be given things in resemblance) means, "They look like each other, but the taste is different." Also, `Ikrimah said,

وَأُتُواْ بِهِ مُتَشَـبِهاً

(and they will be given things in resemblance) "They are similar to the fruits of this life, but the fruits of Paradise taste better. " Sufyan Ath-Thawri reported from Al-A`mash, from Abu Thubyan, that Ibn `Abbas said, "Nothing in Paradise resembles anything in the life of this world, except in name." In another narration, Ibn `Abbas said, "Only the names are similar between what is in this life and what is in Paradise."

The Wives of the People of Paradise are Pure

Allah said,

وَلَهُمْ فِيهَآ أَزْوَجٌ مُّطَهَّرَةٌ

(and they shall have therein Azwajun Mutahharatun). Ibn Abi Talhah reported that Ibn `Abbas said, "Purified from filth and impurity." Also, Mujahid said, "From menstruation, relieving the call of nature, urine, spit, semen and pregnancies." Also, Qatadah said, "Purified from impurity and sin." In another narration, he said, "From menstruation and pregnancies." Further, `Ata', Al-Hasan, Ad-Dahhak, Abu Salih, `Atiyah and As-Suddi were reported to have said similarly.

Allah's statement,

وَهُمْ فِيهَا خَـلِدُونَ

(and they will abide therein forever) meaning ultimate happiness, for the believers will enjoy everlasting delight, safe from death and disruption of their bliss, for it never ends or ceases. We ask Allah to make us among these believers, for He is the Most Generous, Most Kind and Most merciful.

And give good tidings to inform those who believe who have faith in God and perform righteous deeds such as the obligatory and supererogatory rituals that theirs shall be Gardens of trees and habitations underneath which that is underneath these trees and palaces rivers run tajrī min tahtihā’l-anhāru that is there are waters in it al-nahr is the place in which water flows and is so called because the water carves yanhar its way through it; the reference to it as ‘running’ is figurative; whensoever they are provided with fruits therefrom that is whenever they are given to eat from these gardens they shall say ‘This is what that is the like of what we were provided with before’ that is before this in Paradise since its fruits are similar and this is evidenced by the following statement they shall be given it the provision in perfect semblance that is resembling one another in colour but different in taste; and there for them shall be spouses of houris and others purified from menstruation and impurities; therein they shall abide dwelling therein forever neither perishing nor departing therefrom. And when the Jews said ‘Why does God strike a similitude about flies where He says And if a fly should rob them of anything Q. 2273 and about a spider where He says As the likeness of the spider Q. 2941 what does God want with these vile creatures? God then revealed the following

Verse 24 spoke of the fire of hell which has been prepared to punish those who do not believe in the Holy Qur'an; the present verse announces the reward for those who believe.

As for the fruits with which believers will be regaled in Paradise, some commentators say that this concerns only the fruits of Paradise which would be alike in shape, but each time different in taste. Others say that these fruits would resemble the fruits of the earth in shape alone, but their taste would be totally different. Anyhow, the point is that the believers would have a kind of joy in Paradise they had never known before, and that this joy would keep renewing itself at every moment.

Thus, the fruits of Paradise13 may share a common name with the fruits of the earth, but they will be of a different nature.

13. We must sound a note of caution here. Our modernists have for some time been quite fond of asserting that in speaking of the fruits of Paradise and its other joys, the Holy Qur'an has employed only a metaphysical mode of expression in order to suggest spiritual bliss which, by its very nature, is intangible. We do not mean to rule out the possibility or the desirability of analogical or symbolical interpretations of the verses of the Holy Qur'an. In fact, many authentic Muslim scholars, particularly the Sufis, have made such attempts which have proved to be very illuminating in many ways. But no genuine Sufi has ever claimed that symbolical interpretation (I` tibar) is the same thing as exegesis (tafsir), or that his own interpretation was exclusively the only valid one. The purpose of analogical interpretation has always been to serve as an aid in spiritual realization or in the elaboration of metaphysical doctrines, and not to negate or oppose the regular mode of exegesis. What our modern exegetes overlook in their zeal and in their simplicity is the obvious fact that if a thing is being used as a metaphor or a symbol, it does not necessarily argue that it does not exist objectively. In allowing for symbolical interpretations, we must carefully remember that since the Holy Qur'an has spoken of the fruits of Paradise and of similar things, they must have an objective existence, though not a physical one (in the current sense of the word), and even though we have no knowledge as to their nature and state - all of which we can safely leave to Allah Himself. That way lies security, for that is the Straight Path.

The wives which the believers will have in Paradise, will be clean externally and pure internally - that is to say, free from everything that is physically disgusting like excrement and menstruation, and from everything that is morally disgusting like bad temper or unfaith fulness.

The joys of Paradise will also be unlike the joys of the earth in that they will not be short-lived, nor will one have to be trembling with the fear of losing them, for the believers shall live in perpetual bliss forever.

In giving these good tidings to those who believe, the Holy Qur'an adds another condition - that of good deeds -, for without good deeds, one cannot deserve such good tidings on the merit of 'Iman ایمان (faith) alone. 'Iman itself can, no doubt, save a man from being consigned to the fires of hell for ever, and every Muslim, even if he is a great sinner, will finally be taken out of hell, once he has undergone a period of punishment. But no one can altogether escape the fires of hell unless he has been doing good deeds defined by the Sharl'ah. (Ruh al Bayan: Qurtubi)

And give good news to those who have faith. This verse is a caress for the friends, giving them hope for everlasting largesse and bliss, and an en- couragement to the faithful, inciting them to obey and to seek increase of blessings. The previous verse warns the strangers against confusion in the heart and associationism on the tongue, and it threatens with the fire of punishment and the harshness of being cut off from the Real. The person of faith is he who becomes frightened and without ease when he hears the first verse and thinks about the chastisement of hell. He becomes happy when he hears the second verse, he makes his heart fast and his hope strong, and he brings ease into his heart. The Lord of the Worlds praises both the frightened and the one at ease. Concerning the frightened He says, “The faithful are only those whose hearts quake when God is remembered” [8:2]. Concerning the one at ease He says, “Those who have faith and whose hearts are serene in the remembrance of God” [13:28]. The custom of the Generous Lord is that whenever He sends a verse of fear with which He frightens the servants, after it He sends down a verse of hope and mercy to give ease to their hearts so that they will not despair. And give good news to those who have faith. Let there be good news for all those who are today in the playing field of service, for tomorrow they will be in the assembly of repose and ease [56:89]. Not everyone who reaches the paradise of approval will reach the generous gift of repose and ease. The paradise of approval is the furthest limit of the pleasure of the worshipful servants, and repose and ease is the kiblah of the spirits of the lovers. The paradise of approval is the High Chambers and the Abode of Peace. Repose and ease in the Presence of At-ness is the gift for the spirit of the passionate. Everyone who watches over his actions will reach the paradise of ap- proval; everyone who watches over his breaths will reach repose and ease. Who can explain this repose and ease and how can it be given expression!? When something does not come to the tongue, how can it be explained? A wind begins to blow from the World of the Unseen that is called “the wind of bounty.
