2:248 Al-Baqara (The Cow)

ثم ذكر لهم نبيهم أيضا آية حسية يشاهدونها وهي إتيان التابوت الذي قد فقدوه زمانا طويلا وفي ذلك التابوت سكينة تسكن بها قلوبهم، وتطمئن لها خواطرهم، وفيه بقية مما ترك آل موسى وآل هارون، فأتت به الملائكة حاملة له وهم يرونه عيانا.

يقول لهم نبيهم إن علامة بركة ملك طالوت عليكم أن يرد الله عليكم التابوت الذي كان أخذ منكم "وفيه سكينة من ربكم" قيل معناه فيه وقار وجلالة قال عبدالرزاق عن معمر عن قتادة "فيه سكينة" أي وقار وقال الربيع: رحمة وكذا روي عن العوفي عن ابن عباس وقال ابن جريج: سألت عطاء عن قوله "فيه سكينة من ربكم" قال: ما تعرفون من آيات الله فتسكنون إليه وكذا قال الحسن البصري وقيل السكينة طست من ذهب كانت تغسل فيه قلوب الأنبياء أعطاها الله موسى عليه السلام فوضع فيها الألواح ورواه السدي عن أبي مالك عن ابن عباس وقال سفيان الثوري: عن سلمة بن كهيل عن أبي الأحوص عن علي قال: السكينة لها وجه كوجه الإنسان ثم هي روح هفافة وقال ابن جرير: حدثني المثنى حدثنا أبو داود حدثنا شعبة وحماد بن سلمة وأبو الأحوص كلهم عن سماك عن خالد بن عرعرة عن علي قال: السكينة ريح خجوج ولها رأسان وقال مجاهد لها جناحان وذنب وقال محمد بن إسحاق عن وهب بن منبه: السكينة رأس هرة ميتة إذا صرخت في التابوت بصراخ هر أيقنوا بالنصر وجاءهم الفتح وقال عبدالرزاق: أخبرنا بكار بن عبدالله أنه سمع وهب بن منبه يقول: السكينة روح من الله تتكلم إذا اختلفوا في شيء تكلم فتخبرهم ببيان ما يريدون. وقوله "وبقية مما ترك آل موسى وآل هرون" قال ابن جرير: أخبرنا ابن مثنى حدثنا أبو الوليد حدثنا حماد عن داود بن أبي هند عن عكرمة عن ابن عباس في هذه الآية "وبقية مما ترك آل موسى وآل هرون" قال عصاه ورضاض الألواح وكذا قال قتادة والسدي والربيع بن أنس وعكرمة وزاد والتوراة وقال أبو صالح "وبقية مما ترك آل موسى" يعنى عصا موسى وعصا هرون ولوحين من التوراة والمن وقال عطية بن سعد: عصا موسى وعصا هارون وثياب موسى وثياب هارون ورضاض الألواح وقال عبدالرزاق: سألت الثوري عن قوله "وبقية مما ترك آل موسى وآل هارون" فقال منهم من يقول قفيز من منّ ورضاض الألواح ومنهم من يقول العصا والنعلان وقوله "تحمله الملائكة" قال ابن جريج: قال ابن عباس: جاءت الملائكة تحمل التابوت بين السماء والأرض حتى وضعته بين يدي طالوت والناس ينظرون وقال السدي: أصبح التابوت في دار طالوت فآمنوا بنبوة شمعون وأطاعوا طالوت وقال عبدالرزاق عن الثوري عن بعض أشياخه: جاءت الملائكة تسوقه على عجلة على بقرة وقيل على بقرتين. وذكر غيره أن التابوت كان بأريحاء وكان المشركون لما أخذوه وضعوه في بيت آلهتهم تحت صنمهم الكبير فأصبح التابوت على رأس الصنم فأنزلوه فوضعوه تحته فأصبح كذلك فسمروه تحت فأصبح الصنم مكسور القوائم ملقى بعيدا. فعلموا أن هذا أمر من الله لا قبل لهم به فأخرجوا التابوت من بلدهم فوضعوه في بعض القرى فأصاب أهلها داء في رقابهم فأمرتهم جارية من سبي بني إسرائيل أن يردوه إلى بني إسرائيل حتى يخلصوا من هذا الداء فحملوه على بقرتين فسارتا به لا يقربه أحد إلا مات حتى اقتربتا من بلد بني إسرائيل فكسرتا النيرين ورجعتا وجاء بنو إسرائيل فأخذوه فقيل إنه تسلمه داود عليه السلام وأنه لما قام إليهما خجل من فرحه بذلك وقيل شابان منهم فالله أعلم. وقيل كان التابوت بقرية من قرى فلسطين يقال لها أزدوه. وقوله "إن في ذلك لآية لكم" أي على صدقي فيما جئتكم به من النبوة وفيما أمرتكم به من طاعة طالوت "إن كنتم مؤمنين" أي بالله واليوم الآخر.

Their Prophet then proclaimed, "The sign of the blessings of Talut's kingship over you is that Allah will give you back the Tabut (wooden box) that has been taken from you." Allah said:

فِيهِ سَكِينَةٌ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ

(wherein is Sakinah from your Lord) meaning, peace (or grace) and reassurance. `Abdur-Razzaq stated that Qatadah said:

فِيهِ سَكِينَةٌ

(wherein is Sakinah) means grace. In addition, Ar-Rabi` said that Sakinah means mercy. This is also the meaning given by Ibn `Abbas, as Al-`Awfi narrated.

Allah then said:

وَبَقِيَّةٌ مِّمَّا تَرَكَ ءَالُ مُوسَى وَءَالُ هَـرُونَ

(...and a remnant of that which Musa (Moses) and Harun (Aaron) left behind,)

Ibn Jarir related that Ibn `Abbas said about this Ayah:

وَبَقِيَّةٌ مِّمَّا تَرَكَ ءَالُ مُوسَى وَءَالُ هَـرُونَ

(...and a remnant of that which Musa (Moses) and Harun (Aaron) left behind, ) Meaning, Moses' staff and the remnants of the Tablets. This is the same Tafsir of Qatadah, As-Suddi, Ar-Rabi` bin Anas and `Ikrimah, who added, "And also the Torah." `Abdur-Razzaq said that he asked Ath-Thawri about the meaning of,

وَبَقِيَّةٌ مِّمَّا تَرَكَ ءَالُ مُوسَى وَءَالُ هَـرُونَ

(...and a remnant of that which Musa (Moses) and Harun (Aaron) left behind,)

Ath-Thawri said, "Some said that it contained a pot of manna and the remnants of the Tablets, while some others said that it contained (Moses') staff and two shoes (and refer to 20:12)."

Allah then said:

تَحْمِلُهُ الْمَلَـئِكَةُ

(...carried by the angels.)

Ibn Jurayj stated that Ibn `Abbas said, "The angels came down while carrying the Tabut between the sky and the earth, until they placed it before Talut while the people were watching." As-Suddi said, "The Tabut was brought to Talut's house, so the people believed in the prophethood of Sham`un (Simeon) and obeyed Talut"

The Prophet then said:

إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لأَيَةً لَّكُمْ

(Verily, in this is a sign for you) testifying to my truth in what I was sent with, my prophethood, and my command to you to obey Talut,

إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ

(if you are indeed believers. ) in Allah and the Hereafter.

And their prophet said to them after they had demanded a sign of his kingship ‘The sign of his kingship is that there will come to you the Ark a chest containing the images of the prophets which God sent down to Adam and which was handed down to them sc. the Israelites until the Amalekites seized it from them in battle. They used to commence fighting invoking it before their enemy and marching behind it as well as experience peacefulness in its presence as God says therein is a Spirit of Peace reassurance for your hearts from your Lord and a remnant of what the folk of Moses and the folk of Aaron left behind which were Moses’s pair of sandals and his staff Aaron’s turban a measure qafīz of the manna that used to come down on them and the pieces of the broken tablets the angels bearing it tahmiluhu l-malā’ikatu the circumstantial qualifier referring to the subject of the verb ya’tiyakum ‘there will come to’. Surely in that shall be a sign for you of his kingship if you are believers’. The angels bore it between the earth and the sky while they gazed at it until finally they placed it before Saul. They then acknowledged his kingship and hastened to enlist in the holy struggle and he chose seventy thousand of their young men.

Commentary

1. Verse 246: إِذْ قَالُوا لِنَبِيٍّ لَّهُمُ ابْعَثْ لَنَا مَلِكًا نُّقَاتِلْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّـهِ (When they said to a prophet of theirs: "Send us a king so that we may fight in the way of Allah)."

These people from the Bani Isra'il had abandoned the injunctions given by Allah Almighty. When the infidel Amalekites were made to rule over them, they began thinking about correcting the situation. The name of the prophet mentioned here is Samuel (Arabic: Hebrew: Shemuel).

Verse 248: The story of Talut and Jalut

The Bani Isra'il used to have the legacy of a wooden chest (also identified as the Ark of the Covenant). Moses and other prophets of Bani Isra'il would keep this chest in the frontline of the battlefield. Its barakah بَرَکَہ (blessing, benediction) used to give them victory. When )Jalut: Goliath) overcame Bani Isra'il, he took this chest away with him. When Allah Almighty willed the return of the chest, it so happened that the infidels were struck by some epidemic or calamity at places where they carried this chest. Five cities were turned desolate. Nonplussed, they loaded it on two bullocks and drove them off. Then, the angels took control of the bullocks and made it reach Talut's doorsteps. (Talut is the Qur'anic name of the king known in the Bible as Saul) When the Bani Isra'il saw this sign, they believed in the kingdom of Talut, who then mounted an attack on Jalut while the weather was very hot.
