2:246 Al-Baqara (The Cow)

يقص تعالى على نبيه قصة الملأ من بني إسرائيل وهم الأشراف والرؤساء، وخص الملأ بالذكر، لأنهم في العادة هم الذين يبحثون عن مصالحهم ليتفقوا فيتبعهم غيرهم على ما يرونه، وذلك أنهم أتوا إلى نبي لهم بعد موسى عليه السلام فقالوا له { ابعث لنا ملكا } أي: عيِّن لنا ملكا { نقاتل في سبيل الله } ليجتمع متفرقنا ويقاوم بنا عدونا، ولعلهم في ذلك الوقت ليس لهم رئيس يجمعهم، كما جرت عادة القبائل أصحاب البيوت، كل بيت لا يرضى أن يكون من البيت الآخر رئيس، فالتمسوا من نبيهم تعيين ملك يرضي الطرفين ويكون تعيينه خاصا لعوائدهم، وكانت أنبياء بني إسرائيل تسوسهم، كلما مات نبي خلفه نبي آخر، فلما قالوا لنبيهم تلك المقالة { قال } لهم نبيهم { هل عسيتم إن كتب عليكم القتال ألا تقاتلوا } أي: لعلكم تطلبون شيئا وهو إذا كتب عليكم لا تقومون به، فعرض عليهم العافية فلم يقبلوها، واعتمدوا على عزمهم ونيتهم، فقالوا: { وما لنا ألا نقاتل في سبيل الله وقد أخرجنا من ديارنا وأبنائنا } أي: أي شيء يمنعنا من القتال وقد ألجأنا إليه، بأن أخرجنا من أوطاننا وسبيت ذرارينا، فهذا موجب لكوننا نقاتل ولو لم يكتب علينا، فكيف مع أنه فرض علينا وقد حصل ما حصل، ولهذا لما لم تكن نياتهم حسنة ولم يقوَ توكلهم على ربهم { فلما كتب عليهم القتال تولوا } فجبنوا عن قتال الأعداء وضعفوا عن المصادمة، وزال ما كانوا عزموا عليه، واستولى على أكثرهم الخور والجبن { إلا قليلا منهم } فعصمهم الله وثبتهم وقوى قلوبهم فالتزموا أمر الله ووطنوا أنفسهم على مقارعة أعدائه، فحازوا شرف الدنيا والآخرة، وأما أكثرهم فظلموا أنفسهم وتركوا أمر الله، فلهذا قال: { والله عليم بالظالمين }ـ

قال عبدالرزاق عن معمر عن قتادة: هذا النبي هو يوشع بن نون. قال ابن جرير: يعني ابن أفرايم بن يوسف بن يعقوب وهذا القول بعيد لأن هذا كان بعد موسى بدهر طويل وكان ذلك في زمان داود عليه السلام كما هو مصرح به في القصة وقد كان بين داود وموسى ما ينيف عن ألف سنة والله أعلم وقال السدي: هو شمعون وقال مجاهد: هو شمويل عليه السلام وكذا قال محمد بن إسحق عن وهب بن منبه وهو شمويل بن بالي أن علقمة بن ترخام بن اليهد بن بهرض بن علقمة بن ماجب بن عمرصا بن عزريا بن صفية بن علقمة بن أبي ياسف بن قارون بن يصهر بن قاهث بن لاوي بن يعقوب بن إسحق بن إبراهيم الخليل عليه السلام وقال وهب بن منبه وغيره كان بنو إسرائيل بعد موسى عليه السلام على طريق الاستقامة مدة من الزمان ثم أحدثوا الأحداث وعبد بعضهم الأصنام ولم يزل بين أظهرهم من الأنبياء من يأمرهم بالمعروف وينهاهم عن المنكر ويقيمهم على منهج التوراة إلى أن فعلوا ما فعلوا فسلط الله عليهم أعداءهم فقتلوا منهم مقتلة عظيمة وأسروا خلقا كثيرا وأخذوا منهم بلادا كثيرة ولم يكن أحد يقاتلهم إلا غلبوه وذلك أنهم كان عندهم التوراة والتابوت الذي كان في قديم الزمان وكان ذلك موروثا لخلفهم عن سلفهم إلى موسى الكليم عليه الصلاة والسلام فلم يزل بهم تماديهم على الضلال حتى استلبه منهم بعض الملوك في بعض الحروب وأخذ التوراة من أيديهم ولم يبق من يحفظها فيهم إلا القليل وانقطعت النبوة من أسباطهم ولم يبق من سبط لاوي الذي يكون فيه الأنبياء إلا امرأة حامل من بعلها وقد قتل فأخذوها فحبسوها في بيت واحتفظوا بها لعل الله يرزقها غلاما يكون نبيا لهم ولم تزل المرأة تدعو الله عز وجل أن يرزقها غلاما فسمع الله لها ووهبها غلاما فسمته شمويل أي سمع الله دعائي ومنهم من يقول شمعون وهو بمعناه فشب ذلك الغلام ونشأ فيهم وأنبته الله نباتا حسنا فلما بلغ سن الأنبياء أوحى الله إليه وأمره بالدعوة إليه وتوحيده فدعا بني إسرائيل فطلبوا منه أن يقيم لهم ملكا يقاتلون معه أعداءهم وكان الملك أيضا قد باد فيهم فقال لهم النبي: فهل عسيتم إن أقام الله لكم ملكا ألا تقاتلوا وتفوا بما التزمتم من القتال معه "قالوا وما لنا ألا نقاتل في سبيل الله وقد أخرجنا من ديارنا وأبنائنا" أي وقد أخذت منا البلاد وسبيت الأولاد قال الله تعالى: "فلما كتب عليهم القتال تولوا إلا قليلا منهم والله عليم بالظالمين" أي ما وفوا بما وعدوا بل نكل عن الجهاد أكثرهم والله عليم بهم.

The Story of the Jews Who sought a King to be appointed over Them

Mujahid said that the Prophet (mentioned in the Ayah 2:246 above) is Shamwil (Samuel). Wahb bin Munabbih said: The Children of Israel remained on the straight path for a period of time after Moses. They then innovated in the religion and some of them even worshipped the idols. Yet, there were always Prophets sent among them who would command them to work righteous deeds, refrain from doing evil and who would rule them according to the commands of the Torah. When they (Israelites) committed the evil that they committed, Allah caused their enemies to overwhelm them, and many fatalities fell among them as a consequence. Their enemies also captured a great number of them, and took over large areas of their land. Earlier, anyone who would fight the Israelites would lose, because they had the Torah and the Tabut, which they inherited generation after generation ever since the time of Moses, who spoke to Allah directly. Yet, the Israelites kept indulging in misguidance until some king took the Tabut from them during a battle. That king also took possession of the Torah, and only a few of the Israelites who memorized it remained. The prophethood halted among their various tribes and only a pregnant woman remained of the offspring of Lavi (Levi), in whom the prophethood still appeared. Her husband had been killed, so the Israelites kept her in a house so that Allah may give her a boy, who would be their Prophet. The woman also kept invoking Allah to grant her a boy. Allah heard her pleas and gave her a boy whom she called `Shamwil' meaning `Allah has heard my pleas.' Some people said that the boy's name was Sham`un (Simeon), which also has a similar meaning.

As that boy grew, Allah raised him to be a righteous person. When he reached the age of prophethood, Allah revealed to him and commanded him to call (his people) to Him and to His Tawhid (Oneness). Shamwil called the Children of Israel (to Allah) and they asked him to appoint a king over them so that they could fight their enemies under his command. The kingship had also ended among them. Their Prophet said to them, "What if Allah appoints a king over you, would you fulfill your vow to fight under his command"

قَالُواْ وَمَا لَنَآ أَلاَّ نُقَـتِلَ فِى سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَقَدْ أُخْرِجْنَا مِن دِيَـرِنَا وَأَبْنَآئِنَا

(They said, "Why should we not fight in Allah's way while we have been driven out of our homes and our children") meaning, `After our land had been confiscated and our children had been taken from us' Allah said:

فَلَمَّا كُتِبَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْقِتَالُ تَوَلَّوْاْ إِلاَّ قَلِيلاً مِّنْهُمْ وَاللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ بِالظَّـلِمِينَ

(But when fighting was ordered for them, they turned away, all except a few of them. And Allah is All-Aware of the wrongdoers) meaning, only a few of them kept their promise, but the majority abandoned Jihad and Allah has full knowledge of them.

Have you not seen the story and the tale of the council an assembly of the Children of Israel after the death of Moses when they said to a prophet of theirs namely Samuel ‘Send establish for us a king to unite us and to whom we can refer matters and we will fight with him in God’s way’. He the prophet said to them ‘Might it be that ‘asaytum or ‘asītum if fighting is prescribed for you you will not fight? allā tuqātilū is the predicate of ‘asā ‘might it be’; the interrogative is intended to confirm the expectation that follows sc. that they will not fight. They said ‘Why should we not fight in God’s way when we have been expelled from our habitations and our children?’ as a result of these latter being taken captive or killed that which they suffered at the hands of Goliath and his men. The meaning is ‘There is nothing to stop us fighting provided the requirement we demanded is forthcoming’. God exalted be He says Yet when fighting was prescribed for them they turned their backs from fighting in cowardice except a few of them the ones that crossed the river with Saul Tālūt as will be mentioned; and God has knowledge of the evildoers and will requite them accordingly. The prophet then asked his Lord to send forth a king and God responded by sending forth Saul.

Commentary

1. Verse 246: إِذْ قَالُوا لِنَبِيٍّ لَّهُمُ ابْعَثْ لَنَا مَلِكًا نُّقَاتِلْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّـهِ (When they said to a prophet of theirs: "Send us a king so that we may fight in the way of Allah)."

These people from the Bani Isra'il had abandoned the injunctions given by Allah Almighty. When the infidel Amalekites were made to rule over them, they began thinking about correcting the situation. The name of the prophet mentioned here is Samuel (Arabic: Hebrew: Shemuel).

Verse 248: The story of Talut and Jalut

The Bani Isra'il used to have the legacy of a wooden chest (also identified as the Ark of the Covenant). Moses and other prophets of Bani Isra'il would keep this chest in the frontline of the battlefield. Its barakah بَرَکَہ (blessing, benediction) used to give them victory. When )Jalut: Goliath) overcame Bani Isra'il, he took this chest away with him. When Allah Almighty willed the return of the chest, it so happened that the infidels were struck by some epidemic or calamity at places where they carried this chest. Five cities were turned desolate. Nonplussed, they loaded it on two bullocks and drove them off. Then, the angels took control of the bullocks and made it reach Talut's doorsteps. (Talut is the Qur'anic name of the king known in the Bible as Saul) When the Bani Isra'il saw this sign, they believed in the kingdom of Talut, who then mounted an attack on Jalut while the weather was very hot.
