2:164 Al-Baqara (The Cow)

أخبر تعالى أن في هذه المخلوقات العظيمة, آيات أي: أدلة على وحدانية الباري وإلهيته، وعظيم سلطانه ورحمته وسائر صفاته، ولكنها { لِقَوْمٍ يَعْقِلُونَ } أي: لمن لهم عقول يعملونها فيما خلقت له، فعلى حسب ما منّ الله على عبده من العقل, ينتفع بالآيات ويعرفها بعقله وفكره وتدبُّره، ففي { خَلْقِ السَّمَاوَاتِ } في ارتفاعها واتساعها, وإحكامها, وإتقانها, وما جعل الله فيها من الشمس والقمر, والنجوم, وتنظيمها لمصالح العباد. وفي خلق { الْأَرْضِ } مهادا للخلق, يمكنهم القرار عليها والانتفاع بما عليها, والاعتبار. ما يدل ذلك على انفراد الله تعالى بالخلق والتدبير, وبيان قدرته العظيمة التي بها خلقها, وحكمته التي بها أتقنها, وأحسنها ونظمها, وعلمه ورحمته التي بها أودع ما أودع, من منافع الخلق ومصالحهم, وضروراتهم وحاجاتهم. وفي ذلك أبلغ الدليل على كماله, واستحقاقه أن يفرد بالعبادة, لانفراده بالخلق والتدبير, والقيام بشئون عباده { و } في { اخْتِلَافِ اللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ } وهو تعاقبهما على الدوام, إذا ذهب أحدهما, خلفه الآخر، وفي اختلافهما في الحر, والبرد, والتوسط, وفي الطول, والقصر, والتوسط, وما ينشأ عن ذلك من الفصول, التي بها انتظام مصالح بني آدم وحيواناتهم, وجميع ما على وجه الأرض, من أشجار ونوابت، كل ذلك بانتظام وتدبير, وتسخير, تنبهر له العقول, وتعجز عن إدراكه من الرجال الفحول, ما يدل ذلك على قدرة مصرفها, وعلمه وحكمته, ورحمته الواسعة, ولطفه الشامل, وتصريفه وتدبيره, الذي تفرد به, وعظمته, وعظمة ملكه وسلطانه, مما يوجب أن يؤله ويعبد, ويفرد بالمحبة والتعظيم, والخوف والرجاء, وبذل الجهد في محابه ومراضيه. { و } في { وَالْفُلْكِ الَّتِي تَجْرِي فِي الْبَحْرِ } وهي السفن والمراكب ونحوها, مما ألهم الله عباده صنعتها, وخلق لهم من الآلات الداخلية والخارجية ما أقدرهم عليها. ثم سخر لها هذا البحر العظيم والرياح, التي تحملها بما فيها من الركاب والأموال, والبضائع التي هي من منافع الناس, وبما تقوم به مصالحهم وتنتظم معايشهم. فمن الذي ألهمهم صنعتها, وأقدرهم عليها, وخلق لهم من الآلات ما به يعملونها؟ أم من الذي سخر لها البحر, تجري فيه بإذنه وتسخيره, والرياح؟ أم من الذي خلق للمراكب البرية والبحرية, النار والمعادن المعينة على حملها, وحمل ما فيها من الأموال؟ فهل هذه الأمور, حصلت اتفاقا, أم استقل بعملها هذا المخلوق الضعيف العاجز, الذي خرج من بطن أمه, لا علم له ولا قدرة، ثم خلق له ربه القدرة, وعلمه ما يشاء تعليمه، أم المسخر لذلك رب واحد, حكيم عليم, لا يعجزه شيء, ولا يمتنع عليه شيء؟ بل الأشياء قد دانت لربوبيته, واستكانت لعظمته, وخضعت لجبروته. وغاية العبد الضعيف, أن جعله الله جزءا من أجزاء الأسباب, التي بها وجدت هذه الأمور العظام, فهذا يدل على رحمة الله وعنايته بخلقه, وذلك يوجب أن تكون المحبة كلها له, والخوف والرجاء, وجميع الطاعة, والذل والتعظيم. { وَمَا أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مِنْ مَاءٍ } وهو المطر النازل من السحاب. { فَأَحْيَا بِهِ الْأَرْضَ بَعْدَ مَوْتِهَا } فأظهرت من أنواع الأقوات, وأصناف النبات, ما هو من ضرورات الخلائق, التي لا يعيشون بدونها. أليس ذلك دليلا على قدرة من أنزله, وأخرج به ما أخرج ورحمته, ولطفه بعباده, وقيامه بمصالحهم, وشدة افتقارهم وضرورتهم إليه من كل وجه؟ أما يوجب ذلك أن يكون هو معبودهم وإلههم؟ أليس ذلك دليلا على إحياء الموتى ومجازاتهم بأعمالهم؟ { وَبَثَّ فِيهَا } أي: في الأرض { مِنْ كُلِّ دَابَّةٍ } أي: نشر في أقطار الأرض من الدواب المتنوعة, ما هو دليل على قدرته وعظمته, ووحدانيته وسلطانه العظيم، وسخرها للناس, ينتفعون بها بجميع وجوه الانتفاع. فمنها: ما يأكلون من لحمه, ويشربون من دره، ومنها: ما يركبون، ومنها: ما هو ساع في مصالحهم وحراستهم, ومنها: ما يعتبر به، ومع أنه بث فيها من كل دابة، فإنه سبحانه هو القائم بأرزاقهم, المتكفل بأقواتهم، فما من دابة في الأرض إلا على الله رزقها, ويعلم مستقرها ومستودعها. وفي { تَصْرِيفِ الرِّيَاحِ } باردة وحارة, وجنوبا وشمالا, وشرقا ودبورا وبين ذلك، وتارة تثير السحاب, وتارة تؤلف بينه, وتارة تلقحه, وتارة تدره, وتارة تمزقه وتزيل ضرره, وتارة تكون رحمة, وتارة ترسل بالعذاب. فمن الذي صرفها هذا التصريف, وأودع فيها من منافع العباد, ما لا يستغنون عنه؟ وسخرها ليعيش فيها جميع الحيوانات, وتصلح الأبدان والأشجار, والحبوب والنوابت, إلا العزيز الحكيم الرحيم, اللطيف بعباده المستحق لكل ذل وخضوع, ومحبة وإنابة وعبادة؟. وفي تسخير السحاب بين السماء والأرض على خفته ولطافته يحمل الماء الكثير, فيسوقه الله إلى حيث شاء، فيحيي به البلاد والعباد, ويروي التلول والوهاد, وينزله على الخلق وقت حاجتهم إليه، فإذا كان يضرهم كثرته, أمسكه عنهم, فينزله رحمة ولطفا, ويصرفه عناية وعطفا، فما أعظم سلطانه, وأغزر إحسانه, وألطف امتنانه\" أليس من القبيح بالعباد, أن يتمتعوا برزقه, ويعيشوا ببره وهم يستعينون بذلك على مساخطه ومعاصيه؟ أليس ذلك دليلا على حلمه وصبره, وعفوه وصفحه, وعميم لطفه؟ فله الحمد أولا وآخرا, وباطنا وظاهرا. والحاصل, أنه كلما تدبر العاقل في هذه المخلوقات, وتغلغل فكره في بدائع المبتدعات, وازداد تأمله للصنعة وما أودع فيها من لطائف البر والحكمة, علم بذلك, أنها خلقت للحق وبالحق, وأنها صحائف آيات, وكتب دلالات, على ما أخبر به الله عن نفسه ووحدانيته, وما أخبرت به الرسل من اليوم الآخر, وأنها مسخرات, ليس لها تدبير ولا استعصاء على مدبرها ومصرفها. فتعرف أن العالم العلوي والسفلي كلهم إليه مفتقرون, وإليه صامدون، وأنه الغني بالذات عن جميع المخلوقات، فلا إله إلا الله, ولا رب سواه.

يقول تعالى "إن في خلق السموات والأرض" تلك في ارتفاعها ولطافتها واتساعها وكواكبها السيارة والثوابت ودوران فلكها - وهذه الأرض في كثافتها وانخفاضها وجبالها وبحارها وقفارها ووهادها وعمرانها وما فيها من المنافع واختلاف الليل والنهار هذا يجيء ثم يذهب ويخلفه الآخر ويعقبه لا يتأخر عنه لحظة كما قال تعالى "لا الشمس ينبغي لها أن تدرك القمر ولا الليل سابق النهار وكل في فلك يسبحون" وتارة يطول هذا ويقصر هذا وتارة يأخذ هذا من هذا ثم يتعاوضان كما قال تعالى "يولج الليل في النهار ويولج النهار في الليل" أي يزيد من هذا في هذا ومن هذا في هذا "والفلك التي تجري فى البحر بما ينفع الناس" أي في تسخير البحر بحمل السفن من.جانب إلى جانب لمعايش الناس والانتفاع بما عند أهل ذلك الإقليم ونقل هذا إلى هؤلاء وما عند أولئك إلى هؤلاء "وما أنزل الله من السماء من ماء فأحيا به الأرض بعد موتها" كما قال تعالى "وآية لهم الأرض الميتة أحييناها وأخرجنا منها حبا فمنه يأكلون" - إلى قوله - "ومما لا يعلمون" "وبث فيها من كل دابة" أي على اختلاف أشكالها وألوانها ومنافعها وصغرها وكبرها وهو يعلم ذلك كله ويرزقه لا يخفى عليه شي من ذلك كما قال تعالى "وما من دابة في الأرض إلا على الله رزقها ويعلم مستقرها ومستودعها كل في كتاب مبين" "وتصريف الرياح" أي فتارة تأتي بالرحمة وتارة تأتي بالعذاب وتارة تأتي مبشرة بين يدي السحاب وتارة تسوقه وتارة تجمعه وتارة تفرقه وتارة تصرفه ثم تارة تأتى من الجنوب وهي الشامية وتارة تأتي من ناحية اليمن وتارة صبا وهي الشرقية التي تصدم وجه الكعبة وتارة دبورا وهي غربية تنفذ من ناحية دبر الكعبة. وقد صنف الناس في الرياح والمطر والأنواء كتبا كثيرة فيما يتعلق بلغاتها وأحكامها وبسط ذلك يطول ههنا والله أعلم والسحاب المسخر بين السماء والأرض أي سائر بين السماء والأرض مسخر إلى ما يشاء الله من الأراضي والأماكن كما يصرفه تعالى "لآيات لقوم يعقلون" أي في هذه الأشياء دلالات بينة على وحدانية الله تعالى "إن في خلق السموات والأرض واختلاف الليل والنهار لآيات لأولى الألباب الذين يذكرون الله قياما وقعودا وعلى جنوبهم يتفكرون في خلق السموات والأرض ربنا ما خلقت هذا باطلا سبحانك فقنا عذاب النار" وقال الحافظ أبو بكر بن مردويه: أخبرنا محمد بن أحمد بن إبراهيم حدثنا أبو سعيد الدشتكي حدثني أبي عن أبيه عن أشعث بن إسحاق عن جعفر بن أبي المغيرة عن سعيد بن جبير عن ابن عباس قال: أتت قريش محمدا صلى الله عليه وسلم فقالوا: يا محمد إنا نريد أن تدعو ربك أن يجعل لنا الصفا ذهبا فنشتري به الخيل والسلاح فنؤمن بك ونقاتل معك قال "أوثقوا لي لئن دعوت ربي فجعل لكم الصفا ذهبا لتؤمنن بي" فأوثقوا له فدعا ربه فأتاه جبريل فقال إن ربك قد أعطاهم الصفا ذهبا على أنهم إن لم يؤمنوا بك عذبهم عذابا لم يعذبه أحدا من العالمين قال محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم "رب لا بل دعني وقومي فلأدعهم يوما بيوم" فأنزل الله هذه الآية "إن في خلق السموات والأرض واختلاف الليل والنهار والفلك التي تجري في البحر بما ينفع الناس" الآية ورواه ابن أبي حاتم من وجه أخر عن جعفر بن أبي المغيرة به وزاد في آخره: "وكيف يسألونك الصفا وهم يرون من الآيات ما هو أعظم من الصفا" وقال ابن أبي حاتم أيضا حدثنا أبي حدثنا أبو حذيفة حدثنا شبل عن ابن أبي نجيح عن عطاء قال: نزلت على النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم بالمدينة "وإلهكم إله واحد لا إله إلا هو الرحمن الرحيم" فقال كفار قريش بمكة كيف يسع الناس إله واحد فأنزل الله تعالى "إن في خلق السموات والأرض واختلاف الليل والنهـار والفلك التي تجري في البحر بما ينفع الناس" إلى قوله" لآيات لقوم يعقلون" فبهذا يعلمون أنه إله واحد وأنه إله كل شيء وخالق كل شيء وقال وكيع بن الجراح: حدثنا سفيان عن أبيه عن أبي الضحى قال: لما نزلت "وإلهكم إله واحد" إلى آخر الآية قال المشركون إن كان هكذا فليأتنا بأية فأنزل الله عز وجل "إن في خلق السموات والأرض واختلاف الليل والنهار" إلى قوله "يعقلون" ورواه آدم بن أبي إياس عن أبي جعفر هو الرازي عن سعيد بن مسروق والد سفيان عن أبي الضحى به.

The Proofs for Tawhid

Allah said:

إِنَّ فِي خَلْقِ السَّمَـوَتِ وَالاٌّرْضِ

(Verily, in the creation of the heavens and the earth...)

Therefore, the sky, with its height, intricate design, vastness, the heavenly objects in orbit, and this earth, with its density, its lowlands, mountains, seas, deserts, valleys, and other structures, and beneficial things that it has. Allah continues:

وَاخْتِلَـفِ الَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ

(...and in the alternation of night and day.)

This (the night) comes and then goes followed by the other (the day) which does not delay for even an instant, just as Allah said:

لاَ الشَّمْسُ يَنبَغِى لَهَآ أَن تدْرِكَ القَمَرَ وَلاَ الَّيْلُ سَابِقُ النَّهَارِ وَكُلٌّ فِى فَلَكٍ يَسْبَحُونَ

(It is not for the sun to overtake the moon, nor does the night outstrip the day. They all float, each in an orbit.) (36:40)

Sometimes, the day grows shorter and the night longer, and sometimes vice versa, one takes from the length of the other. Similarly Allah said:

يُولِجُ الَّيْلَ فِى النَّهَارِ وَيُولِجُ النَّهَارَ فِى الَّيْلِ

(Allah merges the night into the day, and He merges the day into the night) (57:6) meaning, He extends the length of one from the other and vice versa. Allah then continues:

وَالْفُلْكِ الَّتِى تَجْرِى فِى الْبَحْرِ بِمَا يَنفَعُ النَّاسَ

(. ..and the ships which sail through the sea with that which is of use to mankind,)

Shaping the sea in this manner, so that it is able to carry ships from one shore to another, so people benefit from what the other region has, and export what they have to them and vice versa.

Allah then continues:

وَمَآ أَنزَلَ اللَّهُ مِنَ السَّمَآءِ مِن مَّآءٍ فَأَحْيَا بِهِ الاٌّرْضَ بَعْدَ مَوْتِهَا

(...and the water (rain) which Allah sends down from the sky and makes the earth alive therewith after its death), which is similar to Allah's statement:

وَءَايَةٌ لَّهُمُ الاٌّرْضُ الْمَيْتَةُ أَحْيَيْنَـهَا وَأَخْرَجْنَا مِنْهَا حَبّاً فَمِنْهُ يَأْكُلُونَ

(And a sign for them is the dead land. We give it life, and We bring forth from it grains, so that they eat thereof.) (36:33), until:

وَمِمَّا لاَ يَعْلَمُونَ

(which they know not.) (36:36)

Allah continues:

وَبَثَّ فِيهَا مِن كُلِّ دَآبَّةٍ

(and the moving (living) creatures of all kinds that He has scattered therein,) meaning, in various shapes, colors, uses and sizes, whether small or large. Allah knows all that, sustains it, and nothing is concealed from Him. Similarly, Allah said:

وَمَا مِن دَآبَّةٍ فِي الاٌّرْضِ إِلاَّ عَلَى اللَّهِ رِزْقُهَا وَيَعْلَمُ مُسْتَقَرَّهَا وَمُسْتَوْدَعَهَا كُلٌّ فِى كِتَابٍ مُّبِينٍ

(And no moving (living) creature is there on earth but its provision is due from Allah. And He knows its dwelling place and its deposit (in the uterus or grave). All is in a Clear Book (Al-Lawh Al-Mahfuz ـ the Book of Decrees with Allah).) (11:6)

وَتَصْرِيفِ الرِّيَـحِ

(...and in the veering of winds...)

Sometimes, the wind brings mercy and sometimes torment. Sometimes it brings the good news of the clouds that follow it, sometimes it leads the clouds, herding them, scattering them or directing them. Sometimes, the wind comes from the north (the northern wind), and sometimes from the south, sometimes from the east, and striking the front of the Ka`bah, sometimes from the west, striking its back. There are many books about the wind rain, stars and the regulations related to them, but here is not the place to elaborate on that, and Allah knows best.

Allah continues:

وَالسَّحَابِ الْمُسَخَّرِ بَيْنَ السَّمَآءِ وَالأَرْضِ

(...and clouds which are held between the sky and the earth,)

The clouds run between the sky and the earth to wherever Allah wills of lands and areas.

Allah said next:

لآيَـتٍ لِّقَوْمٍ يَعْقِلُونَ

(...are indeed Ayat for people of understanding,) meaning, all these things are clear signs that testify to Allah's Oneness. Similarly, Allah said:

إِنَّ فِى خَلْقِ السَّمَـوَتِ وَالاٌّرْضِ وَاخْتِلَـفِ الَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ لاّيَـتٍ لاٌّوْلِى الاٌّلْبَـبِ - الَّذِينَ يَذْكُرُونَ اللَّهَ قِيَـماً وَقُعُوداً وَعَلَى جُنُوبِهِمْ وَيَتَفَكَّرُونَ فِى خَلْقِ السَّمَـوَتِ وَالاٌّرْضِ رَبَّنَآ مَا خَلَقْتَ هَذا بَـطِلاً سُبْحَـنَكَ فَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

(Verily, in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in the alternation of night and day, there are indeed signs for men of understanding. Those who remember Allah (always, and in prayers) standing, sitting, and lying down on their sides, and think deeply about the creation of the heavens and the earth, (saying): "Our Lord! You have not created (all) this without purpose, glory to You! (Exalted are You above all that they associate with You as partners). Give us salvation from the torment of the Fire.") (3:190, 191)

They then asked for a sign to prove this and the following was revealed Surely in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the marvels contained in them and the alternation of the night and day passing and returning increasing and diminishing and the ships that run in the sea and do not become cracked and sink with what profits men of trade and merchandise and the water the rain God sends down from the heaven with which He revives the earth with vegetation after it is dead after it has dried out and He scatters abroad in it all manner of crawling thing by dividing them and spreading them throughout on account of the vegetation for they thrive on the fertile pastures it produces; and the disposition of the winds changing it from south to north from cold to warm and the clouds compelled subjugated by God’s command moving to wherever God wishes between heaven and the earth without being attached to either of the two — surely there are signs indicating His Oneness exalted be He for a people who comprehend a people who contemplate.

Now in Verse 164, there is a series of signs and proofs in support of the premise that Allah Almighty is really One. Stated simply, these can be grasped by the learned and the ignorant alike. How can one bypass the wonder of the creation of the heavens and the earth? Who can ignore the constant alternation of the night and the day? The message is simple and clear. Their origination and their perpetuity is the work of His perfect power alone and that there is absolutely no being other than Him who can take that credit.

Similarly, the movement of boats on the surface of waters, is a formidable indicator of Allah's power which gave water, a substance so liquid and fluid, the property of lifting on its back ships which carry tons and tons of weight all the way from the East to the West. Then, there is the movement of winds which Allah harnesses into the service of man, and in His wisdom, keeps changing their direction. These are great signs; they tell us that they were created and operated by a supreme being, the One who is All-Knowing, All-Aware, All-Wise. If the substance of water was not given a state in which the molecules move freely among themselves while remaining in one mass, a functional fluidity in other words, all this maritime activity would not be there. Even if this fluidity of sea-surface was there, help from winds was still needed in order to cover all those thousands of nautical miles across the seas of the world. The Holy Qur'an has summarized the subject by saying:

إِن يَشَأْ يُسْكِنِ الرِّ‌يحَ فَيَظْلَلْنَ رَ‌وَاكِدَ عَلَىٰ ظَهْرِ‌هِ

"If He wills, He can still the winds, then, ships shall remain standing on the back of the seas." (42:33)

The use of the expression بِمَا يَنفَعُ النَّاسَ :'with what benefits men' points out to the countless benefits that accrue to human beings when they mutually trade their goods through sea freighters. It is interesting to keep in mind the variations these benefits take from country to country and from age to age.

Then comes the marvel of water descending from the sky, drop by drop, released in a measure and manner that it hurts nothing. If it always came in the form of a flood, nothing would have survived, man or animal or things. Then, the raining of water is not all; it is the storage of water on earth that baffles the human ingenuity. Risking a simplicity, let us imagine if everyone was asked to store for personal use a quota of water for six month, how would everyone manage that? Even if such an impossible storage was somehow done, how could it be made to remain potable and hygienic all this time? Allah Almighty, in His infinite mercy, took care of this too. The Holy Qur'an says:

فَأَسْكَنَّاهُ فِي الْأَرْ‌ضِ ۖ وَإِنَّا عَلَىٰ ذَهَابٍ بِهِ لَقَادِرُ‌ونَ

'Then, We made water stay in the earth, although, We were capable of letting it flow away' (23:18)

But, nature did not allow this to happen. For the inhabitants of the earth, human and animal, water was stored in ponds and lakes openly. Then, the same water was lowered into the earth under the mountains and valleys in the form of an unsensed network of hidden pipelines of water accessible to everyone taking the trouble of digging and finding water. Further still, is it not that a huge sea of ice was stored out on top of the mountain ranges which is secure against spoilage and melts out slowly reaching all over the world through nature's own water lines.

To sum up, it can be said that Allah's Oneness has been proved in these verses with the citation of some manifestations of His perfect power. Commentators of the Qur'an have taken up this subject in great details. Those interested may see al-Jassas, al-Qurtubi and others.

Surely in the creation of the heavens and the earth, the alternation of the night and the day, the ships that run on the sea with what benefits people, the water that God sends down from heaven giving life to the earth after its death, the scattering of every beast therein, the shifting of the winds, the clouds subjected between heaven and earth-there are signs for a people who have intellect. In this verse the Lord of the Universe shows the generality of people the road to Himself, so that they will gaze upon the wonders of the dominion of heaven and earth and on the artisanries of land and sea and then recognize the Artisan and attest to His oneness. Ibn ʿAṬāÌ said, “He made Himself recognized to the common people with His creation, to the elect with His attributes, and to the prophets and the elect of the elect with His Essence.” The gaze of the common people is on the artisanry, the gaze of the elect on the attributes, and the gaze of the prophets and the elect of the elect on the Essence. The generality of the faithful look at the artisanry and from the artisanry reach the Artisan. The elect among the faithful know the attributes and from the attributes reach the Object of attribution and from the name the Named. Thus it was said to the Children of Israel, “Sacrifice a cow” [2:67], but they did not recognize it. So the cow was described to them, they recognized it, and they sacrificed it. As for the prophets and the sincerely truthful, they recognize Him through Him, not through other than Him. They look from Him to Him, not from the other to Him. God alludes to this state when He says, “Dost thou not see thy Lord, how He stretched out the shadow?” [25:45]. He did not say, “Look at the shadow so that you may see My artisanry.” He said, “Look at Me so that you may see My artisanry. O paragon of the world! Look not at Gabriel's coming, look at My sending. Look from Me to him, not from him to Me.” Consider for a moment the female companions of Joseph. When the very entity of Joseph was unveiled to them, they were annihilated from themselves and became absent from Joseph's attributes.
