2:115 Al-Baqara (The Cow)

أي: { وَلِلَّهِ الْمَشْرِقُ وَالْمَغْرِبُ } خصهما بالذكر, لأنهما محل الآيات العظيمة, فهما مطالع الأنوار ومغاربها، فإذا كان مالكا لها, كان مالكا لكل الجهات. { فَأَيْنَمَا تُوَلُّوا } وجوهكم من الجهات, إذا كان توليكم إياها بأمره, إما أن يأمركم باستقبال الكعبة بعد أن كنتم مأمورين باستقبال بيت المقدس, أو تؤمرون بالصلاة في السفر على الراحلة ونحوها, فإن القبلة حيثما توجه العبد أو تشتبه القبلة, فيتحرى الصلاة إليها, ثم يتبين له الخطأ, أو يكون معذورا بصلب أو مرض ونحو ذلك، فهذه الأمور, إما أن يكون العبد فيها معذورا أو مأمورا. وبكل حال, فما استقبل جهة من الجهات, خارجة عن ملك ربه. { فَثَمَّ وَجْهُ اللَّهِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ وَاسِعٌ عَلِيمٌ } فيه إثبات الوجه لله تعالى, على الوجه اللائق به تعالى, وأن لله وجها لا تشبهه الوجوه, وهو - تعالى - واسع الفضل والصفات عظيمها, عليم بسرائركم ونياتكم. فمن سعته وعلمه, وسع لكم الأمر, وقبل منكم المأمور, فله الحمد والشكر.

وهذا والله أعلم فيه تسلية للرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم وأصحابه الذين أخرجوا من مكة وفارقوا مسجدهم ومصلاهم وقد كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يصلي بمكة إلى بيت المقدس والكعبة بين يديه فلما قدم المدينة وجه إلى بيت المقدس ستة عشر شهرا ثم صرفه الله إلى الكعبة بعد ولهذا يقول تعالى "ولله المشرق والمغرب فأينما تولوا فثم وجه الله" قال أبو عبيد القاسم بن سلام في كتاب الناسخ والمنسوخ: أخبرنا حجاج بن محمد أخبرنا ابن جريج وعثمان بن عطاء عن عطاء عن ابن عباس قال: أول ما نسخ لنا من القرآن فيما ذكر لنا والله أعلم شأن القبلة قال الله تعالى "ولله المشرق والمغرب فأينما تولوا فثم وجه الله" فاستقبل رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فصلى نحو بيت المقدس وترك البيت العتيق ثم صرفه إلى بيته العتيق ونسخها فقال "ومن حيث خرجت فول وجهك شطر المسجد الحرام وحيث ما كنتم فولوا وجوهكم شطره" وقال علي بن أبي طلحة عن ابن عباس قال: "كان أول ما نسخ من القرآن القبلة وذلك أن رسول صلى الله عليه وسلم لما هاجر إلى المدينة وكان أهلها اليهود أمره الله أن يستقبل بيت المقدس ففرحت اليهود فاستقبلها رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم بضعة عشر شهرا وكان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يحب قبلة إبراهيم وكان يدعو وينظر إلى السماء فأنزل الله "قد نرى تقلب وجهك في السماء" إلى قوله "فولوا وجوهكم شطره" فارتاب من ذلك اليهود وقالوا "ما ولاهم عن قبلتهم التي كانوا عليها" فأنزل الله "قل لله المشرق والمغرب" وقال "فأينما تولوا فثم وجه الله" وقال عكرمة عن ابن عباس "فأينما تولوا فثم وجه الله" قال قبلة الله أينما توجهت شرقا أو غربا وقال مجاهد فأينما تولوا فثم وجه الله حيثما كنتم فلكم قبلة تستقبلونها الكعبة وقال ابن أبي حاتم بعد رواية الأثر المتقدم عن ابن عباس في نسخ القبلة عن عطاء عنه وروي عن أبي العالية والحسن وعطاء الخراساني وعكرمة وقتادة والسدي وزيد بن أسلم نحو ذلك وقال ابن جرير وقال آخرون: بل أنزل الله هذه الآية قبل أن يفرض التوجه إلى الكعبة وإنما أنزلها ليعلم نبيه صلى الله عليه وسلم وأصحابه أن لهم التوجه بوجوههم للصلاة حيث شاءوا من نواحي المشرق والمغرب لأنهم لا يوجهون وجوههم وجها من ذلك وناحية إلا كان جل ثناؤه في ذلك الوجه وتلك الناحية لأن له تعالى المشارق والمغارب وإنه لا يخلو منه مكان كما قال تعالى "ولا أدنى من ذلك ولا أكثر إلا هو معهم أينما كانوا" قالوا: ثم نسخ ذلك بالفرض الذي فرض عليهم التوجه إلى المسجد الحرام هكذا قال وفي قوله وأنه تعالى لا يخلو منه مكان إن أراد علمه تعالى فصحيح فإن علمه تعالى محيط بجميع المعلومات وأما ذاته تعالى فلا تكون محصورة في شيء من خلقه تعالى الله عن ذلك علوا كبيرا. قال ابن جرير وقال آخرون بل نزلت هذه الآية على رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم إذنا من أن أن يصلي المتطوع حيث توجه من شرق أو غرب في مسيره في سفره وفي حال المسايفة وشدة الخوف حدثنا أبو كريب أخبرنا ابن إدريس حدثنا عبدالملك هو ابن أبي سليمان عن سعيد بن جبير عن ابن عمر أنه كان يصلي حيث توجهت به راحلته ويذكر أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم كان يفعل ذلك ويتأول هذه الآية "فأينما تولوا فثم وجه الله" ورواه مسلم والترمذي والنسائي وابن أبي حاتم وابن مردويه من طرق عن عبدالملك بن أبي سليمان به وأصله في الصحيحين من حديث ابن عمر وعامر بن ربيعة من غير ذكر الآية وفي صحيح البخاري من حديث نافع عن ابن عمر أنه كان إذا سئل عن صلاة الخوف وصفها. ثم قال " فإن كان خوف أشد من ذلك صلوا رجالا قياما على أقدامهم وركبانا مستقبلي القبلة وغير مستقبليها " قال نافع: ولا أرى ابن عمر ذكر ذلك إلا عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم " مسأله "ولم يفرق الشافعي في المشهور عنه بين سفر المسافة وسفر العدوى فالجميع عنه يجوز التطوع فيه على الراحلة وهو قول أبي حنيفة خلافا لمالك وجماعته واختار أبو يوسف وأبو سعيد الإصطخري التطوع على الدابة في المصر وحكاه أبو يوسف عن أنس بن مالك رضي الله عنه واختاره أبو جعفر الطبري حتى للماشي أيضا قال ابن جرير وقال آخرون بل نزلت هذه الآية في قوم عميت عليهم القبلة فلم يعرفوا شطرها فصلوا على أنحاء مختلفة فقال الله تعالى: لي المشارق والمغارب فأين وليتم وجهكم فهنالك وجهي وهو قبلتكم فيعلمكم بذلك أن صلاتكم ماضية. حدثنا محمد بن إسحق الأهوازي أخبرنا أبو أحمد الزبيري أخبرنا أبو الربيع السمان عن عاصم بن عبيد الله عن عبدالله بن عامر بن ربيعة عن أبيه قال: كنا مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم في ليلة سوداء مظلمة فنزلنا منزلا فجعل الرجل يأخذ الأحجار فيعمل مسجدا يصلي فيه فلما أن أصبحنا إذا نحن قد صلينا إلى غير القبلة فقلنا يا رسول الله لقد صلينا ليلتنا هذه لغير القبلة فأنزل الله تعالى "ولله المشرق والمغرب فأينما تولوا فثم وجه الله" الآية ثم رواه عن سفيان بن وكيع عن أبيه عن أبي الربيع السمان بنحوه. ورواه الترمذي عن محمود بن غيلان عن وكيع وابن ماجه عن يحيى بن حكيم عن أبي داود عن أبي الربيع السمان ورواه ابن أبي حاتم عن الحسن بن محمد بن الصباح عن سعيد بن سليمان عن أبي الربيع السمان واسمه أشعث بن سعيد البصري وهو ضعيف الحديث وقال الترمذي هذا حديث حسن وليس إسناده بذاك ولا نعرفه إلا من حديث الأشعث السمان وأشعث يضعف في الحديث قلت وشيخه عاصم أيضا ضعيف. قال البخاري منكر الحديث. وقال ابن معين: ضعيف لا يحتج به وقال ابن حبان: متروك والله أعلم. وقد روي من طريق آخر عن جابر فقال الحافظ أبو بكر بن مردويه في تفسير هذه الآية أخبرنا إسماعيل بن علي بن إسماعيل أخبرنا الحسن بن على بن شبيب حدثني أحمد بن عبدالله بن الحسن قال: وجدت في كتاب أبي أخبرنا عبدالملك العزرمي عن عطاء عن جابر قال: بعث رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم سرية كنت فيها فأصابتنا ظلمة فلم نعرف القبلة فقالت طائفة منا قد عرفنا القبلة هي ههنا قبل الشمال فصلوا وخطوا خطوطا فلما أصبحوا وطلعت الشمس أصبحت تلك الخطوط لغير القبلة فلما قفلنا من سفرنا سألنا النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فسكت وأنزل الله تعالى "ولله المشرق والمغرب فأينما تولوا فثم وجه الله" ثم رواه من حديث محمد بن عبيد الله العزرمي عن عطاء عن جابر به وقال الدارقطني قرئ على عبدالله بن عبد العزيز وأنا أسمع حدثكم داود بن عمر وأخبرنا محمد بن يزيد الواسطي عن محمد بن سالم عن عطاء عن جابر قال: كنا مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم في مسير فأصابنا غيم فتحيرنا فاختلفنا في القبلة فصلى كل رجل منا على حدة وجعل أحدنا يخط بين يديه لنعلم أمكنتنا فذكرنا ذلك للنبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فلم يأمرنا بالإعادة وقال "قد أجازت صلاتكم" ثم قال الدارقطني: كذا قال عن محمد بن سالم وقال غيره عن محمد بن عبدالله العزرمي عن عطاء وهما ضعيفان ورواه ابن مردويه أيضا من حديث الكلبي عن أبي صالح عن ابن عباس أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم بعث سرية فأخذتهم ضبابة فلم يهتدوا إلى القبلة فصلوا لغير القبلة ثم استبان لهم بعد ما طلعت الشمس أنهم صلوا لغير القبلة فلما جاءوا إلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم حدثوه فأنزل الله تعالى هذه الآية "ولله المشرق والمغرب فأينما تولوا فثم وجه الله" وهذه الأسانيد فيها ضعف ولعله يشد بعضها بعضا. وأما إعادة الصلاة لمن تبين له خطؤه ففيها قولان للعلماء وهذه دلائل على عدم القضاء والله أعلم. قال ابن جرير وقال آخرون بل نزلت هذه الآية في سبب النجاشي كما حدثنا محمد بن بشار أخبرنا معاذ بن هشام حدثني أبي عن قتادة أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: "إن أخا لكم قد مات فصلوا عليه" " قالوا: نصلي على رجل ليس بمسلم؟ قال فنزلت "وإن من أهل الكتاب لمن يؤمن بالله وما أنزل إليكم وما أنزل إليهم خاشعين لله" قال قتادة فقالوا: إنه كان لا يصلي إلى القبلة فأنزل الله "ولله المشرق والمغرب فأينما تولوا فثم وجه الله" وهذا غريب والله أعلم. وقد قيل إنه كان يصلي إلى بيت المقدس قبل أن يبلغه الناسخ إلى الكعبة كما حكاه القرطبي عن قتادة وذكر القرطبي أنه لما مات صلى عليه رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فأخذ بذلك من ذهب إلى الصلاة على الغائب قال: وهذا خاص عند أصحابنا من ثلاثة أوجه ـ أحدها ـ أنه عليه السلام شاهده حين سوى عليه طويت له الأرض. الثاني أنه لما لم يكن عنده من يصلي عليه صلى عليه واختاره ابن العربي قال القرطبي ويبعد أن يكون ملك مسلم ليس عنده أحد من قومه على دينه وقد أجاب ابن العربي عن هذا لعلهم لم يكن عندهم شرعية الصلاة على الميت وهذا جواب جيد. الثالث أنه عليه الصلاة والسلام إنما صلى عليه ليكون ذلك كالتأليف لبقية الملوك والله أعلم. وقد أورد الحافظ أبو بكر بن مردويه في تفسير هذه الآية من حديث أبي معشر عن محمد بن عمرو بن علقمة عن أبي سلمة عن أبي هريرة قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم "ما بين المشرق والمغرب قبلة لأهل المدينة وأهل الشام وأهل العراق" وله مناسبة ههنا وقد أخرجه الترمذي وابن ماجه من حديث أبي معشر واسمه نجيح بن عبدالرحمن السدي المدني به "ما بين المشرق والمغرب قبلة" وقال الترمذي وقد روى من غير وجه عن أبي هريرة وتكلم بعض أهل العلم في أبي معشر من قبل حفظه ثم قال الترمذي حدثني الحسن بن بكر المروزي أخبرنا المعلى بن منصور أخبرنا عبدالله بن جعفر المخزومي عن عثمان بن محمد بن المغيرة الأخنس عن أبي سعيد المقبري عن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال "ما بين المشرق والمغرب قبلة" ثم قال الترمذي هذا حديث حسن صحيح. وحكى عن البخاري أنه قال هذا أقوى من حديث أبي معشر وأصح قال الترمذي وقد روي عن غير واحد من الصحابة "ما بين المشرق والمغرب قبلة" منهم عمر بن الخطاب وعلي وابن عباس رضي الله عنهم أجمعين. وقال ابن عمر إذا جعلت المغرب عن يمينك والمشرق عن يسارك فما بينهما قبلة إذا استقبلت القبلة ثم قال ابن مردويه حدثنا علي بن أحمد بن عبدالرحمن أخبرنا يعقوب بن يوسف مولى بني هاشم أخبرنا شعيب بن أيوب أخبرنا ابن نمير عن عبدالله بن عمر عن نافع عن ابن عمر عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال "ما بين المشرق والمغرب قبلة" وقد رواه الدارقطني والبيهقي: وقال المشهور عن ابن عمر عن عمر رضي الله عنهما قوله: قال ابن جرير ويحتمل فأينما تولوا وجوهكم في دعائكم لي فهنالك وجهي أستجيب لكم دعاءكم كما حدثنا القاسم أخبرنا الحسين حدثني حجاج قال: قال ابن جريج: قال مجاهد لما نزلت ادعوني أستجب لكم قالوا إلى أين؟ فنزلت "فأينما تولوا فثم وجه الله" قال ابن جرير ومعنى قوله "إن الله واسع عليم" يسع خلقه كلهم بالكفاية والجود والإفضال: وأما قوله "عليم" فإنه يعني عليم بأعمالهم ما يغيب عنه منها شيء ولا يعزب عن علمه بل هو بجميعها عليم.

Facing the Qiblah (Direction of the Prayer)

This ruling brought comfort to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his Companions, who were driven out of Makkah and had to depart from the area of Al-Masjid Al-Haram. In Makkah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray in the direction of Bayt Al-Maqdis, while the Ka`bah was between him and the Qiblah. When the Messenger migrated to Al-Madinah, he faced Bayt Al-Maqdis for sixteen or seventeen months, and then Allah directed him to face Al-Ka`bah in prayer. This is why Allah said,

وَلِلَّهِ الْمَشْرِقُ وَالْمَغْرِبُ فَأَيْنَمَا تُوَلُّواْ فَثَمَّ وَجْهُ اللَّهِ

(And to Allah belong the east and the west, so wherever you turn (yourselves or your faces) there is the Face of Allah (and He is High above, over His Throne)).

`Ali bin Abi Talhah said that Ibn `Abbas said, "The first part of the Qur'an that was abrogated was about the Qiblah. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ migrated to Al-Madinah, which was inhabited by the Jews, he was at first commanded to face Bayt Al-Maqdis. The Jews were happy, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ faced Bayt Al-Maqdis for some ten months. However, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ liked to face the Qiblah of Ibrahim (Al-Ka`bah at Makkah), and he used to look to the sky and supplicate. So Allah revealed,

قَدْ نَرَى تَقَلُّبَ وَجْهِكَ فِي السَّمَآءِ

(Verily, We have seen the turning of your (Muhammad's) face towards the heaven) until,

فَوَلُّواْ وُجُوهَكُمْ شَطْرَهُ

(turn your faces (in prayer) in that direction) (2:144).

The Jews were disturbed by this development and said, `What made them change the direction of the Qiblah that they used to face' Allah revealed,

قُل لّلَّهِ الْمَشْرِقُ وَالْمَغْرِبُ

(Say (O Muhammad ): "To Allah belong both, east and the west") and,

فَأَيْنَمَا تُوَلُّواْ فَثَمَّ وَجْهُ اللَّهِ

(So wherever you turn (yourselves or your faces) there is the Face of Allah (and He is High above, over His Throne))."

`Ikrimah said that Ibn `Abbas said,

فَأَيْنَمَا تُوَلُّواْ فَثَمَّ وَجْهُ اللَّهِ

(So wherever you turn (yourselves or your faces) there is the Face of Allah (and He is High above, over His Throne)) means, "Allah's direction is wherever you face, east or west." Mujahid said that,

فَأَيْنَمَا تُوَلُّواْ فَثَمَّ وَجْهُ اللَّهِ

(So wherever you turn (yourselves or your faces) there is the Face of Allah (and He is High above, over His Throne))

means, "Wherever you may be, you have a Qiblah to face, that is, Al-Ka`bah."

However, it was said that Allah sent down this Ayah before the order to face the Ka`bah. Ibn Jarir said, "Others said that this Ayah was revealed to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ permitting the one praying voluntary prayers to face wherever they wish in the east or west, while traveling, when in fear and when facing the enemy." For instance, Ibn `Umar used to face whatever direction his animal was headed and proclaim that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did the same, explaining the Ayah,

فَأَيْنَمَا تُوَلُّواْ فَثَمَّ وَجْهُ اللَّهِ

(So wherever you turn (yourselves or your faces) there is the Face of Allah)."

That Hadith was also collected by Muslim, At-Tirmidhi, An-Nasa'i, Ibn Abi Hatim, Ibn Marduwyah, and its origin is in the Two Sahihs from Ibn `Umar and `Amr bin Rabi`ah without mentioning the Ayah. In his Sahih, Al-Bukhari recorded that Nafi` said that whenever Ibn `Umar was asked about the prayer during times of fear, he used to describe it and would then say, "When the sense of fear is worse than that, pray while standing, or while riding, whether facing the Qiblah or not." Nafi` then said, "I think Ibn `Umar mentioned that from the Prophet ." It was also said that the Ayah was revealed about those who are unable to find the correct direction of the Qiblah in the dark or due to cloudy skies and, thus, prayed in a direction other than the Qiblah by mistake.

The Qiblah for the People of Al-Madinah is what is between the East and the West

In his Tafsir of this Ayah (2:115), Al-Hafiz Ibn Marduwyah recorded that Abu Hurayrah said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,

«مَا بَيْنَ الْمَشْرِقِ وَالْمَغْرِبِ قِبْلَةٌ لِأَهْلِ الْمَدِينَةِ وَأَهْلِ الشَّامِ وَأَهْلِ الْعِرَاق»

(What is between the east and the west is the Qiblah for the people of Al-Madinah, Ash-Sham and `Iraq.)

At-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah recorded this Hadith with the wording,

«مَا بَيْنَ الْمَشْرِقِ وَالْمَغْرِبِ قِبْلَة»

(What is between the east and the west is a Qiblah.)

Ibn Jarir said, "The meaning of Allah's statement;

إِنَّ اللَّهَ وَسِعٌ عَلِيمٌ

(Surely, Allah is Sufficient (for His creatures' needs), Knowing) is that Allah encompasses all His Creation by providing them with sufficient needs and by His generosity and favor. His statement,

عَلِيمٌ

(Knowing) means He is knowledgeable of their deeds and nothing escapes His watch, nor is He unaware of anything. Rather, His knowledge encompasses everything."

The following was revealed either when the Jews criticised the change of the direction of prayer qibla or concerning the supererogatory prayers on animal-back during journeys which one may pray in any direction To God belong the East and the West that is the entire earth because these two directions represent both sides of it the earth; whithersoever you turn your faces in prayer by His command there is the Face of God the direction of prayer with which He is pleased. Lo! God is Embracing His bounty embracing all things Knowing how to manage His creation.

In order to understand these two verses, one should keep in mind three different incidents connected with the three groups hostile to Islam, all of which were, in one way or another, guilty of preventing people from worshipping Allah in mosques and of laying them waste.

(1) When Allah changed the Qiblah قبلہ that is to say, commanded the Muslims to turn towards the Ka'bah کعبہ in their Salah, and not towards the Baytul-Maqdis بیت المقدس --, the Jews raised all kinds of objections to it, and tried to produce in the minds of the Muslims doubts and misgiving which, had they taken root, would have led to the denial of the Holy Prophet g and to the giving up of prescribed Salah, thus laying waste the mosque of the Holy Prophet ﷺ .

(2) The Romans had once invaded Jerusalem, and the ignorant among them had polluted the Baytul-Maqdis, which naturally prevented people from performing Salah in this mosque. The Christians in a way looked upon the Romans as their ancestors; moreover, the humiliation of the Jews was in itself pleasing to them. Thus, in refusing to condemn this misdeed of the Romans, the Christians too were being indirectly responsible for laying waste the mosque.

(3) At the time of the peace of Hudaybiyyah حدیبیہ ، the mushrikin (associators) did not allow the Holy Prophet ﷺ to enter Makkah and to perform the Hajj. So, this group too was guilty of the same sin.

According to the blessed Companion ` Abdullah ibn ` Abbas ؓ ، Verse 114 refers to the second of these three incidents -- the commentator Ibn Jarir too accepts this view. But the commentator Ibn Kathir (رح) follows Ibn Zayd ؓ in preferring the third as being the occasion on which this verse was revealed. The Holy Qur'an, however, speaks in general terms of the mosques of Allah" so as to lay down a regular and permanent law, for all the peoples, covering all the possible cases of desecrating mosques and of hindering the "remembrance" (ذکر) of Allah in any way and thus laying them waste -- it denounces those who are capable of such a misdeed as being "unjust" or "cruel", and threatens them with humiliation in this world and dire punishment in the other, for the dignity of a mosque requires that one should enter it in a spirit of lowliness and respect, and with the fear of Allah in one's heart.

The prediction of the Holy Qur'an came true. The groups which had been trying to lay waste the mosques were soon humiliated, and came under the Muslim rule. They are, of course, to meet a dire punishment in the other world for being disbelievers, but the punishment will be all the more severe on account of this additional sin.

The earlier verses have told us how each of these groups claimed to be on the right path. The present verse, in referring to their desecration of mosques, refutes this claim as being a shameless pretension on the part of those whose behaviour itself gives them the lie.

As for Verse 115, let us recall that the idolaters compelled the Holy Prophet ﷺ to migrate from Makkah to Madinah, and thus separated him from the Ka'bah کعبہ (the incident is, of course, known as the Hijrah ھجرہ ). For some sixteen or seventeen months after that, the Muslims had to, under the commandment of Allah, turn towards the Baytul-Maqdis بیت المقدس (at Jerusalem) while offering Salah. But the Holy Prophet ﷺ felt a deep longing for turning towards the Ka'bah, and from time to time he would look upwards, waiting for the Archangel Jibra'il (علیہ السلام) to come with a new commandment in this respect. Finally, such a commandment did come, and Allah changed the orientation (Qiblah). Speaking of this modification, the Holy Qur'an says:

قَدْ نَرَ‌ىٰ تَقَلُّبَ وَجْهِكَ فِي السَّمَاءِ ۖ فَلَنُوَلِّيَنَّكَ قِبْلَةً تَرْ‌ضَاهَا ۚ فَوَلِّ وَجْهَكَ شَطْرَ‌ الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَ‌امِ ۚ وَحَيْثُ مَا كُنتُمْ فَوَلُّوا وُجُوهَكُمْ شَطْرَ‌هُ ۗ

We do see how you raise your face again and again towards the sky. So, We are going to give you the orientation which you desire. Therefore, turn your face towards the Holy Mosque at Makkah, and all of you too, wheresoever you may be, turn towards it." (2:144)

This new commandment naturally made the Muslims very happy, but the Jews, in their habitual malice, made it an occasion for taunting them and accusing them of going against the way of the earlier prophets.

Thus, there are two facets to Verse 115. On the one hand, it is an answer to the objection raised by the Jews; on the other hand, it brings comfort to the Holy Prophet and to the blessed Companions. The verse points out that had Allah been limited to any one direction, a fixed and permanent orientation would have been necessary for worshipping Him, but that, being infinite and beyond all possible limitations and qualifications, He is the Lord of the East and the West and of all conceivable directions -- He is everywhere, and surrounds everything. Wheresoever a man turns, he shall find Allah "facing" him -- that is to say, ready to accept his prayers and to shower His bounties on him. Consequently, neither does the Baitui-Maqdis بیت المقدس nor the Ka'bah enjoy an inherent or inalienable superiority; either of them can acquire a position of privilege only through divine ordination. All that matters is to obey the commandment of Allah, which alone can make one worthy of receiving His grace. In order to win His pleasure, one has to orient oneself according to what He Himself has determined. If, in spite of being infinite and free from all limitations, Allah has yet fixed a particular orientation, it is because He is Omniscient, and knows what is the best in a certain situation and for a certain people.

Although it is not possible for man to comprehend fully the wisdom which is inherently present in each and every divine commandment, yet the fixing of a definite orientation for Salah has a very obvious raison d'etre. Whichever way one turns, one would, no doubt, find Allah "facing" him; but if one has to choose a direction every time one starts to pray, it would only mean a dispersion of one's attention. And when several men are offering their prayers jointly it would really be odd if each one of them adopts a different orientation. So, a fixed orientation for all helps the individual and the groups both in acquiring the necessary concentration of mind and the sense of a joint purpose.

This explanation satisfactorily dispels the objection often raised by certain antagonists who accuse the Muslims of being the worshippers of the Ka'bah." If, by way of self-justification, they should still assert that they too keep the idols in front of them while meditating or worshipping for the same purpose of attaining a state of concentration, the claim does in no way reinforce their accusation against the Muslims. Moreover, an impartial investigation into the respective attitudes and frames of minds would easily show how genuine the Muslims are in their claim to be worshipping no one but Allah, and how dubious the position of the others is in this respect. Even if we accept the claim that idols or icons are no more than a means to an end, one would, in employing idols as a "support", still he required to produce a relevant injunction from a Shari'ah which has not been abrogated as yet. Today, the Muslims alone possess such a Shari'ah.

Before we proceed, we must sound a note of caution. Verse 115 says that whichever way one turns, one would find "the face of Allah", and that Allah being "All-Embracing" surrounds everything. Wisdom lies in not trying to investigate unnecessarily into the meanings of these or similar statements. For, just as it is not at all possible for a creature to comprehend fully the "Being" (Dhat ذات ) of Allah, it is equally impossible to comprehend the essential reality of the "Attributes" (Sifat صفات). All that man is required to do is to have a general faith in the Realities of the Divine Order - there is no obligation for him to look into the particularities of this sphere which is totally beyond human reach.

(Unto Allah belong the East and the West�) [2:115]. There is a scholarly disagreement regarding the occasion of revelation of this Qur'anic verse. Abu Mansur al-Mansuri informed us> al-Hafiz 'Ali ibn 'Umar> Abu Muhammad Isma'il ibn 'Ali> al-Hasan ibn 'Ali ibn Shabib al-'Umari> Ahmad ibn 'Ubayd Allah ibn al-Hasan al-'Anbari who said: �I found written in my father's epistle: 'Abd al-Malik al-'Arzami narrated to us> 'Ata' ibn Rabah> Jabir ibn 'Abd al-Malik who said: 'The Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, sent a military expedition in which I was present. It was dark and so we could not determine the precise direction of the qiblah. Some of us said: we know the exact direction; it is toward the North. They prayed and drew lines. Some others said: the qiblah is toward the South. They prayed and drew lines. When it was morning and the sun had risen up, they discovered that their lines were pointed to a different direction to that of the qiblah. When we returned from our journey we asked the Prophet, Allah bless him and give him peace, about this but he did not give us an answer. Allah, exalted is He, then revealed this verse (Unto Allah belong the East and the West�)' �. Abu Mansur informed us> 'Ali> Yahya ibn Sa'id>Muhammad ibn Isma'il al-Ahmasi> Waki'> Ash'ath al-Samman> 'Asim ibn 'Ubayd Allah> 'Abd Allah ibn 'Amir ibn Rabi'ah> his father who said: �We were praying with the Prophet, Allah bless him and give him peace, while on a journey. And because it was a dark night we could not determine the precise direction of the qiblah. Each man prayed toward whichever direction he thought was right. In the following morning, we mentioned what had happened to the Prophet, Allah bless him and give him peace, and then the verse (Unto Allah belong the East and the West�) was revealed�. Ibn 'Umar is of the opinion that the above verse is about voluntary offering of supererogatory prayers. Abu'l-Qasim ibn Sa'dan informed us> Muhammad ibn 'Abd Allah al-Hafiz> Muhammad ibn Ya'qub> Abu'l-Bukhturi 'Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Shakir> Abu Usamah> 'Abd al-Malik ibn Sulayman> Sa'id ibn Jubayr> Ibn 'Umar who said: �The verses (Unto Allah belong the East and the West�) was revealed so that one prays toward whatever direction one's mount directs one upon offering supererogatory prayer�.
