{ وَأَمَّا الْجِدَارُ ْ} الذي أقمته { فَكَانَ لِغُلَامَيْنِ يَتِيمَيْنِ فِي الْمَدِينَةِ وَكَانَ تَحْتَهُ كَنْزٌ لَهُمَا وَكَانَ أَبُوهُمَا صَالِحًا ْ} أي: حالهما تقتضي الرأفة بهما ورحمتهما، لكونهما صغيرين عدما أباهما، وحفظهما الله أيضا بصلاح والدهما. { فَأَرَادَ رَبُّكَ أَنْ يَبْلُغَا أَشُدَّهُمَا وَيَسْتَخْرِجَا كَنْزَهُمَا ْ} أي: فلهذا هدمت الجدار، واستخرجت ما تحته من كنزهما، وأعدته مجانا. { رَحْمَةً مِنْ رَبِّكَ ْ} أي: هذا الذي فعلته رحمة من الله، آتاها الله عبده الخضر { وَمَا فَعَلْتُهُ عَنْ أَمْرِي ْ} أي: أتيت شيئا من قبل نفسي، ومجرد إرادتي، وإنما ذلك من رحمة الله وأمره. { ذَلِكَ ْ} الذي فسرته لك { تَأْوِيلُ مَا لَمْ تَسْطِعْ عَلَيْهِ صَبْرًا ْ} وفي هذه القصة العجيبة الجليلة، من الفوائد والأحكام والقواعد شيء كثير، ننبه على بعضه بعون الله. فمنها فضيلة العلم، والرحلة في طلبه، وأنه أهم الأمور، فإن موسى عليه السلام رحل مسافة طويلة، ولقي النصب في طلبه، وترك القعود عند بني إسرائيل، لتعليمهم وإرشادهم، واختار السفر لزيادة العلم على ذلك. ومنها: البداءة بالأهم فالأهم، فإن زيادة العلم وعلم الإنسان أهم من ترك ذلك، والاشتغال بالتعليم من دون تزود من العلم، والجمع بين الأمرين أكمل. ومنها: جواز أخذ الخادم في الحضر والسفر لكفاية المؤن، وطلب الراحة، كما فعل موسى. ومنها: أن المسافر لطلب علم أو جهاد أو نحوه، إذا اقتضت المصلحة الإخبار بمطلبه، وأين يريده، فإنه أكمل من كتمه، فإن في إظهاره فوائد من الاستعداد له عدته، وإتيان الأمر على بصيرة، وإظهارًا لشرف هذه العبادة الجليلة، كما قال موسى: { لَا أَبْرَحُ حَتَّى أَبْلُغَ مَجْمَعَ الْبَحْرَيْنِ أَوْ أَمْضِيَ حُقُبًا ْ} وكما أخبر النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم أصحابه حين غزا تبوك بوجهه، مع أن عادته التورية، وذلك تبع للمصلحة. ومنها: إضافة الشر وأسبابه إلى الشيطان، على وجه التسويل والتزيين، وإن كان الكل بقضاء الله وقدره، لقول فتى موسى: { وَمَا أَنْسَانِيهُ إِلَّا الشَّيْطَانُ أَنْ أَذْكُرَهُ ْ} ومنها: جواز إخبار الإنسان عما هو من مقتضى طبيعة النفس، من نصب أو جوع، أو عطش، إذا لم يكن على وجه التسخط وكان صدقا، لقول موسى: { لَقَدْ لَقِينَا مِنْ سَفَرِنَا هَذَا نَصَبًا ْ} ومنها: استحباب كون خادم الإنسان، ذكيا فطنا كيسا، ليتم له أمره الذي يريده. ومنها: استحباب إطعام الإنسان خادمه من مأكله، وأكلهما جميعا، لأن ظاهر قوله: { آتِنَا غَدَاءَنَا ْ} إضافة إلى الجميع، أنه أكل هو وهو جميعا. ومنها: أن المعونة تنزل على العبد على حسب قيامه بالمأمور به، وأن الموافق لأمر الله، يعان ما لا يعان غيره لقوله: { لَقَدْ لَقِينَا مِنْ سَفَرِنَا هَذَا نَصَبًا ْ} والإشارة إلى السفر المجاوز، لمجمع البحرين، وأما الأول، فلم يشتك منه التعب، مع طوله، لأنه هو السفرعلى الحقيقة. وأما الأخير، فالظاهر أنه بعض يوم، لأنهم فقدوا الحوت حين أووا إلى الصخرة، فالظاهر أنهم باتوا عندها، ثم ساروا من الغد، حتى إذا جاء وقت الغداء قال موسى لفتاه { آتِنَا غَدَاءَنَا ْ} فحينئذ تذكر أنه نسيه في الموضع الذي إليه منتهى قصده. ومنها: أن ذلك العبد الذي لقياه، ليس نبيا، بل عبدا صالحا، لأنه وصفه بالعبودية، وذكر منة الله عليه بالرحمة والعلم، ولم يذكر رسالته ولا نبوته، ولو كان نبيا، لذكر ذلك كما ذكره غيره. وأما قوله في آخر القصة: { وَمَا فَعَلْتُهُ عَنْ أَمْرِي ْ} فإنه لا يدل على أنه نبي وإنما يدل على الإلهام والتحديث، كما يكون لغير الأنبياء، كما قال تعالى { وَأَوْحَيْنَا إِلَى أُمِّ مُوسَى أَنْ أَرْضِعِيهِ ْ} { وَأَوْحَى رَبُّكَ إِلَى النَّحْلِ أَنِ اتَّخِذِي مِنَ الْجِبَالِ بُيُوتًا ْ} ومنها: أن العلم الذي يعلمه الله [لعباده] نوعان: علم مكتسب يدركه العبد بجده واجتهاده. ونوع علم لدني، يهبه الله لمن يمن عليه من عباده لقوله { وَعَلَّمْنَاهُ مِنْ لَدُنَّا عِلْمًا ْ} ومنها: التأدب مع المعلم، وخطاب المتعلم إياه ألطف خطاب، لقول موسى عليه السلام: { هَلْ أَتَّبِعُكَ عَلَى أَنْ تُعَلِّمَنِ مِمَّا عُلِّمْتَ رُشْدًا ْ} فأخرج الكلام بصورة الملاطفة والمشاورة، وأنك هل تأذن لي في ذلك أم لا، وإقراره بأنه يتعلم منه، بخلاف ما عليه أهل الجفاء أو الكبر، الذي لا يظهر للمعلم افتقارهم إلى علمه، بل يدعي أنه يتعاون هم وإياه، بل ربما ظن أنه يعلم معلمه، وهو جاهل جدا، فالذل للمعلم، وإظهار الحاجة إلى تعليمه، من أنفع شيء للمتعلم. ومنها تواضع الفاضل للتعلم ممن دونه، فإن موسى -بلا شك- أفضل من الخضر. ومنها: تعلم العالم الفاضل للعلم الذي لم يتمهر فيه، ممن مهر فيه، وإن كان دونه في العلم بدرجات كثيرة. فإن موسى عليه السلام من أولي العزم من المرسلين، الذين منحهم الله وأعطاهم من العلم ما لم يعط سواهم، ولكن في هذا العلم الخاص كان عند الخضر، ما ليس عنده، فلهذا حرص على التعلم منه. فعلى هذا، لا ينبغي للفقيه المحدث، إذا كان قاصرا في علم النحو، أو الصرف، أو نحوه من العلوم، أن لا يتعلمه ممن مهر فيه، وإن لم يكن محدثا ولا فقيها. ومنها: إضافة العلم وغيره من الفضائل لله تعالى، والإقرار بذلك، وشكر الله عليها لقوله: { تُعَلِّمَنِ مِمَّا عُلِّمْتَ ْ} أي: مما علمك الله تعالى. ومنها: أن العلم النافع، هو العلم المرشد إلى الخير، فكل علم يكون فيه رشد وهداية لطرق الخير، وتحذير عن طريق الشر، أو وسيلة لذلك، فإنه من العلم النافع، وما سوى ذلك، فإما أن يكون ضارا، أو ليس فيه فائدة لقوله: { أَنْ تُعَلِّمَنِ مِمَّا عُلِّمْتَ رُشْدًا ْ} ومنها: أن من ليس له قوة الصبر على صحبة العالم والعلم، وحسن الثبات على ذلك، أنه يفوته بحسب عدم صبره كثير من العلم فمن لا صبر له لا يدرك العلم، ومن استعمل الصبر ولازمه، أدرك به كل أمر سعى فيه، لقول الخضر -يعتذر من موسى بذكر المانع لموسى في الأخذ عنه- إنه لا يصبر معه. ومنها: أن السبب الكبير لحصول الصبر، إحاطة الإنسان علما وخبرة، بذلك الأمر، الذي أمر بالصبر عليه، وإلا فالذي لا يدريه، أو لا يدري غايته ولا نتيجته، ولا فائدته وثمرته ليس عنده سبب الصبر لقوله: { وَكَيْفَ تَصْبِرُ عَلَى مَا لَمْ تُحِطْ بِهِ خُبْرًا ْ} فجعل الموجب لعدم صبره، وعدم إحاطته خبرا بالأمر. ومنها: الأمر بالتأني والتثبت، وعدم المبادرة إلى الحكم على الشيء، حتى يعرف ما يراد منه وما هو المقصود. ومنها: تعليق الأمور المستقبلية التي من أفعال العباد بالمشيئة، وأن لا يقول الإنسان للشيء: إني فاعل ذلك في المستقبل، إلا أن يقول { إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ ْ} ومنها: أن العزم على فعل الشيء، ليس بمنزلة فعله، فإن موسى قال: { سَتَجِدُنِي إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ صَابِرًا ْ} فوطن نفسه على الصبر ولم يفعل. ومنها: أن المعلم إذا رأى المصلحة في إيزاعه للمتعلم أن يترك الابتداء في السؤال عن بعض الأشياء، حتى يكون المعلم هو الذي يوقفه عليها، فإن المصلحة تتبع، كما إذا كان فهمه قاصرا، أو نهاه عن الدقيق في سؤال الأشياء التي غيرها أهم منها، أو لا يدركها ذهنه، أو يسأل سؤالا، لا يتعلق في موضع البحث. ومنها: جواز ركوب البحر، في غير الحالة التي يخاف منها. ومنها: أن الناسي غير مؤاخذ بنسيانه لا في حق الله، ولا في حقوق العباد لقوله: { لَا تُؤَاخِذْنِي بِمَا نَسِيتُ ْ} ومنها: أنه ينبغي للإنسان أن يأخذ من أخلاق الناس ومعاملاتهم، العفو منها، وما سمحت به أنفسهم، ولا ينبغي له أن يكلفهم ما لا يطيقون، أو يشق عليهم ويرهقهم، فإن هذا مدعاة إلى النفور منه والسآمة، بل يأخذ المتيسر ليتيسر له الأمر. ومنها: أن الأمور تجري أحكامها على ظاهرها، وتعلق بها الأحكام الدنيوية، في الأموال، والدماء وغيرها، فإن موسى عليه السلام، أنكر على الخضر خرقه السفينة، وقتل الغلام، وأن هذه الأمور ظاهرها، أنها من المنكر، وموسى عليه السلام لا يسعه السكوت عنها، في غير هذه الحال، التي صحب عليها الخضر، فاستعجل عليه السلام، وبادر إلى الحكم في حالتها العامة، ولم يلتفت إلى هذا العارض، الذي يوجب عليه الصبر، وعدم المبادرة إلى الإنكار. ومنها: القاعدة الكبيرة الجليلة وهو أنه \" يدفع الشر الكبير بارتكاب الشر الصغير \" ويراعي أكبر المصلحتين، بتفويت أدناهما، فإن قتل الغلام شر، ولكن بقاءه حتى يفتن أبويه عن دينهما، أعظم شرا منه، وبقاء الغلام من دون قتل وعصمته، وإن كان يظن أنه خير، فالخير ببقاء دين أبويه، وإيمانهما خير من ذلك، فلذلك قتله الخضر، وتحت هذه القاعدة من الفروع والفوائد، ما لا يدخل تحت الحصر، فتزاحم المصالح والمفاسد كلها، داخل في هذا. ومنها: القاعدة الكبيرة أيضا وهي أن \" عمل الإنسان في مال غيره، إذا كان على وجه المصلحة وإزالة المفسدة، أنه يجوز، ولو بلا إذن حتى ولو ترتب على عمله إتلاف بعض مال الغير \" كما خرق الخضر السفينة لتعيب، فتسلم من غصب الملك الظالم. فعلى هذا لو وقع حرق، أو غرق، أو نحوهما، في دار إنسان أو ماله، وكان إتلاف بعض المال، أو هدم بعض الدار، فيه سلامة للباقي، جاز للإنسان بل شرع له ذلك، حفظا لمال الغير، وكذلك لو أراد ظالم أخذ مال الغير، ودفع إليه إنسان بعض المال افتداء للباقي جاز، ولو من غير إذن. ومنها: أن العمل يجوز في البحر، كما يجوز في البر لقوله: { يَعْمَلُونَ فِي الْبَحْرِ ْ} ولم ينكر عليهم عملهم. ومنها: أن المسكين قد يكون له مال لا يبلغ كفايته، ولا يخرج بذلك عن اسم المسكنة، لأن الله أخبر أن هؤلاء المساكين، لهم سفينة. ومنها: أن القتل من أكبر الذنوب لقوله في قتل الغلام { لَقَدْ جِئْتَ شَيْئًا نُكْرًا ْ} ومنها: أن القتل قصاصا غير منكر لقوله { بِغَيْرِ نَفْسٍ ْ} ومنها: أن العبد الصالح يحفظه الله في نفسه، وفي ذريته. ومنها: أن خدمة الصالحين، أو من يتعلق بهم، أفضل من غيرها، لأنه علل استخراج كنزهما، وإقامة جدارهما، أن أباهما صالح. ومنها: استعمال الأدب مع الله تعالى في الألفاظ، فإن الخضر أضاف عيب السفينة إلى نفسه بقوله { فَأَرَدْتُ أَنْ أَعِيبَهَا ْ} وأما الخير، فأضافه إلى الله تعالى لقوله: { فَأَرَادَ رَبُّكَ أَنْ يَبْلُغَا أَشُدَّهُمَا وَيَسْتَخْرِجَا كَنْزَهُمَا رَحْمَةً مِنْ رَبِّكَ ْ} كما قال إبراهيم عليه السلام { وَإِذَا مَرِضْتُ فَهُوَ يَشْفِينِ ْ} وقالت الجن: { وَأَنَّا لَا نَدْرِي أَشَرٌّ أُرِيدَ بِمَنْ فِي الْأَرْضِ أَمْ أَرَادَ بِهِمْ رَبُّهُمْ رَشَدًا ْ} مع أن الكل بقضاء الله وقدره. ومنها: أنه ينبغي للصاحب أن لا يفارق صاحبه في حالة من الأحوال، ويترك صحبته، حتى يعتبه، ويعذر منه، كما فعل الخضر مع موسى. ومنها: أن موافقة الصاحب لصاحبه، في غير الأمور المحذورة، مدعاة وسبب لبقاء الصحبة وتأكدها، كما أن عدم الموافقة سبب لقطع المرافقة. ومنها: أن هذه القضايا التي أجراها الخضر هي قدر محض أجراها الله وجعلها على يد هذا العبد الصالح، ليستدل العباد بذلك على ألطافه في أقضيته، وأنه يقدر على العبد أمورا يكرهها جدا، وهي صلاح دينه، كما في قضية الغلام، أو وهي صلاح دنياه كما في قضية السفينة، فأراهم نموذجا من لطفه وكرمه، ليعرفوا ويرضوا غاية الرضا بأقداره المكروهة.

في هذه الآية دليل على إطلاق القرية على المدينة لأنه قال أولا " حتى إذا أتيا أهل قرية " وقال ههنا " فكان لغلامين يتيمين في المدينة " كما قال تعالى " فكأين من قرية هي أشد قوة من قريتك التي أخرجتك " " وقالوا لولا نزل هدا القرآن على رجل من القريتين عظيم " يعني مكة والطائف ومعنى الآية أن هذا الجدار إنما أصلحته لأنه كان لغلامين يتيمين في المدينة وكان تحته كنز لهما قال عكرمة وقتادة وغير واحد كان تحته مال مدفون لهما وهو ظاهر السياق من الآية وهو اختيار ابن جرير رحمه الله وقال العوفي عن ابن عباس: كان تحته كنز علم وكذا قال سعيد بن جبير وقال مجاهد صحف فيها علم وقد ورد في حديث مرفوع ما يقوي ذلك.قال الحافظ أبو بكر أحمد بن عمرو بن عبد الخالق البزار في مسنده المشهور حدثنا إبراهيم بن سعيد الجوهري حدثنا بشر بن المنذر حدثنا الحارث بن عبد الله اليحصبي عن عياش بن عباس الغساني عن أبي حجيرة عن أبي ذر رفعه قال: إن الكنز الذي ذكره الله في كتابه لوح من ذهب مصمت مكتوب فيه: عجبت لمن أيقن بالقدر لم نصب وعجبت لمن ذكر النار لم ضحك وعجبت لمن ذكر الموت لم غفل لا إله إلا الله محمد رسول الله.وبشر بن المنذر هذا يقال له قاضي المصيصة قال الحافظ أبو جعفر العقيلي: في حديثه وهم وقد رُوي في هذا آثار عن السلف فقال ابن جرير في تفسيره: حدثني يعقوب حدثنا الحسن بن حبيب بن ندبة حدثنا سلمة عن نعيم العنبري وكان من جلساء الحسن قال: سمعت الحسن يعني البصري يقول في قوله " وكان تحته كنز لهما " قال لوح من ذهب مكتوب فيه: بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم عجبت لمن يؤمن بالقدر كيف يحزن وعجبت لمن يؤمن بالموت كيف يفرح وعجبت لمن يعرف الدنيا ومقلبها بأهلها كيف يطمئن إليها لا إله إلا الله محمد رسول الله.وحدثني يونس أخبرنا ابن وهب أخبرني عبد الله بن عباس عن عمر مولي غفرة قال: إن الكنز الذي قال الله في السورة التي يذكر فيها الكهف " وكان تحته كنز " لهما قال كان لوحًا من ذهب مصمت مكتوب فيه: بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم عجب لمن عرف النار ثم ضحك عجب لمن أيقن بالقدر ثم نصب عجب لمن أيقن بالموت ثم أمن أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وأشهد أن محمدًا عبده ورسوله وحدثني أحمد بن حازم الغفاري حدثنا هنادة بنت مالك الشيبانية قالت سمعت صاحبي حماد بن الوليد الثقفي يقول: سمعت جعفر بن محمد يقول في قول الله تعالى " وكان تحته كنز لهما " قال سطران ونصف لم يتم الثالث: عجبت للمؤمن بالرزق كيف يتعب وعجبت للمؤمن بالحساب كيف يغفل وعجبت للمؤمن بالموت كيف يفرح.وقد قال الله " وإن كان مثقال حبة من خردل أتينا بها وكفى بنا حاسبين " قالت وذكر أنهما حفظا بصلاح أبيهما ولم يذكر منهما صلاح وكان بينهما وبين الأب الذي حفظا به سبعة آباء وكان نساجًا وهذا الذي ذكره هؤلاء الأئمة وورد به الحديث المتقدم وإن صح لا ينافي قول عكرمة أنه كان مالا لأنهم ذكروا أنه كان لوحًا من ذهب وفيه مال جزيل أكثر ما زادوا أنه كان مودعًا فيه علم وهو حكم ومواعظ والله أعلم وقوله " وكان أبوهما صالحا " فيه دليل على أن الرجل الصالح يحفظ في ذريته وتشمل بركة عبادته لهم في الدنيا والآخرة بشفاعته فيهم ورفع درجتهم إلى أعلى درجة في الجنة لتقر عينه بهم كما جاء في القرآن ووردت به السنة.قال سعيد بن جبير: عن ابن عباس حفظا بصلاح أبيهما ولم يذكر لهما صلاحًا وتقدم أنه كان الأب السابع فالله أعلم.وقوله " فأراد ربك أن يبلغا أشدّهما ويستخرجا كنزهما " ههنا أسند الإرادة إلى الله تعالى لأن بلوغهما الحلم لا يقدر عليه إلا الله وقال في الغلام فأردنا أن يبدلهما ربهما خيرًا منه زكاة وقال في السفينة فأردت أن أعيبها فالله أعلم.وقوله تعالى رحمة من ربك وما فعلته عن أمري أي هذا الذي فعلته في هذه الأحوال الثلاثة إنما هو من رحمة الله بمن ذكرنا من أصحاب السفينة ووالدي الغلام وولدي الرجل الصالح وما فعلته عن أمري أي لكني أمرت به ووقفت عليه وفيه دلالة لمن قال بنبوة الخضر عليه السلام مع ما تقدم من قوله " فوجدا عبدًا من عبادنا آتيناه رحمة من عندنا وعلمناه من لدنا علمًا " وقال آخرون كان رسولا وقيل بل كان ملكًا نقله الماوردي في تقسيره وذهب كثيرون إلى أنه لم يكن نبيًا بل كان وليًا فالله أعلم.وذكر ابن قتيبة في المعارف أن اسم الخضر بليا بن ملكان بن فالغ بن عامر بن شالخ بن أرفخشد بن سام بن نوح عليه السلام قالوا وكان يُكنى أبا العباس ويلقب بالخضر وكان من أبناء الملوك ذكره النووي في تهذيب الأسماء وحكى هو وغيره في كونه باقيًا إلى الآن ثم إلى يوم القيامة قولين ومال هو وابن الصلاح إلى بقائه وذكروا في ذك حكايات وآثارا عن السلف وغيرهم وجاء ذكره في بعض الأحاديث ولا يصح شيء من ذلك وأشهرها حديث التعزية وإسناده ضعيف ورجح آخرون من المحدثين وغيرهم خلاف ذلك واحتجوا بقوله تعالى " وما جعلنا لبشر من قبلك الخلد " وبقول النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يوم بدر " اللهم إن تهلك هذه العصابة لا تعبد في الأرض "وبأنه لم ينقل أنه جاء إلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ولا حضر عنده ولا قاتل معه ولو كان حيا لكان من أتباع النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وأصحابه لأنه عليه السلام كان مبعوثًا إلى جميع الثقلين الجن والإنس وقد قال " لو كان موسى وعيسى حيين لما وسعهما إلا اتباعي "وأخبر قبل موته بقليل أنه لا يبقى ممن هو على وجه الأرض إلى مائة سنة من ليلته تلك عين تطرف إلى غير ذلك من الدلائل. قال الإمام أحمد: حدثنا يحيى بن آدم حدثنا ابن المبارك عن معمر عن همام بن منبه عن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم في الخضر قال " إنما سُمي خضرا لأنه جلس على فروة بيضاء فإذا هي تهتز من تحته خضراء "ورواه أيضًا عن عبد الرزاق وقد ثبت أيضًا في صحيح البخاري عن همام عن أبي هريرة أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال " إنما سمي الخضر لأنه جلس على فروة فإذا هي تهتز من تحته خضراء "والمراد بالفروة ههنا الحشيش اليابس وهو الهشيم من النبات قاله عبد الرزاق.وقيل المراد بذلك وجه الأرض وقوله " ذلك تأويل مالم تسطع عليه صبرا " أي هذا تفسير ما ضقت به ذرعًا ولم تصبر حتى أخبرك به ابتداء ولما أن فسره له وبينه ووضحه وأزال المشكل قال " تسطع " وقبل ذلك كان الإشكال قويًا ثقيلا فقال " سأنبئك بتأويل ما لم تستطع عليه صبرا " فقابل الأثقل بالأثقل والأخف كما قال " فما اسطاعوا أن يظهروه " وهو الصعود إلى أعلاه " وما استطاعوا له نقبا " وهو أشق من ذلك فقابل كلا بما يناسبه لفظًا ومعنى والله أعلم.فإن قيل: فما بال فتى موسى ذكر في أول القصة ثم لم يذكر بعد ذلك ؟ فالجواب أن المقصود بالسياق إنما هو قصة موسى مع الخضر وذكر ما كان بينهما وفتى موسى معه تبع وقد صرح في الأحاديث المتقدمة في الصحاح وغيرها أنه يوشع بن نون وهو الذي كان يلي بني إسرائيل بعد موسى عليه السلام ؟ وهذا يدل على ضعف ما أورده ابن جرير في تفسيره حيث قال: حدثنا ابن حميد حدثنا سلمة حدثني ابن إسحاق عن الحسن بن عمارة عن أبيه عن عكرمة قال قيل لابن عباس: لم نسمع لفتى موسى بذكر حديث وقد كان معه قال ابن عباس فيما يذكر من حديث الفتى قال شرب الفتى من الماء فخلد فأخذه العالم فطابق به سفينة ثم أرسله في البحر فإنها لتموج به إلى يوم القيامة وذلك أنه لم يكن له أن يشرب منه فشرب إسناده ضعيف والحسن متروك وأبوه غير معروف.

Interpretation of why the Wall was repaired for no Charge

In this Ayah there is a proof that the word Qaryah (village) may be used to refer to a city (Madinah), because Allah first says,

حَتَّى إِذَآ أَتَيَآ أَهْلَ قَرْيَةٍ

(till when they came to the people of a town (Qaryah)) 18:77, but here He says:

فَكَانَ لِغُلَـمَيْنِ يَتِيمَيْنِ فِى الْمَدِينَةِ

(it belonged to two orphan boys in the town (Al-Madinah);) This is like the Ayat:

وَكَأَيِّن مِّن قَرْيَةٍ هِىَ أَشَدُّ قُوَّةً مِّن قَرْيَتِكَ الَّتِى أَخْرَجَتْكَ

(And many a town (Qaryah), stronger than your town which has driven you out We have destroyed) 47:13 and;

وَقَالُواْ لَوْلاَ نُزِّلَ هَـذَا الْقُرْءَانُ عَلَى رَجُلٍ مِّنَ الْقَرْيَتَيْنِ عَظِيمٍ

(And they say: "Why is not this Qur'an sent down to some great man of the two towns (Al-Qaryatayn)")43:31 meaning Makkah and At-Ta'if. The meaning of the Ayah 18:82 is: "I repaired this wall because it belonged to two orphan boys in the city, and underneath it was some treasure belonging to them." `Ikrimah, Qatadah and others said, "Underneath it there was some wealth that was buried for them." This meaning is apparent from the context of the Ayah, and is the view chosen by Ibn Jarir (may Allah have mercy on him).

وَكَانَ أَبُوهُمَا صَـلِحاً

(their father was a righteous man,) indicates that a righteous person's offspring will be taken care of, and that the blessing of his worship will extend to them in this world and in the Hereafter. This will occur through his intercession for them, as well as their status being raised to the highest levels of Paradise, so that he may find joy in them. This was stated in the Qur'an and reported in the Sunnah. Sa`id bin Jubayr narrated from Ibn `Abbas: "They were taken care of because their father was a righteous man, although it is not stated that they themselves were righteous."

فَأَرَادَ رَبُّكَ أَن يَبْلُغَآ أَشُدَّهُمَا وَيَسْتَخْرِجَا كَنزَهُمَا

(your Lord intended that they should attain their age of full strength and take out their treasure) Here will is attributed to Allah, the Exalted, because no one else is able to bring them to the age of full strength and puberty except Allah. In contrast, He said about the boy:

فَأَرَدْنَآ أَن يُبْدِلَهُمَا رَبُّهُمَا خَيْراً مِّنْهُ زَكَـوةً

(So we intended that their Lord should exchange him for them for one better in righteousness) and concerning the ship:

فَأَرَدتُّ أَنْ أَعِيبَهَا

(So I wished to make a defective damage in it,) And Allah knows best.

Was Al-Khidr a Prophet

رَحْمَةً مِّن رَّبِّكَ وَمَا فَعَلْتُهُ عَنْ أَمْرِى

(as a mercy from your Lord. And I did them not of my own accord.) Meaning, `These three things that I did, come from the mercy of Allah for those we have mentioned, the crew of the ship, the parents of the boy and the two sons of the righteous man; I was only commanded to do these things that were enjoined upon me.' This is proof and evidence in support of those who say that Al-Khidr, peace be upon him, was a Prophet, along with the Ayah which we have already quoted:

فَوَجَدَا عَبْدًا مِّنْ عِبَادِنَآ ءَاتَيْنَاهُ رَحْمَةً مِّنْ عِندِنَا وَعَلَّمْنَاهُ مِن لَّدُنَّا عِلْمًا

(Then they found one of Our servants, on whom We had bestowed mercy from Us, and whom We had taught knowledge from Us.) 18:65

Why he was called Al-Khidr

Imam Ahmad recorded that Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, said that the Prophet said concerning Al-Khidr؛

«إِنَّمَا سُمِّيَ خَضِرًا لِأَنَّهُ جَلَسَ عَلَى فَرْوَةٍ بَيْضَاءَ، فَإِذَا هِيَ تَهْتَزُّ مِنْ تَحْتِهِ خَضْرَاء»

(He was called Al-Khidr because he sat on a barren Farwah that turned white, then it turned green (Khadra') beneath him.) Imam Ahmad also recorded this from `Abdur-Razzaq. It was also recorded in Sahih Al-Bukhari from Hammam from Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,

«إِنَّمَا سُمِّي الْخَضِرَ لِأَنَّهُ جَلَسَ عَلَى فَرْوَةٍ، فَإِذَا هِيَ تَهْتَزُّ مِنْ تَحْتِهِ خَضْرَاء»

(He was called Al-Khidr because he sat on a barren Farwah and it turned green (Khadra') beneath him.) The meaning of Farwah here is a patch of withered vegetation. This was the view of `Abdur-Razzaq. It was also said that it means the face of the earth.

ذَلِكَ تَأْوِيلُ مَا لَمْ تَسْطِـع عَّلَيْهِ صَبْراً

(That is the interpretation of those (things) over which you could not be patient.) meaning, `this is the explanation of the things which you could not put up with or be patient with until I took the initiative of explaining them to you.' When he explained them and made them clear and solved the confusion, he used a milder form of the verb,

تَسْطِـع

(you could) When the matter was still confusing and very difficult, a more intensive form was used,

سَأُنَبِّئُكَ بِتَأْوِيلِ مَا لَمْ تَسْتَطِع عَّلَيْهِ صَبْراً

(I will tell you the interpretation of (those) things over which you were unable to be patient with) 18:78. The intensity of the verbal form used reflects the intensity of the confusion felt. This is like the Ayah:

فَمَا اسْطَـعُواْ أَن يَظْهَرُوهُ

(So they (Ya`juj and Ma`juj) were not able to scale it) 18:97 which means ascending to its highest point,

وَمَا اسْتَطَـعُواْ لَهُ نَقْبًا

(nor are they able to dig through it) 18:97 which is more difficult than the former. The intensity of the verbal form used reflects the difficulty of the action, which has to do with the subtleties of meaning. And Allah knows best. If one were to ask, what happened to the boy-servant of Musa who appears at the beginning of the story but then is not mentioned The answer is that the objective of the story is what happened between Musa and Al-Khidr. Musa's boy-servant was with him, following him. It is clearly mentioned in the Sahih Hadiths referred to above that he was Yusha` bin Nun, who was the one who became the leader of the Children of Israel after Musa, peace be upon him.

And as for the wall it belonged to two orphan boys who lived in the city and beneath it there was a treasure a buried trove of gold and silver belonging to them. Their father had been a righteous man and so because of his righteousness they were protected both in terms of their souls and their possessions and your Lord desired that they should come of age that is He desired for them the attainment of maturity and extract their treasure as a mercy from your Lord rahmatan min rabbik is a direct object denoting reason operated by the verb arāda ‘He desired’. And I did not do it namely what has been mentioned of his making a hole in the ship the slaying of the boy and the repair of the wall of my own accord that is out of my own choosing; nay it was because of a command in the form of an inspiration from God. This is the interpretation of that over which you could not maintain patience’ one may say istā‘a or istatā‘a to mean ‘he had the capacity for something’; in this instance and the previous one both forms of the verb have been used. Moreover there is a variety of expression in the use of fa-aradtu ‘I desired’ fa-aradnā ‘We desired’ and fa-arāda rabbuk ‘Your Lord desired’.

About the statement: وَكَانَ تَحْتَهُ كَنزٌ لَّهُمَا (and there was beneath it a treasure for them - 82), Sayyidna Abu al-Dard' ؓ has reported from the Holy Prophet ﷺ that it was a treasure chest of gold and silver. (Narrated by Tirmidhi and a1-Hakim, from Mazhari)

Sayyidna Ibn ` Abbas ؓ said that it was a tablet of gold inscribed with the following good counsel. This report was also narrated by Sayyidna ` Uthman ibn ` Affan ؓ عنہ with its chain of narrators ascending to the Holy Prophet ﷺ : (Qurtubi)

1. بسم اللہ الرحمٰن الرحیم Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim: With the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Very Merciful).

2. Amazing is the person who believes in destiny, then how could he despair.

3. Amazing is the person who believes that Allah Ta’ ala is the sponsor of all in their sustenance, still, why would he consume himself in striving for more than he needs and in achieving what is redundant.

4. Amazing is the person who believes in death yet, how could he remain all happy.

5. Amazing is the person who believes in the reckoning of the Hereafter yet, how could he afford to be heedless.

6. Amazing is the person who knows the world and its vicissitudes yet, how could he sit relaxed about it.

7. لا إله إلا اللہ محمد رسول اللہ (la ilaha illallah Muhammad rasulullah: There is no god but Allah Muhammad is a messenger of Allah).

The benefit of the righteousness of parents reaches children, and their children.

The statement: وَكَانَ أَبُوهُمَا صَالِحًا (and their father was a pious man - 82) carries a hint that arrangements were made to have the buried treasure secured for the orphan children through al-Khadir for the reason that the father of the orphan children was some pious man dear in the sight of Allah. Therefore, it was to grant his wish and to bring benefit to his children that Allah Ta’ ala made this arrangement. Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir says: 'It is because of the piety and righteousness of a servant of His that Allah Ta’ ala protects his children, and the children of his children, and his family, even the homes built around his own.' (Mazhari)

As in al-Qurtubi, sage Shibli used to say that he was a guarantee of peace for the city and the area adjoining it. When he died, it was soon after his burial that the disbelievers of Dailam crossed Euphrates and took over Baghdad. At that time, everyone was saying that they were struck by double distress - the death of Shibli and the sack of Dailam, (Qurtubi, p. 29, v. 11)

According to Tafsir Mazhari, this verse also indicates that people too should show consideration and affection for the children of the learned and the pious - unless, of course, they were to succumb to disbelief and sin.

Later, the word: اَشُدّ (ashudd) in: أَن يَبْلُغَا أَشُدَّهُمَا (that they reach their maturity - 82) is a plural form of: شدّہ (shiddah) meaning maturity, the age when one reaches full maturity and becomes able to decide what is good or bad for him. According to Imam Abu Hanifah (رح) ، this is the age of twenty-five years. Others put it at forty years because it appears in the Qur'an: حَتَّىٰ إِذَا بَلَغَ أَشُدَّهُ وَبَلَغَ أَرْ‌بَعِينَ سَنَةً (until when he reaches his maturity and reaches [ the age of ] forty years - al-Ahqaf, 46:15)

Prophetic Eloquence and the Nuances of Etiquette: An Example

Before we turn to this example, let us first understand that nothing can happen in this world, good or bad, without the will and intention of Allah Ta` ala. All phenomena of good and evil is as created by Him and is subservient to His intention and will. Things understood or named as evil or bad do deserve to be called as evil or bad in terms of particular individuals and particular circumstances. But, given a total world-view, they all are necessary and nothing but good in terms of being a Divine creation as based on wisdom.

In short, whatever calamity or accident stands activated in this world simply cannot materialize without the will and intention of Allah Ta` ala. In that respect, every good and evil can also be attributed to Allah Ta’ ala. But, the fact is that, given the creation of Allah Ta’ ala, no evil is evil. Therefore, etiquette demands that evil should not be attributed towards Allah Ta` ala. The words of Sayyidna Ibrahim (علیہ السلام) mentioned in the Qur'an: وَالَّذِي هُوَ يُطْعِمُنِي وَيَسْقِينِ وَإِذَا مَرِ‌ضْتُ فَهُوَ يَشْفِينِ (It is He who gives me [ things ] to eat and drink, [ 26:79] and when I am sick, it is He who cures me - 26:80) are a good example. They teach us the same etiquette when the provision of food and drink has been attributed to Allah Ta` ala. Then comes the provision of cure from sickness. This too has been attributed to Him. In between came the mention of sickness. He attributed it to himself in the words: وَإِذَا مَرِ‌ضْتُ فَهُوَ يَشْفِينِ and when I am sick, it is He who cures me) - not in the manner: When He makes me fall sick, He cures me too.

Let us now consider the diction of al-Khadir (علیہ السلام) . When he formed the intention of breaking the boat - which was obviously a vicious act - he attributed this intention to himself and said: اَرَدتُ (ara[ d ] tu: I wanted to make it defective - 79). After that, he mentioned the killing of the boy and wished someone would replace him who would be better than him. Here, there was evil in the act of killing while being blessed with better progeny in his place was something good. Therefore, because of this common factor, the form used was that of the first person, plural. It was said: اَرَدنَا (aradna: we wished - 81) so that whatever obvious evil there lies in it is beamed back to his own self and whatever good lies in it stands attributed to Allah Ta’ ala. As for the third event - setting the wall right to secure the property of the orphans - it was nothing but good. This was attributed entirely to Allah Ta` ala by saying: فَأَرَ‌ادَ رَ‌بُّكَ (fa arada rabbuk: So your Lord willed - 82).

Is al-Khadir (علیہ السلام) alive, or is he dead?

The event related to al-Khadir (علیہ السلام) mentioned in the Qur'an has nothing to do with the question of his life or death after it. Therefore, no clear statement in this regard is present in the Qur'an, and Sunnah. Some reports suggest his being alive till now while others tell us otherwise. Thus, scholarly opinion has always been at variance in this matter. Those who hold that he is alive argue on the basis of the narrative from. Sayyidna Anas ؓ carried by al-Hakim in his al-Mustadrak. It says, when the Holy Prophet ﷺ left this mortal world, there came a person in black and white beard. Tearing the crowd of people, he reached inside and started weeping. Then, turning to the noble Companions ؓ ، he said the following words:

اِنَّ فِی اللہِ عَزَآءً مَّن کُلِّ مُصِیبَۃِ وَّعِوَضاً مِّن کُلِّ فَآیٔتِ ، وَّ خَلَفاً مِّن کُلِّ ھَالِکِ ، فَاِلَی اللہِ فَاَنِیبُوا وَاِلَیہِ فَاَرغَبُوا وَنَظَرُہ ، اِلَیکُم فِی البَلَاء فَنظُرُوا فَاِنَّمَا المُصَابُ مَن لَّم یُجبَر

Indeed, in Allah there is endurance against all distress, and recompense of everything taken away, and He is the real caretaker for He alone survives after everyone is dead. So, return to Allah, turn to Him passionately and long for Him alone - because, deprived is he who has been deprived of the reward of enduring distress.

After having said these words, when the visitor departed, Sayyidna Abu Bakr and Sayyidna ` Ali ؓ said, he was al-Khadir. This narrative has also been reported by Ibn al-Jazri in his al-Hisn al-Hasin where the compiler is particular about including nothing but what is authentic.

And in Sahih Muslim, it appears that Dajjal (Imposter) will reach a point close to Madinah when a man of Madinah will come out to confront him. He will be the best of men during that time, or among the better ones. Abu Ishaq said, this person will be al-Khadir (علیہ السلام) .' (Qurtubi)

And Ibn Abi ad-Dunya has reported in Kitab al-Hawatif with necessary chains of authority that Sayyidna ` Ali ؓ met al-Khadir (علیہ السلام) who told him about a Du` a' which, if recited by anyone after every Salah, would bring for him great reward, forgiveness and mercy. That prayer is given below:

یَامَن لَّا یُشغِلُہ، سَمعِ ، َّیَا مَن لَّا تُغلِطُہُ المَسَآیٔلُ ، وَیَا مَن لَّا یَبرَمُ مَن اِلحَاحِ المُلِحَّینَ ، اَذِقنِی بَردَ عَفوِکَ وَ حِلَاوَۃَ مَغفِرَتِکَ

O He whose hearing of one thing does not hamper His hearing of the other,

And 0 He who never errs in responding to (millions of) requests simultaneously,

And 0 He who never becomes weary of the plaints made repeatedly by those who make them in prayers, let me, in Your mercy, have a cool taste of Your forgiveness and sweetness of Your pardon. (Qurtubi)

Then, within the same book, exactly the same event, the same prayer and the same incidence of meeting with al-Khadir (علیہ السلام) has been reported from Sayyidna ` Umar ؓ as well. (Qurtubi)

Similar to this, there are countless events relating to al-Khadir (علیہ السلام) that have been attributed to the community's men of Allah ( اَولِیَاء awliya' ).

As for those who do not accept the likelihood of al-Khadir (علیہ السلام) being alive, their major argument comes from the Hadith of Sayyida ` Abdullah ibn ` Umar ؓ appearing in Sahih Muslim. He says, 'one night, the Holy Prophet ﷺ led the ` Isha' prayer for us during the latter days of his blessed life. After having turned for salam, he rose and said these words:

اَرَیٔتکُم لَیلُتَکُم ھٰذِۃٖ فَاِنَّ عَلٰی رَاسِ مِایٔۃِ سَنَۃِ مَّنھَا لَا یَبقٰی مِمَّن ھُوَعَلٰی ظَھرِ الاَرضِ اَحَدُ

Do you see this night of yours? And after a hundred years from this night, not one of those present over the land will be alive!

After having narrated this report, Sayyidna Ibn ` Umare ؓ said, 'people say different things about it. But, what the Holy Prophet ﷺ meant to say was that this age will be over after hundred years.'

This narrative has been reported in Sahih Muslim also from Sayyidna Jabir ibn ` Abdullah, almost in the same words. But, after having quoted this report, Allamah al-Qurtubi said, 'it offers no conclusive argument for those who hold that the notion of al-Khadir (علیہ السلام) being alive is false because, in this narrative, the words used for the entire progeny of Sayyidna Adam (علیہ السلام) are general with a strong emphasis on the generality. Yet, it contains no decisive authority (nass) to prove that this generality covers the entire progeny of Sayyidna Adam (علیہ السلام) necessarily. The reason is that Sayyidna ` Isa (علیہ السلام) too is among the progeny of Sayyidna Adam (علیہ السلام) who has not died, nor was he killed. Therefore, as obvious, the letters: الف لام (alif-lam) in the words: عَلٰی الاَرضِ ('ala al-ard: over the land) is the alif-lam of 'ahd,' (which points out to something familiar to the addressees), and means the land of Arabia. It does not include the whole land mass of the world out of which the Arabs had never heard even the names of the land of Gog and Magog (Ya'juj and Ma'juj), the far East and the Islands of the West.' This was the view of ` Allamah al-Qurtubi.

Similarly, some people have taken the issue of the Finality of Prophethood as contrary to the notion of al-Khadir (علیہ السلام) being alive. The answer to this is also clear. It can be said that the way the 'life' of Sayyidna ` Isa (علیہ السلام) is not contrary to the Finality of Prophethood, the 'life' of al-Khadir can also be quite similar.

Some people have raised a doubt about the 'life' of al-Khadir` (علیہ السلام) . They say, if he were present during the blessed period of the Holy Prophet ﷺ ، it would have been mandatory for him to come to him and to serve the cause of Islam under him. Because, it was said in Hadith: لَو کَانَ مُوسٰی حَیَّاً لَّمَا وَسِعَہ، اِلَّا اِتِّبَاعِی "Had Musa been alive [ today ], he would have had no choice but to follow me [ for my coming has resulted in the abrogation of the Faith of Musa But, not far out is the possibility that the 'life' and prophethood of al-Khadir 'still may be different from that of the usual Shari` ah-bearing prophets. Since he is charged with the duty of carrying out certain affairs of creation (takwin) entrusted with him by Allah Ta` ala, He takes care of this appointed duty staying aloof from people at large. As for following the Shari’ ah of the Last Prophet ﷺ ، it is not a far out proposition that he may have started acting in accordance with it after the advent of the prophethood of Sayyidna Muhammad al-Mustafa ﷺ . (Allah knows best).

In Tafsir al-Bahr al-Muhit, Abu Hasan has reported events of several pious elders having met al-Khadir (علیہ السلام) but, along with it, he has also said:

وَالجُمھُورُ عَلٰی اَنَّہ ، مَاتَ

As for the majority of religious scholars, they hold the position that al-Khadir (علیہ السلام) has died. (al-Bahr al-Muhit, p. 147, vol.6)

In Tafsir Mazhari, Qadi Thana'ullah of Panipati has said, 'the resolution of all these difficulties lies in what Sayyid Ahmad al-Sarhandi, known as the reviver of the second Islamic millennium, said on the basis of his mukashafah (discovery through induced illumination). His words are: 'I personally asked al-Khadir (علیہ السلام) about this matter in a state of kashf. He said', "I and Ilyas (علیہ السلام) are both not alive. But, Allah Ta’ ala has granted us the ability to appear in the guise of living men and help people in different ways." (Allah, the Pure, the Exalted, knows best)

Conclusion

I have said earlier that none of our articles of faith or problems of religious practice is connected with the death or life of al-Khadir (علیہ السلام) . Therefore, no clarification or explanation was given in the Qur’ an and Sunnah about it. So, there is just no need to enter into unnecessary discussion or debate in it, nor have we been obligated to believe in any one of the sides of the issue. But, as this problem has found currency on a wider level, details have been provided..
