يخبر تعالى، عن عداوة إبليس لآدم وذريته، وأن الله أمر الملائكة بالسجود لآدم، إكراما وتعظيما، وامتثالا لأمر الله، فامتثلوا ذلك { إِلَّا إِبْلِيسَ كَانَ مِنَ الْجِنِّ فَفَسَقَ عَنْ أَمْرِ رَبِّهِ } وقال: { أَأَسْجُدُ لِمَنْ خَلَقْتَ طِينًا } وقال: { أَنَا خَيْرٌ مِنْهُ } فتبين بهذا عداوته لله ولأبيكم ولكم، فكيف تتخذونه وذريته أي: الشياطين { أَوْلِيَاءَ مِنْ دُونِي وَهُمْ لَكُمْ عَدُوٌّ بِئْسَ لِلظَّالِمِينَ بَدَلًا } أي: بئس ما اختاروا لأنفسهم من ولاية الشيطان، الذي لا يأمرهم إلا بالفحشاء والمنكر عن ولاية الرحمن، الذي كل السعادة والفلاح والسرور في ولايته. وفي هذه الآية، الحث على اتخاذ الشيطان عدوا، والإغراء بذلك، وذكر السبب الموجب لذلك، وأنه لا يفعل ذلك إلا ظالم، وأي: ظلم أعظم من ظلم من اتخذ عدوه الحقيقي وليا، وترك الولي الحميد؟\". قال تعالى: { اللَّهُ وَلِيُّ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا يُخْرِجُهُمْ مِنَ الظُّلُمَاتِ إِلَى النُّورِ وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا أَوْلِيَاؤُهُمُ الطَّاغُوتُ يُخْرِجُونَهُمْ مِنَ النُّورِ إِلَى الظُّلُمَاتِ } وقال تعالى: { إِنَّهُمُ اتَّخَذُوا الشَّيَاطِينَ أَوْلِيَاءَ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ }

يقول تعالى منبها بني آدم على عداوة إبليس لهم ولأبيهم من قبلهم ومقرعًا لمن اتبعه منهم وخالف خالقه ومولاه وهو الذى أنشأه وابتدأه وبألطافه رزقه وغذاه ثم بعد هذا كله والى إبليس وعادى الله فقال تعالى " وإذ قلنا للملائكة " أي لجميع الملائكة كما تقدم تقريره في أول سورة البقرة " اسجدوا لآدم " أي سجود تشريف وتكريم وتعظيم كما قال تعالى " وإذ قال ربك للملائكة إني خالق بشرًا من صلصال من حمإ مسنون فإذا سويته ونفخت فيه من روحي فقعوا له ساجدين " وقوله " فسجدوا إلا إبليس كان من الجن " أي خانه أصله فإنه خلق من مارج من نار وأصل خلق الملائكة من نور كما ثبت في صحيح مسلم عن عائشة رضي الله عنها عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم أنه قال " خلقت الملائكة من نور وخلق إبليس من مارج من نار وخلق آدم مما وصف لكم فعند الحاجة نضح كل وعاء بما فيه وخانه الطبع عند الحاجة وذلك أنه كان قد توسم بأفعال الملائكة وتشبه بهم وتعبد وتنسك فلهذا دخل في خطابهم وعصى بالمخالفة "ونبه تعالى ههنا على أنه من الجن أي على أنه خلق من نار كما قال " أنا خير منه خلقتني من نار وخلقته من طين " قال الحسن البصري: ما كان إبليس من الملائكة طرفة عين قط وإنه لأصل الجن كما أن آدم عليه السلام أصل البشر رواه ابن جرير بإسناد صحيح عنه وقال الضحاك عن ابن عباس: كان إبليس من حي من أحياء الملائكة يقال لهم الجن خلقوا من نار السموم من بين الملائكة وكان اسمه الحارث وكان خازنًا من خزان الجنة وخلقت الملائكة من نور غير هذا الحي قال: وخلقت الجن الذين ذكروا في القرآن من مارج من نار وهو لسان النار الذي يكون في طرفها إذا التهبت وقال الضحاك أيضًا عن ابن عباس: كان إبليس من أشرف الملائكة وأكرمهم قبيلة وكان خازنًا على الجنان وكان له سلطان السماء الدنيا وسلطان الأرض وكان مما سولت له نفسه من قضاء الله أنه رأى أن له بذلك شرفًا على أهل السماء فوقع من ذلك في قلبه كبر لا يعلمه إلا الله واستخرج الله ذلك الكبر منه حين أمره بالسجود لآدم " فاستكبر وكان من الكافرين " قال ابن عباس قوله " كان من الجن " أي من خزان الجنان كما يقال للرجل مكي ومدني وبصري وكوفي وقال ابن جريج عن ابن عباس نحو ذلك وقال سعيد بن جبير عن ابن عباس قال: هو من خزان الجنة وكان يدبر أمر السماء الدنيا رواه ابن جرير من حديث الأعمش عن حبيب بن أبي ثابت عن سعيد به وقال سعيد بن المسيب كان رئيس ملائكة سماء الدنيا وقال ابن إسحاق عن خلاد بن عطاء عن طاوس عن ابن عباس قال: كان إبليس قبل أن يركب المعصية من الملائكة اسمه عزازيل وكان من سكان الأرض وكان من أشد الملائكة اجتهادًا وأكثرهم علمًا فذلك دعاه إلى الكبر وكان من حي يسمون جنا.وقال ابن جريج عن صالح مولى التوأمة وشريك بن أبي نمر أحدهما أو كلاهما عن ابن عباس قال: إن من الملائكة قبيلة من الجن وكان إبليس منها وكان يسوس ما بين السماء والأرض فعصى فسخط الله عليه فمسخه شيطانًا رجيمًا لعنه الله ممسوخًا قال: وإذا كانت خطيئة الرجل في كبر فلا ترجه وإذا كانت في معصية فارجه وعن سعيد بن جبير أنه قال: كان من الجنانين الذين يعملون في الجنة وقد رُوي في هذا آثار كثيرة عن السلف وغالبها من الإسرائيليات التي تنقل لينظر فيها والله أعلم بحال كثير منها ومنها ما قد يقطع بكذبه لمخالفته الحق الذي بأيدينا وفي القرآن غنية عن كل ما عداه من الأخبار المتقدمة لأنها لا تكاد تخلو من تبديل وزيادة ونقصان وقد وضع فيها أشياء كثيرة وليس لهم من الحفاظ المتقنين الذين ينفون عنها تحريف الغالين وانتحال المبطلين كما لهذه الأمة من الأئمة والعلماء والسادة والأتقياء والبررة والنجباء من الجهابذة النقاد والحفاظ الجياد الذين دوَّنوا الحديث وحرروه وبينوا صحيحه من حسنه من ضعيفه من منكره وموضوعه ومتروكه ومكذوبه وعرفوا الوضاعين والكذابين والمجهولين وغير ذلك من أصناف الرجال كل ذلك صيانة للجناب النبوي والمقام المحمدي خاتم الرسل وسيد البشر صلى الله عليه وسلم أن ينسب إليه كذب أو يُحَدَّثُ عنه بما ليس منه فرضي الله عنهم وأرضاهم وجعل جنات الفردوس مأواهم وقد فعل وقوله " ففسق عن أمر ربه " أي فخرج عن طاعة الله فإن الفسق هو الخروج يقال فسقت الرطبة إذا خرجت من أكمامها وفسقت الفأرة من جحرها إذا خرجت منه للعيث والفساد ثم قال تعالى مقرعًا وموبخًا لمن اتبعه وأطاعه " أفتتخذونه وذريته أولياء من دوني " الآية أي بدلا عني ولهذا قال " بئس للظالمين " بدلا وهذا المقام كقوله بعد ذكر القيامة وأهوالها ومصير كل من الفريقين السعداء والأشقياء في سورة يس " وامتازوا اليوم أيها المجرمون - إلى قوله - أفلم تكونوا تعقلون ".

The Story of Adam and Iblis

Allah points out to the Children of Adam the enmity of Iblis towards them and their father before them, and rebukes those who follow him and go against their Creator and Master. It is He who created them from nothing and sustains and nourishes them by His kindness, yet they still took Iblis as their friend and declared their enmity towards Allah. So Allah says:

وَإِذْ قُلْنَا لِلْمَلَـئِكَةِ

(And (remember) when We said to the angels), meaning all the angels, as was mentioned in the beginning of Surat Al-Baqarah.

اسْجُدُواْ لاًّدَمَ

(Prostrate yourselves unto Adam) a prostration of respect and honour, as Allah says:

وَإِذْ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلْمَلَـئِكَةِ إِنِّى خَـلِقٌ بَشَرًا مِّن صَلْصَـلٍ مِّنْ حَمَإٍ مَّسْنُونٍ - فَإِذَا سَوَّيْتُهُ وَنَفَخْتُ فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِى فَقَعُواْ لَهُ سَـجِدِينَ

(And (remember) when your Lord said to the angels, "I am going to create a human (Adam) from dried (sounding) clay of altered mud. So, when I have fashioned him completely and breathed into him the soul which I created for him, then fall (you) down prostrating yourselves unto him.) 15:28-29

فَسَجَدُواْ إِلاَّ إِبْلِيسَ كَانَ مِنَ الْجِنِّ

(So they prostrated themselves except Iblis. He was one of the Jinn;) meaning, his original nature betrayed him. He had been created from smokeless fire, whereas the angels had been created from light, as is stated in Sahih Muslim where it is reported that `A'ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

«خُلِقَتِ الْمَلَائِكَةُ مِنْ نُورٍ، وَخُلِقَ إِبْلِيسُ مِنْ مَارِجٍ مِنْ نَارٍ، وَخُلِقَ آدَمُ مِمَّا وُصِفَ لَكُم»

(The angels were created from light, Iblis was created from smokeless fire, and Adam was created from that which has been described to you.) When matters are crucial, every vessel leaks that which it contains and is betrayed by its true nature. Iblis used to do what the angels did and resembled them in their devotion and worship, so he was included when they were addressed, but he disobeyed and went against what he was told to do. So Allah points out here that he was one of the Jinn, i.e., he was created from fire, as He says elsewhere:

أَنَاْ خَيْرٌ مِّنْهُ خَلَقْتَنِي مِن نَّارٍ وَخَلَقْتَهُ مِن طِينٍ

(I am better than he. You created me from fire, and You created him from clay.)38:76 Al-Hasan Al-Basri said, "Iblis was not one of the angels, not even for a second. He was the origin of the Jinn just as Adam, upon him be peace, was the origin of mankind." This was narrated by Ibn Jarir with a Sahih chain.

فَفَسَقَ عَنْ أَمْرِ رَبِّهِ

(he disobeyed the command of his Lord. ) meaning by stepping beyond the bounds of obedience to Allah. Fisq (disobeying) implies going out or stepping beyond. When the date emerges from its flower, the verb used in Arabic is Fasaqat; the same verb is used to describe a mouse coming out of its hole when it comes out to do damage. Then Allah says, rebuking those who follow and obey Iblis:

أَفَتَتَّخِذُونَهُ وَذُرِّيَّتَهُ أَوْلِيَآءَ مِن دُونِى

(Will you then take him and his offspring as protectors and helpers rather than Me) meaning, instead of Me. This is why Allah says:

بِئْسَ لِلظَّـلِمِينَ بَدَلاً

(What an evil is the exchange for the wrongdoers.) This is like the Ayah in Surah Ya Sin where, after mentioning the Resurrection and its terrors, and the ultimate end of the blessed and the doomed, Allah then says:

وَامْتَازُواْ الْيَوْمَ أَيُّهَا الْمُجْرِمُونَ

((It will be said): "And O you the criminals! Get you apart this Day (from the believers).) until;

أَفَلَمْ تَكُونُواْ تَعْقِلُونَ

(Did you not then understand) 36:59-62

And when idh is dependent because it is governed by an implicit udhkur ‘mention when’ We said to the angels ‘Prostrate before Adam’ a prostration involving a bow not placing one’s forehead down to the ground as a greeting to him; and so they prostrated all except Iblīs. He was one of the jinn — some say that these creatures are a species of angels in which case the exceptive clause illā Iblīs ‘except Iblīs’ is a continuous one; but it is also said to be discontinuous since Iblīs is considered the progenitor of all the jinn having offspring who are mentioned alongside him further below; angels on the other hand do not have offspring; and he transgressed against his Lord’s command that is to say he rebelled against obedience to Him by refraining from performing the prostration. Will you then take him and his offspring — this address is to Adam and his progeny the final pronominal suffix hā’ in both words refers to Iblīs for your patrons instead of Me obeying them when they are an enemy to you? in other words when they are your enemies wa-hum lakum ‘aduwwun is a circumstantial qualifier. How evil for the evildoers is that substitute! of Iblīs and his offspring in obeying them instead of obeying God.

Commentary

The progeny of Iblis, and his descendants and followers

The word: ذُرِّ‌يَّتَهُ (dhurriyyatah) in verse 50 indicates that Iblis (Shaitan) has offspring, and a host of descendants and followers. Some commentators have said that 'progeny' at this place means 'accomplices.' That the Shaitan has offspring from his loins is not necessary. But, there is a Sahih Hadith which Humaidi has reported in Kitab al-Jam' bain al-Sahihain on the authority of Sayyidna Salman al-Farisi ؓ . According to his narration, the Holy Prophet ﷺ told him, "do not become like those who are the first to enter the bazaar (shopping centre), or those who are the last to leave it, for the bazaar is a place where the Shaitan has his eggs and offspring laid around." This would indicate that the progeny of Shaitan spreads out in that manner - through what is laid and hatched by him. After having presented this report, al-Qurtubi has said that the Shaitan has accomplices and armies is something established by conclusive proofs - and as for the Shaitan having offspring, a Sahih Hadith has appeared above.
