18:28 Al-Kahf (The Cave)

يأمر تعالى نبيه محمدا صلى الله عليه وسلم، وغيره أسوته، في الأوامر والنواهي -أن يصبر نفسه مع المؤمنين العباد المنيبين { الَّذِينَ يَدْعُونَ رَبَّهُمْ بِالْغَدَاةِ وَالْعَشِيِّ } أي: أول النهار وآخره يريدون بذلك وجه الله، فوصفهم بالعبادة والإخلاص فيها، ففيها الأمر بصحبة الأخيار، ومجاهدة النفس على صحبتهم، ومخالطتهم وإن كانوا فقراء فإن في صحبتهم من الفوائد، ما لا يحصى. { وَلَا تَعْدُ عَيْنَاكَ عَنْهُمْ } أي: لا تجاوزهم بصرك، وترفع عنهم نظرك. { تُرِيدُ زِينَةَ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا } فإن هذا ضار غير نافع، وقاطع عن المصالح الدينية، فإن ذلك يوجب تعلق القلب بالدنيا، فتصير الأفكار والهواجس فيها، وتزول من القلب الرغبة في الآخرة، فإن زينة الدنيا تروق للناظر، وتسحر العقل، فيغفل القلب عن ذكر الله، ويقبل على اللذات والشهوات، فيضيع وقته، وينفرط أمره، فيخسر الخسارة الأبدية، والندامة السرمدية، ولهذا قال: { وَلَا تُطِعْ مَنْ أَغْفَلْنَا قَلْبَهُ عَنْ ذِكْرِنَا } غفل عن الله، فعاقبه بأن أغفله عن ذكره. { وَاتَّبَعَ هَوَاهُ } أي: صار تبعا لهواه، حيث ما اشتهت نفسه فعله، وسعى في إدراكه، ولو كان فيه هلاكه وخسرانه، فهو قد اتخذ إلهه هواه، كما قال تعالى: { أفرأيت من اتخذ إلهه هواه وأضله الله على علم } الآية. { وَكَانَ أَمْرُهُ } أي: مصالح دينه ودنياه { فُرُطًا } أي: ضائعة معطلة. فهذا قد نهى الله عن طاعته، لأن طاعته تدعو إلى الاقتداء به، ولأنه لا يدعو إلا لما هو متصف به، ودلت الآية، على أن الذي ينبغي أن يطاع، ويكون إماما للناس، من امتلأ قلبه بمحبة الله، وفاض ذلك على لسانه، فلهج بذكر الله، واتبع مراضي ربه، فقدمها على هواه، فحفظ بذلك ما حفظ من وقته، وصلحت أحواله، واستقامت أفعاله، ودعا الناس إلى ما من الله به عليه، فحقيق بذلك، أن يتبع ويجعل إماما، والصبر المذكور في هذه الآية، هو الصبر على طاعة الله، الذي هو أعلى أنواع الصبر، وبتمامه تتم باقي الأقسام. وفي الآية، استحباب الذكر والدعاء والعبادة طرفي النهار، لأن الله مدحهم بفعله، وكل فعل مدح الله فاعله، دل ذلك على أن الله يحبه، وإذا كان يحبه فإنه يأمر به، ويرغب فيه.

وقوله " واصبر نفسك مع الذين يدعون ربهم بالغداة والعشي يريدون وجهه " أي اجلس مع الذين يذكرون الله ويهللونه ويحمدونه ويسبحونه ويكبرونه ويسألونه بكرة وعشيًا من عباد الله سواء كانوا فقراء أو أغنياء أو أقوياء أو ضعفاء يقال إنها نزلت في أشراف قريش حين طلبوا من النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم أن يجلس معهم وحده ولا يجالسهم بضعفاء أصحابه كبلال وعمار وصهيب وخباب وابن مسعود وليفرد أولئك بمجلس على حدة فنهاه الله عن ذلك فقال " ولا تطرد الذين يدعون ربهم بالغداة والعشي " الآية وأمره أن يصبر نفسه في الجلوس مع هؤلاء فقال " واصبر نفسك مع الذين يدعون ربهم بالغداة والعشي " الآية وقال مسلم في صحيحه: حدثنا أبو بكر بن أبي شيبة حدثنا محمد بن عبد الله الأسدي عن إسرائيل عن المقدام بن شريح عن أبيه عن سعد هو ابن أبي وقاص قال: كنا مع النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم ستة نفر فقال المشركون للنبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: اطرد هؤلاء لا يجترئون علينا قال: وكنت أنا وابن مسعود ورجل من هذيل وبلال ورجلان نسيت اسميهما فوقع في نفس رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ما شاء الله أن يقع فحدث نفسه فأنزل الله عز وجل "ولا تطرد الذين يدعون ربهم بالغداة والعشي يريدون وجهه" انفرد بإخراجه مسلم دون البخاري وقال الإمام أحمد: حدثنا محمد بن جعفر حدثنا شعبة عن أبي التياح قال سمعت أبا الجعد يحدث عن أبي أمامة قال: خرج رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم على قاص يقص فأمسك فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قص فلإن أقعد غدوة إلى أن تشرق الشمس أحب إلي من أن أعتق أربع رقاب "وقال أحمد أيضًا: حدثنا هاشم ثنا شعبة عن عبد الملك بن ميسرة قال سمعت كردوس بن قيس وكان قاص العامة بالكوفة يقول: أخبرني رجل من أصحاب بدر أنه سمع النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول " لإن أقعد في مثل هذا المجلس أحب إلي من أن أعتق أربع رقاب "قال شعبة فقلت أي مجلس قال كان قاصًا وقال أبو داود الطيالسي في مسنده: حدثنا محمد حدثنا يزيد بن أبان عن أنس قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم " لإن أجالس قومًا يذكرون الله من صلاة الغداة إلى طلوع الشمس أحب إلي مما طلعت عليه الشمس ولأن أذكر الله من صلاة العصر إلى غروب الشمس أحب إلي من أن أعتق ثمانيةمن ولد إسماعيل دية كل واحد منهم اثنا عشر ألفًا "فحسبنا دياتهم ونحن في مجلس أنس فبلغت ستة وتسعين ألفًا وههنا من يقول أربعة من ولد إسماعيل والله ما قال إلاثمانية دية كل واحد منهم اثنا عشر ألفًا وقال الحافظ أبو بكر البزار: حدثنا محمد بن إسحاق الأهوازي حدثنا أبو أحمد الزبيري حدثنا عمرو بن ثابت عن علي بن الأقمر عن الأغر أبي مسلم وهو الكوفي أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم مر برجل يقرأ سورة الكهف فلما رأى النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم سكت فقال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم " هذا المجلس الذي أمرت أن أصبر نفسي معهم "هكذا رواه أبو أحمد عن عمرو بن ثابت عن علي بن الأقمر عن الأغر مرسلا وحدثنا يحيى بن المعلى عن منصور حدثنا محمد بن الصلت حدثنا عمرو بن ثابت عن علي بن الأقمر عن الأغر أبي مسلم عن أبي هريرة وأبي سعيد قالا: جاء رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ورجل يقرأ سورة الحج أو سورة الكهف فسكت فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم هذا المجلس الذي أمرت أن أصبر نفسي معهم وقال الإمام أحمد ثنا محمد بن بكير ثنا ميمون المرئي ثنا ميمون بن سياه عن أنس ابن مالك رضي الله عنه عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال " مامن قوم اجتمعوا يذكرون الله لا يريدون بذلك إلا وجهه إلا ناداهم مناد من السماء أن قوموا مغفورًا لكم قد بدلت سيئاتكم حسنات "تفرد به أحمد رحمه الله وقال الطبراني ثنا إسماعيل بن الحسن ثنا أحمد بن صالح ثنا ابن وهب عن أسامة بن زيد عن أبي حازم عن عبد الرحمن بن سهل ابن حنيف قال: نزلت على رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وهو في بعض أبياته " واصبر نفسك مع الذين يدعون ربهم بالغداة والعشي " الآية فخرج يلتمسهم فوجد قومًا يذكرون الله تعالى منهم ثائر الرأس وجاف الجلد وذو الثوب الواحد فلما رآهم جلس معهم وقال " الحمد لله الذي جعل في أمتي من أمرني أن أصبر نفسي معهم "عبد الرحمن هذا ذكره أبو بكر بن أبي داود في الصحابة وأما أبوه فمن سادات الصحابة رضي الله عنهم وقوله " ولا تعد عيناك عنهم تريد زينة الحياة الدنيا " قال ابن عباس: ولا تجاوزهم إلى غيرهم يعني تطلب بدلهم أصحاب الشرف والثروة " ولا تطع من أغفلنا قلبه عن ذكرنا " أي شغل عن الدين وعبادة ربه بالدنيا " وكان أمره فرطًا " أي أعماله وأفعاله سفه وتفريط وضياع ولا تكن مطيعًا له ولا محبًا لطريقته ولا تغبطه بما هو فيه كما قال " ولا تمدّنّ عينيك إلى ما متعنا به أزواجا منهم زهرة الحياة الدنيا لنفتنهم فيه ورزق ربك خير وأبقى ".

The Command to recite the Qur'an and to patiently keep Company with the Believers

Commanding His Messenger to recite His Holy Book and convey it to mankind, Allah says,

لاَ مُبَدِّلَ لِكَلِمَـتِهِ

(None can change His Words,) meaning, no one can alter them, distort them or misinterpret them.

وَلَن تَجِدَ مِن دُونِهِ مُلْتَحَدًا

(and none will you find as a refuge other than Him.) It was reported that Mujahid said, "A shelter," and that Qatadah said, "A helper or supporter." Ibn Jarir said: "Allah is saying, `if you O Muhammad, do not recite what is revealed to you of the Book of your Lord, then you will have no refuge from Allah."' As Allah says:

يَـأَيُّهَا الرَّسُولُ بَلِّغْ مَآ أُنزِلَ إِلَيْكَ مِن رَّبِّكَ وَإِن لَّمْ تَفْعَلْ فَمَا بَلَّغْتَ رِسَالَتَهُ وَاللَّهُ يَعْصِمُكَ مِنَ النَّاسِ

(O Messenger! Proclaim (the Message) which has been sent down to you from your Lord. And if you do not, then you have not conveyed His Message. Allah will protect you from mankind.)5:67

إِنَّ الَّذِى فَرَضَ عَلَيْكَ الْقُرْءَانَ لَرَآدُّكَ إِلَى مَعَادٍ

(Verily, He Who has given you the Qur'an, will surely bring you back to the place of return.) 28:85 meaning, `He will call you to account for the duty of conveying the Message which He entrusted you with. '

وَاصْبِرْ نَفْسَكَ مَعَ الَّذِينَ يَدْعُونَ رَبَّهُم بِالْغَدَاةِ وَالْعَشِىِّ يُرِيدُونَ وَجْهَهُ

(And keep yourself patiently with those who call on their Lord morning and afternoon, seeking His Face;) meaning, sit with those who remember Allah, who say "La Ilaha Illallah", who praise Him, glorify Him, declare His greatness and call on Him, morning and evening, all the servants of Allah, whether rich or poor, strong or weak. It was said that this was revealed about the nobles of Quraysh when they asked the Prophet to sit with them on his own, and not to bring his weak Companions with him, such as Bilal, `Ammar, Suhayb, Khabbab and Ibn Mas`ud. They wanted him to sit with them on his own, but Allah forbade him from doing that, and said,

وَلاَ تَطْرُدِ الَّذِينَ يَدْعُونَ رَبَّهُمْ بِالْغَدَاةِ وَالْعَشِىِّ

(And turn not away those who invoke their Lord, morning and afternoon.) Allah commanded him to patiently content himself with sitting with those people (the weak believers), and said:

وَاصْبِرْ نَفْسَكَ مَعَ الَّذِينَ يَدْعُونَ رَبَّهُم بِالْغَدَاةِ وَالْعَشِىِّ

(And keep yourself patiently with those who call on their Lord morning and afternoon...) Imam Muslim recorded in his Sahih that Sa`d bin Abi Waqqas who said: "There was a group of six of us with the Prophet . The idolators said, `Tell these people to leave so they will not offend us.' There was myself, Ibn Mas`ud, a man from Hudayl, Bilal and two other men whose names I have forgotten. Allah's Messenger ﷺ thought to himself about whatever Allah willed he should think about, then Allah revealed:

وَلاَ تَطْرُدِ الَّذِينَ يَدْعُونَ رَبَّهُمْ بِالْغَدَاةِ وَالْعَشِىِّ يُرِيدُونَ وَجْهَهُ

(And turn not away those who invoke their Lord, morning and afternoon.) Only Muslim reported this; excluding Al-Bukhari.

وَلاَ تَعْدُ عَيْنَاكَ عَنْهُمْ تُرِيدُ زِينَةَ الْحَيَوةِ الدُّنْيَا

(and let not your eyes overlook them, desiring the pomp and glitter of the life of the world;) Ibn `Abbas said, `(this means) do not favor others over them, meaning do not seek the people of nobility and wealth instead of them.'

وَلاَ تُطِعْ مَنْ أَغْفَلْنَا قَلْبَهُ عَن ذِكْرِنَا

(and obey not him whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance) means, those who are distracted by this world from being committed to the religion and from worshipping their Lord.

وَكَانَ أَمْرُهُ فُرُطًا

(and whose affair (deeds) has been lost.) means, his actions and deeds are a foolish waste of time. Do not obey him or admire his way or envy what he has. As Allah says elsewhere:

وَلاَ تَمُدَّنَّ عَيْنَيْكَ إِلَى مَا مَتَّعْنَا بِهِ أَزْوَجاً مِّنْهُمْ زَهْرَةَ الْحَيَوةِ الدُّنْيَا لِنَفْتِنَهُمْ فِيهِ وَرِزْقُ رَبِّكَ خَيْرٌ وَأَبْقَى

(And strain not your eyes in longing for the things We have given for enjoyment to various groups of them, the splendor of the life of this world, that We may test them thereby. But the provision of your Lord is better and more lasting.) 20:131

And restrain yourself detain yourself along with those who call upon their Lord at morning and evening desiring through their worship His Countenance exalted be He and not any of the transient things of this world — and these are the poor; and do not let your eyes overlook turn away from them — these the eyes are being used to refer to the person addressed — desiring the glitter of the life of this world. And do not obey him whose heart We have made oblivious to Our remembrance that is to the Qur’ān — this was ‘Uyayna b. Hisn and his companions — and who follows his own whim by attributing partners to God and whose conduct is mere prodigality excess.

Commentary

Da'wah and Tabligh admit of no discrimination

Some events have been mentioned in the background of the revelation of the verse: وَاصْبِرْ‌ نَفْسَكَ (And keep yourself content - 28). It is possible that all of them became the cause of this instruction. Al-Baghawi reports that ` Uyainah ibn Hisn al-Fazari, the chief of Makkah paid a visit to the Holy Prophet ﷺ . Sitting there with him was Sayyidna Salman al-Farisi ؓ who was one of the poor Sahabah. His dress was tattered and his looks, that of a derwish. Then, there were some other poor and humble people like him sitting within the gathering. ` Uyainah said, 'these are the people who stop us from coming to you and listening to you. We cannot sit with such broken-down people. You should remove them from your gathering, or you should, at the least, have one separate gathering for us and another, for them.'

Ibn Marduwayh reports on the authority of Sayyidna ` Abdullah ibn ` Abbas ؓ that Umaiyyah ibn Khalaf al-jumahi advised the Holy Prophet ﷺ that he should not have poor and broken-down Muslims as those close to him. Instead of that, he should prefer to have the chiefs of Makkah and the Quraysh tribe with him. If these people embraced the religion brought by him, it will advance the cause of religion.

Pursuant to events of this nature, came the Divine instruction that firmly stopped him from accepting their advice. Not only that he should not remove them from his company, in fact, the command given reads: وَاصْبِرْ‌ نَفْسَكَ (wasbir nafsak: translated as 'and keep yourself content' ). If translated literally, it could mean 'keep yourself tied with them,' not in the sense of not leaving them anytime, but meaning that he should attend to and relate to these very people, seeking their advice in essential matters and working in association with them alone. Why should he do that and what was the wisdom behind it? The words that follow spell the reason out. They call their Lord morning and evening, remembering Him under all conditions. And what they do is exclusively for the good pleasure of Allah. All these conditions around them are conditions that at-tract the help and support of Allah Ta` ala. And such are the people to whom comes the help of Allah. So, let them not worry about the loss of worldly support for the final victory shall be theirs.

The reason why he was prevented from accepting the advice of the Quraysh chiefs has been given towards the end of the verse. It was said that their hearts were heedless of the remembrance of Allah, everything they did was subservient to their physical desires and these conditions guaranteed that they would stand alienated far from the mercy and support of Allah Ta` ala.

(Restrain thyself along with those who cry unto their Lord�) [18:28]. The judge Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn al-Hasan al-Hiri related to us by dictation in Dar al-Sunnah on Friday after prayer, in the months of the year 410 a.h.> Abu'l-Hasan ibn 'Isa Ibn 'Abdawayh al-Hiri> Muhammad ibn Ibrahim al-Bushanji> al-Walid ibn 'Abd al-Malik ibn Musarrih al-Harrani> Sulayman ibn 'Ata' al-Harrani> Maslamah ibn 'Abd Allah al-Juhani> his uncle Ibn Mashja'ah ibn Rub'i al-Juhani> Salman al-Farisi who said: �Those whose hearts were to be reconciled (al-mu'allafati qulubuhum) - 'Uyaynah ibn Hisn, al-Aqra' ibn Habis and their families - came to the Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, if only you could sit at the front of the assembly and remove these people - meaning: Salman al-Farisi, Abu Dharr al-Ghifari and other poor Muslims - and their smelly outer garments - because the only thing they had on them were these woollen outer garments - from us, then we could sit with you, talk to you and learn from you!' As a response, Allah, exalted is He, revealed (And recite that which hath been revealed unto thee of the Scripture of thy Lord. There is none who can change His words, and thou wilt find no refuge beside Him. Restrain thyself along with those who cry unto their Lord at morn and evening, seeking His Countenance) [18:27-28] up to His words (Lo! We have prepared for disbelievers Fire...) [18:29], threatening them with hell. The Prophet, Allah bless him and give him peace, stood up and went looking for them. He found them at the back of the mosque making remembrance of Allah, exalted is He. He said: 'Praise be to Allah Who did not take away my soul until He commanded me to restrain myself with men of my community. It is with you that I live and with you that I die' �. (�and obey not him whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance�) [18:28]. Abu Bakr al-Harithi informed us> Abu'l-Shaykh al-Hafiz> Abu Yahya al-Razi> Sahl ibn 'Uthman> Abu Malik> Juwaybir> al-Dahhak> Ibn 'Abbas who said regarding the words of Allah, exalted is He (�and obey not him whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance�): �This verse was revealed about Umayyah ibn Khalaf al-Jumahi. He asked the Prophet, Allah bless him and give him peace, to do something that he disliked. He asked him to chase away the poor from his assembly and draw to him, instead, the leaders of Mecca. Allah, exalted is He, revealed (�and obey not him whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance), i.e. sealed his heart such that he will never believe in Allah's divine oneness (who followeth his own lust) i.e. idolatry�.
