ثم أخبر أيضا أن الذين يعبدونهم من دون الله في شغل شاغل عنهم باهتمامهم بالافتقار إلى الله وابتغاء الوسيلة إليه فقال: { أُولَئِكَ الَّذِينَ يَدْعُونَ } من الأنبياء والصالحين والملائكة { يَبْتَغُونَ إِلَى رَبِّهِمُ الْوَسِيلَةَ أَيُّهُمْ أَقْرَبُ } أي: يتنافسون في القرب من ربهم ويبذلون ما يقدرون عليه من الأعمال الصالحة المقربة إلى الله تعالى وإلى رحمته، ويخافون عذابه فيجتنبون كل ما يوصل إلى العذاب. { إِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّكَ كَانَ مَحْذُورًا } أي: هو الذي ينبغي شدة الحذر منه والتوقي من أسبابه. وهذه الأمور الثلاثة الخوف والرجاء والمحبة التي وصف الله بها هؤلاء المقربين عنده هي الأصل والمادة في كل خير. فمن تمت له تمت له أموره وإذا خلا القلب منها ترحلت عنه الخيرات وأحاطت به الشرور. وعلامة المحبة ما ذكره الله أن يجتهد العبد في كل عمل يقربه إلى الله وينافس في قربه بإخلاص الأعمال كلها لله والنصح فيها وإيقاعها على أكمل الوجوه المقدور عليها، فمن زعم أنه يحب الله بغير ذلك فهو كاذب.

وقوله تعالى "أولئك الذين يدعون" الآية روى البخاري من حديث سليمان بن مهران الأعمش عن إبراهيم عن أبي معمر عن عبدالله في قوله "أولئك الذين يدعون يبتغون إلى ربهم الوسيلة" قال ناس من الجن كانوا يعبدون فأسلموا وفي رواية قال كان ناس من الإنس يعبدون ناسا من الجن فأسلم الجن وتمسك هؤلاء بدينهم وقال قتادة عن معبد بن عبدالله الرماني عن عبدالله بن عتبة بن مسعود عن ابن مسعود في قوله "أولئك الذين يدعون" الآية قال نزلت في نفر من العرب كانوا يعبدون نفرا من الجن فأسلم الجنيون والإنس الذين كانوا يعبدونهم لا يشعرون بإسلامهم فنزلت هذه الآية وفي رواية عن ابن مسعود كانوا يعبدون صنفا من الملائكة يقال لهم الجن فذكره وقال السدي عن أبي صالح عن ابن عباس في قوله "أولئك الذين يدعون يبتغون إلى ربهم الوسيلة أيهم أقرب" قال عيسى وأمه وعزير وقال مغيرة عن إبراهيم كان ابن عباس يقول: في هذه الآية هم عيسى وعزير والشمس والقمر وقال مجاهد عيسى والعزير والملائكة واختار ابن جرير قول ابن مسعود لقوله "يبتغون إلى ربهم الوسيلة" وهذا لا يعبر به عن الماضي فلا يدخل فيه عيسى والعزير والملائكة وقال والوسيلة هي القربة كما قال قتادة ولهذا قال "أيهم أقرب" وقوله تعالى "ويرجون رحمته ويخافون عذابه" لا تتم العبادة إلا بالخوف والرجاء فبالخوف ينكف عن المناهي وبالرجاء يكثر من الطاعات وقوله تعالى "إن عذاب ربك كان محذورا" أي ينبغي أن يحذر منه ويخاف من وقوعه وحصوله عياذا بالله منه.

The gods of the Idolators can neither benefit nor harm; rather they themselves seek to draw close to Allah

Allah says:

قُلْ

(Say) O Muhammad to these idolators who worship things other than Allah,

ادْعُواْ الَّذِينَ زَعَمْتُم مِّن دُونِهِ

(Call upon those - besides Him whom you pretend.) such as idols and rivals of Allah. Even if you turn to them,

فَلاَ يَمْلِكُونَ كَشْفَ الضُّرِّ عَنْكُمْ

(They have neither the power to remove the adversity from you) they have no such power at all,

وَلاَ تَحْوِيلاً

(nor even to shift (it from you to another person.)) to lift the distress from you and give it to someone else. The meaning is that the only one Who is able to do that is Allah Alone, with no partner or associate, Who is the One Who creates and issues commands.

قُلِ ادْعُواْ الَّذِينَ زَعَمْتُم

(Say: "Call upon those whom you pretend) Al-`Awfi reported from Ibn `Abbas, "The people of Shirk used to say, `we worship the angels and the Messiah and `Uzayr,' while these (the angels and the Messiah and `Uzayr) themselves call upon Allah."

أُولَـئِكَ الَّذِينَ يَدْعُونَ

(Those whom they call upon, desire) Al-Bukhari recorded from Sulayman bin Mahran Al-A`mash, from Ibrahim, from Abu Ma`mar, from `Abdullah:

أُولَـئِكَ الَّذِينَ يَدْعُونَ يَبْتَغُونَ إِلَى رَبِّهِمُ الْوَسِيلَةَ

(Those whom they call upon, desire a means of access to their Lord,) "Some of the Jinn used to be worshipped, then they became Muslims." According to another report: "Some humans used to worship some of the Jinn, then those Jinn became Muslim, but those humans adhered to their religion (of worshipping the Jinn)."

وَيَرْجُونَ رَحْمَتَهُ وَيَخَـفُونَ عَذَابَهُ

(they hope for His mercy and fear His torment.) Worship cannot be complete or perfect unless it is accompanied by both fear and hope. Fear stops one from doing things that are forbidden, and hope makes one do more good deeds.

إِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّكَ كَانَ مَحْذُورًا

(Verily, the torment of your Lord is (something) to be afraid of!) meaning, one should beware of it and be afraid lest it happen. We seek refuge with Allah from that.

Those whom they call gods they themselves seek a means to their Lord they seek nearness by way of obedience which of them ayyuhum substitutes for the third person indicator wāw of the verb yabtaghūna ‘they seek’ in other words even he seeks it this nearness the one who is nearer to Him so how much more is it sought in the case of others?; and they hope for His mercy and fear His chastisement just like others so how can you call them gods? Truly your Lord’s chastisement is a thing to beware of.

Commentary

The word 'al-wasilah' in: يَبْتَغُونَ إِلَىٰ رَ‌بِّهِمُ الْوَسِيلَةَ (seek the means of close ness to their Lord - 57) conveys the sense of that which is used as a means of reaching someone. As for reaching Allah, the wasilah or means is to always keep the pleasure of Allah in sight when learning or doing anything while adhering to the injunctions of the Shari` ah strictly. Thus, the sense of the sentence is that all of them are seeking the closeness of Allah Ta’ ala through their righteous deeds.

About the sentence which follows immediately after: يَرْ‌جُونَ رَ‌حْمَتَهُ وَيَخَافُونَ عَذَابَهُ (hope for His Mercy and fear His punishment - 57), Sahl ibn ` Abdullah said: Hope and Fear, that is, hoping for mercy from Allah as well as fearing Him are two different states one is in. When they stay at par, one keeps on course, correct and stable. And if any one of the two overcomes the other, one finds the equilibrium of his spiritual state subjected to disorder to the measure of that imbalance. (Qurtubi)
