16:103 An-Nahl (The Bee)

يخبر تعالى عن قيل المشركين المكذبين لرسوله { أَنَّهُمْ يَقُولُونَ إِنَّمَا يُعَلِّمُهُ } هذا الكتاب الذي جاء به { بَشَرٌ } وذلك البشر الذي يشيرون إليه أعجمي اللسان { وَهَذَا } القرآن { لِسَانٌ عَرَبِيٌّ مُبِينٌ } هل هذا القول ممكن؟ أو له حظ من الاحتمال؟ ولكن الكاذب يكذب ولا يفكر فيما يؤول إليه كذبه، فيكون في قوله من التناقض والفساد ما يوجب رده بمجرد تصوره.

يقول تعالى مخبرا عن المشركين ما كانوا يقولونه من الكذب والافتراء والبهت أن محمدا إنما يعلمه هذا الذي يتلوه علينا من القرآن بشر ويشيرون إلى رجل أعجمي كان بين أظهرهم غلام لبعض بطون قريش وكان بياعا يبيع عند الصفا وربما كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يجلس إليه ويكلمه بعض الشيء وذاك كان أعجمي اللسان لا يعرف العربية أو أنه كان يعرف الشيء اليسير بقدر ما يرد جواب الخطاب فيما لا بد منه فلهذا قال الله تعالى رادا عليهم في افترائهم ذلك " لسان الذي يلحدون إليه أعجمي وهذا لسان عربي مبين " أي القرآن أي فكيف يتعلم من جاء بهذا القرآن في فصاحته وبلاغته ومعانيه التامة الشاملة التي هي أكمل من معاني كل كتاب نزل على بني إسرائيل كيف يتعلم من رجل أعجمي؟ لا يقول هذا من له أدنى مسكة من العقل. قال محمد بن إسحاق بن يسار في السيرة: كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فيما بلغني كثيرا ما يجلس عند المروة إلى سبيعة غلام نصراني يقال له جبر عبد لبعض بني الحضرمي فأنزل الله "ولقد نعلم أنهم يقولون إنما يعلمه بشر لسان الذي يلحدون إليه أعجمي وهذا لسان عربي مبين" وكذا قال عبدالله بن كثير وعن عكرمة وقتادة كان اسمه يعيش. وقال ابن جرير حدثني أحمد بن محمد الطوسي حدثنا أبو عامر حدثنا إبراهيم بن طهمان عن مسلم بن عبدالله الملائي عن مجاهد عن ابن عباس قال: كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يعلم قينا بمكة وكان اسمه بلعام وكان أعجمي اللسان وكان المشركون يرون رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يدخل عليه ويخرج من عنده فقالوا إنما يعلمه بلعام فأنزل الله هذه الآية "ولقد نعلم أنهم يقولون إنما يعلمه بشر لسان الذي يلحدون إليه أعجمي وهذا لسان عربي مبين" وقال الضحاك بن مزاحم هو سلمان الفارسي وهذا القول ضعيف لأن هذه الآية مكية وسلمان إنما أسلم بالمدينة وقال عبيد الله بن مسلم كان لنا غلامان روميان يقرآن كتابا لهما بلسانهما فكان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يمر بهما فيقوم فيسمع منهما فقال المشركون يتعلم منهما فأنزل الله هذه الآية وقال الزهري عن سعيد بن المسيب: الذي قال ذلك من المشركين رجل كان يكتب الوحي لرسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فارتد بعد ذلك عن الإسلام وافترى هذه المقالة قبحه الله.

The Idolators' Claim that the Qur'an was taught by a Human, and the Refutation of their Claim

Allah tells us about the idolators' lies, allegations, and slander when they claimed that this Qur'an which Muhammad had recited for them, was actually taught to him by a human. They referred to a foreign (i.e., non-Arab) man who lived among them as the servant of some of the clans of Quraysh and who used to sell goods by As-Safa. Maybe the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to sit with him sometimes and talk to him a little, but he was a foreigner who did not know much Arabic, only enough simple phrases to answer questions when he had to. So in refutation of their claims of fabrication, Allah said:

لِّسَانُ الَّذِى يُلْحِدُونَ إِلَيْهِ أَعْجَمِىٌّ وَهَـذَا لِسَانٌ عَرَبِىٌّ مُّبِينٌ

(The tongue of the man they refer to is foreign, while this (the Qur'an) is a (in) clear Arabic tongue.) meaning, how could it be that this Qur'an with its eloquent style and perfect meanings, which is more perfect than any Book revealed to any previously sent Prophet, have been learnt from a foreigner who hardly speaks the language No one with the slightest amount of common sense would say such a thing.

And verily wa-laqad is for confirmation We know that they say ‘It is only a human that is teaching him the Qur’ān’ — this was a Christian blacksmith whom the Prophet s used to frequent. God exalted be He says The tongue the language of him to whom they refer to whom they incline with the accusation that he is the one teaching him is foreign’; while this Qur’ān is in a clear Arabic tongue one of lucidity and clarity so how can a foreigner be teaching him?

Sequence of Verses

In the previous verse (98), there was an instruction to say اَعُوذ بِاللہ 'a udhu bil-lah' (I seek protection with Allah) while reciting the Qur’ an which indicates that the Shaitan puts scruples in the heart when one recites the Qur'an. In the verses cited above, there is a refutation of such Satanic instigations.

(And We know well that they say: Only a man teacheth him. The speech of him at whom they falsely hint is outlandish�) [16:103]. Abu Nasr Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Muzakki> Abu �Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Hamdan al-Zahid> �Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn �Abd al-�Aziz> Abu Hisham al-Rifa�i> Ibn Fudayl> Husayn> �Abd Allah ibn Muslim who said: �We owned two Christian youths from the people of �Ayn Tamr, one called Yasar and the other Jabr. Their trade was making swords but they also could read the Scriptures in their own tongue. The Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, used to pass by them and listen to their reading. As a result, the idolaters used to say: �He is being taught by them!� To give them the lie, Allah, exalted is He, revealed (The speech of him at whom they falsely hint is outlandish, and this is clear Arabic speech)�.
