11:5 Hud (Hud)

يخبر تعالى عن جهل المشركين، وشدة ضلالهم، أنهم { يَثْنُونَ صُدُورَهُمْ } أي: يميلونها { لِيَسْتَخْفُوا } من الله، فتقع صدورهم حاجبة لعلم الله بأحوالهم، وبصره لهيئاتهم. قال تعالى -مبينا خطأهم في هذا الظن- { أَلَا حِينَ يَسْتَغْشُونَ ثِيَابَهُمْ } أي: يتغطون بها، يعلمهم في تلك الحال، التي هي من أخفى الأشياء. بل { يَعْلَمُ مَا يُسِرُّونَ } من الأقوال والأفعال { وَمَا يُعْلِنُونَ } منها، بل ما هو أبلغ من ذلك، وهو: { إِنَّهُ عَلِيمٌ بِذَاتِ الصُّدُورِ } أي: بما فيها من الإرادات، والوساوس، والأفكار، التي لم ينطقوا بها، سرا ولا جهرا، فكيف تخفى عليه حالكم، إذا ثنيتم صدوركم لتستخفوا منه. ويحتمل أن المعنى في هذا أن الله يذكر إعراض المكذبين للرسول الغافلين عن دعوته، أنهم -من شدة إعراضهم- يثنون صدورهم، أي: يحدودبون حين يرون الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم لئلا يراهم ويسمعهم دعوته، ويعظهم بما ينفعهم، فهل فوق هذا الإعراض شيء؟\" ثم توعدهم بعلمه تعالى بجميع أحوالهم، وأنهم لا يخفون عليه، وسيجازيهم بصنيعهم.

قال ابن عباس كانوا يكرهون أن يستقبلوا السماء بفروجهم وحال وقاعهم فأنزل الله هذه الآية روى البخاري من طريق ابن جريج عن محمد بن عباد بن جعفر أن ابن عباس قرأ ألا إنهم تثنوني صدورهم الآية فقلت يا أبا العباس ما تثنوني صدورهم؟ قال الرجل كان يجامع امرأته فيستحي أو يتخلى فيستحي فنزلت "ألا إنهم تثنوني صدورهم" وفي لفظ آخر له قال ابن عباس أناس كانوا يستحيون أن يتخلوا فيفضوا إلى السماء وأن يجامعوا نساءهم فيفضوا إلى السماء فنزل ذلك فيهم ثم قال: حدثنا الحميدي حدثنا سفيان حدثنا عمرو قال قرأ ابن عباس "ألا إنهم تثنوني صدورهم ليستخفوا منه ألا حين يستغشون ثيابهم" قال البخاري: وقال غيره عن ابن عباس "يستغشون" يغطون رؤوسهم وقال ابن عباس في رواية أخرى في تفسير هذه الآية يعني به الشك في الله وعمل السيئات وكذا روى عن مجاهد والحسن وغيرهم أي أنهم كانوا يثنون صدورهم إذا قالوا شيئا أو عملوه فيظنون أنهم يستخفون من الله بذلك فأخبرهم الله تعالى أنهم حين يستغشون ثيابهم عند منامهم في ظلمة الليل "يعلم ما يسرون" من القول "وما يعلنون إنه عليم بذات الصدور" أي يعلم ما تكن صدورهم من النيات والضمائر والسرائر وما أحسن ما قال زهير بن أبي سلمى في معلقته المشهورة: فلا تكتمن الله ما في قلوبكم ليخفى ومهما يكتم الله يعلم يؤخر فيوضع في كتاب فيدخر ليوم حساب أو يعجل فينقم فقد اعترف هذا الشاعر الجاهلي بوجود الصانع وعلمه بالجزئيات وبالمعاد وبالجزاء وبكتابة الأعمال في الصحف ليوم القيامة وقال عبدالله بن شداد: كان أحدهم إذا مر برسول الله صلي الله عليه وسلم ثنى عنه صدره وغطى رأسه فأنزل الله ذلك وعود الضمير إلى الله أولى لقوله "ألا حين يستغشون ثيابهم يعلم ما يسرون وما يعلنون" وقرأ ابن عباس ألا إنهم تثنوني صدورهم يرفع الصدور على الفاعلية وهو قريب المعنى.

Allah is Aware of All Things

Ibn `Abbas said, "They used to dislike facing the sky with their private parts, particularly during sexual relations. Therefore, Allah revealed this verse." Al-Bukhari recorded by way of Ibn Jurayj, who reported from Muhammad bin `Abbad bin Ja`far who said, "Ibn `Abbas recited, (أَلَا إِنَّهُمْ تَثْنَونِي صُدُورُهُمْ) "Behold their breasts did fold up." So I said: `O Abu Al-`Abbas! What does -their breasts did fold up- mean' He said, `The man used to have sex with his woman, but he would be shy, or he used to have answering the call of nature (in an open space) but, he would be shy. Therefore, this verse,

أَلا إِنَّهُمْ يَثْنُونَ صُدُورَهُمْ

(No doubt! They did fold up their breasts,) was revealed."' In another wording of this narration, Ibn `Abbas said, "There were people who used to be shy to remove their clothes while answering the call of nature in an open space and thus be naked exposed to the sky. They were also ashamed of having sexual relations with their women due to fear of being exposed towards the sky. Thus, this was revealed concerning them." Al-Bukhari reported that Ibn `Abbas said that

يَسْتَغْشُونَ

(they cover themselves) means that they cover their heads.

As reported by al-Bukhārī by way of an isnād from Ibn ‘Abbās the following was revealed regarding those who were embarrassed to withdraw to relieve nature or to have sexual intercourse without their clothes and become exposed to the heaven. It is also said that it was revealed regarding the hypocrites Lo! they fold up their breasts that they may hide from Him that is from God; lo! the moment they cover themselves with their garments wrapping themselves up therewith He God exalted be He knows what they keep hidden and what they proclaim and so their hiding is to no avail. Truly He knows what is in the breasts of men that is what is in the hearts.

The sixth verse carries a refutation of what the hypocrites and the disbelievers do. They try to camouflage their hostility, and their antagonistic activism against the Holy Prophet ﷺ as deftly as they could. Their hearts blaze with malice and enmity but they maintain a cool front, find all sorts of covers to hide their true identity and intention and surmise that no one would find out who they were really and what they were doing actually. But, the truth of the matter is that Allah Ta` ala knows it all, that which they let come out in the open and that which they conceal behind all sorts of clothes, covers and curtains: إِنَّهُ عَلِيمٌ بِذَاتِ الصُّدُورِ‌ because, ` He is All Aware of [ even ] what lies in the hearts.'

(Lo! now they fold up their breasts that they may hide (their thoughts) from Him�) [11:5]. This verse was revealed about al-Akhnas ibn Shurayq who was good looking and sweet talking. When he met the Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, he pleased him but he always kept in his heart that which displeased him. Al-Kalbi said: �He used to sit with the Prophet, Allah bless him and give him peace, and display things that pleased the Prophet while hiding in his heart the opposite of what he displayed. And so Allah, exalted is He, revealed (Lo! now they fold up their breasts that they may hide (their thoughts)) their thoughts of enmity to Muhammad, Allah bless him and give him peace�.
