فلما أغرقهم الله ونجى نوحا ومن معه { وَقِيلَ يَا أَرْضُ ابْلَعِي مَاءَكِ } الذي خرج منك، والذي نزل إليك، أي: ابلعي الماء الذي على وجهك { وَيَا سَمَاءُ أَقْلِعِي } فامتثلتا لأمر الله، فابتلعت الأرض ماءها, وأقلعت السماء، فنضب الماء من الأرض، { وَقُضِيَ الْأَمْرُ } بهلاك المكذبين ونجاة المؤمنين. { وَاسْتَوَتْ } السفينة { عَلَى الْجُودِيِّ } أي: أرست على ذلك الجبل المعروف في أرض الموصل. { وَقِيلَ بُعْدًا لِلْقَوْمِ الظَّالِمِينَ } أي: أتبعوا بعد هلاكهم لعنة وبعدا, وسحقا لا يزال معهم.

يخبر تعالى أنه لما أغرق أهل الأرض كلهم إلا أصحاب السفينة أمر الأرض أن تبلع ماءها الذي نبع منها واجتمع عليها وأمر السماء أن تقلع عن المطر "وغيض الماء" أي شرع في النقص "وقضي الأمر" أي فرغ من أهل الأرض قاطبة ممن كفر بالله لم يبق منهم ديار "واستوت" السفينة بمن فيها "على الجودي" قال مجاهد وهو جبل بالجزيرة تشامخت الجبال يومئذ من الغرق وتطاولت وتواضع هو لله عز وجل فلم يغرق وأرست عليه سفينة نوح عليه السلام وقال قتادة استوت عليه شهرا حتى نزلوا منها; قال قتادة: قد أبقى الله سفينة نوح عليه السلام على الجودي من أرض الجزيرة عبرة وآية حتى رآها أوائل هذه الأمة وكم من سفينة قد كانت بعدها فهلكت وصارت رمادا. وقال الضحاك: الجودي جبل بالموصل وقال بعضهم هو الطور وقال ابن أبي حاتم: حدثنا أبي حدثنا عمرو بن رافع حدثنا محمد بن عبيد عن توبة بن سالم قال رأيت زر بن حبيش يصلي في الزاوية حين يدخل من أبواب كندة على يمينك فسألته إنك لكثير الصلاة ههنا يوم الجمعة قال بلغني أن سفينة نوح أرست من ههنا. وقال علباء بن أحمر عن عكرمة عن ابن عباس قال: كان مع نوح في السفينة ثمانون رجلا معهم أهلوهم وأنهم كانوا فيها مائة وخمسين يوما وإن الله وجه السفينة إلى مكة فطافت بالبيت أربعين يوما ثم وجهها الله إلى الجودي فاستقرت عليه فبعث نوح الغراب ليأتيه بخبر الأرض فذهب فوقع على الجيف فأبطأ عليه فبعث الحمامة فأتته بورق الزيتون فلطخت رجليها بالطين فعرف نوح عليه السلام أن الماء قد نضب فهبط إلى أسفل الجودي فابتنى قرية وسماها ثمانين فأصبحوا ذات يوم وقد تبلبلت ألسنتهم على ثمانين لغة إحداها اللسان العربي فكان بعضهم لا يفقه كلام بعض فكان نوح عليه السلام يعبر عنهم. وقال كعب الأحبار: إن السفينة طافت ما بين المشرق والمغرب قبل أن تستقر على الجودي وقال قتادة وغيره ركبوا في عاشر شهر رجب فساروا مائه وخمسين يوما واستقرت بهم على الجودي شهرا وكان خروجهم من السفينة في عاشوراء من المحرم وقد ورد نحو هذا في حديث مرفوع رواه ابن جرير وأنهم صاموا يومهم ذلك والله أعلم. وقال الإمام أحمد حدثنا أبو جعفر حدثنا عبدالصمد بن حبيب الأزدي عن أبيه حبيب بن عبدالله عن شبل عن أبي هريرة قال: مر النبي صلي الله عليه وسلم بأناس من اليهود وقد صاموا يوم عاشوراء فقال "ما هذا الصوم ؟" قالوا هذا اليوم الذي نجى الله فيه موسى وبني إسرائيل من الغرق وغرق فيه فرعون وهذا يوم استوت فيه السفينة على الجودي فصام نوح وموسى عليهما السلام شكرا لله عز وجل: فقال النبي صلي الله عليه وسلم "أنا أحق بموسى وأحق بصوم هذا اليوم". فصام وقال لأصحابه "من كان أصبح منكم صائما فليتم صومه ومن كان أصاب من غذاء أهله فليتم بقية يومه" وهذا حديث غريب من هذا الوجه ولبعضه شاهد في الصحيح وقوله "وقيل بعدا للقوم الظالمين" أي هلاكا وخسارا لهم وبعدا من رحمة الله فإنهم قد هلكوا عن آخرهم فلم يبق لهم بقية وقد روى الإمام أبو جعفر بن جرير والحبر أبو محمد بن أبي حاتم في تفسيريهما من حديث يعقوب بن موسى الزمعي عن قائد مولى عبيدالله بن أبي رافع بن إبراهيم بن عبدالرحمن بن أبي ربيعة أخبره أن عائشة زوج النبي صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم أخبرته أن النبي صلي الله عليه وسلم قال "لو رحم الله من قوم نوح أحدا لرحم أم الصبي" قال رسول الله صلي الله عليه وسلم "كان نوح عليه السلام مكث في قومه ألف سنة إلا خمسين عاما يعني وغرس مائة سنة الشجر فعظمت وذهبت كل مذهب ثم قطعها ثم جعلها سفينة ويمرون عليه ويسخرون منه ويقولون تعمل سفينة في البر فكيف تجري ؟ قال سوف تعلمون فلما فرغ ونبع الماء وصار في السكك خشيت أم الصبي عليه وكانت تحبه حبا شديدا فخرجت إلى الجبل حتى بلغت ثلثه فلما بلغها الماء ارتفعت حتى بلغت ثلثيه فلما بلغها الماء خرجت به حتى استوت على الجبل فلما بلغ الماء رقبتها رفعته بيديها فغرقا فلو رحم الله منهم أحدا لرحم أم الصبي". وهذا حديث غريب من هذا الوجه وقد روى عن كعب الأحبار ومجاهد بن جبير قصة هذا الصبي وأمه بنحو من هذا.

The End of the Flood

Allah, the Exalted, informs that when the people of the earth were all drowned, except for the people on the ship, He commanded the earth to swallow its water, which had sprang from it and gathered upon it. Then He commanded the sky to cease raining.

وَغِيضَ الْمَآءُ

(And the water was made to subside) This means that it (the water) began to decrease.

وَقُضِىَ الاٌّمْرُ

(and the decree was fulfilled.) This means that all of those who disbelieved in Allah were removed from the people of the earth. Not a single one of them remained upon the earth.

وَاسْتَوَتْ

(And it (the ship) rested) This is referring to the ship and those who were in it.

عَلَى الْجُودِىِّ

(on (Mount) Judi.) Mujahid said, "Judi is a mountain in Al-Jazirah (Northwest Mesopotamia) where the mountains sought to tower above each other on the day of the drowning. On that day of destruction, all the mountains sought to be higher (to avoid being overcome by the water). However, this mountain (Judi) humbled itself for Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, and therefore it was not drowned. This is why Nuh's ship anchored upon it." Qatadah said, "The ship rested upon it (Mount Judi) for a month before they (the people) came down from it. " Qatadah also said, "Allah made Nuh's ship remain on Mount Judi in the land of Al-Jazirah, as a lesson and a sign." Even the early generations of this Ummah saw it. How many ships are there that have come after it and have been destroyed and became dust

وَقِيلَ بُعْدًا لِّلْقَوْمِ الظَّـلِمِينَ

(and it was said: "Away with the people who are wrongdoing!") means destruction and loss for them. The term "away with" here implies being far away from the mercy of Allah. For verily, they were destroyed to the last of them, and none of them survived.

And it was said ‘O earth swallow your waters that have sprung forth from you — and it reabsorbed it all except for what came down from the sky and formed rivers and seas — and O heaven abate!’ withhold the rain and it did. And the waters subsided decreased. And the affair was accomplished the matter of the destruction of Noah’s people was complete and it settled and the ship came to rest upon al-Jūdī a mountain in Mespotamia al-jazīra near Mosul; and it was said ‘Away with — perish — the evildoing the disbelieving folk!’

At the end of the fourth verse (44), it was said that the heaven and the earth obeyed the orders and the matter of the flood was all over. The Ark of Sayyidna Nuh (علیہ السلام) came to rest on the Mount Judiyy and it was declared that the unjust people have been cast far ` away from the mercy of Allah' - (which is what curse is).

Mount Judiyy still stands there by that name. Geographically, it is located on the border of Armenia near Ibn ` Umar Island north of Mousil in ` Iraq, the real home of Sayyidna Nuh (علیہ السلام) . This is a mountain range, part of which is called Judiyy. Another part of it is known as Ararat. In the present Torah, the place where the Ark came to rest has been identified as Mount Ararat. As obvious, there is not much of a contradiction in these two reports. But, well-known old historical accounts also say that the ark of Sayyidna Nuh (علیہ السلام) had come to rest on Mount Judiyy.

These accounts also mention that pieces of this ark are still there at many places in ` Iraq. These are kept and used as a relic.

According to Tafsir at-Tabari and al-Baghawi, Sayyidna Nuh (علیہ السلام) had embarked the Ark on the tenth of the month of Rajab. For six months, this ark sailed on the waters of the flood. When it reached the spot where Baytullah was, it made seven circuits. Allah Ta` ala had raised His House higher from being submerged. Then, on the tenth of Muharram, the day of ` Ashura', the flood subsided and the ark came to rest at the Mount of Judiyy. Sayyidna Nuh (علیہ السلام) observed a thanks-giving fast on that day and asked everyone on the ark to do the same. Some reports say that even animals that had shared the ark fasted on that day. (Mazhari and Qurtubi)

The importance of the day of ` Ashura', that is, the tenth of Muharram, has been recognized in all religious codes of the blessed prophets. In early Islam - before the fasts of Ramadan became obligatory - fasting on the day of ` Ashura' was fard. It is no more fard after the revelation of the obligatory status of fasting in Ramadan, but it continues to be a practice of prophets, and a source of reward forever.
